DO NOT GO HERE -- my first visit and I won't be returning. the "stylist" did NOT discuss enough what I wanted and just did her own thing, taking my hairline way too far back and giving me a super blunt short cut. I've encountered this type of stylist before where if you don't give explicit instructions they will NOT ask any questions. these type of lazy barbers don't understand that they are altering something everyone will see when they look at your face and it is irreversible until your hair grows back. a good hair stylist puts time and consideration into making their client look and FEEL THEIR BEST. it was also ridiculously expensive and if she had an ounce of training or taste then she must not have cared about making me look good at all. anyone with a basic (let alone "professional") understanding of hair can see that she did a truly abhorrent job here. AVOID AT ALL COSTS read more

If you are going here for the first time, the physical layout of the shop can be a bit confusing to walk into, but just poke around and you'll find who you're looking for. Also - you should be willing to actively communicate what you want your hair to look like, or at the very least bring a photo of exactly what you're looking for, and if you do, Semecka can get it done. She's remarkably talented. She'll talk if you feel like talking, or won't if you don't. Just remember, like everything else in life, communication is important if you intend to get what you want. Both personally and professionally, Semecka made me feel welcomed and heard, and she gives a fantastic haircut! She's earned a customer for the foreseeable future. read more

There's a reason John Lewis got his shaves here. The vibe is so chill & upscale masculine without being self-consciously trendy like those newer hipster grooming joints around Shaw. The master barbers are straightforward and relaxed in demeanor, while very talented, versatile, and precise in skill. Definitely worth their rate. I especially appreciate the charitable ways in which they give back to the community like providing haircuts for the homeless. And their excellent playlist that has me Shazaming and adding new songs to my iTunes every time. My only reason for not rating them five stars is that I had to fix my last cut at home, as it was completed by one of the apprentice barbers. It wasn't a catastrophic mistake, but I don't want to pay over $50 (or at all) for a cut that I didn't ask for, especially when I can cut it the way I like it at home. Next time I'll inspect the finished cut more closely before giving the thumbs up as that is partly on me. read more

Semecka was able to fit me in last minute and helped me out! She was very professional and gave an amazing cut, would recommend this place to anyone 10/10 read more

After getting a few cuts at a popular salon elsewhere in the city, I wanted to try somewhere new. HIS Grooming is in my neighborhood and came with great reviews (and was more affordable), so I booked an appointment online a few days in advance. The website noted that women are welcome in the shop, too - they just specialize in masculine cuts. Semecka was incredible!! I've only just recently cut my hair short, so I'm still getting all the short hair terminology down and figuring out my preferences. Semecka listened to my rambling thoughts regarding what I liked and disliked about my existing cut, and checked in with me throughout the cut to make sure the length and feel was what I wanted. The end result was *exactly* what I was looking for. I'll absolutely be returning to HIS Grooming and Semecka. read more

Great location, superb service, and high quality grooming experience where I felt like a VIP! Would def go back over and over again

Easily one of the best hair experiences that I have experienced and absolutely worth the price. Patient, low key, thoughtful and relaxing. No faux hipster vibes or ten different color jobs happening around you. No forced idle conversation about your next extravagant vacation or the fancy colleges to which your kids are applying. A cool and authentic atmosphere.... read more

This place does hair really well. I found this place on Yelp after what seemed like ages of running around DC trying places out. This was my second time back. Alicia was super nice, understood what I was going for even though my instructions were vague, plus they do shampoo and a eucalyptus hot towel around your face that's super relaxing. The owner Jared and I talked too and he thanked me for posting pics on Yelp. Since this is my second time coming in and first under the new digs, I have to say the new place rocks. Two stories, plus free coffee/beverages (not many others do that) with great front desk person who makes sure that you're taken care of. found my dc haircut place after months of searching. read more

HIS is a truly refined establishment that I'm happy to call my local barber shop! After moving into D.C. from Alexandria, I began my hunt for a barber shop. I wasn't seeking luxury, but mainly an excellent (not just "good"--I don't have time for crooked edge ups or uneven sideburns) haircut close to my place. After trying every other potential barber shop on Yelp, I came to HIS Grooming Lounge. The first thing you'll notice is their website. It is laid out well and offers online appointment creation and cancelation. YES! Online appointment capability is a requirement for me because of my schedule, so this was a huge plus. When I went to the shop itself, I was immediately greeted and Ashley (who is awesome) took my coat, got me some tea, and made me feel right at home. Rick, my barber, may have fewer appointments than the other barbers but don't sleep on him--great guy, great barber. You're able to have good and engaging conversation here, and everyone just seems happy to be here. Yes, their prices are higher than other places. But you kind of get what you pay for. If you're looking to try out HIS but don't want to stomach the $50 for a full haircut, go for a $25 trim. You won't regret it! Oh, and the shop is close to the Potomac Avenue Metro, and is only a short bike ride from my apartment. Summary: All you do is win, win, win at HIS! read more

