I also explained that I have been a loyal client who has previously flown out of state to see my longtime stylist, but I was hoping to find someone local. I never received a response to my message, so I called. The person that answer confirmed the owner had received message and told me a person outside their salon would be a "better fit." I reached out to that person as well and received no response. Message received. The whole experience was disappointing and honestly painful. Looking for a new stylist as a queer/trans person already comes with a lot of anxiety around whether a space will actually be safe and welcoming. Sadly, this interactions let me know that my concerns were real. I can't speak to their intentions, but I can speak to the impact: I did not feel welcomed, wanted, or safe as a prospective LGBTQ client. I wish businesses could be more direct about who they aren't prepared to serve, because being quietly redirected elsewhere after explicitly asking for a queer/trans-friendly space feels awful.

Disappointing Experience with Emily Vanhuss at salon Locale I visited on January 21st, 2025, to get my hair done for my 56th birthday celebration the next day. It was a very special occasion for me, and I wanted everything to be perfect. Unfortunately, my experience at the salon was far from satisfactory. I had a full head of long hair and was very particular about how I wanted my bangs to be cut. I specifically requested that my bangs be cut conservatively, with the understanding that they would be trimmed longer initially and then adjusted if needed. My hair master, Emily Vanhuss, assured me that she would "be safe" with the cut. To my dismay, within the next five minutes, I saw my bangs cut extremely short, to a length of just 1.5-2 inches. After drying, my bangs stood up like porcupine needles. Emily turned my back to the mirror and commented on how nice the back looked, completely ignoring the disaster at the front. I left the salon in tears. Additionally, Emily used a technique involving a knife to thin out my hair, resulting in uneven, chopped pieces rather than layers. This has left me with a hairstyle that is difficult to manage and will take up to a year to grow out and fix. Every day, I spend a significant amount of time ironing my hair and straightening my bangs just to look presentable. I usually refrain from writing negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience due to the unprofessional attitude and the poor quality of service I received, especially considering I paid $120 for this. I hope this review helps others in making an informed decision about their choice of hairstylist. read more

Totally obsessed with my experience at this incredible beachside salon! I felt welcomed and pampered by the amazing team, Heather and Coco. Both of them are total pros and so down-to-earth. The space itself is beautiful--light-filled, beachy, and clearly curated with care. A lot of the decor feels personal or handmade, and she showcases artwork, jewelry, and crafts from local artists. You can tell she genuinely cares about supporting her community. There are even framed prints of her sister's stunning beach photography, which adds such a special touch. There's also a cozy patio with comfortable seating and a big umbrella where you can relax--I even caught a monarch butterfly drifting along Mariposa Street while I was there, which somehow perfectly matched the vibe. Inside, the natural light, music, and overall atmosphere create a full sensory experience. Between the calming playlists, the scent of the products, and the aesthetic of the space, it's incredibly easy to just sink in and relax. And then there's Mari herself. She has this rare ability to understand exactly what you want--even if you can't quite articulate it. I tend to describe things with vague phrases and hand gestures, and she somehow translates that into results that exceed my expectations every time. She remembers your hair, your preferences, and even what's going on in your life, which makes you feel genuinely cared for. She also meets you exactly where you are energy-wise. Whether you want to chat or just zone out (I'm definitely the "touch my scalp and I'm in a sleepy trance" type), she intuitively adjusts. Somehow, even when we do talk, it feels energizing rather than draining. On top of that, her technique is incredible--having her dry your hair is honestly so relaxing it feels (and looks!) like someone gently playing the harp. I first fell in love with Mari's work at her previous salon, and when she opened her own space nearby, following her was an easy decision. She's created something really special--an environment where you feel comfortable, understood, and taken care of from start to finish. Everyone who walks in seems genuinely happy to be there, and that says a lot. Also, the playlists? Perfect every time. I always leave wanting to recreate them at home. It has been the best haircut I've had in the past three years. Since losing contact with my hairstylist three years ago, the haircuts I've had turned out to be mostly okay but nothing like I wanted. Today was the first time in a long time that I was satisfied and felt it was worth it (though it wasn't all that much, it's about how much all the other trendy salons charge for women). Brad was my stylist and my appointment was at 9:00 am. I know, ridiculous of me, but I had a day full of errands. I came in a few minutes early but Brad was already in and preparing for me. He truly listened to what I wanted and definitely got my idea. I didn't even had to show him a picture of what I wanted and I came prepared with a handful of pictures. He also asked if he could cut a few inches off my waist length hair, which was nice because I had someone cut 6 inches off without asking me first. He explained that cutting off the two or three inches off will help shape the haircut I wanted and I easily went with it because what he suggested was reasonable. I thought why not, it's summer and my long hair is driving me insane with its heat retaining properties (I kid you not!) and it's been getting tangled a lot lately. Brad was very personable and tolerated my chatty mouth so early in the morning. I normally don't talk that much during the day but I haven't had coffee yet and I was still half asleep. It was just me and him for a while until one of the other employees came in. My fiancee originally referred me to Brad for haircuts. He found this salon through yelp and gave it a shot about two weeks ago. My fiancee loves his haircut and I know he'd bug the crap out of me if I don't go to the same hairstylist. My fiancee and Brad definitely hit it off. My fiancee also said that Brad and the other hairstylists only come in when they have appointments set up. Otherwise, they wouldn't come in. So make sure to make an appointment instead of just walking in. My fiancee said it was just him and Brad as well on a weeknight. The place was clean, trendy looking, and I liked that it wasn't crowded although I thought it was a little stuffy in there (could be better if they turned on the AC). Overall, I would recommend this place, Brad specifically, because both my fiancee and I definitely will be coming back. I have finally found a hairstylist to go for the first time in three years!
