I just so want to love this place, it breaks my heart. The food is outstanding (wings, fries, ribs, hush puppies). The service is uneven and the bar is dirty. We arrived on Friday at 4:30. No one at the bar, but several used glasses, a fork, crumbs and handheld pay computer near where we sat. Wait staff friendly and not too busy, moved the glasses, eventually the computer but the fork, crumbs remained-no wipe down in the 2 hours we were there. They were not particularly busy during a Friday happy hour. Kind of sad.

We came in just after the dinner rush. Seated immediately. Love the decor. And the subtle sound baffling. Our server checked on us at the perfect intervals. The wings were perfect. Moist, but with a crisp skin. Dry rub seasoning wasn't too strong or too meh. Right in the middle. The ribs were super tender. The Mac? Just as good as I'd heard. Each bite got more addictive. My partner said he wished it was just a bit creamier. He also got a similar plate to mine, but had brisket in place of the wings. He said the brisket wasn't bad, just a little dry. The popovers were meh. We brought them home, to maybe toast up and dip in soup. For cocktails, he had a manhattan and I had the spiced pear sangria. Love! Wish it hadn't been raining, because they've got a great patio.

Stellar service and great food at Salt + Smoke. Nice open seating area so you don't feel like you're on top of other tables. We really enjoyed our food, especially the White Cheddar Cracker Mac. The crackers give the Mac-n-cheese a nice texture. The creamed corn was also a wonderful side, but the beef fat fries, which I got loaded were probably the star of the show. Worth the upcharge! I got the wing plate and my buffalo wings were more of what I would call a sweet chili sauce, but I'm not complaining they were delicious and generously sauced. They were a tad spicy, but not so much that you couldn't eat them. They have GIANT eggy bacon and cheddar popovers that come with the plates. They also have the Lucky brand sodas, which I enjoy. Once again, our server was great and chatted with us, he was very friendly and answered my questions about the menu, unfortunately I didn't get his name. It's also very close to the Magic House, so you can stop by after a day of playing with your kiddos!

We were excited to come for the grand opening, and love that it is walking distance from our house! The interior is nicely decorated with TVs and some music on in the background. Lots of seating inside and out, looking forward to enjoying the patio when it warms up more. We tried a couple of appetizers, including the deviled eggs, fried pickles and hush puppies. All were good, but the hush puppies were our favorite! We tried the walnut old fashioned and the spiced pear sangria, the sangria was out favorite. We sat at the bar and our server (Kelly) was super friendly and helpful. She explained the draft cocktails and helped answer questions to narrow our drink choices. Looking forward to coming again for dinner!

This is Salt + Smoke's newest location, in Downtown Kirkwood. I tried their South County location months ago, and found it disappointing. We tried again today and stopped in for lunch. Positives first: this is a bright and airy location. It's decorated well, it's spacious and it is clean. The waitress we had, Sierra, was friendly and gave us free refills. Sadly, the host and other people we dealt with were not friendly or personable, so it seems the staff is hit or miss. The food was good, but not spectacular. My Mom got the Pulled Chicken Sandwich, and we both agreed that it was missing something. The Pimento Cheese and Corn Relish that came with it lacked flavor. I got the BLT, and it tasted like something I could have made at home for $5. The Beef Fat Fries were delicious though. Once again, underwhelmed but not fully against Salt + Smoke. I just don't see the appeal, maybe it's just me.

Come hungry! This place is so good, and the Kirkwood location is spacious inside. The outside was busy and the fire pit is a cute touch. You can't miss with the meat here. We both got the bestie combos with ribs and another meat, and all were awesome. Plus the Mac & cheese is probably some of the best I've had - super buttery and creamy. The service was also great. The staff were friendly and they refilled our drinks quickly. The food also comes out quickly. I'll be back!

