In my quest to find a new stylist to cut my very curly mop of hair, I gave Damaris at J. Antou a try. She was not in yet when I arrived (I was a few minutes early) and I was directed... well, nowhere. The two women at the front desk were chatting away and didn't seem to care much that I was a new client and had no clue where to put my coat or wait for my stylist to arrive. And no, it is not readily apparent where to wait. When Damaris came in, she took my coat and was pleasant. I was definitely uncomfortable with her idea of blow drying my hair out straight to cut it. I have NEVER had this done or even had a stylist suggest it since the curls all bounce up to different lengths due to the different textures in my hair. I have no idea if this would have been a huge upcharge since I gave her an emphatic "no" and was having serious second thoughts about getting the haircut. I almost bolted for the door. The cut was okay. Just okay. Not I plan to go back ever again okay, just not awful. Luckily, my hair is very forgiving and I am not high-maintenance. Demaris is a nice woman, just not the stylist for me or my hair. I also could have done without the religious and political views in her conversation. Everyone has a definitive right to their beliefs, but if I am paying for a service, I would prefer that I am not subjected to them. read more

They are my go-to stylists in Evanston; four different stylists with varying levels of experience colored, cut, and blow-dried my hair. They all got my color a beautiful copper red. They will work with you until you feel happy and confident about your appearance. They give you the results of a Lincoln Park salon, but without the Lincoln Park prices. If you go to the salon to socialize, you'll like George, the artistic director. He gives me relationship advice, which I NEED (LOL). The staff here create a friendly and relaxed environment where you can "let your hair down"...or curl it, dye it, sweep it into a chignon. They do it all! read more

This is my first yelp review (I've told myself to get on yelp to do a review for good and bad experiences before... never got around to it. But I've remembered this time!) I had a great experience with Vicki, the esthetician for my brazilian. She was not too chatty (which was nice, i hate talking too much about random stuff.. just let me text or stare off into space), but she talked when i talked to her. I used a livingsocial coupon for this service. She was fast, clean, and detail oriented. She even helped extract some older ingrown hairs that I had (no one has ever taken the time to do this with me before). She gave me tips on how to prevent them, and all that. She even gave me her card with 2 half off coupons on it for future services (which i will use on waxes). She's fabulous! The salon itself is super close to Davis Purple line, and its cute and clean. When I was there the receptionist was friendly enough and there were other customers getting their hair done. I had a really positive experience with J. Antou Salon. I purchased a Groupon for a cut and condition for $35, and was able to schedule an appointment for the 4pm the following day, with Agnes. I arrived and she was ready for me with a big smile. She sat me down for a quick chat about what I wanted, then spent the next hour conditioning, then cutting, then styling my hair. Met with Sepi on Thursday about getting bangs, and instead just having her look at the photo and at my face, she actually sat me down, played with my hair and showed me how it would look! Went in on Friday to get the actual cut, and I swear that woman is a miracle worker. My hair is still that kind of salon-soft you get from their products 2 shampoos after, and styling my new cut takes all of 2 seconds flat. The cut itself is everything I wanted, and I'm super blown away by how great it looks! I think the single thing that was the most impressive was that even though I wasn't wearing my glasses during the cut, or ever mentioned how the bangs would sit on them, she remembered and made sure to make them line up nice. Anyways, I could gush for another 10 pages, but really, Sepi is the best ever. :) EDIT: Sepi left, so I now go somewhere else. Refrain from purchasing their "$65 blowdry/haircut/full highlights" groupon! I called to make my appointment and was told that I can only get one highlight color. They should have advertised full 'highlight' (without adding the S at the end of highlight). I showed them exactly what I wanted (you cant screw up then) and was told that its going to cost me another "$70". After explaining why it will cost the additional amount (using technical hair mumbo-jumbo and throwing in the phrase "20% discount), I was thinking "whatever, do what u have to do, i aint comn back here." haircut- i also asked for a specific haircut showing my hairstylist what I wanted, and she simply didnt do it. she gave me a nice hair do to walk out with, "but now what am I going to do when I dont have your blow-dryer and ur blow-drying experience and cant carry you around in my pocket?!" I got a package that included Body Care, Skin Care, Nail Care & Hair Care... Well, I have only been able to claim the Nail Care and have not been able to claim the others because of bad customer service. Berta did my mani & pedi, it was good, I just wished it she had been more friendly. The owner/receptionist was really rude from the start. Asked me to sign a guest book, more like pressure me. She was always in a hurry & unfriendly! After my nails, I tried booking the appointment with them for the other things, and was told that they could not schedule me because they were too busy to take care of me! So, when trying to book an appointment via phone I was told that I would be call back in 5 minutes. So, I waited and waited and NO call. After a long time, I call back and was answer in a very rude way. As if I were bothering them. So, I let it go and proceed to try to make an appointment, the whole time the receptionist was in a hurry, and did not really pay attention to what I wanted. I wanted to book the Hair Care appointment and she kept offering me the Skin Care! She didn't book me for any appointment, when we were trying to figure out when I could come in, she totally cut me off and said "I'll call you today before 7pm to see when you can come in, and please don't call back!". I only went to this salon because I found a great Groupon deal for a haircut and highlights. I actually signed up for Yelp today just so that I could review this place and hopefully spare someone else from the experience I had. The highlights I received are ok. They are pretty uneven and not as natural looking as we discussed- but they did a good job toning them. The only problem was that I ended up having to pay extra for the toner, which they didn't tell me previously. During my cut consultation, I told my stylist that I didn't want any face framing, that I like to keep it long in the front, and she cut off about 3-4 inches (of my medium length hair) in the front alone. It's also uneven! I would never have asked for a cut like I received. (In all fairness, my stylist was REALLY nice, she just did not execute what we discussed at all.) When I saw that she did that, I got emotional and started to well up. She didn't know how to fix it, so she brought over who I assume was the head stylist. This woman proceeded to "fix" the cut while telling me what bad condition my hair was in. Then she proceeded to act as though my opinion on the cut was wrong and that it was actually a really good haircut. I told her that I agreed it was a good cut, it just wasn't what I asked for, which is why I was upset. Then she got offended, I started crying, and she stormed off. I was so embarrassed! The whole salon was looking at us! Needless to say, I got out of there as fast as I could and will not be going back. read more

