I received roundabout answers and had to ask three separate times before finally being told I would be charged $417, the price of my original, much more extensive service. I left without receiving any service and was charged $417. But the most upsetting part was how unkind the experience was. I work a demanding job in DC and was trying to handle the situation responsibly. I called ahead, explained what happened, asked what I should do, and followed their direction to come in. Anyone working in this city knows that meetings run over. I was not asking them to ignore their policies. I was asking for basic communication and consideration. Instead, I felt like I had to repeatedly push just to get a straight answer about what I was being charged. That lack of transparency, and especially the lack of kindness, was incredibly disappointing. There are plenty of professional, transparent, and genuinely considerate salons in DC. I will be going elsewhere.

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

While the receptionist eventually scheduled me with a different stylist for two weeks later, I subsequently received an email stating they would not provide me with any service at all. Please DO NOT visit this salon unless you want to experience blatant discrimination.

Salon Gerard is simply excellent, a DC gem. The comfortable atmosphere of this small salon, enhanced by terrific music played at a volume that you can easily converse over, makes an appointment here pure pleasure. I am a middle aged woman but I have seen male and female clients of all ages here. Gerard has been my stylist for 1 1/2 years. I have had keratin treatments, color, cuts, blowouts, and have been completely satisfied with everything. Gerard not only listens well to his clients but has vast experience, knowledge and gives thoughtful advice, so his recommendations can be fully trusted. He pays careful attention to detail and I never feel hurried. Gerard is an easy going great guy and a real gentleman. I highly recommend him as a stylist. Mary, the other stylist, also works as carefully and thoughtfully with her clients. I have only had blow outs from her but would have no hesitation in recommending her as a stylist to anyone. She too is warm and genuine. Hardly a week goes by that I don't get compliments on my hair cut, color or just on having great hair; and quite often these comments are from strangers! Salon Gerard is fantastic! Rachel has been doing my hair for 5 years and she's unbelievably talented. When I ask her to give me a specific style (or just suggest an idea I e been mulling over) she exceeds my expectations every time. I've come to trust her so much I usually just ask her if she has anything she wants to try on me, and I've never been disappointed with the outcome. It's always perfect, and perfectly suited to my style. She is so talented, kind, and you can tell she just loves being a stylist. She is a consummate professional, willing to do anything and everything to ensure I and other clients leave happy. The entire salon staff is terrific. The owner is extremely professional, very warm and welcoming, and it's clear he cares about every client in there, whether he's the stylist or not. I have lived in the District for about 6 years and have been struggling to find a hair stylist that listened to me and knew how to work with my natural hair (I am bi-racial). I would go to hair salons asking for my hair to be cut, styled, and blow-dried, and leave with shorter hair that had no shape and looked horrible after I washed it. I am so happy that Mary did my hair! She was so patient and professional with me as I shared my concerns and told her how I wanted my hair to look at the end both straightened and curly. It was mesmerizing to watch her work and to see how much care she took to make sure that I liked the end product. gerard is excellent at what he does. for most of my life i have been a person who never cut or did anything with their hair and when i had waist length hair and wanted a unique asymmetrical short haircut he's the only one i would trust with the job. i recently went in for a cut and color, and by color i mean copper red and it turned out great. the cut was precise and polished and suited my face shape perfectly. gerard has many years of top notch cutting and it shows. i have had my hair cut by him at the previous salons and will continue to have my hair cut by him at his own salon. he is not only good at what he does but it truly passionate about it. read more

I just had my first hair appointment at Salon Gerard and loved it! Rachel Peick was my hair stylist and she did an outstanding job. She was extremely professional and efficient, while still making great conversation and keeping the environment comfortable and fun. Mary DuBois is a fantastic stylist that conquered the feat of transitioning a blonde away from her trusty highlights and into a darker shade. I was nervous to say the least, but with the amount of time she spent and attention to detail, how much she really cared was apparent in the end result. The owner, Gerard himself, was friendly and laid back the entire time I was there and really made the visit special as if I was not just some other client. Before leaving the salon, I was given aftercare instructions, which I followed exactly. After washing my hair for the first time using the shampoo I was instructed to use, the color turned orange instead of the caramel tone we had discussed with no sign of keratin. I contacted Kate about the problem, and she agreed that I should come back for a corrective appointment. Unfortunately, the corrective appointment made my hair significantly worse rather than fixing it. Afterward, my hair had multiple uneven shades, patchy highlights, excessive breakage, and became extremely dry, brittle, and overprocessed. My scalp also became irritated after the chemical services. The attached photos show the condition of my hair after these appointments. My hair was also left feeling fried and damaged instead of smooth and healthy. After the unsuccessful correction, I continued trying to resolve the issue directly with the salon. Kate ultimately issued only a partial refund after multiple discussions, leaving me responsible for hundreds of dollars despite the failed services and the condition of my hair. A corrective appointment and a partial refund would not have occurred if there had been no issue to address. The owner has publicly disputed my experience. I stand by this review. I have photographs documenting the results after my appointments, along with records of the corrective appointment, our communications, and the partial refund. I trusted this salon with my hair, and I am now dealing with damage that will take months to grow out and repair. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Tilila Hair Design.
