Poll around the table is an overall 5 star meal. First time in Sydney and I was in charge of finding a good restaurant for some goodies, one picky eater and many Chinese elders that mainly only East Asian. We had a table of 12 and the had the set menu which I loved that each person could order their main and then it came with aps and sides. The mains were exceptional considering that managed to cook everything perfectly, fish and meats, standouts are Brussels sprouts. They were the best we've had. Service was as great. Salmon and Bear is a a casual eatery in Zetland, Sydney, across the road from the East Village shopping precinct. You can park in the shopping centre for 2 hours for free and head to the restaurant care free. It is a fish eatery which cooks the fish over charcoal in a Spanish Mimbrasa oven which gives the seafood a nice smokey flavour. This also gives you the sense of having your dinner at a campfire, and with the restaurant decor feeling like a log cabin, so it is very fitting. As we sit to peruse the menu, we are pleased to find they have a drink list with red and white wine by the glass or bottle, bubbles, beers and cocktails including aperol spritzers and a few Gins with home made tea and lemonade. We ordered the gin cocktails, perfect on a hot summer evening and helped take the edge of the working day. The menu listing Burgers and few classics. We begin with the trio of tacos; the sticky glazed salmon, crispy hoki NZ fish, and salt and pepper calamari, served on a soft corn tortilla with salsa verde, pickled pink onions and sriracha mayo. A good choice if you are after some variety. We also decided to order something different and went for the salt and pepper tofu as it looked extremely appealing. Nice soft little flavoursome squares with a crisp fried outer crust, flavoured with salt, pepper, shallots and chili, this was also served with a ponzu dipping sauce. One of their popular menu items is the Grizzly Plate ($27.95) for the original where you select a piece of fish (Ora King salmon, tuna, barramundi, hiramasa kingfish , or catch of the day) along with a choice of dipping sauce (salsa verde, peri peri, yogurt and dill, tartare or oyster and sesame) and any salads or side. For $32.95, you can add two sides. Sides include chips, mashed potato, coconut rice, sweet potato fries, corn salad, summer slaw, Asian greens or the garden salad. We opted for the Hiramasa Kingfish, cooked beautifully with a Smokey flavour and crispy skin. The salsa verde was the sauce of choice, the charred corn and the roasted veg for sides. Whilst veggies can sometimes be just veggies, the veggies at salmon and bear are on another level. They were boiled, grilled and then finished off again the oven, giving them a beautiful caramelised charred flavour. Topped with a honey mustard dressing and almonds, these a must order as your side dish. Poke seems to be the dish on everyone's lips these days and thus we were happy to see this on the menu. For those not in the know, it is a rice and salad dish originating in Hawaii, topped with sashimi. It is a healthy and nourishing option. At Salmon and Bear, they have a few different options. Whether it be cubes of raw salmon, tuna, miso eggplant or the salt and pepper tofu, you can select your favourite . They are served atop salad or coconut rice, spring onions, avocado, seaweed and corn salsa, with a soy and sesame dressing or chilli and lemongrass, depending on your selection. Finishing off the night, we had to have the dessert. Just as you might have in wood cabin by the fire, comfort food is always good. A soft gooey brownie served with vanilla ice cream is certainly in that category. Salmon and Bear is fitting for the whole family as it has a casual vibe, reasonable prices and a menu with Cubs (or kids) choices. The service was brilliant and the manager in particular was excellent, with her personable nature, thorough knowledge and efficient work ethic. We really enjoyed all the food here and have been here a few times now, and will certainly be back. read more

If you're a fish lover then you should definitely visit Salmon & Bear. Not only do you feel like you're in a log cabin in the woods of North America, they do food well here. Lots of different options to choose from, either grilled or fried fish and specials to boot. I came by because I saw they had a special Poke Salad, which is only the 2nd place I know of in Sydney that serves Poke, which originates from Hawaii. If you haven't had Poke, think of it as sashimi marinated in various sauces, like shoyu. At $20 a pop it's slightly expensive but damn is it tasty...the salmon poke comes with corn salsa, avocados, and basmati rice. Hope it becomes a regular on the menu. read more

We came here on a Saturday night at around 6.30pm and this place was packed! (unlike the other surrounding restaurants). That's when I knew food was gonna be good. And I wasnt wrong! I tried the grizzly platter (fish of your choice + sauce + two sides = $28). The grilled salmon was delicious. I wished they had took it off the grill one min earlier, but it wasnt *that overcooked*. There was not too much sauce , just perfect. The sides were huge! I tried french fries + chives mash. The mash was so buttery and yum. I cannot wait to come back to try the poke :) read more

I love trying new local food spots and it doesn't get any better than Salmon & Beer for casual dining on a sunny Sydney afternoon. Located in Zetland across from East Village, Salmon & Bear has a menu filled with fresh tasty seafood. They offer grilled (over hot charcoals) and battered fish, burgers, tacos and my new favourite - the Grizzly Plate: choose your fish, sides and sauce for $25. The styling reminds me of a Canadian log-cabin. One I imagine, I would discover in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. We sat outside in the sunshine, watching the people walk by whilst sipping on a Salty Beer. That's a beer brewed with Himalayan rock salts. This beer definitely is something different. They have all sorts of great beers to choose from on tap. We asked our friendly waiter for his suggestion. They also have a selection of wines. The staff are friendly, the food is good, the drinks are good, it's well priced, they offer indoor and outdoor seating, the food comes out promptly - what more could you ask for?! I have no idea how the actual food is because I wasn't able to actually try it. Twice the waiter asked me if I was ready to order. Twice I said yes. Twice he ignored me afterwards. But he did manage to clean a pair of left behind sunglasses and Ho across the street to make a phone call in his mobile. Great meal here so close to the airport. All the meals options are reasonably priced and served in good time. Tables are a little crowded but fortunately with the meals they clear fairly quickly. Definitely recommend the grizzly plate as a way of getting a good selection. read more

This Place is Amazing!! I was a bit skeptical upon choosing this establishment as our last dinner night here in Australia. Boy would I have been so wrong if I chose otherwise. We have ate in several high end establishments, and this place is well in the mix of one of the best places to eat. What is there not to "Love" in this place. We started off with some of the best calamari I've ever had. The paired dipping sauce was so deliciously on point. We then followed with tacos consisting of calamari, chargrilled salmon, and seasonal white fish, which were amazing. They were paired with a coleslaw mix and a sauce which added a nice spicy touch. On to the main dishes of chargrilled salmon, which was grilled/smoked to perfection. We also had the fish and chips. They were so crispy and full of flavor. Let's not forget some of the best sweet potato fries I've had. All in all, the food was EXCELLENT!! Now throw in the great environment and outstanding service, I would definitely recommend Salmon & Bear to everyone...Local and Visitors. Don't walk by...Come in and you won't be disappointed. Nice food and ok service. Spent about $100 for two servings in a fast food type of setting. Order and pay at the counter style of ordering. For that price you would expect table service. Customer service was lacking, tentative but not customer service oriented. Mediocre, think MacDonalds meets RSL bistro. Just more expensive. read more
