Salt & Straw is definitely a fun stop if you're into trying new and unusual ice cream flavors. The shop has a cool vibe and the staff is really friendly and let you sample a bunch before deciding. Some of the flavors are honestly really good and creative, but a few feel a bit over the top or just not something you'd want in ice cream. It's more of an experience place than somewhere I'd go when I just want a simple scoop. It's also on the pricier side, but that's expected for the type of shop it is. Overall, I'd say it's worth trying at least once, especially if you like adventurous desserts...but it might not be everyone's everyday ice cream spot. read more

Oh. My. God. When I first tasted the ice cream, I almost sweet creamed in my cone. (Did that come off gross? It was supposed to be cheeky). Anyway- I came because a friend was raving about Salt and Straw and swore by it. Said it was the best ice cream in the world and I had to try. He said I had to have the salted caramel. I am not a huge ice cream person but I do enjoy some once in a while. I've tried Brusters and Handel's and I think they're overhyped. Of course I've had Baskin Robbin's, Thrifty's, Dreyers, Haagen-Dazs and so far HD is my favorite - until today. I had the salted caramel ribbon and I was totally blown away. I LOVED the vanilla ice cream and texture. I thought the caramel was incredible. I had never had ice cream as delicious as this. I called my boyfriend right away because he IS a big ice cream person and I had him choose a couple flavor pints I could take to him. He chose rum raisin and hazelnut cookie. I. Am. In. Love! The Pot o' Gold ice cream at Salt & Straw just stole my heart away, along with giving me calories in return, haha. But it was all worth it! There were more than a dozen patrons standing outside of the establishment when we arrived and everyone was enjoying ice cream cones. When I went inside there were 4 workers behind the counter taking care of the busy line (4 people in front of me and 15 behind) in a quick and fun manner. For being such a busy spot for desert, it was all contained nicely. The store itself was clean, had welcoming decor, and smelled like waffle cone heaven! I expected it to be loud since so many people had walked in just after me, but the crowd was controlled and we all waited patiently for our turn up to the counter. The gentleman that served me asked if we would like any free samples, bless him, but I went straight for my order. It did, indeed, taste just like LUCKY CHARMS! Ughhhh.... My teenage antics of midnight bowels of cereal came back to me and I loved every bite of it. This location is a couple of blocks up the hill from the Manhattan Beach pier. The location is pretty much designed for people to stand in line to order ice cream. The seating area is very limited inside. It troubles me to come to places like this. I always have a flavor in mind that I want to order. Then I see the menu with the limited edition flavors. And even though they are closing soon, the cheerful employee encourages me to try a flavor, and then other, and another. And therein lies the problem. My son and I have been to the Culver City location and didn't experience feeling awkward or being stared at. Go figure. But, we were treated with respect, ice cream was delicious, and prices are what they are. You pay for what you get. I'm willing to pay the price for delicious ice cream. I would go back. I almost chose Gelato Angels but one reviewer mentioned this place. Then I noticed nearby Manhattan Beach Creamery which was too mainstreaming for me minus the maple bacon flavor and I liked the sound of Salt more than Angels. Salt seems like it is slightly going for classy but snooty but still good but also still accessible to anyone pretty much and I think they do a good job of it. Flavorful ice cream. Some of their common flavors are unusual. The sample I had of the olive oil and their coffee sorbet (special) were eh to me. I was expecting to like their strawberry tres leches the most and I liked it but I liked my pear and blue cheese scoop the most! The sample I had of the pear wasn't bad but it came out when I had the actual Paid scoop. The real pears bit and the blue cheese wasn't strong which I feel bodes well for an ice cream format. I happen to like blue cheese but still consider it an odd combo. But I went for it because I am here and I can go for stuff like that. Plus what other shop would be brazen enough to be able to offer that as a regular flavor? I think I read a Philly reviewer visiting a FL one and she said it was too sweet. My sweet tolerance is fairly high which is nice but it scares me if I am in taking something that is too much sugar for me too. The flavor and realness of the pear is a winner for me though. And the staff was friendly . I also love that the sampler spoons could be put through a slot and be washed and reused. Not a lot of seating and not expected to be. No public bathroom for customers. I am not sure if I like Salt, Jenis, or Van Leuwen more but they each hold their own. And yes I totally might be blindsided by the hype of the different flavors and I am not necessarily good with or care about dairy quality as much as flavor combos. The nearest street corner to here has walk signals that are different than most places. It actually works well but you need to follow the walk signals here and not the car street lights. People cross from all ends at the same time including diagonally in about 30 second window. This should clue you in to what kind of place you're in.
