I love my haircut! The staff here was very professional and was able to fit me in as a walk-in which I greatly appreciated! I'm pretty simple in the upkeep of my hair - I have straight, dark brown/black hair. I barely have time to wash let alone style my hair! So my haircuts are simple - wash and cut! Lucky for me - I got Harlo and he was fantastic. He asked all the right questions about my routine and products that I use! We even talked about coloring which he stated that I didnt need. I did mention having white hairs here or there. We discussed length and he was honest with me which I highly value in a hair stylist. ZERO This place gave me an absolute "HACK" haircut, all uneven, SO unprofessional in every way! I wouldn't have believed it possible with totally straight hair, asked for a trim. NEVER had a horrible trim at any salon before! They said they didn't have time to do the highlights, to call and schedule another time. I called on Friday night, and the girl told me to come before noon, and they would finish & do the highlights. I went here once ages ago, but the stylist who did my hair then is no longer there, so when I found myself needing TLC after a botched DIY quarantine cut, I booked online with Karen. As a 4c natural I don't trust just anyone with my hair but Karen was amazing and did a fantastic job cleaning up my mess! And she was so sweet. I have a lot of anxiety around salons because I've had so many negative experiences in the past but Karen made me feel good about my hair and was gentle. I couldn't believe how fast I was out of there too, I don't even think it took 40 minutes from start to finish. Their COVID safety procedures are excellent too, I was taken to wash my hands as soon as I arrived, the stations were well distanced, there was constant sanitizing going on and it was spotless. I felt very safe. The other staff were all nice too. If you're on the fence especially as a kinky/curly natural, don't hesitate to go. They really do take care of everyone's hair. Jess is the best! So I went to a friend of a friend to do my color super cheap and she messed up my hair big time. Jessica saved my life! I contacted her & told her what happened and she already had a whole plan of action for the future of my hair and had me come in right away. Pro: Great place to get your hair colored. Con: I got one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I told the stylist to keep the length on the longer side - a bit past my shoulders with long layers, given my hair type. Not only did she not keep my hair long, it's not even layered. My hair now sits on my shoulders and it's as if she cut my hair straight across the back. Straight cuts tend to make hair look like a helmet. And it's hard to tie up since it's so short. Total fail. Overall: not worth the $300 they ridiculously charged me. read more

I have been a customer of this place for years. I was a loyal to stylist Carmen. She used to do a really good job on my hair. I did miss a few appointments. So she charged me up front for the service. I just needed a trim. I wanted to do a cute wash and go for a wedding that's coming up. I had long natural hair. She said it was "damaged" and cut a significant amount of it off. Then she pressed, and gave me heat damage. Now my hair was more damaged than I left it. I should have just kept my hair as is..since it will still require the same maintenance even though its significantly shorter. I am really upset. It's so hard to find a good stylist. Going to this salon was one of the worst choices I could have made with regard to my hair. Thank goodness it's just hair and can grow back. I saw the one African American stylists at the salon (I am African American and have kinky curly hair). She cut my hair wet which was good for the shape but bad for the length. A trim is what I asked for but a full on cut was what I got. She cut way beyond what was necessary for remedying split ends. The color was off- too red for what I asked for. The service over priced. The stylist was flippant with regard to my suggestions asking me at one point if I wanted to do it myself (part my hair on the desired side) *sigh* Never again. Ever. read more

I've lived right across the street from this place for over 2 years, and can't believe I've never gone in! I went in for a very impromptu decision to go from pretty long-ish hair to a lob. I hadn't had a haircut in a WHILE and was nervous how a shorter style would make me look, but Jaheem was wonderful and really took care of me. He asked me multiple times before trimming my hair any shorter just so I wouldn't be too shocked at the end result. I love, love, love how it turned out and left with a giant smile on my face. I've been living abroad for a few years and due to COVID-19 was stuck in the US. Figured it was time to color my hair and googled places that specialized in color but specifically black hair. When Salon Bohemia popped up I remembered I'd been here years ago when I lived in Brooklyn. I was able to book an appointment easily, received a pre-screening text the day before my appointment. When I arrived my temperature was taken, asked to wash my hands, given a new mask, and my towel and cape were removed from individually sealed bags. I felt safe and confident. My stylist was Jessica and she seemed confident and competent. The process actually started great. My hair took the bleach well but the initial rinse color was too brassy for me. I'm black, 50 and almost completely grey so blond is not my natural color. I been blond for the last year because my new growth blends well with it. So I wanted a color the same shade that I arrived. The problem started when she tried to correct the color. Instead of toning it down she changed it completely to a dingy brown. The result was night and day. After trimming my hair, washing it a few times and drying a patch to see if the color changed she eventually had to bleach it again to lighten it. Almost 4 hours later, I eventually called it quits. It was passable and something I could live with. Then came the bill $329. What!! I was basically charged for you fixing your error. Now I remembered why I stopped going in the first place. Being overcharged with a smile. Nice place, atmosphere and initially a good experience but way too overpriced. read more

