In the small window of time that salons were allowed to reopen in our county, back in late June, I had the privilege of getting my hair cut. I was over my COVID hair and, most importantly, I wanted my bangs back. They had all the appropriate health and safety practices in place. Texting from my car upon arrival, air high fives, forehead temperature checks for both of us before entering the salon, only the two of us there and we were masked the entire time, hand sanitizer, and everything was cleaned along the way. I've been coming here for two years now, and I have no complaints. My girlfriend introduced me to Bruce and he's the man! well besides Danny who's awesome as well. Let's see everyone is very pleasant and every time I come to get my hair did, I always leave with a smile on my face. I never find myself bored there because Bruce cracks me up! When my girlfriend got her hair fried by another so called "pro hair stylist" from doing a fashion color, the hairstylist didn't tell her how damaged her hair well be. As soon as she was done with her hair, she said that my girlfriend's hair looked pretty and it is the rose gold she wanted. Long story short, my girlfriend wanted her whole head to be rose gold, and not to be a rose ombre. The so called "pro hair stylist" over-processed her hair and didn't even tell my girlfriend. The whole night (not more than 24 hours), my girlfriend freaked out about how she was sheading hair like a dog and I notice her hair didn't feel right; it felt like gummy. Each time she tried to comb through her hair; it kept breaking. She thought she was going bald; so she woke me up to tell me that she was going bald. It was all bad because I lacked sleep and overworked earlier that day. I researched for my girlfriend at 2am to find out what was wrong, but we couldn't do anything because of the time. I advised my girlfriend to hurry and messaged Petra (because she has done an awesome job before), asking if she could please squeeze her in for a haircut or treatment as soon as possible. Petra quickly responded the next day by 8 am, saying she could squeeze her in at 10:30 am. (between appointments) As I got there, she told her that her hair wasn't as bad as she thought it would be; but she would be needing to cut off a decent amount of hair. She worked her magic and gave an amazing layered cut and styled it up afterwards. My girlfriend says it feels a lot more healthier now and not as gummy as before!! I waited about a month to write this review, mainly because I wanted to make sure that the reaction I had wasn't a snap judgment. It took awhile for me to gather this opinion from friends, co-workers and family, but here goes the final cut. I went to Salon Epiffani because I wanted to see a change in my overall appearance. I have long fluffy dark hair (I'm half Filipina, half Samoan) and I have always worn it mid-back length. For this reason, I cautioned the stylist that it's really hard to make my hair look "different" in a major way because I have short layers in front, long layers in the back. My appointment was for a cut and color. Part of the change I wanted to see was a change in color so I specified "auburn." When the stylist pulled out her color palette with hair samples, she pointed to a color that looked almost exactly like my own. When I pointed to the shade lighter, she warned that as a base tone I'd want to stay darker. A base color? I wasn't planning on highlights. She didn't seem to understand this, so she asked again: "Right, but you're going to get highlights eventually, right?" NO. I don't know if that's the norm around here, but I specifically did not want to look like one of those highlighted Forever 21 clones I see at the bars. I wanted to look professional - I'm 23 and I have a big-kid job now so it's time for me to move away from my college appearance. I now have a theory that an unrecognizable haircut is worse than a bad haircut. At the very least, with a bad hair cut you can go get it fixed by filing a complaint with a manager. In my case, I blew over $150 on a cut/color that not a SINGLE person in my life ever noticed. I had to ask for opinions when a week had passed because I realized that my usually perceptive co-workers (who can notice when I'm wearing new eyeshadow, literally) failed to say a word about my new and expensive hair failure. Here's the caveat - I realize that one phrase I said might have confused the stylist. I said "Well, I got to a lot of formal functions so I'd like it to be long enough to put curlers in." I realize now that this may have thrown off what she thought I wanted. Curlers and curling irons come in a lot of different sizes, so if she was thinking the big barrel curlers then I can understand how she'd be tentative to cut shorter. In any case, she took four inches off my hair and dyed my hair, but I think she could tell that I didn't look any different from when I came in. I'm disappointed and frustrated, but I also learned my lesson about being more explicit with what I want. Next time I go in for a hair makeover, I'm going in armed with magazine photos and hair samples if I have to. ;-P read more