Best Brisket sandwich I've ever had I strongly recommend to come here hungry because you're gonna get full really fast, it's a bit greasy, but that's what it is

I ordered the wings along with two side dishes, while my wife went with the spinach salad. Everything was very good, but I have to say the wings were top-notch. I really like the way the Sawmill prepares their wings--they have great flavor and are cooked just the way I like them. Our server, Jen, did a fantastic job taking care of our table. She was friendly, attentive, and made sure everyone had what they needed throughout the meal. Overall, we had another enjoyable visit to the Sawmill. Good food, excellent service, and a great place to enjoy dinner with family. We'll definitely be back.

5 stars for Sawmill BBQ Pub & Grill…read more We were originally trying to go to another barbecue restaurant but they ran out of brisket (WHAT!). Then I typed in some great barbecue restaurants on Yelp, and there appeared Sawmill BBQ Pub & Grill. It looks like just a regular bar with a music stage, but don't judge a book by its cover - the food is amazing. The portions are massive and the prices are reasonable, as are the drink prices. This is definitely more of a locals joint, but definitely worth stopping in for anyone if you want some St. Louis style BBQ. The brisket platter was the best - big portions, 2 sides and 2 pieces of garlic bread. The Jalepano Mac and cheese balls are awesome, so much flavor. The salmon platter was also very tasty and fresh. The live music is fun (but loud), and our waitress was nice. Overall, if you what BBQ and are in the area, this is definitely worth checking out.

GF has…read moremultiple serious food allergies, so finding places to eat that can easily accommodate is a pretty daunting task. We chose Salt + Smoke because it was nearby and usually BBQ is pretty doable for her. When we got to our table, we were both amazed that Salt + Smoke has a FULL allergen-friendly menu, not only gluten like many places will have nowadays. And our server was super patient and understanding of our needs as well. GF was able to easily select an entree and sides that she could safely enjoy, including the amazing deviled eggs. When our entrees came out, they were amazing also -- I highly recommend the brisket grilled cheese and the popovers. We both had plenty of leftovers for another meal too. Finally, the space inside the restaurant is really well done: very modern and open, but comfortable as well. We were in there the day that Dolly Parton passed away also and they were playing many of her hits over the sound system, which was a nice gesture.

Anyone that's ever won something in a team setting knows how hard it is for a team to mesh, play together, learn from one another, etc. It's not something that's done over night. It happens in the offseason, during two-a-days, and at 6pm during the evening rush on a Friday night. I'm not saying salt + smoke couldn't win a championship right now. They have the makings of a great team. They just haven't learned to play together. Ribs falling off the bone, that's your quarterback. You want a guy that will take a swing on a deep ball without barbecue sauce. Fatty brisket, that's your left tackle. You expect them to be the saving grace of a meal through consistency and flavor. But don't forget how important coaching is. You can't just have talented players. You need more salt and less smoke. It's called accountability. Now I say this all to say that my 1.5 year old toddler ate more food than she'd eaten the last week. As a dad, if she's happy, I'm happy. So, I'd recommend to any family. But as a yelp elitist, I'd wait a little longer for the team to become championship caliber.

Mr. J's BBQ is a BBQ stand on the NE corner of The Kirkwood Farmers Market…read more You can find him there on Thursday and Saturday. He serves great St. Louis backyard style BBQ prepared in a couple barrel pits. He prepares several meats every day he is there and has a number of sides. Today I tried his ribs, his brisket, his pulled chicken, and chicken thigh. All had good smoke flavor and were well cooked and seasoned. I really enjoyed the chicken thigh and the ribs. Don't get me wrong the other items were good, but I enjoyed those 2 the most. I'm not a fan of pulled chicken, I've noted that previously, but Mr. J's pulled chicken was right good. He puts a little of his se'lah gold sauce with it and some sautéed peppers and onions. That makes for good flavor. The reason for the 4 not 5 stars is minor. I had several slices of brisket on my plates and the first slice I picked up while nicely smokey and well seasoned was tough. However, every other slice was perfectly tender indicating a proper cook. I only tried his Se'lah Original Sauce. But let me tell you he has a wonderful quintessential St. Louis style BBQ sauce in that. Man is it good. I get to KFM often during the summer. I'll be back by for sure. Y'all enjoy!!