I've waited a while to write this because I wanted to be fair, but I really did not have a good experience. I'm African American and went in for a relaxer and a short pixie cut, think Halle Berry ;). I've had this cut before so I was excited to go back to it and try out this Salon. When she started with the relaxer she used oil sheen instead of a base cream. I had never seen this done before but she said that it was better at coating the scalp. I didn't burn during the relaxing process at all, however when she was finished I didn't feel that hair was as straight as it could be. Then, instead of wet setting my hair she blow dried it straight. When you have short African American hair, it really is better to wet set it. It gives it a better mold to work with when curling. I have had it blow dried straight before, by someone who really knew how to work my hair, but again, wet setting is better. I showed her a picture of what I was going for, it was a picture of me with a short pixie. She got to cutting and started with super short layers right away. She then used a flatiron to straighten the sides. I kept looking in the mirror to see when she was going to really style it, but by then she said, 'Ok, all done.' It looked pretty terrible. It did not have curl, or a style to it at all. I asked her to lay down the sides more, but she seemed to be in a rush. (She had mentioned that she had to go to her son's school as soon as I sat in the chair. She also really smelled like cigarettes which was a bit off-putting.) I was completely dissatisfied. I think she could tell because when I went to pay she handed me a few random Paul Mitchell products. It was too little too late. I went home washed and wet set my hair myself. I was much happier, even though it was still too short but really, I shouldn't have to do that after I've just paid upwards of $110 to get my hair done by a professional. Now that I've let my hair grow out some I can tell that in fact some spots really did not get as relaxed as others. I did notice though that several people who came in to get their (long) hair curled and straightened, walked out with a lovely hairdo, but for short haired ladies, the 'cutting expert' that I went to, with over 20 years of experience, was totally not capable of doing my hair. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this salon yet!! I've been going for over a year now and everyone always asks me where I get my hair done. They're always surprised when I tell them I travel out to Park Slope from my Manhattan neighborhood, weather fair or foul, to sit in Nicole's chair and have my locks cut. She is seriously my personal hair whisperer. I have the craaaziest mixed hair (Chinese and Black) and thanks to Nicole I am finally, FINALLY in love with my hair! She gives the best cuts. I wanted to do a pretty dramatic chop (of 8+ inches) so I could get a shaggy angled lob and she was like, "OK, let's do it!" And then gave me THE. COOLEST. HAIRCUT. EVER. I feel like a rock star every day now. She also cut it perfectly to balance out my face, so now my cheekbones look insane. I LOVE IT. Salon Bohemia can do ANY hair. I am extremely picky and a perfectionist when it comes to hair and I have yet to see a single less-than-amazing haircut, color, or style walk out the door of that salon. Seriously!!! It is no joke! When the seats are filled it's like the United Nations of hair and everyone is getting something different done, and everyone leaves looking fabulous. Bonus points: the prices are ultra-reasonable! I was used to spending at least twice as much for a much shoddier job. I am HOOKED on this place. I wish I could give it ten stars! read more

After over 8 months of delaying a haircut and dreading the process of finding a new stylist (since I moved across the country, after all) I finally decided to check out Salon Bohemia, admittedly for it's proximity to my house, BUT also for the outstanding reviews. Once again Yelp came through for me, thank goodness! I booked a quick 1:30pm cut with Karen who greeted me relatively promptly when I popped in. I love the overall vibe of the salon (relaxed, clean, modern, but not overly fake-friendly. In other words, very Brooklyn-laidback, which is what I prefer). Karen asked me what I'd like done and after explaining briefly and showing her a couple of example photos she nodded and whisked me over to the wash station. Now, I typically try to wash my hair before going to a hair appointment (as a courtesy to the stylist, since I imagine handling gnarly hair is gross) and I was about to say that I didn't think a wash was really necessary, but I figured "eh, why not." I'm glad I didn't skip the wash because even though it was brief, the head massage felt fantastic! Although Karen cut my hair super fast, she was very meticulous and careful, measuring often and cutting both wet and dry. I was elated with the result and would definitely re-book with her again in the future. The only things I'd note here: - Be careful where you set your bag / purse! I ended up with locks of my hair in my bag, oops. (it's my own hair so whatever, but kind of funny/odd to find later on in the day!) - Tips are CASH only, which I felt terrible about since I did not have a lot of cash handy. Next time I'll have to double up on my tip to reimburse Karen! Prices were fair/very reasonable! read more

