Friday night went to @98 Mill & had the worse meal ever. 4 of us & only 1 didn't have a meal full of pepper! My Piccata Chicken came with a black sauce & the carrots were covered in pepper. Had to send it back & the fabulous server let me know the manager took off 30%! Oh hell no! I demand 100% of my meal off since it wasn't edible! Although that was the final outcome I can assure you that I will never go there again because the chef never saw a pepper shaker he didn't like! I rarely write a bad review & have been here before but this was the worse, so don't bother!! Be sure to go elsewhere, too much money & too much pepper! read more

We were in St.J to visit the Fairbanks Museum and went here for a lunch. There were not many options in the area on a Sunday that had beer. This place was Awesome. The rusty interior was so interesting. I love converted industrial buildings. The calamari was so different and incredible. The server was very pleasant and friendly. About every six months I come back here hoping for a better experience. I truly want the very few restaurants in St J to make it. I think to myself, perhaps they've gotten new staff members who will be kind or they stopped serving the chicken picatta in a pool of grease/without linguine or ... literally anything different. Lo and behold: every time I come it's the same ole. ATP I give up. As a note: do not open on Boxing Day next year. I know the owners want the money (clearly), but none of your servers and bartenders wanted to be there. Ordered the stuffed mushrooms with four on a plate. The guest I was with, ordered the same thing and she had five on a plate. They definitely need to work on consistency. They definitely need more waitresses. We were all having a good time when we were told that last round at 7:45. It was a Thursday night. They definitely need a deep clean. Arrived in the area around 9 pm and was having trouble finding a restaurant that was open. This was the only local place that was open. Walked in, and the place had an industrial vibe to it. Immediately, the staff greeted and seated us. We were close to the kitchen closing and quickly made some decisions. Overall the food was fine. The patio is lovely to sit on and highly recommend it if they have space. It's shady in the evening. Our waitress was absolutely wonderful, so friendly and knew the menu so well. Drinks were great. We tried a cocktail and thought they were very impressive and well-made. Food did come out quick, so that was nice. It was pretty good. I tried the eggplant ricotta and the eggplant was very thick cut and chewy. Parts of it tasted amazing, not sure why only parts of it though . Honestly, I don't recommend that particular dish. What an amazing addition to the downtown St Johnsbury food scene! This cozy and friendly restored mill wows with a 360 degree copper bar, exposed brick and beams, and vintage newspaper art. The menu has plenty of options- from burger and fries to Italian specialties. Of important note is the great volume of gluten free options ( over 10 on the menus- and none of them a salad)- hard to find in most cities- extremely rare in northern Vermont. ABSOLUTE DISASTER! We will not be back. We had no trouble locating the establishment; however, parking is limited to the curb with plenty of trash around. I ordered the Eggplant Ricotta and the presentation looked okay. Once I dug in to it, the eggplant was thicker and as rubbery as the bottom of my boot. She ordered the Fettuccine Juliet. After trying it, she said that it was way over spiced. We both cut our dinner short after a few bytes. $50 or more wasted dollars later, we ended up trashing both meals. I travel frequently for work and visited 98 Mill last night after a long day working in the cold and my meal definitely hit the spot! I got in right before closing and sat at the bar, and had help from staff right away. My bartender was very friendly and helpful. I had butternut squash soup and the special, steak tips in alfredo sauce, both items were delicious! My steak was prepared perfectly, medium rare, and the sauce was very tasty. I liked the texture and flavor of Brussel sprouts that came with the steak. There was karaoke going on as well which I didn't expect but wasn't disappointed. I will be back! read more

With a new restaurant I always wait a few weeks before trying it. Which is the 98 they Saturday and had a fantastic dinner and Saturday table overlooking the river inside can be noisy but outside fantastic. The kitchen knows what it's doing spacing the ceiling so that the kitchen doesn't get overwhelmed. It's rare for the new restaurant usually takes more time to learn that food came out quickly and was hot. Would not only recommend it, but looking forward to going again soon. read more

The renovation is fantastic. Love the bar and grill vibe in this historic old mill combined with an awesome copper-top bar and big tvs. Service was top notch too. The food, however, was disappointing. Chicken piccatta made me think of a Swanson's frozen dinner with extra salt. Preformed chicken patty and a pile of boiled baby carrots. Look I love it up here and really go out of my way to support the local business, but this place was just not good. The service was terrific. The drinks good The food was just not good. You would think that a place that promotes itself as an Italian grill would have decent red sauce. The red sauce here was basically not eatable. I had heard they had great pork chops but I opted for the french dip...not a good move. The beef was extremely dry and bland and the dip was extremely salty. The worst french dip I have ever had. Food was awful. Spent $150 and it was frozen salmon over cooked; cold broccoli; and risotto out of the box is tastier. My husbands seafood platter was undercooked. The shrimp and scallops were still slightly translucent. Drinks were awesome so will return for drinks; but being the second try and food was worse than the first won't try eating here again. The food was just plain awful. I honestly think it was prepackaged frozen food heated in a microwave. When you first walk in the atmosphere is pleasant, but the seating is very uncomfortable. The service was fine. I won't come back and I do not recommend this restaurant. read more