So unhappy with this place. I bought a groupon for partial highlights and a cut. Fabulous!! I could never afford this otherwise. Yeah well what they surprise you with when you get there is that it's $20 extra if they have to use toner, and partial highlights to them is just across the top of your head. If you want some on the sides its $25 more. I wear my hair up all the time at work so I'm going to look like an idiot because I couldn't afford the extra side highlights. If you want a colorist who knows what she's doing, AVOID the salon owner, Jarmain. She has an attitude as big as a stick and will always make it your fault if you are not happy with the results- which, I can guarantee you won't be. I went 5 times and each time I had to tweak the formulae but got more and more grief from her because of it. This last time I asked for highlights to brighten up and she put the same level toner on as my haircolor, which equals no visible highlites! Then she took me outside to try to convince me the highlites REALLY DID show! And then accused ME of being hard to please . B*tch is too nice a word. Do not go here! A friend bleached my daughter's hair, and when I brought her here to have it colored, the owner and another stylist not only said that there was "nothing they could do to help her," they also ran their fingers through her hair telling her how unhealthy and damaged it was. She left nearly in tears. Two minutes of Google searches made clear that there are numerous options for coloring bleached hair. Today, I took her to Robert Gold Salon in Evanston, and they did a beautiful job coloring and deep conditioning it. It is a gorgeous golden shade and looks shiny and healthy. How could a salon owner not know what two minutes of Google searching revealed? How could she literally believe that you cannot color bleached hair? How could she not know that a business owner should not speak so cruelly and unprofessionally to a teenager? Go to Robert Gold or literally anywhere else but Salon Antou! read more

I've been getting my hair cut and colored by Karin for four years now at Salon Lotus. She is so understanding each time about what I want done and is incredibly sweet and friendly. She does such a great job. I walk out of there feeling amazing, and I've never gotten more compliments on my hair than in the last few years. Also, Vicki, one of the aestheticians, is great. Worst customer service experience I've ever had. Showed up at 4:40 for a 4:45 appointment was told to take a seat- no one came to talk to me to say anything until I went to the front desk and had to search for someone to talk to at 5:20. The response to me asking about the wait was "oh it will just be another 15 minutes. Are you a student?" EXCUSE ME? No, I'm not a student (though doesn't say much for how you treat students!) I am in my early thirties, but apart from that, a human being who deserves to be treated with respect. I couldn't wait nearly the full hour for my appointment to even begin and tried to reschedule the appointment. Again, was asked three times if I was student... Really, lady? Not once did I hear "sorry" or any type of apology, only non-stop questions about being a student and "why can't you wait another 15 minutes?" I called back to schedule the appointment because I had bought a Groupon. Explained what happened last time and surprise, surprise, again, NO APOLOGY. In fact she said "oh well people have to wait 45 minutes sometimes". I don't think so, crazy lady, sounds like someone will be going out of business soon- I can only hope that will be the outcome for anyone who gets duped into entering your salon in the mean time. I'm currently trying to have my money refunded. J Antou salon- you are TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should be embarrassed about the way you run your business and about who you are. read more

