I recently visited the Portland area. We took a day trip to a quaint town near the coast at Cannon Beach which was lovely. On our way back to Portland we stopped at Sambi's and it was a truly Japanese owned business. I ordered the bento with grilled mackerel. It came with, of course, grilled, not fried, mackerel, agedashi tofu, shrimp balls, shumai, eggplant, tamagoyaki (which was slightly sweet and fluffy), fresh cucumber rolls, salad and rice. It was truly wonderful and my soul was very happy. I felt that everything was made with love and care! My family ordered various other dishes which they all seemed very happy with. I wished there were more high quality and authentic Japanese restaurants near my home in Los Angeles. There are too many faux restaurants that use too much sugar, chili sauce, etc., disappointing. This place has a great dish of Katsu Curry so it automatically gets five stars from me! The staff are friendly, pleasant, and attentive enough to make you feel cared for and not annoyed. The wait time was very little, and the restaurant filled with a diverse range of people and families as we ate, letting me know it's a well-liked spot. The sushi chef prepared a beautiful arrangement for a chirashi-don. The genmai-cha was a perfect tea to pair with all the flavorful food. Oooohh...service was awesome, but food ($17 bento with little chicken) and $10 teriyaki chicken tasted all Japanese Fast food'ish. I'm here today with my mother to spend time together. Store is clean and inviting with shamisen music playing in the background. No matter when we stop by, we have our friends drop by unexpectedly as it is popular spot for Japanese community. I ordered lunch special that came with 5 pc deep fried shrimp and six cucumber rolls, bowl of rice, pickled cucumber, shiitake, deep fried tofu and poached egg simmer in soy sauce and sugar. I like how it changes a little depending on seasonal item, and I finished half and I became very full. Whenever I'm here I feel like I'm in Japan and feel as though I'm back in my home country. I bring my American friends here where udon, ramen, and buckwheat noodle is popular. We have been eating here for many years and it has always been outstanding tradition Japanese food and Sushi. Tonight the food was great but the Sushi was really disappointing. Giant slabs of rice with even bigger fillets of fish of medium quality that was lukewarm. I come to Sambi for traditional Japanese food with the traditional rice to fish ratio of classic sushi not American supersized stuff of low quality. What happened to my favorite place??? We moved to the west side and this is our new go-to Japanese restaurant. It has the home cooked feeling we like. So if you're looking for fancy or fusion Japanese food, look elsewhere. My friends and I stopped by here for a late lunch. The restaurant itself is pretty small, so prepared to wait if things are busy. We were seated after about a 15 minute wait (we arrived at around 1:30 pm) which actually was shorter than I was expecting. Overall, the service was extremely slow. Combined with the average-tasting food, my experience was a solid 3 stars. I ordered the lunch bento with the salted salmon and shared orders of the smoked salmon roll and spider roll with my friends. In my opinion, the salmon was much too dry to be enjoyed properly. My friend ordered a similar bento but with salted mackerel instead, which I thought tasted a lot better and not as dry. The smoked salmon roll was pretty average as well...not sure why I ordered it to begin with since I didn't think smoked salmon worked well in a sushi roll. The bento set did come with a lot of side dishes such as pickled radishes, seaweed salad, and miso soup which was nice. The average food and extremely slow service at Sambi left a lot to be desired. Sub par sushi at best, some of the conveyor belt places are better. The Miso was decent, average. The sushi roll menu is standard sushi menu. The wasabi was questionable, did that thing where it is lumpy and would not be stirred into a nice smooth paste with soy sauce. Also lacked any kick. Done this before, not my first rodeo, I know what I am doing. The pickled ginger was fine. The rolls were not well made, easily fell apart. The rice was crispy and not tasty on it's on like the best sushi. The fish itself was good, average, but not enough to overcome the generally lack luster flavors. Some of the rolls seemed to not match the menu description. Our server also told us the rolls were the wrong thing, which made no sense. We called her on it, and she had to go check her notes or something. The lemonade I had was good. Overall, it isn't terrible sushi, it just is below par for sushi around the area. This is an impressively cute, cozy place given it is tucked into a strip mall. I got a pork katsu bento box at dinner, which was $18 and a good amount of food. It starts with a pretty standard miso soup. The katsu was hot and crisp, fried to order and not greasy. Their rice is good with a smooth mouthfeel. The California roll is my main reason for taking off a star, as it was kind of messy in presentation and needed more cucumber, it was just too soft overall. I was happy the bento came with agedashi tofu, which was tasty and fresh. You also get 3 meatballs, which I thought was a bit odd, but they were fine. There are 2 small dumplings that I think had fish inside them? Not bad, but nothing special. The bento also comes with a special. The day I went, we got a bean sprout salad, which was a nice touch of freshness with the fried food, and a cold omelet, which was delicious. The service is polite and attentive, and I really liked the origami chopstick covers. They have a good selection of non-sushi, non-ramen items that I'm excited to try next time! read more