This place has great ambiance, is clean, the guests and employees always seem to be in a good mood! I've been here three times for highlights and never walked out the door paying less than $175!!! Haven't been too satisfied with the results either. Not too sure the name of my stylist but the first time she told me my highlights worked so quickly, the next time she left me to chat in the back room and they came out almost bleach blonde. The one thing I told her is I do not like being a blonde and that's how I ended up every time. I've had long, long hippy dippy waist length hair for a long, long time. My nieces (who both see Aileen at Salon Epiffani), urged me to let it go, enter the 21st century and try something daring like (gasp) layers. I've always liked the way their hair looks, so I hesitantly decided to go for it. Needless to say, I am so glad I did. Aileen was warm, personable and quite knowledgeable. She listened to what I wanted, asked clarifying questions and then proceeded to give me the exact mid-back, layered cut I asked for. All the while she was easy going, fun to talk to and professional. Having had long hair most of my life, many people have commented on it (basically due to the fact that is was thick and quite long). After Aileen's gorgeous cut, I've received compliments about how my hair looks - healthy, full, great cut, etc... My previous hair stylist couldn't seem to figure out how to get the right color high lights I wanted. My hair is a little hard to work with because it's naturally black. So, I decided to try Salon Epiffani yesterday and I got Jenny. I told Jenny about my situation with my previous hair stylist and she really listened. She was able to make the right color come out of my hair. Another thing that Jenny did very well and uniquely was she cut my hair dry. I've never had my hair cut dry before but she told me that her reasoning for it is we usually wear our hair dry so it just makes sense to cut it dry so we know how the final finish would look. I'm giving them the thumbs UP. Christina, the only person I've worked with so far, had given me a highlight. They fitted me in the day before which was great. They also had a great promotion for first time clients. When I got home I felt strongly that the highlight was too dark. I called and Christina said I should come in so she could see how it looked and if more of a highlight would damage my hair. I came in, and she took the time to evaluate my hair as well as get opinions of other stylists, which I found to be professional. She had an open attitude and was willing to make it the way I wanted. She spent 2 hours with me, basically giving me another highlight around my crown. In the end she only charged me for the blow dry. Check out Christina. She is meticulous, takes pride in good work and isn't too heavy on conversation. (I've had cuts when I feel like they turn me into their therapist. But maybe it was me asking too many questions. Ok, so I am one of those East Bay dwellers who thought that I needed to trek all the way into San Francisco to get a good haircut. But one day, when I did not feel like making the trip, I looked on here to Yelp to find something local. Everyone has raved about this place, so I decided to check it out. What do I like about this place? Well, for one thing, I like that the staff is not so uber-cool and trendy that they look down their nose at you. They are very friendly and welcoming. And the talent pool is large AND deep; everyone that leaves this place goes out the door looking like a million bucks. My personal fave? Bruce. I followed Margie when she moved to this salon. It's my favorite of the salons she's worked in since I've been going to her. More about Margie later. This salon has a nice vibe -- beautiful, calm and chic. No "we're-too-cool-for-you" stuff you find in salons that confuse attitude with sophistication. The staff and owners are friendly and welcoming and the salon is always such a nice place to spend time. And, you can't beat the location -- there's a free parking lot across the street and Peet's within walking distance! I've been going to Margie for about seven years now. She nails my color -- which is a big stretch from my natural color and shade. I should mention here that we've changed the color over the years as my tastes have changed. She always hits it. And, she gives me great cuts. I have this curly/frizzy hair -- a challenge for most stylists. After moving to the east bay, I went through four stylists before a friend recommended her. I don't even know where to start with my experience at Salon Epiffani... I was tired of having short hair, so I decided to get extensions. I chose Salon Epiffani because I had heard of Nicholas and his work with extensions from back when he worked at the Maine Gallery... The