This is an excellent restaurant! We walked to it after snorkeling near Betty's Beach. Their cocktail list is imaginative. It was lunch so I had an IPA. Tasty. We had the focaccia and it is delicious. My wife loves king prawns. They were grilled to perfection and the shell and finger wash bowls was nice to utilize. The special was stuffed zucchini flowers. The salmon mousse blended well with the light coating and they were fried perfectly. Dessert looked great but we were stuffed so we had to just look. I love Moreton bugs and the large portions satisfied my craving, though I probably would have preferred a melted butter sauce to the aioli. The only real disappointment was the daily special side, heirloom tomatoes. They were mushy and the presentation looked more like cammed tomatoes than the vibrant fresh tomatoes I was expecting. If you love good fish, you MUST try the barramundi here. It was crispy on the outside and buttery soft on the inside just like I like it. The seasoning was just right enhancing the taste of the fish without overpowering. The beetroot salad was quite disproportional as it lacked more beets but had a light tasty dressing. I got a recommendation for this restaurant from the first person I met in Sydney. As a well traveled connoisseur, I made a point to stop in, as I am wont to do. The service? Excellent. The Ambiance? Upscale whilst low-key. The menu? A master class in excellence and diversity blended seamlessly. Walking in fresh off the ferry, dressed more for adventure than fine dining, I was seated immediately. While I was sipping my sparkling water and perusing the menu, they subtly removed the chair across from mine at my table. As I eat alone these days, this discrete show of respect for the solo dining experience was unexpected and appreciated. An opening volley of well-herbed focaccia and a fernet was swiftly followed by a lovingly shot-prep'd half dozen rock oysters. On to a delightfully well priced bottle of Marlborough Pinot Gris, an offering of some lovely variety of crustaceans called "bugs"in the local vernacular, and a perfectly wood-smoked filet of fish atop crisp green-beans. With this, I would have been a happy diner. But, I pressed on to a panna cotta which defies qualification and a glass of Armagnac which closed out the evening for me. Very legit fish n chips here. I don't understand why it's hard to get it right in the US but clearly Australia is pretty serious when it comes down to getting the fish n chips done perfectly. The fish they served was nice and fatty and full of flavor. The batter was very light and seasoned very well and not oily at all. I would order this again in a heartbeat. The fish was a Ling which is notorious for being a great fish for fish n chips because of it's flavor, flakiness, and texture. I also tried some oysters which were decent too but not as wow effect that I got on the fish n chips. I also tried the grilled Barramundi fish and it was very good, I would order that again too. After coming to Australia, I have a huge fondness with Ling and Barramundi fish because the flavors and texture are just so good. It's definitely not cheap here by any means and you get what you pay for that's for sure. I'd come here again without hesitation. read more

Good seafood place in Manly. We booked a table about 45 minutes ahead of opening as a fallback after a ferry snafu. When we arrived, we discovered the restaurant was already open - so the website or map app was wrong about the hours. Salad and veggies were terrific. Prawns were great. Calamari was fine. Trout was too salty. Ambience was a little problematic - it was about half-full, but tables are pretty packed, so we were awkwardly bombarded by the conversation at the next table over (a woman recounting how various tragedies led her to embrace the gospel, intended to inspire her dinner companions to do likewise, though they obviously weren't buying it). Starting with the Salt & Pepper Calamari. Delicately fried in rice flower maybe??? Nicely presented too~ I have the Scampi, which is very different from Scampi in the States. These shrimp were absolutely perfectly prepared. Not over fussed with, they allowed the flavors to be on their own soft, flavorful so much so I could have eaten another plate of these delicate sea creatures!!!!! For dessert we shared a Salted Carmel & Pear Pavlova ~ this is not a dessert featured in the states however it was beautifully prepared & presented. Not sure I would order one again however we did enjoy the flavors, just not my idea of dessert~ I guess I am NOT meringue kind of girl. A restaurant of this caliber I would have expected a more experienced or trained server. She stumbled in taking each of our orders. My first cocktail order was a Whiskey Sour, which she came back to our table to ask me what kind of Bourbon I wanted in my Whiskey Sour?????? Service here was impeccable, and you can bring your own bottle. I wanted to try the moreton bay bugs which I've never seen before, while my companions ordered from the daily fish menu. In retrospect, I should have done the same - their orders looked amazing and tasted great too. Out of the 5 bug halves I got, 2 pieces had chewy meat and 3 pieces had mushy meat. I've noticed that this sometimes happens with warm water lobster too, and just seems like luck of the draw. The ambience here was great, and my companions and I especially liked the real-time tv display of the plating process. Too bad I'm only visiting Sydney for a short time, otherwise I'd definitely come here again to try one of the fish mains. read more