Messed up my hair, went here because my usual barber is out of town, came in with some hope because of the reviews, but after all is said and done-- got a rush job and a line up that I did not ask for. On top of that, she ruined my hairline, I don't know why she thinks my hairline started on the right side of my head. Hairline uneven. Sideburns uneven. Uneven trim in some parts. Don't plan on going back. Definitely not worth the money ($50+). read more

Back in DC again this weekend, and after such a great experience last February, I timed my latest haircut to coincide with my travel. This experience was every bit as good as the first! The staff is top notch outstanding with friendly welcoming service that makes you feel right at home. The hot towel treatment is the best, and the haircut and beard trim were spot on. These guys have it going on, and this is THE place in DC to treat yourself to 45 minutes of me time that results in a great look when you leave the shop. I will definitely be back next time I'm in DC! read more

This place is legit. I looked around at other places, but they were either booked too far out or their system for scheduling appointments was confusing. Service at HIS Grooming was easy to book via their website. They were pretty full, but I happened to find one slot the next morning, which I booked. Their setup is pretty classy, let classic. I felt like I was in a man-cave salon meets old-school barbershop. Upon entering, you're met with a friendly gentleman who offers you a beverage (tea or water, if I recall correctly). This staff person also helps with payment after your cut, which is more efficient than the barber handling the transaction. They have a swipe machine for payment, which made everything clean and comfortable. The service was solid. I got a beard trim, which was reasonably priced. The barber did a great job. He was a little rough around the jugular, but otherwise I don't have any complaints. His skills were apparent, his demeanor professional, and his courtesy far exceeded the service I'm used to in the District. And the hair care products used can be purchased there on site. I'd highly recommend HIS Grooming to anyone in DC who wants to avoid the crowds in NW or the trek to NE. read more

This Men's Salon is an absolute treat. The location is awesome and within walking distance of the metro and eateries. The atmosphere is very relaxing, and professional, with great music, hair cuts, products, and refreshments. Although my friend recieved the services, I was generously waited on by the concierge as I waited. I would recommend all of the barbers. This is not your average shop! A+ read more

Thoroughly impressed with Jarred and the operation at HIS. I just moved to Capitol Hill, and I worried about finding a local barber and stylist. HIS is the quintessential place for a great cut. When you first walk in, you feel treated like a valued customer. Maritza at the front desk is courteous and did a fine job getting everything going with a wash and warm face towel. Eventually Jarred took over and gave me a solid haircut. Bonus points for Jarred because a nearby salon experienced a fire. He allowed one of the clientele from the neighboring salon to finish her treatment in the HIS facility. Class act for a classy place! read more

Justice has been taking care of me since I came across this shop almost 2 years ago. He's an amazing barber and gets it right every time I'm there. Some details about the shop: -You are greeted you with your choice of water, red wine, tea while you wait for the chair. They also recently added staff to shampoo and condition your hair while you wait. -Lots of old school music R&B for your enjoyment. -Crew hair products of all types for you to purchase. Since I began with Justice, I've gone from having short hair to growing it out over the last year. Aside from giving great cuts, he gives advice on how to moisturize and maintain my hair between cuts. I have the benefit of a standing appointment every two weeks that works perfect for my work schedule. If you need a great barber in DC, you should definitely ask for Justice. read more

Customer of 5+ years. Could not make my appointment as my child did not have daycare for the day. I stopped by earlier to see if they could fit me in. I waited as long as I could but had to leave. Refused to waive it. read more

HIS is an experience. I've been getting my hair cut for years with diminishing returns, so to speak. That said, I never thought of a haircut as more than a means to an end or just another errand. That attitude changed once I started going to HIS. Jared and Logan have been taking care of this head for a little while now and each visit is better than the last. The guys are personable, professional and skilled at what they do. My haircuts are stylish and due to their consult, my hair hasn't looked this thick/full in nearly 10 years. Also, the hot towels, drinks, and general laid back atmosphere make it a place I look forward to visiting. read more

