Called Wheeler Davis and spoke to the owner. Explained my needs, including a color correction and wanted a fabulous longterm stylist to work with as I was modeling. Discovered he booked me with the 'walk in stylist" so I only booked a consult. During my consult I realized the stylist knew her stuff and wondered why the salon wasn't allowing her to build a client base. Well I discovered why when a few months later over half the staff walked out due to poor working conditions, unhappy clients and along with a dose of snooty vibe. I followed the stylist who did my color correction and have been with her ever since. Heard Lo is interested in the Who's Who and famous people in the surfing world which I understand from a marketing standpoint. In my message, I specifically shared that I was looking for a queer/trans-friendly salon. I also explained that I have been a loyal client who has previously flown out of state to see my longtime stylist, but I was hoping to find someone local. I never received a response to my message, so I called. The person that answer confirmed the owner had received message and told me a person outside their salon would be a "better fit." I reached out to that person as well and received no response. Message received. The whole experience was disappointing and honestly painful. Looking for a new stylist as a queer/trans person already comes with a lot of anxiety around whether a space will actually be safe and welcoming. Sadly, this interactions let me know that my concerns were real. I can't speak to their intentions, but I can speak to the impact: I did not feel welcomed, wanted, or safe as a prospective LGBTQ client. I wish businesses could be more direct about who they aren't prepared to serve, because being quietly redirected elsewhere after explicitly asking for a queer/trans-friendly space feels awful.
