Recently Mrs Plate and I found ourselves in the Barossa Valley for a weekend and having heard so much about Salters Restaurant at Saltram Winery, we decided the right thing to do was to check it out and see what all the fuss is about.
It was a Friday night, so imagining it would be busy we rang and made a booking, relieved that we were able to get in.
When we arrived, we were shocked to see how empty the place was, just 5 tables being occupied. We just hoped it wasn't a reflection of the food.
Our waiter was very friendly and showed us to our table, which was overlooking the pristine gardens of Saltram, including the Pepper tree that the iconic Pepperjack Shiraz is named after.
We ordered the Salters crusty bread with olive oil and dukkah for a shared starter and were impressed, the oil was fruity, the bread crunchy and the dukkah nicely spiced.
For our mains we couldn't go past trying a wood oven pizza (I'm a sucker for a good wood oven pizza) and we went with the pulled lamb shoulder with rosemary and olives, though we did ask to swap the goats cheese for the vintage cheddar as I just don't get why goats cheese is so popular, it's so pungent I find it hard to taste anything else.
We also ordered the 450g grass fed rib eye on the bone, which is served with duck fat potatoes and a mushroom sauce.
The meals were out quite quickly and they disappeared even faster. The pizza was perfect, crunchy base, generous toppings and the the flavours were perfectly matched. As for the steak, it left me near on speechless. It was so big and thick, yet still so tender and had a nice rich flavour. The mushroom sauce was fantastic, with chunky local mushrooms and even the side salad was tasty. I've had a lot of steaks in my time and this was definitely one of the better ones.
Despite feeling quite full, we decided to tackle dessert, choosing a salted caramel pyramid and a home made Aero with a liquid shiraz centre. Just when we thought the night couldn't possibly get any better from a food sense, it did once we tasted the desserts. They were absolutely outstanding, so much so that we ordered a few more Aeros to takeaway and share with our family.
It was a fantastic night, the wait staff were friendly and knowledgable, the prices are reasonable and the food is outstanding. Being a winery, it's not hard to find a decent tipple either. We were quite sad to hear that this was one of the last Friday's night they'll be open for as they just can't seem to attract diners, but they will still be open for lunch on the weekend and it's a trip well worth taking. read more