I just moved to DC from NY. I had a solid barber near my place in NY who always provided an awesome cut. I knew it would be a pain in the a** trying to find a new barber here in DC who would "get it". If you're looking for a new barber shop with relaxed atmosphere, catchy and classic music, and a barber who will get you ready for whoever you need to impress, the search ends here. Logan was friendly, professional and had an awesome personality. He took time to work on the details of my style and got it just right. I also noticed a little bar area with hot apple cider as well as other drinks options. Will definitely be returning! Thanks again guys! read more

Very, very happy with the cut Jared gave me. He's a damn good barber - technically on point, listens to what you want, and has suggestions to make it even better. Shop vibe is cool and everyone there is friendly and a professional. Glad I found this place after languishing in the $20 or less super cuts wasteland that is the DMV. read more

For more than two years since I discovered HIS Grooming in the Capitol Hill area, they have offered an unparalleled, undeviating experience in grooming and customer service--each and every time. Even after moving away from the area I continue to return regularly because of the great care Justice takes in ensuring you leave with precisely what you desire. He's meticulous, dependable, and serves with understanding, purpose, and integrity. I really couldn't ask for more. Thank you to Jared for implanting a top-notch grooming business here in D.C. It's incredibly rare to find the marriage of great service and a high-quality haircut in one place! read more

The space is beautiful and feels very homey in the Capital Hill neighborhood. It was very easy to make an appointment online and the staff were all very welcoming. My appointment was set for 10:50 - 11:40pm and thought this would be enough time for me to get to a meeting across town at 12:30pm. I arrived right at 10:50pm and my hair stylist was still with his client and I ended up waiting for a good 15+ minutes. It seems like these haircuts usually take at least 60 minutes so perhaps they should start blocking off one hour appointments rather than 50 minutes so that clients can better plan their day and expect to finish up closer to the scheduled end time. I wasn't offered a drink until about 10 minutes after arriving since the receptionist person wasn't there when I arrived and I had to ask if there was anywhere I could put my stuff. When I pay $50 for a haircut, I guess I expect a little more service.. It seems like others have had great experiences with great customer service so maybe it was just today. But, I will say the shampoo and and face towel was very relaxing and well worth it; however, I wish the shampooing would happen after the haircut because you end up leaving with little bits of hair falling off throughout the day, which isn't ideal. Overall, enjoyed my experience and think this place as so much more potential. Just need to focus on some details and I think this place would be my go to place! read more

This place has the be the best haircut I have ever received, I am usually skeptical of such a high rated place. However, upon entering and receiving a star treatment from Ameen I was sold. The haircut was above and beyond he took his time and we had a great conversation. I look forward to coming here a couple more times before I leave DC. I want to thank Mike for taking me in on short notice. Hands down the best haircut I've ever had. The guys at the shop know exactly what they're doing. I'll definitely be back, thanks again! read more

These are nice guys with a classy establishment, but that's the minimum requirement for a haircut this pricey. I'm new to the neighborhood and was hoping to transition smoothly to a new barber after frequenting Hell's Bottom and Wise Owl Club in NW. I credit HIS for taking reservations, which isn't the case for Wise Owl. After visiting a few times that were largely satisfactory, my latest visit went poorly. I wasn't wholly comfortable with my cut but was willing to take the barber's (who I will not name) suggestion to ride with it. About two weeks later, my original suspicions were confirmed, and I called to see what could be done. They hesitantly made some time for a "clean up" appointment that day. To their credit, I believe they kept the shop open to accommodate my schedule. However, I was disappointed that they charged me a nominal fee for a ~10min visit, given that they were resolving an unmet need from my original haircut. I would be more comfortable recommending HIS were it not for the premium pricing. I don't blame the barber who gave me a haircut that slightly missed the mark. I expected a better commitment to keeping a repeat customer happy. read more