i was holding off until I saw how it washed and dried, thinking maybe, just maybe, I was overreacting. Nope. I bet Jarmen could be great if what you wanted was a style that she also wanted you to have, but in this case she and I definitely had different hair philosophy-- I kind of liked my hair long with layers, she insisted that wouldn't look good and refused to give me layers without chopping three inches off the length as well; I wanted low maintenence and kept reminding her that my hair is not a priority for me and i will not be doing a lot to it, and she kept trying to push processes and products. Really frustrating. I want a hair stylist who listens to what I want, not a stylist who thinks she knows what I *should* want and then delivers that regardless of what I say. I arrived looking for the haircut i got last year around this time in a different city, which i loved. it was pretty simple: just trim the bottom, because i don't want it much shorter; then add some layers. i've been growing my hair for the last year because i wanted it long enough to pretty much not have to do all that much with it. despite this, the first thing my boyfriend (who is the least style-conscious person ever and never notices these things) said when i walked in was "ooh... yeah, that is short." yep, at least the last six months of growing is sitting on the floor in evanston. Even as I was getting the cut, though, she could tell I wasn't particularly happy, and in response started reviewing her credentials with me as I sat there, as though that was going to make me happier with it, or somehow convince me that she knew better and I should like the cut because she's a good stylist. I do know better than to make a big fuss once the hair is already cut, because there's not much to be done at that point. It'll grow out; I just wish I had taken the one-star yelp review i read to heart and gone somewhere else in the first place. What bothered me the most was that after the cut I got the fuzziest blow-out I've ever gotten, followed by enough product to glue the frizz together, and was then told (note I had already said at least three times that I was not going to be using a lot of product or spending a lot of time on my hair) that i should be coming back for treatments because my hair was in poor condition. Translation: clearly your hair, not the blowout, is in need of help, and I refuse to listen to what you want because i disagree with it. The cut itself is genuinely bad: the longest layer is so minimal that it consists of only the straight, limp underlayer in my somewhat wavy hair, so i have an inch or two of straight that won't curl sticking out from under a bunch of fluffiness four inches shorter (because the upper layers are now too short to curl nicely). I've been living with my hair for three decades now. I know it pretty well. Never before today have I come out of a salon looking worse than when I walked in. Luckily the price was really reasonable, so at least I don't feel like I dropped a ton of money for the haircut I wish I hadn't gotten. read more

I moved to Evanston in January and have been on a quest for a good colorist at a reasonable price and I am pleased to say that I finally found what I was looking for with Damaris and J. Antou Salon! Damaris is just great. She looked at the "instructions" my previous stylist had provided and I was confident that she "got it". She was great to talk with during the process too. When the foils came off and my hair was dry I was so relieve and so happy. My hair was finally right again! And to top it off, Damaris asked if she could style it for me even though I didn't schedule for that. She gave me some really pretty soft curls. I was going to a family birthday party later in the day and my hair was quite the hit. Needless to say I will be back. It's nice to know I have finally found "my place" in Evanston! read more

Vicki used to do my eyebrows for several years, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to catch her, since her schedule is so restrictive. Sunny is now responsible for eyebrow waxes, but she is not as good. Sunny shortened my eyebrows without my permission. I don't know why she removed so much hair from the outside corners of my eyes, and it looks really weird. I won't be going back to Salon Lotus anymore. I am only giving Salon Lotus 1 star because it is impossible to choose zero. I had a TERRIBLE experience at Salon Lotus. I went with a group of girls (the bride and bridal party) for my friends wedding. We all had appointments set up very far in advance and were quoted $55-60 for up-dos. I would have gone to my own stylist for cheaper if it had been anymore expensive. First, the woman working with me insulted my hair. Then she started combing it out. I have very curly hair and running a comb through it only creates frizz. She did something completely different than what we discussed. When I asked her to change part of it to fit what I wanted more (I brought in 4 photos of my hair in the style I wanted) she essentially pinned everything into a ball on my head-- definitely not what I wanted. I decided to let it go and just fix it myself afterwards. HOWEVER, when I went to pay the woman charged me $77 +tip. When I explained that I was quoted $55-60 they just said, oh... no, it's $77. So I told them that if I was paying that much more I wanted the style that I asked for. They then told me I would have to wait for a break sometime in the afternoon to get it restyled-- um HELLO?! I would be standing in the wedding in the afternoon. They are not a cooperative salon. Complained about other customers to me. Insulted me and the end result was not even worth it. I could have done it myself for free and the wedding photos would have been much better. If you would like to actually be satisfied with the end result DO NOT TAKE YOUR BUSINESS TO SALON LOTUS!!!!! read more

