It's a good place for haircuts but feels like the customer experience is a bit unpolished. Also, do not get the shave unless you like the feeling of a sharp razor scraping your dry, unprepared, and unprotected face. The good: the haircut I got was pretty good and reasonably priced. It seemed like one of the better barbershop haircuts I've gotten in recent years, and other customers I saw get a cut before me also had good cuts. The barbers here know their craft. The meh: 1. The barber who worked on me barely engaged me on what I wanted, having AirPods in his ear the whole time. The end result was good, but if I had been peculiar about my haircut, it would have been difficult to communicate my preferences. 2. The place is cash only and doesn't take appointments, plus its not very big, so if you go during the late afternoon on a busy day you may have to stand or wait outside. 3. The worst part of all, the shave is completely dry, as in, a straight razor to your dry, unprotected face. Not hot towel, no lather, just blade on skin. I suppose the barber did as good a job as could be expected under the circumstances, but it was the most irritating and unpleasant barbershop shave I've ever had. If you're going to do shaves like that I think you owe a duty to tell the customer in advance, since this is the first shop I have ever been to that does a straight dry shave. I can see why the shop has a loyal following. Personally, though, I do not anticipate going back. read more

I've started using Cuts by Hugo since I moved out of the Eastern Market. They remind me of my old barbershop with their attention to details and a reasonable price point for a standard haircut. Here are a few things I love about this barbershop: 1) they are open early at 6:00 AM, meaning that you could get your hair cut before work and still have time to go home and take a shower 2) store is really clean and not covered in hair 3) staff is nice and friendly Here are two things I wish the did differently: 1) I wish they took cards but gave a discount for customers paying with cash 2) If they could finish off the haircut with a straight razor and hot towel it would make all the difference! Even if a standard clipper does a good enough job of lining up the edges, just the appearance and feel of a straight razor makes me, as a customer, think that the barbershop went above and beyond. Especially when you add the hot towel at the end! If Cuts by Hugo were to incorporate those two things it would make the client experience more enjoyable. Regardless of that, I would recommend anyone to go check them out for an amazing haircut! read more

I went to them once and received an amazing haircut. Went back a second time and received the worst haircut of my life. I asked a 4 and it clearly is not a 4. I have thick great hair and it is completely gone. I told the barber not to touch the front of my hair only to thin the . I now have absolutely no hair. I have an event this weekend that I cancelled because I am so humiliated and embarrassed of how I look. I do not want to leave my house. The workers are very nice but I had the worst experience I've ever had in regards to a haircut and wasted my $40. Beyond embarrassed... Todd- Carlos and Richard have both cut my hair. Carlos did an incredible job. Richard, a really personable and incredibly nice guy, was the barber who just did a poor job. He didn't listen to what I asked for. I don't appreciate you accusing me of wrongly identifying your store. I know where I got my haircut. I've been there twice. The bad time was before my trip to New York that Richard and I talked about while he cut my hair. Just mention that and I know for a fact he'll remember. Oh and just to prove it to you my haircut occurred March 1, 2019. I caught a train to New York that afternoon. I was most definitely at your establishment. Part 2 - Todd this is ridiculous. I was there around 8:45-9:30 ish that morning. I was in jeans if that helps you and maybe a blue top. I came in as there were two other barbers working as Hugo, himself, was not there. I had a haircut on Saturday with Carlos. Nice guy, and friendly. I scheduled my appointment for 10:30 and unfortunately I was late, and even though he wasn't busy, he told me that I had to reschedule it. Since it was my fault to get there late and I appreciated for him to be respectful for other customers' time, I rescheduled my appointment for 1pm. I got there at 12:50, and he was giving a haircut to another customer so I waited. I wasn't expecting to wait until 1:25 for my haircut, since customers' time seemed to be important, but I still did patiently. I explained what I wanted with a picture as a reference (acknowledging that I don't look or have the same amount of hair as the model in the picture) since my last haircuts with my former barber were done just like the style I showed him without problem (unfortunately my barber is no longer available and I am looking for a new barber). We spoke in Spanish (we are both Hispanic) so we were able to be clear on what I wanted. The end product wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but I looked decent with my haircut. Just like any other dude with the faded look that I was trying to avoid. His technique was really good, gentle and precise. While he was using the hair clippers he accidentally cut the strap of my facemask around my ear and didn't offer an apology or a new disposable mask (probably having a few for customers to use and preventing damaging their reusable masks would be a good idea or simply being more careful would be great). I was waiting for him to give me a discount or offer something else as a gesture, but there was no iniciative. I still tipped him anyways because it has been a hard year for everybody. I'm still going to give another try to the barber shop because it's close by, it has great reviews and it was stablished by hardworking people. Looking forward for my next haircut. read more

Mario the original owner of this barbershop (previously called Mario's), is an icon among barbers in DC and still cuts hair there a few days a week. I was unhappy with my current barber, so I decided to try this place after reading the positive Yelp reviews. Big mistake. This is quite possibly the worst haircut I have ever received. Too short in the back, crooked bangs, and an abrupt line from 1/2 inch to 3 inches where the part should be. I asked him to use #4 clippers, and somehow ended up with about 1/8 in the back. Apparently he did not understand symmetry or how to blend either. He also managed to cut my ear while shaving around it. While that part is not a major problem, it's just an indication of the overall lack of quality. I guess I will be wearing a lot of hats for the next three weeks. For the record, the older guy furthest from the front door is the one who cut my hair. I don't plan on going back to try out the other two, so I will have to base the entire review on him. read more

I'm not a guy. Came from Miami Beach for the Travel Channel Academy and had to produce a little video. Watch someone in a store at work was required, so I had been out looking for a store that would allow me to film their employees. No luck. Then I asked someone at the Central Metro Station if he knows a barber shop and he directed me to Mario's. A young man was the only person working on a client and I was so happy when I was allowed to film.
