I got a decent haircut at a reasonable price. But it is never what I want. People there are always messing up, whether it is not the buzz I want or the style I want. In addition, there is a new guy working there and I know that because I never seen him before. He had the worse attitude when it came to me not being fast enough for him. I'm on the autism spectrum and it makes me a little slow when using my hands to do things at times or trying to conjure up the right words because my brain is a lot slower then other people. I told him that from the beginning but throughout my haircut, he would get very impatient and be quite rude when I couldn't answer him right away or pull my money out right away to pay him. read more

Yes I graduated from Northeastern but fell in love with The City and never left The Fenway now for 50 years. I can't remember how long I've been going to Sal's but it's a long, long time. Let's not mince words here; these guys cut hair and they cut it short, that's it! If you're looking for a Newbury Street or boutique style haircut then you best just run away. I went in for a haircut a few weeks back, and yes, from the guy in the middle seat (just the luck of the draw). First, the 'Edward Scissorhands" style scissors he pulled out to do the finishing work was a bit intimidating but I must give him credit, he knew what he was doing. If I may digress, back when I was a little lad, I recall getting haircuts where they finished with a straight razor and hot lather for the hairs on the back of your neck. It wasn't until a business trip to Hong Kong that brought back memories of what a real 'Baber Shop' should be and NOW, I am able to have the exact experience in Boston once again! In short (pun intended), this is a real Barber Shop and they only cut hair one way, short. If you're looking for a sharp and "squared away look" then go to Sal's, if not, there are plenty of other places that will cater to your hair styling needs. read more

Agree with the guy who said that Ali is the man. Everyone is good but he is worth the wait. dude is a maestro when it comes to cutting hair. He takes his time, never rushes and always makes sure its perfect. Everyone else there is good as well, and the guys are really nice. They also have a TV on all the time there and plenty of magazines if you end up waiting. there is a pizza place next door and plenty of metered parking out front. read more

If you like your hair very short then this is a great place to go. They have really good SHORT haircuts, but they seem to only have one real 'style' of cut.. The past two times I've gone I asked for just a light trim and ended up with a near buzz cut or shave. It seems everyone who comes in and out of this place has the same general cut as well. I was recommended by a friend and wish I'd read through the reviews on here before I went. I *do* have short hair and did want a relatively short cut, but I showed an example picture and it's definitely not what I got. The guy (he didn't introduce himself but he was the only conspicuously white guy in there) seemed to just do what he wanted. My sideburns are obviously uneven and much shorter than I wanted. The sides, which should have been mostly or entirely done with scissors to match the pictures, he just went at with an electric razor and now they look like they're growing out from a buzz. The top is very choppy, with the shorter sides pushed up higher than I wanted. It looks like I cut my own hair, which I know because I used to cut my own hair. Except at least by myself I could just keep being meticulous until it was even! I've heard the other barbers here are better but for $20 (sounds like they charged me a couple bucks more than my friend who recommended it; not sure why) I'll just pay the extra $5 and go back to Razor's in Somerville, where I've never gotten a cut I don't like. (Also, at Razor's people have handled my cowlick really well so it doesn't stick up too much...right now I have a real Alfalfa problem.) read more

Here's the deal with this place... All the Barbers in this place are good, but Ali is the guy that cuts hair in the second chair in and the guy is an ARTIST with SCISSORS! He is very thorough, takes his time and constantly goes over and over to make sure there is not 1 hair not cut to the correct length. Most barber's try to punch out as many heads of hair as they can, but not this guy... It's a perfect haircut, every single time! You can ask to wait for him (and many people do). There is usually a little, to long wait except at odd times (10AM or 2PM). read more

As a preface: I have never reviewed a business on Yelp, but made this account just to review this business. My friend got a haircut from your place about a week and a half ago, and my lord did you mess his hair up. It was so bad that he chose not to write a bad review because, as he put it [paraphrased] "any barbershop that gives this awful of haircuts wouldn't improve from constructive criticism because it's already so far below any sort of standard.". A consistently good haircut from friendly people in a short amount of time at a convenient location, and all for $16 (I usually give them $20) -- I like it! The place is neither new nor shiny, but feels perfectly comfortable. They're not artists but craftsmen -- you choose the the setting (1/7 to 1 inch), and they'll buzz the sides and back of your head, trim your sideburns, then cut the hair at the top of your head with scissors and finish by shaving the back of your neck (in style). No shampooing or scalp massages or anything of the sort. They don't take credit cards, but there's an ATM nearby (Bank of America, 300 ft further East on Huntington Ave). They open 9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday. read more

save your money. these people don't know how to cut hair. went in a couple days ago and had my neck brutally butchered with a clipper - I was shocked to see I still had skin. A child can probably do a better job with scissors and save you the 20$. read more

