We were very pleased with our recent dinner experience here. The food was good, so was the beer, so was our server (mostly), and so was the outdoor patio seating. We liked the Green State Lager, not too hoppy and very smooth to the taste. The French Onion soup arrived with an enormous chunk of cheese on top that was delightful and some chopped onions that were rather bland. Our entrees included the NY Strip, cooked rare as we asked, and Chicken Parmesan, quite a good conflation of tastes with the parmesan not overdone. Downside: our server was attentive but neglected to mention the cost of the steak ($50) before we ordered. Otherwise, as we mentioned, this was a welcome dinner. read more

This was my first time at Salt Bistro. The wait staff was very nice and we made a reservation in advance. Drinks were fabulous and the food was tasty. I'm excited that another good place has opened up locally and next to the distillery is perfect for pre-drinks then dinner! There were two things I would have changed. A ton of apps were out of stock when we were planning on ordering them. Second, the Shrimp Fra Diavlo is typically a red sauce with some spicy red pepper flakes. However, it was served with whole slices of jalapeños. It was wildly over spicy and not normally an ingredient served with this dish. This was also the case for two other dishes. However, this should not deter you from checking it out! The lamb bolognese was INCREDIBLE and I will return just for that. read more

Not sure why this place has gotten high ratings in the past. We were the first diners in the door on a Saturday night. (12/17/22) We were greeted and seated promptly. The young man waiting on us took our order for starters while we decided on mains. My wife had the Beet and Chèvre salad and I ordered the French Onion Soup. The salad was nice, if somewhat light on the chèvre, the citrus dressing could have used a bit more acid in the dressing. My soup was ok, but the onions were cut in wedges rather than sliced before being cooked (with barely a hint of caramelization that adds so much flavor.) This left me with some pieces of onion 3/4 to an 1" wide, and seems like a lazy way of doing things. Our mains arrived before my wife was finished with her salad, and, obviously, before our table was cleared from our first course. I racked this up to inexperience (I later found out that our server had just two weeks in the profession.) My wife had the 'Catch of the Day' Lobster Ravioli which she had requested to be prepared with white wine and garlic rather than the menu preparation with sherry cream sauce. The kitchen easily accommodated her request. While the pasta was cooked properly there was scant evidence of lobster in the filling. My Veal Saltimbocca was a terrible disappointment, I tried a couple of bites of the sauce and then searched in vain for the veal, there was none! After I sent the dish back the hostess came to the table and said that there had been a 'printer error.' The second plate I received had two large cutlets, but sadly they had not been pounded so they were quite tough. Also this time the chef had omitted the prosciutto, so the dish was very bland. Dessert was a forgettable chocolate cake that obviously came from a purveyor, had we known it wasn't prepared in house we would have skipped it. In recognition of the Saltimbocca failure we were comped half price on our total check. read more

We never review. We haven't had a bad meal in Vermont in the 3 years living here and traveling the state, but tonight we did. We must have gone on an off night or something. All these rave reviews and we got frozen food? We have been wanting to go there for awhile and regret it. A burger should be a restaurant's reflection. It would be where to shine above the rest. Everyone says "oh I had the best burger at _____". There are articles written on "Best Burgers". Obviously not at Salt. They had multiple burgers on the menu, so it shouldn't be an afterthought prepThis burger was obviously frozen because it was a perfectly shaped hockey puck with dimples. My husband's burger was broken in 3 pieces. The fries were limp and cold. The presentation was just the open burger with the fries. It was surreal to be in a place that had good reviews and substandard food. Although, I noticed the reviews are older. Perhaps, the restaurant needs to be revamped. That being said....this place was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. So bad I am writing to let others know. The food is priced and described like you're eating at a Michelin star restaurant and I'm 99% sure that the food was made with canned sauces and vegetables and was barely edible. One of our friends had a frozen meatball brought out to her and didn't eat it. The chef came out and then asked (basically demanded) to know why she didn't eat it so he could improve. Loved this place! Food was exceptional--I had the Portabella Caprese, which was simply delicious, and a lovely Chardonnay -- and the menu is extensive and reasonably priced. The service was perfect and the ambiance of the outdoor dining area completely relaxing. Words simply cannot describe how fantastic Salt Bistro was for our wedding elopement. The food was truly some of the best we've ever had, which is so rarely something one can say of a catered event. But every dish was out of this world. From the 16oz perfectly cooked steaks to the mac and cheese that was exactly the right amount of cheesy to the Marsala meatballs that everyone couldn't stop eating- really, everything was just amazing. And AJ went above and beyond, stepping up to cater for us when our wedding plans had to change true to Covid. He was kind, flexible, easy going, and a true pleasure to work with. Once again, second night in St. Johnsbury and at another restaurant that has little concept of service. Waiter delivered water and drinks but has not come back in the last 30 minutes to refill water or ask if we want another round. Appetizers and salads apparently are en route from Italy. Must have been booked on a flight that was cancelled. What has happened to the service industry especially here in the NEK of Vermont? Seems to be plenty of staff to handle the 12 tables of patrons.......Burger King or Pizza Hut would be my recommendation when looking to eat in this town. Had a very quiet dinner with family friends. The atmosphere was ok. We were the only table there at five o'clock. The waitstaff were very attentive. Had a starter Caesar Salad and as a main I had the lobster ravioli which was great. A little pricey over all, but decent. Hope they do okay- unfortunately the location has had a significantly rough time with being a business, it's like a revolving door for restaurants at this point. What a wonderful meal we had!! Had dinner on Tuesday night to celebrate our 22nd Wedding Anniversary. Made a reservation 2 weeks ahead. It was very easy to do online. Toasted crostini appetizers with fresh tomato, garlic, parm cheese and balsamic drizzle were excellent and fresh. Generous portion. For dinner, my husband and I both had the shrimp with pink rose sauce. Beautiful presentation and delicious. Glasses of pinot grigio wine to accompany our dinner. For dessert I had a cold slice of homemade chocolate cake with whipped cream on the side. My husband had a cold slice of homemade key lime pie. Too good!! Decaff coffee served in a French press, piping hot, with cream, ended our experience. Staff was friendly and very accommodating. Such a special experience. We visited Salt for the first time yesterday. We shared the eggplant parmesan stack - nicely done. It arrived in a small cast iron skillet with plenty of sauce and cheese as well as a nice crusty bread to dip in the sauce. The eggplant was perfectly cooked. The serving would have been fine as a small entree. I ordered the Cauliflower Orchiette - our server Matt assured us it was his favorite. It was excellent - nicely roasted cauliflower and cloves of garlic mixed with a slightly spicy sausage and cherry tomatoes. The serving was big enough for two so I took half home. My husband had the beef ribs - WOW! The rib rack was huge - smoked and basted with barbeque sauce to perfection - moist and lovely. Again, we brought half home. The atmosphere is very nice, with white table clothes, candles on the tables and interesting art on the walls. Our server was very welcoming and friendly. However, the inexpensive silverware seemed out of place and the bathrooms were tiny - I use a cane and need something that is handicap accessible - the bathroom I used was not even close. We sat in the bay window and noticed that, although the breeze from the open windows was pleasant, there were no screens and flies and bugs did get in. However, that being said, this was a very pleasant experience and we will return. read more

