I've been going to Salon Jam in its various incarnations for over twenty-five years. John hasn't been there during that whole time, but had been a stylist with the salon he had taken over. Salon Jam has been a great Old Town Takoma business, a standard by which others should measure. Super- friendly stylists, totally on-time, they take you the minute you walk in for your timed appointment, exceptional punctuality. Fun shop to visit because it is cleverly- designed, hip without being overdone---like the guy who did both design and the work itself---uhhhhhh John!! Hey, it's just another way of "being a stylist", isn't it?
The haircut I get is good and reasonably priced. It's not a shop where I'd go for color, I'm sure they'd be just fine-- but for me-- I want a color specialist (something about this age group). If someone wanted a punk, fun-color, purple, black, or streaks, I'd suggest Salon Jam-- they'd know how to do it. In fairness, to the woman who posted here, we gotta know---the term "updo" is not specific. There are high-end shops which can produce something classic and formal. We know this. We also know that the high-end shops are in Georgetown or 16th and K, or
David's Beautiful People---those places specialize in bridal party hairstyles. If I wanted something called an updo, I would give it a trial run with a chosen stylist. You wouldn't dash in to a doctor's office expecting a good result, or dash into a restaurant with high expectations for food fit "for a ball", without a trial run. Think of it-- if you needed a style for a professional photograph or something on that scale, would you actually expect to luck- out with a stylist you have only just met, whom you have given non-specific instructions? Have you never heard someone in another chair say to the stylist: "don't cut it, I just want a trim...." Uh-huh, like a trim is anything but a cut? Salon Jam is sprightly, friendly, fun. The stylists are punctual without making you feel rushed, they're friendly and attentive. The location is walkable or street-parkable-- its a jewel in Takoma Park. John could well be downtown or in a major mall someplace, he knows it, anybody who knows him, knows it. Part of being a consummate business owner is to be able to say----maybe later/maybe never. Try Salon Jam. If you want something high-end, those places are not hard to find, but be prepared for style-snobs with prices to match the address---and-- it still might be luck- of -the- draw results. But, many would agree, it is all in the communication, we have to be prepared to say what we want and be sure we are understood. Not liking something that you went in for "last-minute" is pretty much one's own Up-DOing. If you want a haircut at a reasonable price with friendly, fast, fun people,
