When I walked in the door, the attentive receptionist offered a choice of water, coffee or soda and told Mike that I was here; I waited only a minute past my appointment time and was greeted warmly even though it was my first interaction with the barber. Overall first impressions were great.
The place is clean, recently renovated with hand painted tiles from Mexico and overall evokes a feeling of a classic barber shop with modern fixtures and lighting. There's the nod to old times with the antique barber chairs used for the close shave but the rest of the place is done in a warm, modern fashion.
I like this kind of style over a previous reviewer's preference to have a place that would "men up" "serve beer" "have sports illustrated" or "espn on tv". I've had enough of those sorts of bro salons that want to make you feel like you've walked into a frat house and can just feel the testosterone oozing from all the pores of the walls. If those fixtures define your expectations of a high end barber shop for men, then look elsewhere because this place doesn't keep on stereotyping men.
Moreover, even if the place offered you beer and had stereotypical men offerings, it still wouldn't be worth justifying the relatively higher price of $60 - 75 for a haircut, so why do I feel that this place is worth it?
Firstly, the communication between the barber and myself was the best I've ever had; he listened to what I liked and usually preferred but then communicated to me why his own experiences and opinions were better suited to me. I honestly prefer a barber to have the skill to look at me and based on his own skills, experiences and work to create a style that would best make me look good. Mike did this to perfection and I didn't have to go through the haircut with fear that I have sometimes had in other places.
Secondly, the entire experience was professionally and competently done. I received an excellent haircut complete with actual step-by-step on how to use product in my hair easily. I usually expect the barber to just toss something in without any explanation but the experience here was quite different. Mike clearly, consistently and concisely explained how to make the best use of a product suited to me in three simple steps. I did it this morning and looked great.
Lastly, this place builds a strong community by solving the only valid point in the previous reviewer's criticism that "men's hair cuts are a fairly often required necessity." Mike does this by offering free clean-ups of the back and side hair lines instead of charging for the full cut. While the shampooing is not included in the clean-ups, this fantastic offer to maintain the cut you received previously is a key reason in my justifying the cost.
In essence, I pay for the cut I received now and get free maintenance later on when I'm in the middle stage of looking a little bit shaggy but can't really justify a full cut. The high cost of the cut is an investment that provides ample return of the maintenance. Of all the places I have been to before, no place has recognized and provided a solution to men often needing haircuts. This alone shows that unlike places full of sports and beer or other high end barber shops, the Barber of Hell's Bottom is a place that is for men alone and understands men completely. read more