I admit I am a bit of a food snob. I know what I like and if it costs me vast sums of money, so be it. No.No.No. That is something I always wanted to say, yet it is not me. I love good drive-in as much as a 5-course sit-down banquet. When I ventured onto AJ, the owner/chef of the Salt Bistro, I had to do something I have NEVER done before, and that was to write a food review. For meeting this remarkable individual in St.Johnsbury, Vermont was a pleasure beyond anything expected. AJ was the caterer for my daughter's wedding. A 175 person reception in June was postponed several times and finally rescheduled for June, 2021. The kids still decided to have their ceremony yet it was attended by immediate family only. AJ was the caterer and I had no idea what to expect. The appetizers were wonderfully created and included tasty stuffed mushrooms; delectable bruschetta; and delicious marsala meatballs. They were served in a manner that AJ kept replenishing them without letting anything get soggy or cold. These were a wonderful prelude to the main course and here AJ performed exceedingly well. Folks had a choice among a New York Strip Steak, a half chicken ( or so it seemed ), and blackened salmon. They were all wonderfully prepared as I made it my business to taste them all. After all, as the father of the bride, I was paying for the meal so there had to be certain perks! While the salmon and chicken were memorable, it was the steak that brought actual cheers by those in attendance. Frankly, I didn't order the steak, as I thought my own preparation on the grill was about as good as it gets, especially since I started frequenting a meat market in Shelburne that has had the best quality meats I have tasted. Move over Shelburne Road. The 16 oz NY Strip that AJ prepared in a cast iron fry pan at a very high heat, with butter and herbs, was as delicious as anything I have ever eaten and I have enjoyed dining worldwide! This steak was as good as Peter Luger's, and better yet, it compared favorably to a steak house "The Prime" in the Diplomat Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida where something comparably would have cost $95.00. AJ's preparation was something I wanted to watch, and AJ acquiesced. As a result, I got to watch this chef up close and this guy could cook. Juggling the salmon, chicken, and several steaks on the gas burners were no problem for AJ. The steaks, in particular, were a vision of splendor. They were easily a 2 inch cut that were marbled beautifully. When AJ brought the steaks to the table, he knew which diner got what meat according to her preference. As 6 of the 10 diners eat steak, this was no small feat! Finally, AJ brought out the accompanying side dishes that included mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, risotto, and a tossed garden salad. Please understand these were all requests from my daughter, thus the carb overload. No matter as they were all positively delicious. We ate and ate, and upon completion, I asked AJ whether he had brought "doggie bags" for leftovers. I was half kidding, and I went to tell AJ there was no need, yet apparently he left the premises to find storage bags at 10:00pm on a Saturday night in St.Johnsbury. Need I say more? When AJ presented me with the bill, I thought he was joking. The value was extraordinary and I insisted on an extremely generous tip, as otherwise I would have felt guilty. Here's the bottom line: My family will travel almost 2 hours next week for dinner at the Salt Bistro. read more
