We were on an old fashioned & whiskey bar hunt and stumbled upon salt & whiskey inside the lobby of the hotel. Two of us first ordered a specialty old fashioned (I forget the name) and they ultimately both just tasted like bitters, which was disappointing. Luckily they had a happy hour and we then ordered their classic old fashioned's, which were way better. Did not try any of the food, but drinks and ambiance made this a 4 star experience! We decided to visit the beautiful and classic bar at Salt & Whiskey tonight to enjoy some drinks after being introduced to the hotel a couple of nights ago during a ghost tour. We were greeted by a friendly group of bar staff and sat down. Bailey took our order and made THE most delicious espresso martini I have ever had!! Located inside the Horton Grand Hotel, this fancy looking restaurant caught our attention. Sadly, it was all looks and not much to brag about in terms of food and service. My friend and I stopped by for lunch last Friday (during Comic-Con). The restaurant was relatively empty when we came for lunch. Our server handed us the menu, filled our water glasses, and just disappeared. About 20 minutes later, we had to hunt her down to place our order. Since it was Comic-Con week, the lunch menu was very limited. We ordered a Margherita Flatbread and Shrimp Tacos to share. The flatbread was EXTREMELY GREASY! This was interesting, as you wouldn't expect this type of pizza to be greasy because there were no pepperoni or bacon that would explain the grease. We concluded that the grease had to have come from the sauce or they heavily greased the bottom of the flatbread. It was awful. I typically gravitate towards the Margherita Flatbread because it's relatively healthy in comparison to other pizzas/flatbreads. Clearly, this was a far cry from "healthy." In addition to the grease, the flavor of the sauce was just bad. The shrimp tacos were ok. You can't really mess up this dish unless you overcooked the shrimp. The shrimp were grilled and were a tad bit greasy. Overall, we were very disappointed with our lunch. The only good thing was the server did not charge us for the sparking water. We both asked for lime and she said they ran out of lime; they only had one rotten piece(it was brown, not green). Interestingly, our tacos miraculously came with 2 pieces of lime and they weren't rotten! Here's a tip: If it's rotten, don't serve it! read more

Stopped in, and the first thing I said was who put salt on whiskey, and I got a laugh and then I spoke with Tyler, who was at the bar, very knowledgeable on several different levels of whiskey and different drinks. I would walk through the place up the stairs to my room. I really liked the vibe and old style music that played. The ambiance is what sells this place. The day I visited Salt & Whiskey fell short and I think it was just the day I decided to drop in. It was like dining with the dead. Over on the right side of the restaurant there were a party of 2 from the conference and just look exhausted and 2 more parties of 2 that looked like they just had a long day and were also exhausted sat after me. No lively conversation. Just quietness. The manager brought me my beer which was nice and then said so-so would be helping me. I ordered a bread and street tacos. My table had a spiderweb and spider on it - a live one. Added to the vibe. What irked me is that a couple close to me ordered fries about 10 minutes after my order and they received their order first. I finally flagged a server down after 25 minutes and asked if the bread could be brought out. The server then immediately brought my full order. My assigned server was very slow and gave off they were new and learning the ropes. My tacos had a 2cm sharp bone in it. I advised the server. I don't know how a bone that size makes it all the way to the table. For a party of 1 - from sitting to paying - it took just under an hour. Not the normal service in the area. As you can see with what I ordered, it was nothing elaborate. The other customers only ordered fries and drinks. To give a further expectation - my uber driver to the airport asked me if I had eaten at Salt & Whiskey and what were my thoughts. I said yes I had and while they were nice and think I stopped on a bad day, there are much better options in the area. He said nope, he was asking to see if they had gotten any better. I had the honor of eating their New York serloin steak and was simply blown away. Its delicate balance of tenderness, salt, and flavor brought a sensual sensation that opened a door to pleasures and tastes that I fear I will never experience ever again. Its thick one inch size and soft almost melted texture brought exttasy to every bite. Eating their steak was such an intense and pleasurable experience that I fear I can never eat another steak again as nothing would ever compare to the whole flash flood of endorphins that were released once my tongue touched that steaky beefy flesh. I may have to run away to a vegan convent after the shameful thought of ever finding a steak that good again. The steak now haunts my dreams and may have even dulled my senses as I will never understand pleasure like that so long as I ever live. That steak made me question the existence of god and evolution at the same time since no devine being nor force of nature could ever have crafted such a beautiful piece of meat like that again. Every bight made me convinced that the cow that was slaughtered must have been a virtuoso in happiness as well as being made of gold only allowing itself to be slaughtered but defiling itself for allowing such a worm like me to taste it. After my mind blowing experience I felt that I needed to get a self designed major in which I would discuss the theoretical reasonings to why this steak was so great and build my thesis committee members from three world renowned chefs only to prove and defend that this steak was the one true steak above all other steaks and devout the rest of my life to teaching introductory courses in community college about how amazing this steak is. Only the fates know of the delights I felt the night o ate this steak....and hopefully the tip we gave the waitress can only show a fraction of the awe I felt this night for the steak....all in all, it's pretty good for the price. read more

They brought us water and took our drink order and it took about 10 minutes to bring sodas to us after they noticed we haven't received our drinks. We ordered the burgers and fries. The burgers tasted good but we added the option of adding bacon to our burgers and got charged $4 thinking we would get more than 1 slice of bacon. I made reservations back in January for my husband's 50th birthday celebration. I was in charge of making this moment so special to him and our out of town & country friends. The trolley manager explained the name meaning came from the two imports-then it made sense. This restaurant is located inside the Horton Grand Hotel. Wow! The hotel and restaurant are a cool spot to check out. We ordered coffee which was very delicious. Overnight oats were topped with berries and came with condensed milk, brown sugar and honey. We only used the honey. We ordered the breakfast with three eggs, toast, 2 slices of perfectly cooked thick bacon, one sausage patty and potatoes. It came with a side of butter but the toast had the butter already caked on, which was disappointing. Why give so much butter if there isn't anything to butter up?
