Maria fixed my hair after a stylist from a different salon left it...not so great. Thanks Maria!
    Zack B.

You should get your hair cut at Salon Quency. If you don't read anymore of this review, just know that the very first sentence is all you need to know. Salon Quency's online booking system is easy and convenient. I'm the kind of guy who likes doing as much on the computer as possible, so extra points to these folks for that. My first two visits to Salon Quency were with Brailyn, and he is phenomenal (and very nice!). He has great attention to detail and was very helpful in offering style tips. Unfortunately I am an idiot and needed a haircut in a pinch one day, and Brailyn wasn't available and the other stylists were booked, so I took a risk on a corporate salon-that-will-not-be-named. My haircut from the bad place was...well...really bad. But I lived with it, and months went by living in regret for not going back to Salon Quency. Fast forward six months and I've learned my lesson. I booked an appointment with the next available stylist and was matched with Maria. In addition to being sweet, Maria was very helpful in determining how to cut my hair. She took extra care to always ask if a particular length or angle was okay with me, and I greatly appreciated that. My only directions for my cut were "make it look modern but professional" and Maria came through. The way the bad place had cut my hair turned it into a disaster -- Maria fixed all that and brought my style back to health! THANK YOU MARIA! Some other tidbits: Salon Quency will offer you water, coffee or wine -- yes WINE. Very nice. Their computer system stores your credit card info from when you originally booked your appointment online, so you don't even need to swipe your card as you leave. All stylist tips are through Venmo, which makes the final payment for a haircut a little less pressure. Don't forget to scan your stylist's Venmo QR code before you leave!

I chose the salon for my wedding dye and cut (for me and my mother), based on my good (past) experience with John, who has since left. After this last experience, I won't be back. A few highlights: - Bad scheduling and lack of communication: I had a 10:30 AM appointment. After arriving at 10:00, I was told I could not wait inside, even though they were open, but that they would call me when I could come in. They never did. I finally walked in at 10:20 and had to wait until about 10:50, when they finally started service, not with me, as originally scheduled, but with my mother, who had the bleaching appointment. I let it slide, since I knew her service would take longer, but they should've told me they would start with her and schedule accordingly - it took another hour by the time they started on me, so I could've just come later. Also, the stylist's estimate for a hair bleaching was WAY off. He started at 10:50 AM and was originally scheduled to finish by 3:00 PM. By 5:10 PM, he was still not done, and still had to complete the haircut and blow-dry. At that point, we couldn't wait any longer (I had already left for a 4:00 PM errand and had to come back for my mom), so my mother had to leave without a haircut (which I had already paid for) and with her hair still half wet. I understand that bleaching is an extensive and complex procedure, with a length that varies based on numerous elements (including hair type, natural color, previous dye jobs, etc.), but I would've appreciated an open-ended appointment or even as estimate closer to "we don't know how long it's going to take, so plan to be here between 4 and 7 hours." He also failed to mention my mother's hair would have a lavender hue for 1-2 washes before turning fully white - an essential detail, as we were a few days away from my wedding and didn't have time to wash our hair basically every other day until finally achieving the color we had paid for. He had told me she'd walk out of the salon with fully white hair. That was certainly not the case (see photo, where she inexplicably has 3 colors - blonde strands, lavender strands and white strands). I had also showed them example photos when I made the appointment, but was asked to show photos again when we came in for the service, as if they didn't remember anything. - AC temp is set to freezing. I got a cold after being left for over 20 min with wet hair (after being shampooed) directly under the AC vent blasting very cold air. Nobody came to check on me or gave me any indication of how long I'd need to sit there. When I finally got up and moved to an area farther from the vent, I told them I was cold and had not been given any timeline for how long this would take. Instead of apologizing/offering some hot tea/offering to adjust the temperature, the receptionists' reaction was to run to the back and tell my stylist I had complained, so he came out and told me I was magically "done". The entire time, my shampooer was walking around looking at her phone and acting like I had inconvenienced her. - The music is loud. Not as loud as needing to shout to make myself heard, but loud enough that it feels like a hip restaurant or bar rather than a relaxing salon. Didn't even think about complaining, since my hair stylist was singing along with the music, so obviously they like it this way. - Receptionists have a slightly impertinent attitude - e.g. they just stare at you when you complain about something like you're a lunatic or act inconveniences, instead of apologizing and offering to adjust anything that needs adjusting. - I called the following Tuesday to have the credit they had offered for my mother's haircut turned from a credit for a future appointment into a refund. I also asked for the breakdown of costs. After explaining everything, the receptionist first said "so you want to make an appointment?", had me repeat everything, then she said she'd have to call me back after speaking to a manager. She never did. Instead, they communicated via texts and omitted (again) to give me the breakdown of the service costs until I asked again. - They do not provide any parking, and the receptionist was clueless when I asked her for parking options. If you don't routinely drive in the city, it can be stressful to try to arrange parking while getting services at the salon. We were able to park near the salon, but we had to keep extending and paying for parking because of the aforementioned incorrectly estimated appointment time. Every other business I've been to in DC is ready to provide parking information to customers (some even specify it on their websites). To be greeted with a shrug and an "I don't really know" from the front desk is unacceptable. If you don't have high standards, this place is fine. But if you expect a modicum of competence, professionalism or respect, seek elsewhere.