hair that I paid $150 a packet for... wasn't even in the package when I got there. It was also a lot lighter than the color of my hair. After about the second week of having the hair in, it started to get really tangled and dry. So dry... that it felt like a rat's nest and I ended up wearing my hair up for the following week. I was told that the extensions should last for at least 2 months I called in to talk to one of the owners (Petra) and she was very apologetic and said she would talk with Nicholas. Nevertheless, I was re-booked with another appointment. When I went in, he tried to flat iron the extensions and tell me that they look okay. I was frustrated...and just told him to take them out. He said he would order me better hair, and put them back in for free. I left the salon feeling okay about the situation...and the fact that I was getting them redone at no charge was a relief since I had spent a good amount of money getting them put in in the first place. So I go to get them put back in... Why was the new hair out of the package again...and why was the hair curley...and why was he blowdrying the NEW hair like he had just washed it??? Mind you, my hair is not by any means curley. (I don't know why i didn't say anything before he put them back in...I guess I just didn't want to sound ungreatful that he was redoing my hair for free) Anyway, so he put them back in...flat ironed them... and wah-lah it looked fantastic...until.... I washed my hair. After i washed my hair...I suddenly realized that having curley extensions with not-so-curley hair just does not mesh. After a WEEK, yes, a WEEK! the hair started to get tangled and disgusting...and there I was...back to wearing my hair up. I got so frustrated that I had my friend go through my hair and cut all the string out so I could unsew my extensions. It was a freakin nightmare. I don't think Nicholas is in anyway bad at what he does... But I do feel that I was ripped off with the hair that he used. For $150 a packet, I should have gotten decent hair...and in my case, I'm guessing i just got ripped off. read more

When I moved from San Francisco to the east bay I knew I needed to find a new hair salon. From the outside this salon always looked appealing and I always said I was going to try it. I finally did 2 years ago and fell in love with the place and the people. Aileen has been doing my hair since and has also taken on my little sister as a customer. The atmosphere is bright, inviting and comfortable. From noshing on coffee and cookies and catching up with Hollywood magazines in the waiting area to being drawn into the gossip talk amongst the stylists, it appeals to anyone. The prices are excellent and the quality of their work exceeds it. I usually get a wash and cut (with layers) for $50, which is a steal!!! Every time I leave it looks like I had a $200 haircut. I often see people having their wedding or group parties getting their hair and make up done. I have also heard of stylists going to people's homes for these appointments as well. I would highly recommend Petra for your hair needs! When she did my bridal hair styles and make-up, she was able to answer all my questions. I was telling her how I wanted to do my hair a rose gold color in a couple weeks and she perked up and mention that Joico now has a colored spray that you can spray onto your hair to change up any hair color. Petra does natural make up that blends well with my face. She really knows her stuff and understands color and how that works on different features. I've always had a hard time doing my eyes, and had never had anyone do them the way that I have liked. I absolutely love Tami! I have known her for 5 years now and have been going to her for over 2 years consistently. I first met Tami through a mutual friend while visiting the Bay Area from LA. I first came here a little over a year ago, it was the day before Thanksgiving and my usual stylist canceled on me last minute. I frantically called every salon in town and no one could fit me in. I first spoke to Danny who was very pleasant but told me no one had openings. 3 minutes later he called me back saying one of their stylists, Nicole Picazzo had agreed to stay late and could do my hair as soon as I could get there. She recommended treatments and vitamins and worked her expertise and "magic" on my hair. She used the best products customizing a personal "recipe" for my ailing hair. By June, my hair was not falling as much, and it loked better overall. By July, my hair stopped falling completely and began to look fuller. She even gave me detailed information about the products she used because I would be going overseas for three months and she wanted to make sure that whoever did my hair abroad would not undermine or undo the healing she had obtained. I am not one to complain, but I walked out of this salon unhappy, actually so unhappy I needed to come back the next day to have the stylist fix the orange roots he left me with. I