I walked in for a manicure and was told not having an appointment wasn't a problem. The receptionist checked with the nail tech (in another room), and came back and asked if I could wait 15 min. I asked if she was sure it wouldn't be longer--i only had an hour--and she assured me it wouldn't be. After waiting 25 min, I asked how much longer it would be. The receptionist checked with the nail tech again, who asked if I could wait 10 more min. I couldn't and I left. How hard is it to accurately estimate how long it will take to complete a manicure or pedicure. No apology for having wasted my time. I will not go back. read more

So glad I found this place! Zena is sweet, accommodating, and really talented! She highlights and cuts my hair every 8-12 weeks. My hair has never been healthier and she always delivers if i want a new cut or style. Their new nail services (I received a pedicure from Elena yesterday) are also top notch! I haven't had the best experiences with hair salons lately, but Salon EFX was an amazing exception. I called them on Sunday (they're open 6 days a week (Tue-Sun) and closed on Mondays - so nice for those who work during the week!) and they were able to fit me in that day! I called them in near tears about my hair color that I had gotten at another salon turning orange and being so unhappy with the way my hair was looking. They told me to jump in my car and they would squeeze me in. From the minute I walked into the door, I was pampered and for a reasonable price (My total at the end was 55$ plus cash tip). I walked out with beautiful and healthy hair and didn't have to worry about breaking the bank. Tom, the owner, was so gracious and knowledgeable and made me feel and look amazing. Called to set up an appointment for a trim. My hair is as short, and the cut is as basic as any man's. Just turn on that buzzer, clean up my neckline, and trim around my ears. My quote was $40. I asked how much a man's haircut would be. The answer was $25. I asked if this was correct, because I wanted nothing different than they would offer to their male clientele. Really this is a 4.5 star review. Honestly Yelp, when will I get to select 4.5 stars on my reviews already? I'm only leaving a half a star off because hair can probably always be done better - but I truly have to tell y'all that this is the best salon I've been to and the best two haircuts I've gotten in 7 years of DC livin and searching for affordable and hair in the same sentence. I've done them all - including 6 versions of Bubbles salons in the area - and you probably already know this, but they all made me cry afterwards. Zina (erm... I don't think I'm spelling her name correctly) is AWESOME and has left me truly, completely, totally happy twice now - a never-before-seen phenomenon. And you can't beat the price. I'll tell you exactly what everyone is telling you, SEE TOM. I have an unattractive, gigantic forehead, and it is with that that I am obligated to do the world a favor by covering it up a bit with bangs. Initially starting off the with "Mandy Moore, A Walk to Remember" set of bangs, I have since then upgraded and stayed with side-swept bangs, and until Tom, they've NEVER sat right on my face. They've always ended up looking stringy, and too thin. Tom took his time with the cut, made me feel valued as client, and didn't just style my hair, but showed me how to do it myself at home. My only complaint is that he goes a bit short with my bangs sometimes, but at the same time, I feel as though I prefer them a little longer than most people would. The man's always busy, and you have to make an appointment a bit ahead of time, but it's well-worth it! One more note: No gratuity added to credit cards! read more

I had Zena as my stylist. She was very good and I like how she walked through the whole process of what she was doing. I got partial highlights and a trim. The highlights are hard to say if I am in love with them yet. It usually takes me 2 weeks to like my highlights because I like the color better when it fades a little. Next time I am going to try and get the balayage highlights, she told me she was certified in them. AS for the cut I loved it! My stylist Xena always makes me look and feel fabulous. I have been seeing her a little over 2 years I think. And, my hair looked bad, real bad, I went through many stylists. My hair is very coarse and thick and unruly. And, it was just bad, so she gave me her opinion and told me to grow it out. I had long hair before down to my elbows, until the stylist I was seeing for about 4 years in Rockville, had a bad night and whacked my hair off into a short bowl cut. So I have been trying to fix a 6 year mistake. Growing out a short bob can be a pain, but I stuck to it, even though I did gripe a lot along the way. A hidden gem! Right off the beltway at New Hampshire Ave, it is in an old, low budget strip mall with 2 thrift stores around the corner. This place is amazing. I went there based on the Yelp recommendations, and was not disappointed. I've been back twice since my first visit, and every time, for 2 weeks after, I get compliments on my hair! And the cuts I see the other stylists give, wow, I don't think you can go wrong. It seems like they have a lot of long time customers, which I understand now- I have finally found a place that does a great job for a reasonable price. My friend and I called Salon EFX to make an appointment and the receptionist there did give us a slot but also gave us all wrong information about the prices, straightening,etc. We reached there and then they informed us that the person we spoke to actually didnt work there. We were very annoyed because she told us very different prices. But we decided to get a haircut any way. The staff was rude too because they were like 'oh you weren't too clear on the phone.. and you can't be in a rush, we will take about an hour ..blah blah blah .. ' But I'm ready to forgive and forget all that only because Kimberley did a great job with my hair. I had really long (waist length) and thick hair and I've found very few stylists (all back home in India) who can deal with my hair. I've been going to Salon EFX for years and I'm never disappointed. I always get my hair done by Tom and i've had coloring, highlights and a cut with him. Styling is best by Tina and Tom's wife! I always get long layers, bangs and a v-angled cut. he does it perfectly and cuts my bangs just the way i like it. I always ask Tom what kind of highlights I should get and what colors I should go with and he always advises meo n the color depending on the season and my skin tone. I just got my hair done yesterday and he styled it really well with blowdry and a little bit of straightening with the flat iron. read more

