Once our dishes started arriving, however, we noticed they were definitely a cut above what you'd normally expect! We have been visiting this establishment for years! The food has been enjoyed by "ALL" of our out of state friends and relatives! Best Breakfast Ever! The chicken fried steak with sausage gravy is the most unbelievable delicious decadent I have eaten in the Northeast! Our granddaughters favorite the chocolate chip pancakes! A small restaurant on a state road in central Vermont that you might not think was much, but it's definitely worth your time. We sat by the windows overlooking the Moose River, and it was peaceful and relaxing. I had the pulled pork, and it was good and tender. My wife had a hamburger, but the patty was juicy. Not a bad thing, but when placed directly on the bun, the bread soaks up those juices making it too soggy to hold. Had the lettuce been on the bottom bun with the patty on top of that, it would have been a better experience. Instead, she ended up eating it with a knife and fork. The burger had a good flavor, though. Our server (unfortunately, her name has escaped me) was very good: patient, helpful, personable, and attentive. If I could rate it higher I would. Our truck broke down across the street 4 hours from home, we walked in to sit and figure out our plan. The staff here were incredibly friendly and hospitable. They told us to stay as long as we needed to figure out our ride and tow situation. We continued to order food and drinks over the course of more than 7 hours. Everything was fantastic! The route home from the middle of nowhere in New Hampshire took me through the middle of nowhere in Vermont. Passing Mooselook Diner made me realize I was getting hungry; and a quick look at the map showed no other restaurants on my route for miles. Mooselook looked kind of cute and rustic, and reviews mentioned the lovely views of the river below. Inside is less rustic, with what looks like new booth-style tables in a small dining area. The bar area has tables and a window wall that overlooks the wooded area and river below. Snow covered the ground and most of the river. Given its name is Mooselook, I was disappointed I didn't see one. :) The menu was pretty standard--burgers, wraps, pulled pork. Nothing really excited me except the bourbon burger with onions caramelized with Vermont maple syrup. Still a burger felt too heavy for the long drive ahead so I opted for the New England Clam Chowder. I've had plenty of chowda in my day as it's one of my favorites. This was a bit different. The broth was thinner than I'd come to expect and I braced myself for a disappointing first bite. Instead, the unique flavor surprised me; and as I continued to eat, I realized the chowder was loaded with more clam bits than I've ever had before. The chowders I've previously tasted were thick and creamy. Seems to me now that it may have been to mask the lack of substance. Because Mooselake's broth is thinner, they make up for it with lots of chunks of clams and potatoes. Instead of the hint of sweetness I expected, there was a bit of a kick to the chowder which I immediately noticed on the first bite. Different and AMAZING! I'd be remiss to not mention my young server. I want to say Justine...? This girl emitted such a happy, positive vibe. She seemed to love her job and her customers and is a true asset to the restaurant. She was so good, I left her a $4 tip on a $6 bill. (Yes, the bowl of soup was only $6, but burgers and club sandwiches were $12 and $10, respectively.) Before I left, I was asked to write my name and contact info for COVID tracing. That freaked me out a little. I rarely eat out right now. Is this normal or are they experiencing cases in their establishment? We had the corn chowder, French onion soup, meatloaf, and all you can eat fish fry. The soups were awful. The fish overlooked like leather. The homemade fries were like soggy and greasy burned nastiness. Meatloaf was eh and came with instant mash and canned green beans. All this for $30 . Yep. So be warned. They did have pickled fried tripe and maple cream pies on the menu But who cares they blew their chance. Not going back. Place was way dirty too. Fountain iced tea was nasty too. Mooselook Diner does not look like a typical diner. Although it doesn't have a diner atmosphere, it has home cooking, a nice view and great service. Brooke, our server was pleasant and cheerfully accommodated every special request that our family had. She definitely went above and beyond the call of duty. Nachos, burgers, fish, salad and pasta were all very good. The French Fries were amazing. The restaurant was immaculate, the outdoor seating area was closed because of the stormy weather. Glad we found Mooselook Diner, it was a pleasurable stop after a long day of driving in the pouring rain. Definitely a Northeast style menu, which I miss so much in Texas!!! For those of you not from the area, this is located literally right off of Rt 2 so it's very easy to find. Annnd, depending on the time of year you are visiting, there is a real-life moose weigh-in station around the corner that you can check out during moose season! So the New Moose Look is open! Beautiful inside & out & so clean. The food however was not the highlight. First it was prime rib night starting @4pm & by our 6:30 reservation none left! I'm okay with paying more when the portions equal the cost. Hubby got the fried clams all 10 of them, I got the raw steak tips, less raw the 2nd time around but still raw. Green beans were totally mushy! & just gross! Okay, the Fiddle Head beer was yummy as were the fries! They took my dinner off the bill & we still paid over $40! That's 4 bucks a clam! We have travelled Rt 2 from NJ to NH for 14 years. Have eaten here before and it was always good. First time since the renovation and WOW! The place is just beautiful inside and out. Staff was great and breakfast was excellent (I had their homemade corned beef hash and my husband had their Tots skillet with sausage gravy). Both excellent. We love a poached egg which is fun because they are often over cooked. Not here. They were perfection! All the best for much success to this spot. We will be back for sure! PS the coffee is great. Love this place! Can't afford to go out to eat often (their prices are low and portions are huge!) but when I do I go here. Their breakfast and dinners are great but my favorite meal to get here is the turkey club. Fresh turkey breast not that deli meat stuff. Amazing, can't wait to go again soon! Wife and I drove from Eden Vermont to Concord because of the good reviews. Food was Ok, I had the Captains platter, the whole belly clams were small and not much in the belly department, scallops were acceptable, overall just OK. My Wife had what was called sea scallops, small and not the type you get on the New England coast, doubt they were native more likely imported and previously frozen. The problem that I found out two days later was they changed my tip amount. on a $32.98 bill. I paid with credit card and added a $7.02 tip to bring the total to $40.00, later to find out they changed it to a $10.00 tip and charge was $42.98. If you choose to dine here pay with cash to avoid this criminal activity!!! read more

This place is nothing special to look at, and the 'truckers welcome' sign may dissuade some. That would be too bad, because this is a great local diner type restaurant. The prior reviewer was absolutely on target, and "diamond in the rough" was going to be my tag line, too. While the appearance may be rough, it is actually a welcoming atmosphere, that would be fine for families or women. They also cater to seniors, and have several choices for quieter appetites at reduced prices. Don't overlook their desserts, including maple cream pie.