wasn't going to let this go, especially after what he charged me. The excuse he gave me was I had waited too long to have my roots touched up (about 3/4 of an inch) and I should come in every 5 weeks, otherwise I would be left with what he called a "band". (uneven shades) Are you kidding me? I thought this only occurred if you didn't have a professional do it. I could have colored it myself if I wanted those results. Needless to say, I will never go back. I found another salon just down the street that I'm incredibly happy with. I have mixed feelings about this place. I like the location and the vibe...low key but nice. Friendly front desk staff, nice people working there.... but here are my issues. I had a 1:30 appointment scheduled with Aileen. At 12:15 she calls and asks me if I can come in at 1pm. In 45 minutes.... no, I'm at work. How about 1:45 or 2 then? After going back and forth, we agreed on 2pm. I asked how long my appointment would take, she thought about 2 hours. I arrive at 1:55 for my 2pm appointment. They tell me she'll be right with me. At 2:20, she walks in the salon on her cell phone! She'd been out doing whatever and was late. She came over and said to me "Oh, so you made it?" What was that supposed to mean? No comment or apology for being late herself. We sat down and started discussing what I wanted. I shared what my last stylist did that I did not like, and what a previous stylist had done that I did like. She actually got kind of short with me almost making fun of the fact that I didn't know the right terms and such. Turns out, she wasn't really listening. I said I wanted partial high/low lights with an all around glaze/color in between. She rudely commented on how she said that before, which she hadn't. She talked about a toner, which I've never had and insisted that was what I meant...no it wasn't. So she starts my high or lo lights, whatever she was doing. She had me sit on the edge of the chair with my neck bent forward for over an hour! I've never had to do this to get my hair done. She ended up doing what I am pretty sure were full high/lo lights. I didn't ask for that. We're now going on over 2 hours in the chair! I let her know at 4pm (almost two hours later) that I had to leave by 5pm as I had to pick up my son. At that point she mentioned we might not be able to do my hair cut!! She finally rinses me and then applies a toner. Again, have no idea what that is for. I had to sit now in the hair washing chair with my neck on the hard tub for 10-15 minutes. She rinses my hair, and then offers to blow dry it so I "don't have to go day care all wet." Well, I wouldn't have to if you'd been on time and maybe not changed my appointment for personal business. Or, not done the full high/lo lights I didn't ask for. As she was drying it out she acknowledged that she did not get all of the greys and that she had seen them as she was parting my hair. She said she'd touch them up later. She quoted me a price for my hair cut and scheduled me for another appointment...no discount or apology for the lack of time to do it as planned. I did get a new client discount and in the end, the price was less than I expected, so that was a plus. Where I'm torn is that I love the color except of course the two major grey spots poking out at the front of my face! I called first thing this morning to talk to her to see about getting it all fixed and making sure we have time at my next appointment. No call back several hours later although I was told she would call me right back. And to think I gave her a good tip...mainly because I thought I'd be coming back for a hair cut...but now I don't think so....... I have to say, I think part of my issue was her attitute. I felt like I was being insulted or not taken seriously. Petra, one of the owners seemed very nice and even stepped in at one point to provide me with some pictures by which to discuss color options, as she could tell Aileen and I were not jiving. Anyway, I won't go back. I'm going to go pay someone else to do the cut I never got and fix my hairline. Be late, make a mistake on my hair, but please, be polite and apologetic and make an effort to make it worth my while to come back. read more

Thank you for your comment back, however, there are other salons just down the road that are much more personal and treat their clients better. For $40 there, I got a wash, cut, full blow dry, flat iron, and style. And I was much more impressed. Turns out the "Layers" I got at your salon were missing in the middle which left my hair hanging flat and droopy all the time. No wonder I didn't like it. Maybe had you cut my hair, it would have gone better, however, I think I will continue to go down the road. Thanks. read more