Salon Bohemia totally righted their wrongs! After making a mistake with my previous appointment, they took note of my resulting Yelp review and reached out to me. After making an appointment over the phone with Monica, who is the absolute sweetest, they had me in on that very same day for any service I wanted, entirely on them! Karen did an amazing job (as she always does) on my hair color. We went a shade darker, and after noticing I wasn't 100% satisfied, she took the time to mix and apply some more color. As a woman of color with very curly 3c hair, I've had my fair share of hair horror stories. But not anymore! Wendy and her entire team are so talented and friendly. The cuts and colors I've received here are the best I've had, and I always get stopped on the street or in stores by people asking where I get my curls cut. And, thanks to Wendy, my hair is the longest it's ever been. They realactually listen to what you want done, not what they think you should get done. The shampoos (and accompanying head massages) are amazing as well! At times I don't want to get out of the chair :-). I can't say enough great things about this salon. They are the best at what they do - so they do book up! But they have always been so accommodating with scheduling. I'm usually their last client if the day and even if I'm running a little behind (and I always call first to let them know) they always see me. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes after my appointment time to be seen, and the music and atmosphere are so good I wouldn't mind having to wait longer. This is more than three but not yet a four. Karen from Salon Bohemia is my new favorite person. I walk by here several times a week on my way to work and finally one day I walked in and was like I need an appointment for a single process on Sunday. I have resistant grey-it sucks. The only thing I said to her was that the woman who has been coloring my hair for almost two years never pulls the color through and I thought that was weird. Karen was like "yeah, that's weird. I'm going to pull it through." I am pleased with the results and return a second time. I am in desperate need of a haircut but it is not until last month I decide to take the plunge. I am like: "Karen, every person who has cut my hair for the last five years is all We have to take this weigh out-and proceeds to razor my hair." Karen responds "you have a lot of hair but your actual hair strands are not thick or oval so razoring is not a good idea in fact it sucks it makes split ends go to the crown." My mind is blown Karen is like morphemes in The Matrix I no longer know what to believe. She says "you want long layers? keeping it long?" I say yes. For the first time EVER someone cuts my hair dry I was kind of scared but figured it was so overlong if for some reason Karen eftfs up it will grow back. She seems to know what she is doing and then washes my hair and dries it. i.e. not EFFING it up. I will be back. FUCK the overpriced bullshit Manhattan salons I have been going to it is all about Karen right now. The salon is clean and they don't have a ton of BS you are overpaying for. read more

The staff is great, and the place it's very clean. Long story short I spend a whole year growing out my very curly hair. After that, i decided to get a trim and my bangs back. I walked in the salon and told the stylist specifically I wanted a trim. NOT a CUT. Then i walked out with 6inches less of hair and an uneven shape I didn't ask for. I wanted a trim and she fitted 6 inches of curly hair. Mind you, my hair was in a curly state, not even stretched. So it was a lot of length. It was my fault not saying anything. I just assumed the stylist understood me and knew what she was doing, after all, she's the professional. It's a good salon. Just not curly hair friendly. They need more training in how to wash, detangle (which was really painful) and curly cuts. This was about 3 weeks ago. I was very hesitant to post the review, but every time I look at myself in the mirror I remember how much work I put into growing my hair and now it's all gone and I have to start over. read more

I love the idea of this place. I got a nice cut a while back and ended up on their mailing list. They have nice promotions and for valentines day they sent out one for 25% off if you and your valentine have services done. We thought that was a fun way to spend the afternoon together so my fiance made an appointment for us and we went on sunday afternoon. Now you'd think that if they are asking people to come enjoy the salon together that they'd make some attempt at making you feel like you are doing something together. Every time I tried to say something to my fiance the women cutting our hair would say "What?" in unison. So we stopped trying to interact at all. from then on, every once in a while I'd try to get a glimpse of my fiances progress but would get my head yanked back into place. It all made me feel very special. I don't even think the stylist looked at my hair before washing it. I told her to cut no more than 1 inch off. She even showed me the inch she planned to cut off. I walked out of there with about 4 inches got off in the end...and she cut my lovely naturally curly hair after she had blown out straight. I told her I NEVER straighten my curly hair. Her response, "Oh honey, you don't have curly hair". Perhaps if she would have looked at my hair before wetting it and straightening it AND if she would have listened to me when I said I never straighten my hair she would have realized that cutting my hair while it was straight was going to give a god awful, dull hair cut. Aisha RUINED MY HAIR I was so excited to go here instead of trekking uptown to the Ouidad Salon to drop $200 for a blond slavic woman to do a curly cut. I have always been happy with Ouidad results but wanted to support the sistas and not go broke. I went in and told Aish, I just wanted a trim and shape for my newly grown, naturally curly hair. I asked to have my hair set in rollers so I could sit under the dryer-- the best way for my hair to be "de-texturized" in big soft curls that usually last a long time. I've gone to round-the-way, hair smoked places in crown heights and had that done for $25. My mom used to do it too. Not that hard. Aisha said she wanted to blow dry it and curl it with the iron but I know how that fries my hair and never usually lasts. Let me say that the next day, my hair was a frizzy, stiff and tangled nest. She also hadn't layered the front like I asked. I had an event that night and work the next day. I had to spend hours on my hair, which looked a mess. When I went back to have it done again, she cut it ok, respecting the length, which I appreciated. However, her technique of styling my hair was a DISASTER. She promised it would stay in for a long time but the curls fell and was visibly damaged BY THE TIME I GOT HOME. I hate to say this but they shouldn't advertise specializing in all types of hair when their senior stylists don't know what they're doing. read more