How I requested my hair (literally showed this picture from a couple of weeks after my last haircut 3 months ago).

Did I receive a professional cut at a fair price?  Yes.  It's not like they sliced my ear or I have to wear a hat or a wig.  But it's also nothing like what I asked for.  Despite this being a unisex salon, they really can't seem to resist the urge to do anything but fades for men, and took at least 3 inches more off the back and sides than I requested.  Fair warning that if one of your Covid revelations is that you like your hair longer, and you just want it cut to look cleaner and more professional, this is not the place for you.  They will cut it like it's 2019. Very disappointed and will not return.

    Subtle chocolate balayage by John!
    Olivia G.

Having never died my hair before, I was nervous to get balyage. I studied numerous places in DC and Arlington to find the perfect person I could trust with my hair. After searching for a few days and finally deciding to make an appointment (wanted to get it done since February) I knew I didn't have to worry if my hair was in the hands of John. John is the most talented young hair stylists I have ever met and is already making a foot print in DC. I can't wait to see what celerities hair he will be doing out in LA one day! He not only knows how to do a GREAT BALAYAGE but he has tricks that I don't think many other DC balayage artists will know. Not to mention the price at this place is unbeatable, I paid $188 for a balyage and cut! Most Balyage is $200-$275 and that's without a cut. Love my hair, the staff here, and John!

    Reopening haircut!

I have been going to Salon Quency for a couple of years now and have always had a great experience. When they were closed during the stay-at-home order I was wondering how they were going to reopen and make sure it was a safe environment for their customers and staff. No doubt Quency was thinking the same and has taken extra steps to ensure public health and safety are a top priority. When you first walk in, you'll see that all of the staff are wearing PPE. Also, while getting my haircut I observed how they were cleaning and disinfecting after one customer left and before the next sat down, including the rinse station. Bottomline, I'm thankful they are back open and appreciate the extra efforts made to protect us all. Plus, I feel great after my haircut!

    Cancellation policy
    Sheva T.

Really bummed by the customer service here. Booked my appointment over a month in advance because a friend of mine recommended Quency specifically. I was booked for a Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm, work ran long, and if I were to take a Lyft, I'd be like 20+ minutes late for the appointment and it woulda been like a $30 Lyft ride. I wanted to call and make sure that I could still be seen. Once I get through to someone on the line, she asks if she can put me on hold. I say, "Sure." Two minutes go by and I hang up and call again. No answer. I called five times before putting my hands up in the air and bursting into tears. Like Jesus. I had been up since 6am for work and was really looking forward to getting my hair done this weekend. As I'm crying on the sidewalk I get a call back from a lady named Stefany and she goes, "Hi. Yes, we have a couple of missed calls from you." YES!! I explain to her how I've been frantically calling and that my appointment is at 1pm, but I'm not gonna make it. Could I possibly come in later in the day. First thing out of her mouth is, "We have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy so we're going to go ahead and charge you 50% of the cost of the service." My response, "Cool." And then I hung up. Because I could tell she was going to try and reschedule me for another appointment after charging me and I knew I would just say a slew of obscenities had I not hung up. I want to be respectful of other people's time, but a 50% charge for a service I didn't receive is ludicrous. I checked out their website after the fact and the lady did not need to assess a fee. Check out the highlighted portion of the screenshot I attached: "However, if last minute cancellations or 'no shows' become a habit, you will be charged a cancellation fee." It would've been my first time there. I wouldn't make that a habit. I called a few hours later after having calmed down and the same lady, Stefany answered, put me on hold for 5 minutes, and then I asked her if she could please delete my online profile with all of my personal information and credit card. She said, "Yes." So I thanked her and asked if she would send me a confirmation email of the deletion and she said, "Yeah, I'll try to figure that out and send it your way." Sick. I guess I won't hold my breath. Real shame that this person is the gatekeeper to all the stylists people seem to rave about. If any of the owners reads this, could you please delete my online profile from your website? Much appreciated. Thank you.
