If you are in search of a great barber in the area, definitely check this place out. This was my second time here. First time I looked up a solid place for a hot shave for my father (he had a broken hand and couldn't shave). I came today for my own hot shave (head and face). Between the hot towel, the warm shaving cream, the shave, the reapplication of shaving cream, the second go around, and the almond aftershave the whole experience was very relaxing. My only complaint is that there was a little irritation which was likely do to the fact my skin isn't used to that kind of blade or shaving cream. It was $30 for the whole bit which seemed to be very reasonable in price considering the time he spent on me. My friend got a haircut he really liked for $20. I think for a location just off of Newbury, you probably wont be able to find something with the same service for these prices. Very frustrating experience. We made appointments yesterday and today through the online service, we found on the businesses website. The appointments were accepted by the business with emails and text messages.. when my husband showed up yesterday at the appointed time, nobody was there. When my son showed up today at the appointed time we rang, the door fell, repeatedly, and the owner what is very combative and said didn't know about the appointment. We explained that We went to his website and used his online booking system. We were unable to get out. Words each time before he interrupted with anger. We finally got through to him and said that it we made the appointment on HIS website and the appointment was accepted and confirmed in emails and text messages at which time he challenged us to prove it to him. When he saw the confirmations that his website sent us, he said that the guy doesn't work there anymore, as if it were our fault that we signed up for someone who is literally on the businesses website! At the end, after another tirade, the owner snarled that we had interrupted his lunch (it was 4:30pm), but that he would cut my son's hair if he wanted it cut and "didn't ask any questions". that was just about the strangest thing that we heard! My son who is 21 would no more have this man come close to him with a razor than he would submit himself to an angry doctor with a scalpel. I don't know what is going on with this business, but the level of aggression we experienced for simply making appointments and showing up to get haircut, was out of line. I was skeptical with some of the negative reviews but thought I'll give it a try. Especially with the COVID my potions were limited. And I'm so glad I did. It's your casual barber shop. Maybe a bit pricy to some but being at the location they are, I went in with realistic expectations. The barber (whose name I forgot to ask) greeted me kindly and was very polite, asking all i needed done and the style I wanted. He took all the COVID protection measures, wiping down the chair properly, cleaning his tools and ensuring both our masks were on. Overall made me feel comfortable. As for his style. He works first but not very creatively. Did exactly what I had wanted and I feel good about the haircut. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great barber. read more

One of the best classic barber shops I've ever been too (even a little Ghetto when the owner and his homies start arguing in their native language). Clean, friendly, and during the spring/summer when he leaves the windows open, you feel like you're in some LL Bean-ish resort barber with the perfect Bostonian neighborhood ambiance. This is a pretty nice barber shop with some pretty skilled barbers. I will say that this place is not cheap like Yelp suggests. I had a men's haircut that cost $60 (no wash). They trimmed about 2cm of hair (which I requested). Although the finished haircut is nice, and these barbers do have the skill, the price point is higher than what's advertised on Yelp. I've been here a few times because it's conveniently located near my work. Each time I've gone Michael has cut my hair and done an okay job, I end up usually asking him to cut more off the top/front. If you want 1 inch cut off the top you'll need to ask for 1.5-2 inches. He's not half bad, and if it was just him I'd probably give 3-3.5 stars. The problem comes from the awkward AF conversations between Abdul and his associates. I can completely understand banter between co-workers, but this is to a whole other level - accusing some of stealing money, absolutely insisting that everyone speaks English (when 1. nobody really cares 2. he's the guiltiest party), and then today everyone commenting about how ugly/fat a woman was who visited the shop. Anfa is the best barber shop I've found in Boston hands down, and I highly recommend In response to the few negative reviews on here, I feel they are mostly unwarranted. While some of the other barbers at Anfa can be hit-or-miss, getting an appointment with the owner is not hard -- I never have a problem getting a same-day timeslot, and I've gotten a great cut from Abduo every time. I've been going to Anfa for the last six months as it's close to home and work. I've been generally pleased with the haircut here (depending on who cuts your hair), and the price is reasonable given the location. However I recently had an unpleasant experience at Anfa that will mean I go elsewhere for a haircut going forward. I walked in at 10am on a Saturday (which was admittedly ambitious) and there was clearly a bit of a wait for a haircut. Abduo flashed his phone at me to show me the full calendar and said to come back at 1pm. OK, not ideal but I had other errands to run so not a big deal. At 1pm I was back at Anfa on time except there's another person there who apparently has a booking for 1pm. Abduo proceeds to then berate me for not booking the 1pm slot online - of course I had no idea that this was necessary, and I was at a bit of a loss why he couldn't have done this when he told me to come back at 1pm. I'll chalk this up to miscommunication and a simple misunderstanding, but what bothered me was that there was no attempt to apologize or rectify the situation, instead I received an earful for not listening, even though there was never any mention of booking online! Needless to say, I'm disappointed with the customer service at Anfa, despite having had a reasonable if not amazing overall impression of the barber shop up until now. Disappointing decline in the quality of service here. Abdou himself is a great barber and a good guy, but the rest of the barbers are a bit of a revolving door and a total hit or miss. More frustratingly, the costs of his cuts have gone way up and his ability to manage clients has gone down. The last two times, my appointment has been blown off as he is way behind schedule. What is the point of setting appointments if you never hold them? It was frankly easier in the past when it was walk-in only because you could at least call ahead and know whether or not the line was long. If I knew each time I went in that I could wait a short bit (or not at all!) and get a cut from Abdou, I'd happily pay his higher prices. But until the time management issues are fixed, I'll be going elsewhere. read more

