Salt Shack on the Lake: A Review of Hits and Misses
The Salt Shack on the Lake in Clermont offers a beautiful lakeside setting, but the food experience can be a bit of a gamble. Here's a breakdown of my visits:
The Good:
Wahoo/Fish Special: This dish was a winner! The perfectly cooked fish with the rum sauce scored an impressive 8.6. However, points were deducted for slow service and a lack of alternative options when I requested a substitution. The minimal rum sauce also required a frustrating wait for a refill.
Burgers: The burgers are undeniably the stars of the show. Cooked to your liking, they're a reliable choice. Just be aware that the portion of fries on the side is on the small side, so you might want to consider adding another side dish.
Somewhat Good:
Steamed Shrimp (First Time): The first serving of steamed shrimp was a delight. The shrimp themselves were plump and cooked perfectly, earning a solid rating. Unfortunately, the cocktail sauce needs a serious revamp.
The Bad:
Steamed Shrimp (Second Time): Disappointment struck with my second order of steamed shrimp. The portion size was significantly smaller compared to my first visit. More concerning was the texture of the shrimp - rubbery and mushy, suggesting improper cooking. This, along with the lukewarm temperature, brought the rating down considerably.
Crab Cakes: This dish was a disaster, scoring a lowly 2/10. The crab cakes were overly salty, mushy, and poorly made, with a strong taste of processed stuffing. The meager sides of broccolini and burnt plantains added insult to injury.
Service: The service can be inconsistent. In some cases, it was slow, with waiters being unhelpful with substitutions and refills taking a long time.
Wait Times: Food can take a significant amount of time to arrive. My recent crab cake experience involved a wait of nearly 35 minutes.
Desserts: The desserts were underwhelming, lacking in size and excitement, scoring only a 3.
Coleslaw: While the coleslaw that comes with some dishes is unique, it lacked any real tang or flavor, and I would only give it about a 5-6. A little tweaking could make a big difference here.
Overall Impression:
The Salt Shack has the potential to be great, with delicious burgers and beautiful scenery. However, inconsistency in food quality, slow service, and uninspired desserts hold it back. The high price point for dishes like the crab cakes, coupled with long wait times and minimal side options, makes the experience even less appealing.
Recommendations for Improvement:
Revamp the cocktail sauce recipe. It currently detracts from the otherwise enjoyable shrimp. Consider a zestier option!
Completely upgrade and revamp the crab cakes. Fresh ingredients and proper preparation would make a world of difference.
Explore introducing new recipes that showcase fresh, seasonal ingredients. Perhaps a watermelon salsa or a remoulade with mango salsa could add a vibrant touch to some dishes.
Address the inconsistency in food quality, particularly with regard to seafood.
Hire more cooks to improve food delivery times.
Consider lowering prices if wait times continue to be excessive.
Offer more exciting and larger dessert options.
Expand side options to go beyond fries and plantains.
Rethink the coleslaw recipe to add some tang or punchier flavor profile.
Final Thoughts:
While the burgers are a draw, the current state of the Salt Shack makes it a gamble for a good seafood meal. For a truly satisfying experience, I'd be willing to travel further for a more consistent restaurant. read more