I've been with HIS Grooming every since it's inception. Jared was my barber at another shop several years ago, then he ventured out on his own to create and establish HIS Grooming. Like most men, I am loyal to a barber who cuts and styles my hair with a high level of consistency. Jared is that barber for me. So, it was an easy decision to stick with him and support his new journey in opening his own shop. HIS Grooming is a safe, clean, and comfortable hair care salon for men. The Pennsylvania Ave location is easily accessible even for those of us outside of DC. I typically find street parking within the block where the shop is located. The barbers/stylists at HIS Grooming are all professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Each takes pride in their craft and are committed to providing the best service possible. While they do take walk-ins, it's much better to have an appointment. I'm glad to have a regularly scheduled standing appointment that fits perfectly into my schedule. They always send a reminder of my appointment at least 3 days beforehand. I certainly recommend HIS Grooming. read more

Such a negative experience. I called on 12/31 to see about a haircut. They were full. Totally understand. I scheduled an appointment for the next weekend. Now on the Friday night before they cancel on me and just send me an email. Not a we will find you a time here is what works. No phone call. Just an email. I called the shop and was sent to voicemail. I'm sorry that is totally not cool. I guess they really do not want my business. Update. Shop now has spent 20 minutes in emails telling me how I'm wrong. So instead of trying to help they are arguing with me. If they had put that much effort into trying to rebook me in the first place this review would not exist read more

Mid 30s attorney with a lifetime of conservative cuts walks in for a trim with loose instructions to look a bit more modern. Gets presented with a beer. Proceeds upstairs to get the freshest cut of his life. Amin was a craftsman who took all of the allotted time to have to me looking fresh and confident. I highly recommend this place. Good prices to boot. Fun to hang on one occasion and willing to bet it'll be the same when I go back again read more

For years, I had never flown first-class. I would sometimes look at the prices for first class tickets and think "Who pays that much for a little leg room?" Then, on my first trip to Europe, I was bumped up from economy to first. I was led upstairs to a special section where, instead of cramped seats, there were pods that fully reclined. I was greeted with a sincere smile, a hot towel, and a menu of gourmet offerings. My glass of bourbon was never empty for more than a few moments, as the attendants were eager to ensure my every need was met. And long before I reached my destination, I got it. The difference between HIS grooming lounge and a traditional barber shop is akin to the difference between first class and coach. I wanted to look my best for a recent wedding, and went in for a head shave and beard trim. Was greeted by the friendly receptionist/cashier; she took my bag, led me to an exceedingly comfortable leather chair, and offered a beverage. I sipped my beverage, watched ESPN, and listened to the exceptional jazz playlist while Jared finished up with his client. When I got in the barber chair, I learned firsthand why Jared always gets such great reviews. He gave me a step-by-step breakdown of what he intended to do, the products he intended to use, and why he chose them. He asked specific questions about my scalp and suggested things that I could do to improve my home-shave experience. He then proceeded to give me the full hot oil, hot lather, hot towel, straight blade treatment. He took his time to get each and every follicle that had ever thought of growing on my head. It was the closest shave I'd ever had. When he was done, he trimmed my beard, then used the straight razor to really lock in the line. I walked out looking and feeling great. Is HIS a little more expensive than regular barbershops? Sure. But in the same way that Shake Shack is more expensive than McD's, Chipotle is more expensive than Taco Bell, and Chik-fil-a is more expensive than Arby's (I must be hungry), you're paying for a vastly superior product. As of this writing, every review of this place has been 5 stars. That's not an accident. When I went online to make my next appointment, Jared was booked solid for the next three weeks. That's not an accident either. Treat yo' self and make an appointment today! read more

Keeping it simple.... Though I was hesitant to use anyone but Logan per the reviews, I was happy to have Rick be my barber. We talked about current events, but it wasn't forced. He LISTENED to me regarding what I wanted done after telling him that a lot of barbers back in DC could not get my fade how my barber in TX did and that my psoriasis prevents me from using just any shampoo. Co-wash people!!!! Hot towel treatment was great and the polish was really nice. Very personable staff gave my fiancée' a drink while she waited for me. Price is great for what you get. Room to grow: Explain what you're using when you're using it. You guys sell the same products that you use. That could immensely grow your merchandise sales. Try it on me the next time I come in. Overall, great experience. Forget the "keeping things a secret," hipster crap. Support your "local" businesses!!! read more

Bottom line: this is the place to go for men's haircuts in Cap Hill. After multiple attempts to get a decent haircut for less than $60, I saw that HIS Grooming Lounge was close by with good prices, so I gave it a shot - and how glad I am that I did. Firstly, while they're sometimes able to accept walk-ins, your best bet is to call and make an appointment. When you arrive there are refreshments waiting for you, as well as sports on the big screen TV, which is playing at a moderate level. My barber, Jared, was very attentive and meticulous even though I was getting what would be considered an easier haircut. The time was well spent, resulting in a far superior cut than any I'd had in DC. read more

