My hubby and family came here for lunch after visiting the quaint town of Crozet and and stocking up at Chiles Orchard. Crozet is a small community with few restaurants, so if you're hankering for Italian, there aren't many choices at your dispo"sal"! We, however, were warmly welcomed into this somewhat drab joint and settled in our booth. Beer & wine was chosen, although the wine pour was skimpy for the price. The menu had a wide variety of Italian favorites. I chose the Philly cheesesteak served on a fresh, warm hoagie roll (also known as subs or grinders) which was tasty while not stand out. A good but not great sandwich. My sis had the Italian sub and she said it could have had more meat, but was also pretty good. Bro ordered the burger, meh, nuff said. And hubs ordered this huge calzone with onion rings. The calzone was really good as I gleaned a bite or two, a melty cheesy, meaty moon of Italian goodness. The onion rings were crispy and delish. His meal was the best of the four. Mostly average food & prices, in this nondescript eatery, in dire need of a facelift. And, while it was satisfactory, it wasn't out of this world. While I wouldn't necessarily seek this place out, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to returning if we were in the neighborhood! I like to try the pizza, so I'll keep you posted! read more

While in the area I stopped in here for lunch with co-workers... From the outside, it appears like any typical neighborhood pizza and sub shop, but it's definitely not that at all... They make everything fresh in-house and they do an outstanding job with what they do make! Their "sub rolls" aren't really rolls at all, they're actually an interesting shaped sandwich bread roll made from their pizza dough and they taste amazing! I tried their steak & cheese and it was perfectly made and tasted great! Their onion rings are also outstanding!! A flop from the past. This is the kind of place that was probably the place to go in the early 80s... and from the looks of it, nothing has changed since then. And they definitely need a ventilation update. You WILL leave smelling like food. We stopped in, placed an order to go, went next door to pick up some things, went back, and proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. We sat directly in front of the counter, so there's no way they couldn't have seen us. After waiting way too long, we got up and approached the counter. Without saying a word, the girl said she just sent word to the kitchen to see if our order was ready. In seconds, he brings it out... already packaged. HOW LONG HAD IT BEEN SITTING BACK THERE WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO GO GET IT? Surely it was already ready long before we lost patience and stood up to ask about it. One star because I can't do less. Food was awful and had no flavor. The cheese wasn't melted and were just squares of cheese slapped on top of the pasta. The Caesar salad was NOT a Caesar salad. We wanted to try some pizza outside of our usual pizza joint (Crozet Pizza) and we found Sal's! Here's my review! Food: A- We ordered a half-and-half style pizza with Caveman and Deluxe styles. We also ordered the everything-meat calzone. And just to top it off, we got some glazed, cinnamon donut-like goodies. Everything was great, particularly the dessert donuts. We were extremely happy with the entire order. Staff: A Everyone was awesome and happy and honestly made us feel good just ordering there. Love Sal's Pizza. We live in Crozet and order takeout regularly. The "white" pizza is great. It isn't a traditional white, in that it is a normal pizza, without sauce. This is classic pizza with a New Jersey flair. Thin crust with ample accompaniment, and a great value for the price. We recently moved from southern New Jersey, and sitting for lunch or dinner at Sal's brings back good memories. The menu is full, with multiple pizza varieties and sizes. As other reviews have mentioned, the crust is excellent -- crisp and not overdone with dough, yet solid enough to hold the choice of toppings. The hand-thrown technique really comes through in the final product. Moreover, there are five different sizes to ensure that you're ordering exactly the desired pie. Sals is a great local pizza place. It's family owned and operated. The owner, Jerry, is on site every night but Sunday. The food is consistent and well prepared. The prices are fair and portions are generous. The pizza is a typical thin crust with a mild marinara and plenty of cheese. They carry all the typical toppings and is a favorite for my kids. Was in crozet on business and decided to try sals. What a mistake. First sign I see is their chalkboard sign saying they were closed for the 4th, its the 10th. Anyway I walk in and there are 2 people there. No music or anything playing so its uncomfortably quiet. The place is dark and dirty looking. I went to Sal's for the first time this evening and I was not disappointed. The meatball sandwich was awesome--particularly the homemade "pizza bread." The pizza was also delectable. Thin and delicious with a slightly sweet sauce. But it was the service that really sold me during this visit to Sal's. When I was ordering I expressed my ambivalence about getting a sub or a pizza to the woman behind the counter (perhaps the owner?). Reluctantly, I decided to get the sandwich and to try their pizza at a later date. However, when I came to pay and pick up my order the woman slipped a couple free slices of pizza into a bag for me. This is first class service, and I will definitely be back again. read more

