I was so pleased with my visit to Salon EFX. I just moved here from the other side of the country and needed to find a place for hair care. The woman who cut my hair cut my bags a little long, but it was no problem to go back and get that fixed. Everyone was super friendly and I'm very pleased with my haircut (I'm the type of hair customer who points at 5 pictures and expects the salon expert to figure out what I want and and also make it look good--and they did!). After 10 years of always leaving hair salons looking like a sad frizzy wet poodle (I'm sure curly haired gals everywhere can relate to this!), I finally found a salon that knows how to cut my hair properly. And it's this one! For girls out there who have curly hair, I recommend you work with Sirena. During the appointment, I told her I didn't want a bob cut and style that required too much maintenance. I also showed her a picture of the hairstyle I wanted which was short, flowy with layers (at the time, my hair was over 14 inches long). She listened and did a fantastic job cutting my hair. Everyone at the salon is so nice and Tom does an amazing job. After trying all different stylists downtown while living in Dupont Circle without much luck it was such a relieve to find a really fabulous stylist that I can trust to do what he thinks best. Plus the salon prices are incredibly reasonable. Even if I do move out of Takoma Park I will still make the trek to New Hampshire Avenue to have Tom cut my hair. (Also, his Vietnamese restaurant next door is delicious so you can get pampered and dined!) read more

This salon was fantastic. Clean, professional and friendly. I did not have to wait for my appointment. It was my first time at salon efx and I will not go anywhere else as long as I am in Maryland. Tom did my hair. He listened to every detail and when he was done it was better than I had ever imagined - I would go so far as to saying it was my best haircut ever. He is highly experienced and after looking at the work being done in the rest of the salon - so were the rest of the stylists working there. Not once did Tom (or anyone else) try to push me into buying hair products but he was very knowledgeable about the products he used. I got a five star haircut at a modest price. Tina cut my hair in a totally new style on my request the very first time I saw her, just as I asked and it looks great! Most people dont want to do something drastic on a first-time client, but she did and I'm so greatful to finally have a style rather than the long hair perpetually in a ponytail look! The star off is because I have curly hair and I don't think they see a lot of curly there to style it best, but I know how to do it at home with this cut, so I am very happy. read more

Great place. I had my hair cut by the owner, I believe Tom. Tom squeezed me in on Friday even after I called 30 minutes beforehand when he had other clients' appts so close to mine. He cut and partially highlighted my hair. I came in with long hair and didn't want him to take to much off, but feared the inevitable would happen. He didn't cut off too much though! my hair cut looks sexy and long and the partial highlights lighten up my face and make me look and feel sexier. I love my long hair! I believe any hair salon that can make a person feel even better than when they came in, has done a great job. Tom did that for me. I've been coming here for years. Tom is my guy! He always does a good job with my shoulder length hair, and he gives me a cut that respects that I don't have an hour to do my hair in the morning! I've been to salons where the stylist always tries to sell me fancy shampoo or gel or something - I've never, ever had that experience here. I tend to wake up one day and say, "I needed my hair cut *yesterday*" - If you are like me, you might get a little bit frustrated because Tom's popularity won't allow a same-day appointment (at least evenings/weekends), but I've never had to wait longer than a week. When I got engaged and it was time to plan my wedding, there was no other choice as to where to get my hair done! Tina did my updo, and they opened the shop a little early so my bridesmaids and I could have our hair done on time for my wedding. I just moved back to Silver Spring and was looking for a great haircut. A friend recommended Tom and Salan EFX. I checked out Yelp and liked what I read so i went in for a haircut and highlights. Tom did an amazing job and I believe that I got one of the best haircuts that I have ever had. Tom took his time with the cut and the highlights look really great. I've been going to Tom since Michelle F referred me. I LOVE him. LOVE! I gave him the biggest disaster to work with and he has been talking me off the ledge for over a year and a half. I finally feel like myself again and I am super grateful. I have terribly difficult hair to cut and in trying to find someone to cut it when I first got here left me in tears on more than one occasion. But, happily, I was referred to Tom and he is fabulous. Alright, I've been going to this salon for 8 years. There are only two people in there I find extremely awesome. First would be Tina. The one and only person I will go to. And this other guy who wears glasses... I don't remember his name. Anyway. Tina is amazing with hair from any length. May it be short, medium, or long. She''ll give you sexy if you want sexy, she'll give you bizarre if you want bizarre, and if you want to be boring and safe, she can give you that too. I've never been to another stylist before that could give me whatever it was that I asked for. There has never been anytime that I've come out disappointed. And trust me, I have experimented many different styles, from ear length short to past bra strap long. And from blonde to jet black. She's been able to do it all. I scheduled an appointment for a trial on my wedding hairdo. After providing the stylist a picture of what I wanted, she spent 2.5 hours doing 3 different hairstyles that were completely different. In the interest of time, I finally settled on a hairstyle. I walk up to the counter and the stylist informs me that she is not available to do my hair on my wedding date. I just wasted 2.5 hours with a stylist that's not available to do my hair! To make matters worse...they charged me $85 for the trial. Why would you set up my trial with a stylist that's not available on my wedding date. I would never recommend this business to anyone. I was robbed of my time and money. No bride should have to experience such poor customer service during such an exciting time in her life. read more