Id been transitioning for a year and my hair was a hott-mess. the girls doing my shampoo where super nice and gentle, then Karen cut my hair and did a very, very good job. She suggested a few products to me and told me that my natural hair was gorgeous, unlike most stylists who just want to relax, flat-iron, fry dye and lay my hair to the side. Sooo... My hair was super shiny and straight after Carlos did my hair but I realized a couple of days later how greasy my hair was because of the amount of serum/heat protectant he used. Also, when I washed my hair a small part of my hair was no longer curly but stayed straight. :( I went back and had Keke (sp) on another occasion and she used a lot less product and my blow out lasted a little longer without looking limp and weighed down. read more

Upon recommendation from a friend, I made an appointment with Patti for a cut. I had a good feeling when I saw the other customers finishing up with great styles. I showed Patti a pic of what I wanted--and thats what I got! She listened, did a great job, and I was out of there in an hour. She didn't try to sell me anything, didn't criticize my last haircut or colour--as many do. My hair was fairly long and I probably got a couple inches off. It's hard finding a salon and stylist that can manage the glorious (and oftentimes tangled and bushy) curly hair that so many of us struggle to tame. Luckily for me, I've found both in Salon Bohemia. The two stylists I had were Patty and Nicole (Nicole is not on the website but did a fantastic job). They both listened to what I wanted to do with my veryyy curly hair (think felicity-ish before her hair cut) and had me actually happy to wear my hair curly. Patty suggested long layers for my tresses, and I am so happy she did because now my curls actually have definition and look less like a christmas tree. This salon is great for curlies of all types, but be prepared to dig deep into your pockets because these great cuts come at a price. For a rising star stylist (i.e. junior stylist) cuts begin at $45 and for senior stylists I believe they begin at $65ish. read more

With so many salons in Brooklyn you think that customer service would be important. It's not just that I got a bad hair cut, it's that no one, including the stylist said more than 3 words to me. They had no desire to retain my business. My haircut was terrible and it's more annoying that no one talked to me about what I wanted or whether it would work. She just started cutting and didn't stop and now it will take at least a year to undo the damage. read more

Many many years ago I was staying in Brooklyn with a friend and was in desperate need of a haircut. For whatever reason, I wandered into Salon Bohemia and have never regretted it since. It's got a wonderful atmosphere to it, the kind that reminds you that this business was created by locals and maintained by locals. I love the fact that the staff is very diverse, warm, and offers excellent products. That day I sat down and met Alicia. Alicia gave me such a great haircut that day, I took her business card and kept it with me where-ever I traveled. I finally moved back to NYC and found Salon Bohemia was still alive and well. It's been over a decade, and I STILL go to Salon Bohemia whenever I can. Thank goodness Alicia is still there! She knows Asian hair. She knows how to create texture, volume, and has a natural sense of how to create sophisticated cuts. I have since recommend every member of my family to her and they all look beautiful after spending time with her. Here are other reasons why I love this place: -The staff who washes my hair have always been excellent. I've always received some of the best head massages here. -The prices are reasonable for the quality and expertise of the stylists. I have tried more upscale salons in Manhattan, and quite frankly it's not worth it to pay $$$$ for a cut when you can get the same if not better service at Salon Bohemia for a price that you can afford. Yes, it's a trip to Brooklyn, but let me say that the trip is worth it. I ALWAYS get compliments on my cut every time I see Alicia. I know you will, too. (Side note, one day there was a South Indian guy getting his hair cut with Alicia before me. I saw how she worked and made this guy look incredibly hot. She gave him a cut that was like a Mohawk, but it was cut in such a way -- with such class and detail, that he could pull it off at a Fortune 500 boardroom meeting.
