During our visit to Seward, we asked some of the locals their favorite spot and this was it! It definitely is a hidden gem. It's definitely an interesting spot! "Cheap beer & lousy food" is so funny to me, but also untrue! The food is delicious and oh so fresh. Service was great as well. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. It's also nice because it's not in the downtown area, it feels secluded. Plenty of parking available as well. Food review: Salmon bake: (5/5) YUM. I mean, it is the name of the restaurant after all. The salmon is so fresh and is honestly such a big portion. We definitely could've shared between two of us. Crab cakes: (5/5) These were delicious! Such great flavors and texture. The crisp on the crab cake was perfect. The app comes with two crab cakes, but they are pretty big! Complimentary corn bread: (3.5/5) The bread was yummy. I've seen this restaurant many times on lists of restaurants to eat at when in Seward so definitely had to stop and try it. The food was so good we had dinners there for 4 nights in a row and we only stayed in Sewars for 4 night! The atmosphere is cozy, the menu is a good one, but the food was... let's just say I want to go back to Seward for the food alone again! Their salmon was delicious, the prawns too, the burgers were very tasty, everything we have tried was good. Nice service too, the food comes out pretty fast. There ware even pickles in a big drum you can stop by and get for a small price, choosing the one you think you'd like the most. As you are driving into Seward, don't pass up Exit Glacier Salmon Bake for their trademark salmon baked dinner. With a choice of two sides like baked beans or sautéed corn and garlic butter rice or baked potato and fresh corn bread with honey butter, I felt like it was the Texas Roadhouse of Salmon. You may come hungry but you never leave hungry. Add in a blackened halibut quesadilla starter to share and you will have enough leftovers for lunch the next day. I loved being able to go for a quick easy post dinner hike at 9:30pm to the Glacier View at Exit Glacier to give you a taste of what's to come. Had to wait a good 30 min before being seated and the servers were running around, also a few thinks were sold out by the time we sat at 7 pm. However, I can't say the same for the other fish plates. We ordered the broiled halibut plate and the captain plate. The fish was overcooked and dry, while the jumbo shrimp was RAW! Managed to get into Salmon Bake on Labor Day--their last open day of the season! I was with a group of five and they were able to seat us right away. The decor will give you something to talk about for sure...lots of interesting memorabilia. I ordered the broiled red snapper as I had had my fill of salmon and halibut this trip. It was a nice sized portion and well cooked. Hilariously they were running out of diverse side dishes (because it was their last night of the season), so I had beans and rice. Both were good. My friends enjoyed their dishes as well. Their draft beer list was good and I had their rotating tap which was a raspberry wheat. Very good, and a deal for Alaska at $6.50 a pint. Quirky place with mediocre food. In fact, their slogan is "cheap beer, lousy food", and I should have believed the food part. Cornbread (served before the meal) and pickle (comes with sandwiches/burgers, but you pick it out of a tub yourself) were the highlights. Seafood cakes were okay, but in coastal Alaska the expectations are higher than mediocre. The worst thing was the sides (weirdly seasoned corn, appeared like it had peppers in it?) and bland rice. The other sides options were baked beans and a baked potato- I really would have appreciated better options for sides. I got the sense that I might be in the southern US in this restaurant- country music, eclectic decor, and occasional cowboy boots. My husband and I each had the Gulf Captain's Platter, and my son had the seafood pasta. The complimentary cornbread with honey butter was good. After three days of being disappointed with the quality of cooked fish along the Seward waterfront, we stumbled upon "The Salmon Bake" on our way to see the glaciers at Kenai Fjords National Park. This turned out to be the best seafood we had during our entire trip to Alaska. The baked salmon and halibut were cooked to perfection--juicy and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The customer service was excellent, adding to the overall great experience. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior is surprisingly spacious, and they even have a full bar. The Salmon Bake serves far more than salmon! They have all kinds of seafood, and also steaks and burgers. It feels like true home cooking. Instead of "bar seafood" that is served fried and with French fries, this is prepared a bit more healthily and served with sides like corn, baked beans, baked potato, or rice. If you're visiting Seward, you need to come here for a culturally unique, fun and tasty meal. As Gayle and I were riding the shuttle bus from the Windsong Lodge to Downtown Seward, I spied the "Cheap Beer - Lousy Food" sign at the Salmon Bake Restaurant as we passed. I immediately recognized that this was a "Road Food" type of place that was a relatively easy walk from our Hotel and the only near alternative to the Resurrection Road House. So for our last dinner in Seward, we schlepped down the Salmon Bake. As it's a popular place and every restaurant anywhere was short staffed, we waited maybe 30 minutes for a table. Actually, we accepted a bar spot which sped things up. We really appreciated that they had both and indoor room and outdoor patio as a waiting area. That gave us the opportunity to go to the bar, order a few drinks, hang out, and chat with other guests. Since this is Alaska and we're in a restaurant named after a fish, of course any of our main selections would be from the sea. I went for the Salmon Bake Dinner, while Gayle choice Broiled Halibut. I mean really, who orders Ribs at a largely seafood restaurant? Both were delicious, well portioned, and nicely color balanced. So much for the "Lousy Food". The craft beer and wine were not "Cheap", and went really well with our wait and dinner. The rooms in Salmon Bake have a sort of a mismatched road house vibe, which felt both authentic and comfortable. Our bar area seat was also by the window facing the patio, which gave us a front row seat to some fascinating people watching. We ended up coming here 3 times in our 3 days of stay at Seward, as they were one of the few places that still accommodated walk-ins (staff shortages forced a buncha restaurants to limit capacity and/or focus on take-out. The salmon, as expected, is excellent. But if you don't feel like eating their namesake, the halibut and crab options were also pretty great. Waits were super long and our servers have consistently felt scattered and overwhelmed, but that was the case all-around AK this season so I'll hand 'em 5/5 just for the food. read more