Wanted to like this place...but too many red flags. 1. Arrived around 1pm during a weekday and the gentleman there proceeded to ask me to wait (when no one was there), while he had a conversation for 5-10 minutes with some random guy. 2. Once in the chair, he proceeded to rush through my haircut so fast and did a TERRIBLE job (ex. uneven sides, lack of blending, etc.) and mind you, my haircut is nothing fancy- a 2 on the back and sides, scissors on top. $35 for this? 3. I returned later that day, asking for him to fix the terrible job he did. After making me wait for him to seat and cut another guy's hair who came in before me, he got around to fixing the poor haircut he did. For $5 more, I could have gone to the Barber Shop Lounge a block down the street and sat in an oversized leather chair while scantily clad women served me complimentary beer as I wait (seriously). I would highly recommend avoiding service from Mike, a barber at Anfa. Mike stole a pair of noise canceling headphones from a client, and it was discovered (after the headphones were missing for 4 weeks, and after the employees confirmed they didn't have the headphones) that Mike had taken these headphones home and was using them as his own. One of the Anfa colleagues confessed to what had happened 4 weeks later, which was how we were able to recover the headphones. Any business that employs a person who blatantly lies and steals something that is someone else's property should think twice about the face of the business, and the lack of professionalism that is translated as a result of this behavior. While I appreciate someone owning up to the mistake, Mike never took responsibility, and only apologized at the owner's request. read more

Finally a high quality and reasonably priced barber shop in the Back Bay! I've been traveling to Brighton since 2000 to get my haircut at an old-fashioned barber shop that did a good job and was affordable. The commute was getting a bit irritating but I just couldn't justify paying $40+ for a standard men's short haircut. When I saw that a barber shop was opening up right next to my work I got excited. But the true happiness came after my first haircut with Abdul was complete. He used the clippers briefly to shear off the long hair an create his desired shape. Then the scissor work began as he carefully sculpted away with close attention to detail. Five weeks later the haircut held up and grew out very evenly, unlike when a lesser barber uses the clippers to perform the entire haircut in 5 minutes. Overall: $17 for a legit haircut in the Back Bay and a friendly barber who takes pride in his work. The shop is modern and very clean with flat screens and a great view of Newbury Street. Ive been in Boston for 5 years now and I have no idea how I didn't find this place earlier. For some reason, no one in Boston knows how to give a good tape-up. At home in NY, I could go to just about any place and they do it in about 15 minutes flat. I usually avoid getting my haircut in Boston because I somehow end up with a buzzcut. I finally found a place that's close to home, fairly cheap and knows how to cut hair. Dan was my barber last time I went in, which was a Saturday morning. Much to my surprise, I only waited 5 minutes and I was up next. Dan is extremely precise and thorough and it was by far the best haircut I have gotten since Ive been in Boston. In Florida, this is 25 dollars at most, and most places in Boston that are marked as $ generally charge up to 25. This was absurd and I didn't feel like I had any room to negotiate. The owner was quick to greet me on a quiet Saturday morning, after i'd gone in search of a simple barbershop in the city. i didn't expect to find something similar to what i grew up with; friendly-but-crotchety old men in a first-floor shop in downtown or back-roads Plymouth, but it surely had to be better than paying fancy prices for a simple haircut. We moved to Boston a few months ago and I have been hunting for a place to get a haircut. I found Anfa on Yelp and selected them because of a combination of good reviews and the fact that they were open on Saturday and took walk-ins. I have a relatively simple haircut, and get it cut about once per month. The cut is clippers on the side/ back and scissors on the top/ bangs. Bad barber experiences leave me with uneven lines and levels on the sides/ back ...or a top that is not cut to blend nicely into the clipped sides/back and looks like a mop-top ontop of a buzzcut. I was very pleased with the barbers at Anfa. The first time I went there they did a great job just based on my basic description of how the last barber I had cut my hair (in fact I think they did a better job). I have gone back once since that first visit, and they remembered me and remembered how to cut my hair. The parking is a little tricky since Newbury Street is always packed and parking around there is non-existent -- but the service and prices are worth the hassle. read more