We all love the trendy salons and hope to receive great customer service but Salon Epiffani did not meet my expectations. First visit I go for only a touchup with stylist Aileen. Quite simple right? I'm new to the area and wanted a trendy spot to feel girlie and wouldn't mind paying the extra $$ for it. After my touchup I also had my hair straighten and you would think by straightening it, Aileen would notice that the touch up did not cover much. My roots grow out a quite dark brown/black and the rest of my hair is a brownish auburn. Big difference. So I noticed it in the salon but did not want to mention it as I figured it was late and maybe I was just not seeing it right and would wait until the next day to see. Yup, I was right, parts of my hair was different colors and I really could not even believe she let me leave without saying anything after the straighten. She could clearly see the color better than I could. So I called for a redo which turned out fine and she got it right this time. I tend not to worry too much as it was my first time with her and I know stylist do need to become familiar with your hair as everyone's is different so I had no intentions on never using her again but for her to be my regular stylist. So next scheduling comes around. I called in and Will answered. It's quite clear he fits a good look for the salon with his style and personality but I have never had a complication with booking a simple touch up. I requested Aileen and any day during the week for a 5:30pm or later appt over the next week. He kept asking me to repeat myself and that Aileen is available the following day at 1:00pm. Yes, that is great but I need an evening appt. Repeated my hair touch up, straighten, weekday and evening request again. On the 3rd time, he stated she is not available but maybe another time.. I figured I would ask for Nicolas as I have seen him do a great job on hair so hey, maybe he is available. So finally, he confirmed a Thursday with Nick for the following week at 5:45pm. Great, I am set finally. So that Saturday comes around and Will contacts me to see if I can come in earlier... I asked earlier on Thursday? He said no today is your appt and Nick will need you in earlier. I went over again how I do not have a weekend appt and requested a weekday appt. I then refreshed how he kept getting my schedule wrong and confirmed my correct time when we hung up. He stated, "No, you must have your time wrong.." I was not even in the mood to explain myself and said well, time to reschedule again! So we did for the following Thursday as it was intended... That's not it. So on Monday I figured since he had me all mixed up, I am sure Aileen may be available so I called and spoke with Brittany. A much brighter girl I must add and I even had to take her hours down so I could call while she worked vs. Will. So Aileen was available so I booked and requested we cancel my appt with Nick on Thursday. She checked the schedule and stated I am not on his schedule this week... Oh great.. I was so fed up I figured no need to even get mad or complain since I got Aileen. So finally, the day of my appt and I receive a call to confirm my appt with Nick the following day... Come on now, how complicated can this be? I cleared it up and just stated I will be there that day with Aileen as Brittany confirmed. Okay, done. I finally arrive and Aileen is working on my hair. I briefly begin to explain to her how frustrating it was to book this appt and she just say she apologizes and changed the subject. I would assume she would try to fix the situation and reassure me it will not happen again or at least acknowlege it better than brush it off. I figured, okay... So we get my hair touched up and straighten again, my roots looked terrible again and I even reminded her to be sure that my roots cover this time as the last time she stated she needed to use a stronger solution. But no, still the same way. It was quite clear again after she straightened it but I was just so fed up that I did not even want to bring it to her attention as it was late and I just wanted to get out of there. Now I have to find another salon to fix this as I do not want to deal with this again or even come across any frustration with booking a simple appt. I know others may have had a great experience and most of the stylists there really do seen nice but from my past experiences with stylists, I have always received a closer customer service that actually seemed as though they were much more attentive to their customer needs. April 1, 2011, about 11 a.m. I took a package of 20 inches of hair labeled for Locks of Love to Salon Epiffani. I asked the female at the counter if they accepted hair to send to LoL. She asked how much hair was inside. I said if they open the package to add to other hair to include the letter I had inside. She said they would probably send the package as is. I trusted this salon to keep their word though I'd never walked in before. LoL has not received the package. Petra the owner refuses to tell me who worked that day. She also says they cut/do not send hair for LoL. So where is the hair my daughter and I grew out for years to donate in my mother's name? read more