Great salon, friendly staff! I've only lived in the area for about a year (I'm from NJ and usually get my hair cut when I go home), so I was looking for a nice salon closer to where I live. I'd been to the Hair Cuttery in Greenbelt before, which is pretty good for eyebrow waxing, but they totally effed up my hair so it took me a while to find another place. So happy I came across EFX! My stylist, Serena, was incredibly friendly and helpful, and exceeded my expectations. My standard cut is long layers with side bangs and a little volume, which she made look even nicer using a curling iron. It's about ten bucks more than I would pay at HC or Supercuts for the same thing (about $40 for wash, cut and style), but it turned out way cuter, so I'd say it's worth the extra bit - and it's pretty damn affordable compared to most salons in the Beltway, which usually start at $60 or more! Awesome! I decided to get a haircut sort of on a whim, and was super happy that there was an opening for a walk-in, and I was helped immediately. Whoa! Zina (I believe) did my hair--she was super sweet, understood what I wanted but then went beyond (basically made it so my hair works great when I blow dry it or when I air dry it--a first for me in *years*). She also didn't push any products on me--she could probably tell I just wanted in and out, but it was much appreciated! This place is a hidden gem! I got one of the best hair cuts of my life from Kimberly. You can tell she has a really high level of skill with all types of hair. I have really long, thick, wavy hair and I showed her a pic of shoulder length hair with layers. Right away she could tell what type of hair the girl in the picture had (thinner and not wavy) so she used a slightly different technique that made my hair look exactly like I wanted it to be!! It's been a week and I've gotten so many compliments. Kimberley really took her time to make sure everything came out perfectly. She also gave me some great hair care tips. I took my 9 y.o. daughter to get her long, curly hair trimmed at Salon EFX a few months ago and Kimberley did a great job; she was very nice with my daughter and made her hair look pretty. Today we went back and my daughter and I both got cuts with Tina. She did an amazing job. She was very sweet and efficient with my daughter (who doesn't have a lot of patience for getting her hair done) and French braided her hair when done (which I didn't ask her to do). She also cut and styled my hair. I have waist-length, very thick hair. Some of the stylists I've been to have been either totally intimidated by it or have had the attitude of "Yay, a big challenge!" and then proceeded to try to manhandle my hair into doing what they wanted it to do. Tina is a true professional. As with my daughter, she was efficient, but thorough. She recommended some layers; I was apprehensive as other stylists have gone way overboard with layers that just end up making my hair look huge when it's humid out. She cut my hair wet first, blew it dry, flat-ironed it, and went back and carefully thinned it out. It looks awesome!!! One of the best haircuts I've had in a looooong time. And it was a bargain at twice the price--I paid $75 (before tip), which included wash and cut for both of us, blow dry and flat iron for me, and the braid for my daughter. I got my hair done at this place and it's not what i asked for. they're friendly but i really dislike how my hair came out.

This is a great salon... until you run into a problem... I was a loyal customer for almost 3 years until my last visit. I came in for a haircut, which Tom was late to for about 15min. I was having problems with my scalp at the time so wasn't comfortable using shampoo other than my own, which I explained. He told me I had to anyway. Then when I sat down to explain what kind of cut I wanted, he was curt, extremely rude and told me he doesn't have time for it. Then he proceed to spend only about 15 min on my hair. My cut was uneven and so blunt at the ends that afterwards, I mentioned it to him and he brushed me off and went on to his next customer. I walked out feeling absolutely mistreated and miserable. Then not too long after, I started to have a severe reaction to my scalp. I ended up going to a doctor. Called the salon, let them know of my situation and also told them I would need to fix my hair as well b/c it looked absolutely horrendous, their response "we don't have an opening until 4 weeks later"... Then my calls went ignored for a month, their staff flat out lie to you and say they will call back but never will. It took exactly 3 months for me to get my refund back!!! IF YOU LIKE THEIR SERVICE, FINE, BUT DON'T EXPECT ANY KIND OF COURTESY IF YOU RUN INTO ANY PROBLEMS. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO PUT IN HOURS TO GET THINGS RESOLVED. I've never been treated like this by a salon before and guessing never will. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. read more