***Summary*** Stylist: Jared. Excellent craftsmanship. Great customer service. Quality barbershop. Expensive, but worth it. Highly recommend for anyone who is looking to achieve a particular style and requires an experienced and skilled barber. ___________________________ My first visit to HIS grooming was nothing short of superb. After I walked into the barbershop I was greeted by the receptionist, Nicole, and was kindly asked if I wanted water or coffee. Although I had an appointment I had to wait about 15 - 20 minutes. But, as many others have previously mentioned, the TV in the barbershop was set to ESPN to occupy the time. As I was waiting I took a moment to survey the shop; it was relatively clean and well kept, and the decor sets an ambiance that makes you feel like you're in a quality barbershop. Before long I was greeted by Jared; he was very professional and personable. I am very particular about my hair and know exactly what I am looking for in a cut. I explained to Jared the length and style I wanted and he worked with me every step of the way. He talked me through what he was doing and his approach so that I felt comfortable with the cut. Needless to say I was very satisfied with the end result and will be returning for my next cut. HIS Grooming can accommodate the basic needs for anyone who is just looking for a good haircut without regret, but if you are someone who is looking for something more advanced I highly recommend this barbershop. I can only speak for Jared, but he understood when I was asking about different types of common styles (disconnected undercut, side-swept quiff, pompadour, etc.) and how to achieve those styles. If you are very particular about your hair and require a barber who will listen or are looking to attempt a new trendy style then this is the place for you. Some final points: the haircut is on the expensive end, $50 + tip. But it is worth the price if you are looking for something with more precision and skill than a basic all-around trim. The experience also provides shampoo and conditioner, as well as a hot towel. Lastly, be sure to book your appointment in advance. The receptionist politely informed me that Jared's schedule is constantly booked because he has many returning clients. read more

HIS Grooming continues to improve, particularly the drink selections and the hours. Switching to the booking system was a win as well - it is very easy to book appointments. HIS Grooming Lounge is a neighborhood barbershop with a touch of class! I always look forward to my visits and know that I'm going to get the best service possible. A cut and shampoo (along with hot towel and beard trim, the standard package) run $40. Decent price for DC and cheap for the quality of the haircut. This is not a quick chop job, but a detailed haircut that's worth the money. Pro Tip: Schedule Jared. All the barbers are great, but Jared goes above and beyond. read more

After having used a barber in Adams Morgan for a few years I decided it was time for a switch. HIS was great. Ashley at the front desk was super friendly and immediately offered a fresh cup of coffee. I had made a reservation online with Jared, the owner, who immediately knew it was my first time there and talked through how he prefers to cut (including wash, hot towel, etc.). Cut came out great -- fade, lines, and some advice on product to use and how best to style. Hands down the best barber in SE/Capitol Hill area. While I can't speak for anyone other than Jared, other reviews suggest the whole team is on point. update: some other barbers here could use a bit more focus on cleaning up the lines, but still a good cut. read more

Look, I was only going to go with four stars, but Jared and Logan have an excellent shop and lot of people seem to agree. I didn't want to be the one to burst their bubble. When I got off the Metro and the shop was a bit further from the Metro than I expected (five minute walk), I admit to being skeptical. But once you walk in it's got a really cool vibe. It's barber shop meets upscale hipster. Jared -- who had actually left me voicemail while I was on the metro to let me know Logan was running a little behind schedule if I wanted to take my time or reschedule (is there anybody else who does that??) -- greeted me warmly, took my things, and set me up with a drink. So yes, the name "lounge" is fully warranted. I cut my haircut with Logan who did a really nice job. Not the best hair cut I've ever gotten style-wise, but he was kind, professional, attentive, and most importantly, didn't overdo it. Sometimes the first time you see a guy they get carried away and hack it all off with the buzzer. Not the case for Logan. Very deliberate. They'll chat if you want to, let you watch the TV if you want to, or just go about their business if you want them to. So yea, the atmosphere is cool, the service is excellent, the rate is well within reason, the location is fine, and the hair cut is solid. Sure I'm not the biggest fan of it taking 45 minutes, but I'll go back . . . especially for the warm towel they put over your face after the shampoo -- one of the most relaxing things you'll ever do. read more