My hair cut looks a little sllly. It's very poofy on top and skimpy on bottom--like an 80's rocker cut, which I am not hip enough to pull off. My bangs look really heavy and awkward. I did ask for some thinning of my thick hair though, but in the past this hasn't resulted in such a bubble head appearance. Kim was my hairstylist and both times I've been to her she has complained a lot about clients being too picky. The price is pretty great, which was the main reason I returned after the first visit. Now I'm just going to stay away and wait for the bottom part of my hair to grow back in thickness. It's long enough for a pony tail, so that's going to have be my summer Barbie look. read more

I went back to Tom and got another great cut!! FYI: I am an utter wash and go type of person (I even left the salon with wet hair). I have relatively straight shoulder length hair. After showering and doing ABSOLUTELY nothing to my hair the compliments do not end. That is a great cut. read more

Unfortunately I have gone back a few more times to get highlights and my hair is now. totally fried. The last time I went the recommendation by Zena (she is very nice) was to get highlights again and then on top of that a toner to make rmy hair look more of an ash blonde. Bad, bad, bad. I have naturally dark hair and that was just too much bleach for my hair. I used only good hair products (pureology, kerastase) and still my hair was not back to normal. I went back to my old hairdresser. Even if she is more expensive, she has never made my hair dry out when she was highlighting my hair. She has cut it and shaped it and now is working on bringing my softness back and then later start putting color back on my hair. . I will not be going back to Salon EFX. read more

Okay, this place is THE BEST in the DC metro area, HANDS DOWN. It is pretty difficult to find a trust worthy and talented salon that is affordable anywhere, but particularly in the DC area. I have been terrified to entrust my short hairstyle to anyone in the area, until a great friend recommended this salon. Serena is AMAZING. She was detailed, cordial, knew what I wanted and didnt push products on me, but explained how they might help my particular hair texture. I cannot give enough positive praise for this salon, they do AWESOME work and I will be a lifelong customer! While I was there, Serena explained to me that some of the customers in that salon that day have been going there since the 1970s! Thats a statement. If you are unsure about trusting a salon with your hair, trust me, this is the place to go if you want talented hair stylists, a value for your money, and unprecedented attention to detail. Let me preface this review by saying I absolutely hate going to salons to have my hair done because it usually ends horribly. However, this was just not the case here!!! I have never left a salon absolutely loving everything about my hair, either the cut could have been better or the color could have come out better. I had my hair done on Saturday and here I am on Monday still looking at how pretty it is!!! I have received so, so many compliments on how gorgeous it is! I was originally scheduled to have my hair highlighted and cut at 10 am with Serena, however, she had a death in the family but the receptionist (who is possibly the happiest/bubbliest person I've ever met) worked with me to fit me in on that day with Zena. I was pretty explicit with Zena how I wanted my hair to look, I showed her pictures and told her I wanted ONLY an inch taken off and she did just that! She was so sweet and caring the entire time! Constantly making sure I was comfortable (I have very thick hair, so foil highlighting takes a long time) and chit chatting with me. She highlighted and low-lighted my hair, trimmed it and fixed my bangs and did an amazing job! I also love the products that she recommended for my hair. I paid $130 for highlights, low-lights, a cut, wash and style and was completely satisfied! Trying to have that done elsewhere would have definitely cost me $150+! You honestly cannot beat the service or the price! Also, the lady in the chair behind me (who came in at the same time as I did) left with gorgeous hair as well! I will definitely be coming back here for as long as I'm living in the DC area!!! read more

This salon is a rare combination of great prices AND a skilled staff. I've only worked with Zena, but she's done cuts, all over color, and highlights on me and I keep going back. It may take you a week to get an appointment if you want to go in on a Saturday or Sunday, but they can always fit you in during the week. I was so incredibly disappointed when I got home and noticed how much of my split ends were still there. Went in for a hair dye and the stylist showed me her color options and we agreed on dark scarlet jo kind of red. She didn't speak to me much the 3 hours I was in her chair and she dyed my hair orange. Like clown orange. .. Then she tried to fix it by adding Brown. By the end of everything I had orange Brown hair. .. They charged me 145 for the wrong color and a cut. Never ever going back. read more

I tried Salon EFX today after reading positive reviews on yelp and a neighborhood listserv, and I am so glad I went! I saw Tina, and my hair turned out exactly how I hoped it would, even though I was very vague in describing what I wanted! I have been highlighting my hair light blonde for a number of years, and I was several months overdue for a haircut, so my hair was in pretty bad shape. I told her I wanted to bring my hair back to its natural dark blonde color, and to just trim it because I am trying to grow it out. She suggested a combination of high and lowlights to bring my hair back to its color, but still have a natural-looking variation in it. She then trimmed my hair by angling the front and layering the rest so that it looked better while my bangs are growing out. The end result was exactly what I wanted--she seemed to read my mind! And the price was very reasonable - about $50 less then I've paid for a cut and color at other salons! I will definitely be going back again for future hair appointments. read more