Being African American I am always apprehensive to go some place new to get my hair done. I found Salon EFX on Yelp and saw that they had great reviews and thought i would try it. I was totally impressed! Zena is amazing. She knows a lot about all hair types and is very friendly. I never know how to style my hair and usually just put it in a ponytail. I've been to Salon EFX about 5 times now, and I just love it. When I moved here a year ago I was afraid to find a new hairdresser, since I'd been going to the same one in NJ for 8 years. But when I read such great things about Salon EFX I thought I'd try and give it a shot. I'm really glad I did, because I couldn't be happier with my hair. The salon's not super fancy when you walk in, but its more then presentable. Everyone is friendly, and I've never had to wait more then a few minutes. When I call to make my appts, I ask for Xena (or Zina? sp?) because after my first great hair cut w her, I was hooked. The first time I saw her she cut about 7 inches off my hair. I had long layers, and wanted a victoria-beckham sorta thing, and she did an *amazing* job. As I watched her cut my hair, I could tell she had years of experience, even though she was young. All I could think is how much more skilled and experienced she looked then the girl that cut my hair at Alchemy (bad cut, place is a total rip off.) She cut most of it wet, dried it, then continued to finish it up with a straight razor. I have NEVER in my life gotten so many compliments about my hair. Seriously, not even exaggerating, total strangers compliment my haircut about once a week. Now I go back to Zina about every 5 weeks to keep my short cut maintained. Every time she's friendly and professional. She consistently does a great job, and always seems to be totally cheerful and in a great mood, which is nice. My only complaint about Zina is that she cuts my hair sort of slowly. It took her about an hour the first time, and it takes about 45 minutes now. But I don't mind at all considering the fantastic quality of the cut and the super reasonable price. The cut's $38 but I always tip her well. You can pay on a card but you can't tip on your card, so bring cash for the tip. One time I had to go get cash from the ATM at the end of the strip mall and Zina basically said, "don't worry about it you don't always have to tip me!" But I did anyway I told her as long as she keeps doing an awesome job I'll keep giving her good tips. Another negative- my African American friend went to Zina one time and said she didn't do a good job at all. Also I've never gone to anyone else at the salon, and never had color done (thought I plan to) so my 5 stars are based only on Zina, and only on a hair CUT. I just moved from Silver Spring to Columbia Heights, but I'll keep making the drive to Salon EFX because the price and cut-quality is unbeatable. read more

I think I finally found a "local" salon to go to. Flying to Japan to get a haircut is not reasonable, logistically and financially, and I'm so glad I found this place! Zena did an amazing job, it's so hard to give this thick Asian hair a nice evenly distributed layers, and she did an excellent job. And honestly, only Asians know how to cut Asian hair. I've been to many many salons with great reviews, but no, if they are not Asians, they don't know the tricks. I even drove up to Philly Chinatown to get haircut many years ago. I don't get my hair cut very often, once a year just about does it. I came here due to the rave reviews. I had a newbie cut my hair (she had just come back from maternity leave). She was really sweet and analyzed my hair pretty critically. Not entirely bad...my hair is thinning, i probably pull my hair back too tight too often, my hair tangles A LOT, blow drying makes my hair poofy...and i'm forced to used flat irons...but it makes me look like a wet chicken. Yeah, I got all that from HER not me. I don't really have any issue with it personally, just thought it strange, maybe i've never had someone who knew what they were talking about (for the most part). Would I come back? I think so. I was charged extra for the length...but I have half the amount of hair of most people...i shouldn't have been charged more but i digress. I was charged $43 I think for hair wash, cut and dry. The wash was ehhh, the kid was obviously not very experienced, the water was coooold and his breath was all in my face :-( plus he couldn't wash my hair that was at the nape of my neck since he couldn't reach, i had to ask him to wash it... if i go back, i hope to get a different hair washer, the hair stylist however, i would be willing to see her again, she did exactly what i asked for, 2 inches and a few layers. she did just that and didn't take it upon herself to cut more of my hair, for that i am grateful. tip: tip in cash ONLY read more

I have the most difficult hair to cut because it's super straight and short. It's near impossible for me to find a place that does a good job and here, not only did I find 1 person who can do - I found at least 2! I have referred 4 people who now go there regularly and LOVE it. The atmosphere is awesome. Not only are there trendy fashionistas showing up but there are also little old ladies who feel at home there. It's awesome. I went to this salon because I haven't found a stylist in the DC area I really like and this place had great reviews. I don't even want to give this place one star. I can't remember who cut my hair, but it was awful. First, I told her I was trying to grow my hair out. My hair was about chin length and she cut layers in my hair that ended up being just about an inch long. My hair is also completely uneven. The two different sides of my head look like two different hair cuts. One side looks like a bob and the other side has all the layers. Finally, she shaved my neck and not just a little. She shaved about an inch past my hair line! Then she told me I could just have my boyfriend or husband keep shaving it. I will never go back, not even to have my hair evened out. read more

I love this place! The first two times I went here, I went to Tom and loved him! Unfortunately, he's not working as a stylist at the salon anymore, and is instead focusing on his business next door. I was devastated but decided to go with a different stylist - Xena - and I love her, too! I was going with a completely different look: chopping off 10 inches, going with a long bob and a natural balayage color. I showed her a couple pictures to give her an idea of my what I wanted, but put my full trust in her. And let me tell you, it could not have turned out more perfectly than I had imagined.