Sambi is my Japanese go-to: all of the authenticity and none of the commercial flash. The first time I ate at Sambi was after I'd come back to Portland from living in Japan, and I could have wept for being so happy to find Japanese food that was clean, simple and pure. Almost every time I visit (which is quite often), there are other Japanese customers as well - a great sign that the place is genuine. The food, menu and environment aren't fancy or elaborate. They're not selling you an exotic setting. Sure, they've got Japanese decorations up and about, but it's a small, family-run Japanese restaurant; there'd be something wrong if they *didn't*. They simply let their meals speak for themselves: good old-fashioned normal, traditional, everyday food. Delicious curry (I would recommend the chicken katsu curry), several types of ramen (unfortunately, none spicy; ramen was the one food item I could actually get spicy in Japan), a variety of donburi (rice bowls), a wide selection of appetizers (their agedashi tofu is a delicious meal on its own!), several wonderful lunch/dinner combo boxes, the usual udon and soba options, and all sorts of sushi that is on the expensive side (which is to be expected for any Japanese sit-down restaurant rather than a kaitenzushi), but decent portions and solid flavour. Their takoyaki makes me feel like I'm in Osaka again, but be careful - it comes out HOT! The speed can be hit or miss (again: family-run). If you go there during a lunch rush, yeah, it will take some time for the food to come out to you. It's never unreasonable, though, and they frequently check on you to refill water or tea. If they are busy, all it takes is eye contact and they come right over. The staff have always been very kind and happy to see me, and they are very genuine in their conversation. I love to come here with new friends and just relax, chatting and eating, never ignored but never bothered and never, ever rushed. I'm probably more versed in Japanese food and ramen than 99% of yelp reviewers as I have eaten at hundreds of ramen places in Japan and abroad, as well as having covered most of what's considered top10 places in Tokyo. Sambi ramen that I had here is not Ramen. It's Bullsh!t. It consisted of a bowl of "Ramen" in metal pot, instead of in a ceramic bowl, as if it was some sort of Nabeyaki Udon. It also came with a bowl of rice and 3 pieces of "gyoza", which was a pre-frozen store bought junk. There are some frozen gyozas by companies like Ajinomoto that are halfway edible, but this particular "gyoza" was the deep fried chinese kind that you can buy for rock bottom price in bulk and tasted just as horrid as it appeared. So this "Ramen".... my gosh where should I begin. It consisted of a "broth" that most likely was a diluted dashi concentrate with over cooked dried noodle. This "thing" was beyond bad as any self respecting Japanese person would not dare call it "Ramen". To add to the insult there was this dried, flaovorless "chasu" to make things more miserable. Let's just say that an instant ramen with raw noodle that my 11 year-old made for lunch today tasted 10 times better and it cost me $1.59 at Uwajimaya. My experience with this "ramen" was so bad that it surpassed anger and it made me sad. Sad that the owners have to resort to this crap and charge money. Sad that people on yelp don't see how bad it is. This is a lesson in how to make the most profit with the least amount of effort catering to people who don't know any better. It is true that there is this "ramen boom" in cities like NYC, LA and Las Vegas where many authentic Ramen-ya's are popping up. It is understandable why some Americans don't understand what the big deal with ramen is....because they are subjected to bullsh!t like this; sad indeed. It reminds me of eating "sushi" at 95% of sushi places in the US where Chinese and Korean "sushi chefs" absolutely butcher the sushi culture. I'm saddened by dearth of authentic Japanese food in Portland having moved form Nevada and Cali. Come on Portland, you can do better. read more

When I am feeling like I want a good, homey Japanese meal and I don't want to drive a million miles or spend a lot of money, I come to Sambi. The combo specials are a great deal - most come with miso soup and sushi along with an entree. Being in a strip mall, the ambience is actually OK (I like that they put washi paper over the fluorescent lights) and they use genmai tea instead of plain green tea which makes a huge difference to me. The sushi is basic, but tasty and they will make accommodations if you ask (My husband prefers sesame seeds rather than fish eggs on his California Rolls). The entrees here are good and even the combo/lunch portions are good. Their tempura is good with a light and fresh batter, but sometimes, they leave a little too much on it before putting it in the fryer so the coating is too thick sometimes. I have had almost everything on their menu and have always been satisfied. I love their salmon shioyaki with grated daikon - it reminds me of my mom's cooking. I love sushi. I've never really gotten into the ramen craze. I LOVE SAMBI. So unassuming, you can drive by it every day and not really notice it there. It's small, it's no-frills, but it's good sushi. This is one of the few places now that has an actual Japanese man making the sushi behind the counter. It feels a lot more authentic than the popular conveyor belt places. This is the place I go when I want quality over quantity. I think the prices are fair for the quality of the sushi, their miso is great, and the service I've had is always very friendly. read more