Antou Salon on Groove and Sherman Evanston !!!Terrible terrible terrible experience. Last time I went there I had a Groupon, they charged extra money for toner and treatment. They said " your next visit we'll give you 20% off" which I went today. They put root touch and kept it way longer than the timer set up. I was wondering what happen timer's been rang almost 15 minutes ago but nobody is showing towards me. I guess the owner/ lead lady there said she'll put color on rest of the hair and leave for 10 mins and root touch should be 45 minutes. But Root touch been left for over an hour still nobody show up. Finally a lady came up to me checking the timer I said timer rang 15 mins ago. she's "like Oh" she put color on my rest hair and kept for only 4 minutes and wash it. While washing my hair the water was cold and shampoos running inside my eyes.... Service was poor. I wouldn't recommend any of my friends/ family. Just waste of money. Inexperience staff, lack of hygiene , hairs everywhere and filthy. Just disgusting ! charge way too much ! read more

Hmm, Where to start? First off, I sat down to wait a few minutes before my facial appointment while Nadyja finished up with threading another customer. When she was done, she suggested that I get my eyebrow and upper lip threaded. OK, I did need to get them done, but I usually don't like it when I walk in for one service and then get pressed for another before I even get in the chair. OK so brow and lip done, get the "here's the great products we're going to use on you today" tour, then going into the facial room. All is well until the extraction starts. Now, it has been a while since I've gotten a facial (I have a seven-month-old daughter who still does not sleep through the night), but I don't need to be made to feel bad because I put my little girl first and my skin care somewhere lower on my list of priorities. Nadjya said she was having to dig hard on my pores because "it's been awhile" (!!!) and then asked if I ever considered getting electrolysis for my chin. At this point, I was pretty tiffed but at least I could get a nice facial, right? Wrong. -no pillow underneath my knees or ankles, so after 20 minutes on the table, my lower back started aching. -she abruptly left the room and was gone for quite a bit, during which I'm pretty sure she did another client's eyebrows. -while she was gone, the steam and the heating pad turned off, and I was left freezing on the table. -when she came back, she didn't knock on the door before coming back in (a little thing, I know, but it makes a big difference when you're trying to relax and someone comes tromping into the room). -she used a brush to apply the mask and cleanser, instead of massaging it into the skin and doing double-duty of relaxing me. -she used her fingers instead of an extraction tool. Again, a minor thing, but it just seemed less than professional. All in all, I can say my face felt clean and fresh after, but I was in no way relaxed in that ooey-gooey way you should feel after a facial. If you want a great facial for the same price you'd pay here, make the drive to Deerfield, go to Renu and see Arianna. She massages you into butter, gives you a complimentary hand massage, and is very gentle and sweet. Completely worth the time and money. Can't say the same for this place. read more

I just wanted to write this so others would not have to have this happen to them I bought a groupon because I couldn't get into my regular gal at another salon and I was going on vacation and was desperate As soon as I called I was pressured into doing another service. I had purchased a full highlight with haircut. The owner hadn't even seen my hair and she was telling me I'd need my roots touched up too, an additional fee. Isn't that a full highlight? When I got there, sure enough, she told me I needed my roots colored and I could get away with just highlight, no low lights but it would be very light. I asked if I could do a partial and the root touch up so it wasn't an extra cost. She said no, it wouldn't turn out and I wouldn't be happy. Ok. There were so many prices floating around, I wasn't sure what it would be but I knew it was adding up. The owner told the gal, Gladys I think, what number to do my hair. I've been having my hair highlighted for 15 years, never have I had my roots done. But ok. My hair was done and she starts to cut it, it looks red!!! She says it is the overhead light. She turns it off, sure enough, it is brown!,! Not lighter like she said byt many shades darker!!! My friends were calling me " brownie". I was so mad but was leaving the next day on vacation so I couldn't do anything about it. I paid my extra $80 after the groupon and RAN out of the door. Don't make the same mistake I did. Bought a Groupon Now! deal with Salon Lotus, such a great deal! It said redeem by 7 pm today. I bought the Groupon at lunch and gave the salon a call at 2. A few odd things then happened. 1)They seemed really confused about the Groupon and what it offered (Haircut, wash and style), 2) the receptionist said they didn't have any room, that I should have called and made an appointment in the morning, 3) I could come in after 7 but I might not be able to use my Groupon Now! (not a chance I wanted to take really). The salon itself states you don't need an appointment and the whole idea of a Groupon Now! is spontaneity, guess they felt a little overwhelmed by the Grouponers out there in the world. Looks like I'm back on the hunt for a good stylist, but probably not going to try this Salon ever again and wouldn't recommend then if you're feeling spontaneous. read more