I recently came across an old email I wrote about my experience with Sal's and I felt like I should share it with the world... So, I got my haircut today during my lunch break. I went to a 'Sal's' on Huntington Ave, not far from where I work. I'm familiar with the establishment known as 'Sal's.' I went once before, and only once, and today I was reminded why. This place makes an effort to perpetuate the stereotype that plagues all barber shops. That they are merely fronts for a more sinister business. Like drugs or the mafia. Or pokemon cards. At this place there's a calendar on the wall for March 2007, the men working there appear to be Eastern European, and they conduct their work with a skill and professionalism that I would expect of any individual employed in a position that they probably have no background or training in... The man, let's call him Sal, spoke to me in an accent that was hard to understand. I think I caught all of his questions and answered correctly, but I can't be sure. Sal asked if I wanted him to use the machine or scissors on the sides of my head, and I said machine because that's how it's done at my normal place. So, he said "size four?" I knew that number corresponded to the length of the clipper, and thus how much it would take off, but I didn't know what four was relative too. Would that be long or short? Not wanting to ask, or even talk, I said 'Sure.' He then shaved off a side of my head, and asked "Is ok?" I resisted the temptation to say "No, that's too short. Put it back." Instead, I just went with the flow, as I always do while getting a haircut. I can now somewhat understand how women get really upset after they get their haircut (and they do always get upset). You get attached to it, I guess. I tend to resolve this problem by always assuming that I might need to shave my head completely after the barber f's up royally. This is similar to how I make peace with my life before getting on an airplane. Just on a smaller scale. At one point during my visit, Sal discovered a white hair growing out of my forehead (something not uncommon for me, unfortunately). He didn't know what to make of it. He wasn't sure if he should ignore it, as a courtesy, or style it. He went with the latter, and used the electric clippers on it. I wish I were making this up. There's one thing I like about Sal's. At the end he uses a straight razor (old school style) on the back of your neck. Strangely, Sal seemed most at home (and professional) with a blade in his hand. I got the feeling he likes to cut people. I got a strange chill down my spine when he was standing behind me with the razor blade hovering just over my neck. I think it was fear that he might just jab it in between my vertebrate, leaving me paralyzed. But it also could have been homo-eroticism. Who knows these days. Another thing I noticed about getting a hair cut is that no matter where I go, when the person cutting my hair is about 80% done I think it looks great, and then something always happens during that last 20% that makes it look like poop. And then I don't really like my hair cut until a week before I need to get it cut again... All and all, Sal's left me looking both manly and professional. Which is to say, not fashionable and ugly. I'll still give it 3 stars. The place has character. read more

I am a Northeastern student and needed to find a barber at school. Sal's is close to campus, has decent hours and prices, and they do a good job. The staff is incredibly friendly especially once you get to know them. I always get my hair cut pretty short and I know they specialize more with shorter cuts. Ali absolutely is a great barber but if he's busy or not around they all give a very good cut. Would recommend this place to anyone I know looking for a consistently good haircut. read more

Let me preface this by saying I used to go here on a regular basis and was a totally satisfied customer. I think that one dude still gives solid cuts. But everyone else will just straight up ignore whatever requests you make about your haircut. I asked for a scissor trim cuz I didn't want to take much off. The guy promptly pulled out a buzzer and started shaving the sides of my head. Then he proceeded to shorten the length of my sideburns by about half without even asking. Not only that but they weren't even straight across - I will have to try and fix them when I shave later. The guy who cut my hair was also rude. He acted like I was putting him out the entire time. He also did not use the straight razor across the back, which I used to get every time without fail. This place has gone downhill. read more

I had never been to Sal's before Thursday. I didn't know that they didn't take a credit card. After my haircut the barber said "That's OK, come back anytime to pay me; no rush." I got home that night and my wife said "That's the best haircut you've ever had." The cut only cost me $16 plus tip. I'll be going to Sal's from now on... read more

I started going here when I worked a few doors down from them. Now I work in Somerville and live in Waltham and I go out of my way to get a haircut here. They do a great job nearly every time. It was the first place I ever went to that used a straight razor on your neck. I thought that was a great touch. I wish they were open on Saturday or were open a little later than 6pm during the week. I have to drive there, so finding a parking spot is a challenge, but you can say that for just about any where in Boston. read more

ABSOLUTELY TERRRRRRRIBLE! DO NOT DO NOT GO HERE! My boyfriend had long layered amazing hair that he always got compliments on and asked them to just trim a couple inches off just to clean up a little for a job interview. MUCH to my dismay, they gave him the ABSOLUTE WORST haircut I have EVER seen. It looks like a girl hair cut/bowl cut, is really short, really ugly, and just plain ridiculous looking. I don't understand how any lisenced barber could really cut hair in such a style, or who in the world would ever want a hair cut like that. I really have never seen such a horrible, embarrassing haircut, and now he has to go to a job interview with it on Monday. Thanks for nothing. No wonder it was only $15.. they really should lose their lisence,I don't know how they even got it. Maybe this is a place for short hair, but if you have long hair that you're unsure about cutting, or just want a trim, DO NOT go here, save yourself a terribly embarrassing haircut! Even all our roommates won't shut up about it- it's really that bad.