We went there around 7 pm on a Thursday (group of 6) and were quickly seated. The interior is very interesting, seems a little run down but I liked the vibe. We got the salmon bake dinner, broiled halibut, which came with 2 sides each- couple of portions of rice, and one of corn and beans and we then added a side of prawns and halibut steak too. Fish and prawns were soft and flavorful. We also got the vegetable of the day- a bowl of spinach, mushroom and tomato, it was so nice! It appears we got pretty lucky, because there was no wait when my party arrived on a Sunday night. Coming from New York, I felt like there weren't many food options in Seward, but my group really wanted to try Salmon Bake for the seafood options it had to offer. For 90$ (at that time), you can get a pound of king crab legs with sides of potatoes and sautéed corn. King crab leg was very salty, but with the butter it was perfectly seasoned. The king crab leg was also very meaty and the portion size is quite generous. The sides were very mediocre in my opinion. Certain meals such as a sandwich and/or come with a side of a pickle, which I believe they make in house. You can walk to a barrel in the restaurant and pick out the right pickle for you. This was a fun place. After hiking to Exit Glacier, 4 kids and myself were tired and hungry. We got here a bit before they opened for dinner, so we checked out the creek and little bridge next door. We all loved the rustic, Alaskan decor and tons of flowers. At 5 o'clock sharp, the Salmon Bake opened and we were quickly seated, presented with the specials and given water and menus. Really getting that "Emperor has no clothes" feeling from this place. I was a bit reluctant to come here when I didn't see any reviews from Alaska Elites, which seemed odd. First, the good: the staff. They were fantastic! Friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. Now the rest: - You'll see a lot of reviews mention free whole dill pickles from a pickle barrel. They are not whole. And they are not free. They were at one time apparently, but now they have an angry sign on them saying they aren't free and cost $1.75 - VOG (Vegetable of the Day): was the best thing we ordered. It was cabbage with bacon. However, it had a $2.00 upcharge that wasn't written or explained. - I got ribs: the ribs were sad. They were grey and tasted like they had been boiled, not even a whiff of smoke. The sauce was a clear glaze that tasted like corn syrup and not much else. There wasn't even a suggestion of tomatoes. Any BBQ sauce out of a bottle would've been better, I just don't understand why you'd boil meat and not even try to fix it with a tangy sauce? - My brother got halibut fish n' chips: they were good, but very over-battered for our tastes. - My mother got the halibut sandwich, and just ate the halibut. The bun was cold and enormous compared to the tiny piece of halibut - The beer selection: is mostly from Kenai River Brewing, one of my least favorite breweries in Alaska. We are all beer fans but we chose to get water instead. There was a 2+ hour wait, likely due to the labor shortage. Disappointing. I saw many recommendations for this place when planning my trip to Seward, but it didn't live up to the hype. Be warned the wait times are crazy due to staffing shortages (which seem to be affecting almost all restaurants in the area). Unfortunately they were out of their namesake salmon the two times we went (the first time we gave up due to insane wait times). My friend and I shared the seafood chowder, gulf captain's platter and halibut sandwich. There was an upcharge on the platter for their substitute of halibut for the salmon they were out of. The chowder was the best thing we ordered. The halibut and fried shrimp were good, but not amazing...The halibut was pretty bland and would've benefited from more salt and seasoning, which for one of their signature dishes was pretty disappointing. The halibut in the sandwich was the same way, and the bun tasted like it came straight out of a bag of store bought hamburger buns. For sides: the corn tasted like plain canned corn (??). The rice pilaf and fries on the other hand were actually quite tasty! Entrees also came with cornbread, which was too sweet for my taste (as a GA girl, I like my traditional unsweetened cornbread) though the corn kernels in it added some nice texture. They do have some great cheap beers on tap, but overall the prices of the food here aren't worth it when half the food is lacking in flavor. read more

For entrees, my family and I ordered the captains platter, the seafood pasta, and the caesar salad. Let's start with the captains platter. The fried halibut tasted like nothing. Also, both the batter and fish were tough. The fried shrimp was barely seasoned, but it did have a nice crunch. The salmon was completely devoid of salt, though the char was admittedly nice. Avoid the rice like the plague, as it was dry and undercooked. The beans were fine. Moving on to the pasta. The pasta itself was cooked fine, but the sauce lacked in flavor. I prefer store-bought jarred pasta sauce over this. The seafood was once again, devoid of salt. Saddest scallops I have had in my entire life. The caesar salad was fine. The sauce was a bit bland, but nowhere near as offensive as the other entrees. I feel genuinely robbed for the food quality we received, but again, the ambiance and service were the standouts. This is hands down the BEST restaurant in all of Seward!!! Alaskan King Crab was great, Salmon was out of this world. My favorite was the Prawns, so good. People start standing in line waiting at Ray's at like 3pm so who wants to eat dinner at 3pm (no one) also their staff at the entrance were rude. Chinooks is closed on Monday & Tuesday, then only open 4 hours a day on the other days. We arrived & put our name on the wait list at Salmon Bake which was 2 hours then went for a short hike & when we came back we were good to go.
