I wrote them an email next day and they just responded with a sorry on the email and saying they will talk to the girl who shampooed but I think even if they were a teaching salon the main stylist should have checked if the service was done properly, it felt like negligence and rushed service. I was not feeling well that day, and after that I had to wash my hair again at 9 PM on a very cold day, only because they didn't do it properly, i had an early morning flight next day and this totally ruined my mood. I expected them to offer me some refund atleast as service was so dismal.. when I had left 40% tip as well. Nothing like that not even a call from them for apologizing properly when i was an old customer.. This experience left such a bad taste in mouth, the color also stained my nails before my hawaii trip. I'm not going back

The front concierge left as well, and now there are new staff members. For one, the main person that is and should be the first impression to the salon - the front concierge manager, Dawn - is completely imposing, rude and unprofessional. Then the rest of the staff seems pleasant, but definetly made to feel rushed and non cared for. Here are a few reasons to back of my statement: To put things under perspective, for this visit I had just requested a simple haircut & blowdry. Nothing else. 1. To start, I had multiple text notifications from the salon sending me reminders that I had an appointment. I showed up on time, and I was told otherwise - that I was not showing up on the system nor did I have an appointment. I was ready to leave since Dawn did not provide a resolution or an apology for the salon's confusion until a stylist passed by and took me in. 2. When I was brought in, I was just asked "what do you want?", no proper consultation and all was completely rushed. Then, I was told my hair was clean so I didnt "need" a proper wash (per the package description). So no wash, cut dry and then blow dry quickly without any product to protect my hair from heat damage nor was given the option to request this is usually my preference. 3. At the end, I was told the total for this 15-20 minute service was $80+, I had stated my experience and there was not a care in the world from Dawn, her response was " the standard fee for blowout and haircut is $80". I felt this was pretty high and not appropriate for the bad customer experience I had, but I still paid and left the salon. I went back and looked at the list prices displayed on Substance's salon's website. Here's what it states: - Under Women's Menu: "Classic Cut + Blowdry - Shampoo & conditioner, Haircut & Blowdry : $55-65" - Under "Salon Menu" ' "women's haircuts Level 1 = $69, Level 2 = $74, Level 3= $80, Level 4=$84. I was NOT provided a reason to the fact I was being charge for level 3, the answer provided was "this is a standard fee". Which clearly, what is written on the website does NOT support this statement. 4. Oh! To top it off, as I was paying without asking for what had happened - Dawn (instead of apologizing for the confusion and the MESS of a customer service experience) began speaking and said she didn't know what had happened and imposed that maybe I had done something wrong! IT'S ALL IN WRITING AND THE APPOINMENT WAS SET THROUGH THE TEXT REMINDERS THAT THE SALON PROVIDES. The whole experience was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND I WILL NOT BE RETURNING nor recommending this place to anyone in the Rutherford area!! It's quite sad, because this used to be my home salon and I loved all the staff and how cared for I felt everytime. I would always be listened to completely, cared for and consulted, never rushed and kicked out the door like today! Now I have no choice but to find another salon that cares for their clientelle, respects, consults and treats each individual as top priority.

I came in with shoulder length hair, and he gave me a pixie cut which is not at all what I asked for. Very sloppy cut. Was more focused on talking rather than focusing on the haircut. When I said it was too short and was extremely polite, no yelling etc. and asked what we could do, he refused to fix it for me at any capacity because he felt "too awkward now" and let me leave without charge. It's taken a long time for me to grow it out and it definitely left me frustrated with my hair for a long time. I was hesitant to leave a review so long ago because he told me the last business he started , he had to close down mid Covid. I was empathetic to this, I desire the business future success but I do not recommend this place for young women with thick hair such as myself.

The lash appointment wasn't the best because Jen kept leaving me on the table to go take care of other customers. After 2 hours it was finally my turn to get washed. I showed Richard the hair style I wanted- TWICE- and Jen spoke to him about it then asked how short I wanted my hair. That's when I got concerned because the hair style is for long hair, which I already have. My hair goes past my mid back. I told her SEVERAL TIMES "Do not touch the length. I love my long hair" Richard starts cutting and then flips my hair past my shoulders and I see no hair..... it's all gone. Easily 5-6 inches chopped off. Jen smiles and said "We only took off an inch" I wanted to scream, cry, vomit- it took me so long to get my hair to the length I wanted it to be at and they ruined it. They ruined it the day before my baby shower. Which Jen knew was the very next day. I told her I didn't want the length touched and all she said was "It was necessary" just ADMIT that your husband messed up big time. Admit that you said something to him that made him cut off my hair. You threw away a 7 year loyal customer over what you thought was "necessary" Well it's now necessary for me to take my business elsewhere. Also look at the other reviews and what do they all have in common? SHORT HAIR. Richard only knows how to cut short hair. If you are a long hair girlie please go someplace else before he RUINS your hair as well.

She's really quick with application, yet meticulous and I'm always happy with my lashes afterwards. They also last longer for me (almost a month) compared to when I get lashes done at other places. They have a new credit card payment system now, so you can save a few bucks if you pay in cash (I believe it's around 3%). Note: Even though they have "and Nail" in the name, they no longer do nails.

Everyone else at Salon Gossip is both kind and talented. Artwork on the walls is created by Frankie and owner/stylist extraordinaire Donna (what can't she do... she is doing stand-up too!), and is fabulous. It is nice to come to a place with positive energy, and it is clear that everyone is happy to be there. My hair looks great and lasts for such a long time. I love coming in here. This month's charitable cause, by the way, is lupus. Prices here are reasonable and they have good products available. Lastly, the conversation is lively, thoughtful, and fun. What else could you possibly want from a salon?
