Best bargain and close to home- lovely saki glasses and dishes. It is quaint and authentic. My husband loves their noodles and I load up on the sushi and sashimi. The best sushi.... I start out with the hand rolled creamy scallops MMMM. Next, the yellow tail sahsimi. Eel sushi. Then the Shrimp tempura Donburi. The Service is genuine. We always get a real japanese welcome and a thank you upon leaving. We always sit at the counter while the Sushi master prepares it for you fresh. and the fish tastes real fresh.and artfully prepared. a visual treat. I used to go to the sea, dive down, catch it and eat it on the boat myself! He has everything on the menu. In between orders, he's always keeping his space clean. and getting things organized in neat little containers. Small cute Japanese restaurant that has really good tempura. Batter is very light and melts in your mouth (not the thick and gooey batter that you have to bite thru before you even touch a shrimp). Shrimp curry was ok but if it had more vegetables it'd be better but for the cost ($8.75), it works. Their rice is really beautiful, a nice grain that's cooked well. I would give the food 3 stars (good/average) but I bumped the overall to 4 because the service was so quick and nice. Had the Sambi Ramen and it was tasty. It didn't change my life (see: Daikokuya in Los Angeles) but like I said, the service was friendly and very fast. The noodles are good, the meat is okay, the broth could be a little more savory, but those are what would move it from tasty to super good. The ramen comes with 3 gyoza and rice, so for the price, it's a good little deal. I'll like go back when in the need for a quick ramen fix. read more

A lot of decent food, with nothing that I'd call absolutely stellar. - Gyoza are nice and crispy, though they could use a bit more flavor in the filling. - Various donburi are decent but nothing better than you'd expect for any given $6 donburi - Nigiri is pretty good, especially the salmon which is nice and buttery, though the rice is a bit too much on the sweet side for me; it overpowers the fish - The wheat soba is good, what you'd expect and nothing more; I'd order again. - We had some problems with the mochi ice cream. Ordered a few, some of which were great and some of which were frozen solid, giving the mochi itself a pretty terrible taste. Green tea ice cream was fine. Have to agree with Brian, the sushi is just ok. Nothing special but nothing terrible. It is a step up from the sushi-go-rounds and cheap sushi joints. But none of the rolls are terribly outstanding and the fish is ok nothing to really right home about. The other Japanese food is quite good and the lunch specials are a seriously good deal. I had a bit of trepidation because of the negative reviews, but we gave the place a try. First of all, it is CUTE. I don't know about all the reviewers calling the place drab. There are little surprises everywhere, like an intricate case of origami. Service was friendly and attentive. We ordered way too much food. My husband had the Japanese sashimi special and a bowl of ramen; I had the mini salad and tempura. We shared a variety of sushi, including crab salad, creamy scallop, geoduck nigiri and tamago. The food came quite quickly, even though they were very busy- every table was full. Everything was fresh. The tempura was crisp and the dipping sauce tasty. The ginger dressing on my salad was very good and also had lots of garlic. The seafood was excellent although, like some other reviewers, I wasn't fond of the crab salad. My husband and I ate dinner here tonight. It was so-so. When we first walked in I was surprised by how cluttered it was. Dirty dishes were piled high on a table by the front door and on the sushi bar. I had sushi and a salad. The sushi was ok, but had a funky smokey flavor to the seaweed. Neither of us cared for the smokey flavor. It was unlike any we've tasted before. I did like that they were generous with avocado in the rolls. The salad was horrible...literally just iceberg lettuce and cucumber slices. The dressing had no flavor and was very oily. I usually like a light rice vinegar dressing, but there was just no flavor to this at all. My husband had a rice bowl with some sort of egg and onion dish on top. It wasn't visually appealing, but he thought it tasted great, especially for $6. The miso may have been the best I've ever had. Very flavorful. The staff was super friendly. read more

Perhaps just as important is how cost for dishes cover just as broad a range-- affordable lunches or more indulgent diners are easy to arrange. This was the worst sushi I've had on the West Coast. I felt queezy during and after eating it. The crab salad they use in the middle of their rolls should not be consumed. It tastes and smells awful. The lack of reviews tells me this place isn't on folks' sushi radar screen. It should be. While the food on their menu is solid (agedashi tofu and chicken karaage in particular), their sushi is really quite good - nice fish to rice ratio with the rice perfectly seasoned. As you should with any sushi establishment, ask the chef what he recommends in terms of fresh fish of the day. You won't be disappointed. Also, they recently started offering authentic Japanese style crepes, similar to the kind you get in carts in Harajuku. I've found this to be the best Sushi on the west side of the Portland metro area. I lived in Japan for four years and had a difficult time finding what I thought would be an "authentic" Japanese dining experience, until I discovered Sambi. The "master" can be a little unfriendly and stubborn at times, but that is somewhat typical, in my experience (those of you who've lived in Japan will know what I mean ;)), but seems very professional, in a way that strives to create the best dishes possible. This place has no omotenashi. The owners have given up entirely and are making money on the worst quality food possible. The ramen was awful, and even calling it ramen is disrespectful. The pork was rubbery (real rubber might actually have been better), the broth was salty water with no complexity or richness and the egg was overcooked and hard. I couldn't make it through even three bites. To top it off, they charged over $9 a bowl. Very sad. If they tried to serve this in Japan they would be out of business in 1 day.