Pizza: Crust is textbook New York thin crust that you can fold. Consistent cooking has been determined after sampling slices on different days and times. Somewhat annoying (wink) that every slice sample did not drip oil onto my clothes. The lack of grease and other factors makes this pizzeria one of my preferred choices. Inside the Cornicione (crust lip or handle) reveals a crumb that is to be expected for pizza dough: large pockets and small pockets of air bubbles. Good sign of allowing the dough to cold rise. Undercrust is firm and flexible. Red sauce is a subtle foundation to the rest of the pie: not overly seasoned, good deep tomato flavor and color. Even when sampling straight out of the oven the toppings and cheese remained with no avalanche of pizza ingredients falling off the slice. Good judgment in sauce, cheese, topping ratio. Staff are generous insuring grated cheese and other add-ons are offered with take out orders. Plates and napkins provided as well. Stromboli/Calzone (small): Stromboli ingredients was fresh, eye appealing, and flavorful. Good judgment in seasoning allowing each ingredient the opportunity to speak. Marina sauce was adequate- I'm used to a slightly sweeter sauce, but found it acceptable. Crust was not overpowering- some places use too much and it ruins the balance between dough and filling. Pleasantly surprised on the Stromboli. The calzone (ham/Italian sausage) was different in construction from my own creation. Typically I load the inside with mozzarella and ricotta and neglect the meats, using them as an afterthought. Sals once again exercised good judgment in balancing cheese/dough/meats. Same sauce used as for the Stromboli. Again, I lean towards a slightly less acidic sauce for a calzone, but found it acceptable. Boxes for take out sturdier and appreciated. I considered 4 stars for Sals only because my preference for sauce would have more basil and oregano. In weighing my review I gave them the fifth star because they didn't force me to accept a seasoned sauce like other pizzerias in the area. Thank you for making pizza that is annoyingly good. The worst part eating Sals pizza is the last bite. read more

Apple picking Road trip to charlottesville with family led me to Sals. After a couple hours picking apples, and eating country style donuts ... we were recommended to Sals for pizza. We were looking for authentic NY style. We got something close.. but NY style is very hard to duplicate. Our group was 5 adults and 6 kids. We seated ourselves, the place was small and almost full but we got there just in time to grab 2 tables. Our server was okay.. she was nice, but didnt clear away plates or refill glasses like she should have and she never came to ask how everything was. Dissapointing. The food: it was pretty good, we ordered 2 large cheeze pies, and 1 meat lover type, pasta and some pitchers of soda. The pizza was piping hot.. as in burn-the-skin-on-the-roof-of-my-mouth-hot. Crust was okay, I liked my pizza but just wasnt wowed by it. Im a serious pizza critic, always in search of a good pizza pie in VA. The one thing that was so odd was the number of women behind the counter. Im not sure if the entire staff is female but there were a good 4-5 ladies behind the counter and a couple more serving. Odd for a pizzeria, Im used to seeing guys back there. My one true complaint was the bathroom... its in the back in a creepy dark hallway next to the kitchen. There was pee all around the base of the toilet..nearly impossible to avoid stepping in.. Paper towels were sloppy and it just didnt look like anyone paid any attention to cleanliness in the restroom. Hopefully this was just a busy night. They really need to make the hallway better lit..the lighting is way too dark. My 9 year old was scared to walk through there. Would I go back?