Don't think there is very much I can add on the food front for Garfish. It's a winner - regular appearances in the Herald Good Food Guide, multiple award winner for food quality and other food standard awards, good corporate citizen etc etc. Yep, it's definitely a winner on the food front, an icon on the Sydney gourmet stage. And it's location is great too - ok, it is a step or two back from the surf side of Manly, but the yachts bobbing in the harbour, the sunset and the metronome of the Manly ferry arriving and departing are perfectly lovely. I just have a word or two to say on ambience ... the tables are very close together, the floors are wooden and the walls are glass, so it's noisy. On a good night this can translate as convivial, with a group it doesn't matter, but if you're looking for a tete-a-tete, be prepared for lip reading or specifically request a quiet corner (which might mean sacrificing your view). read more

Great spot. I had the snapper pie everyone mentions. Be warned, it takes 25 minutes to make. The pie was delicious, when it first arrived I thought it was a little burnt. It turns out it was done perfectly. The crust was crispy on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside. The pie was filled with a large thick piece of snapper, broccoli and a light cream sauce. Headline: Seafood Heaven This is a very classy place - nicely contemporary, quiet but bustling, in a mostly pedestrian area of Manly. Come here on a Friday night and we were still able to get a table no problem. Let's start with appetizers - the seared scallops with black pudding are a must have. You will hit yourself repeatedly in the head if you do not order these. They are completely mind-blowingly amazing. The squid (or calamari as the americans like to call it) are good too - none of that tenticales bit - just nice slices of squid in a tempura batter with a nicely spicy sauce on the side. For my main course, I got the Barramundi, wood-fire oven roasted with a crispy skin, turned on a bed of mushrooms, artichokes and bacon. You can't go wrong with bacon and the chef prepared this one so that it didn't overpower the dish. The barramundi was the star. It's a slightly sweet but meaty fish, similar in many ways to cod. The skin was not greasy at all. For dessert, I highly recommend the Belgian waffle tasting trio. Chocolate, hokey pokey ice cream are my favorites of the ones I tried. You can't go wrong with this dish though. Another good one is the cheese platter, if your tastes skew towards the savory. This restaurant should most definitely be on everyones list of places to go in Sydney. read more

Classy seafood restaurant overlooking Manly wharf. We went with a group of friends to celebrate our visit back to Sydney and we were very pleased. Service is friendly and down to earth, food is fresh with a combination of blackboard specials and standard menu items. A favorite among the group was the snapper pie with a nice flaky pastry. I enjoyed the Moreton Bay Bugs which are one of my favorite Aussie delicacies, but was also tempted by the numerous fish specials on the menu. The best place we have had dinner in Australia/Sydney during our 3.5 week holiday! The location is perfect being in the bay of manly wharf and the atmosphere is trendy and enjoyable. We ordered the 'fruit du mere' which was a great variety of different fish as starter and main. The Spanish lady who serviced us was a great host amongst other things recommending us to not let everything being served at the same time (normal set up..) as it gets cold before you have time to eat it. Also try the Beetroot and Goats cheese salad...yum. After reading the reviews I was expecting something amazing. But it really wasn't. Not for the price that you are paying. So for salmon you will be paying $35, and honestly for that price I am expecting the salmon to be one of the best cooked salmons I've had. I was hoping for a Master Chef moment where I can comment on the slight taste of dill, and the cleansing 'something' on the palate. But the salmon was ordinary - the same as I would expect from a bar. The snapper pie is probably the best thing on the menu - but again not that amazing that I'd pay $38 for. Sorry, maybe I'm expecting too much - but I expect a different quality of food from a restaurant to a pub. And sorry but food here was similar. The best thing about the restaurant is where it is situated - on the wharf. You get a great view. And the staff here are extremely attentive and polite. And they make the experience top notch. So if you don't mind spending a bit of money come along - but don't get your hopes up for amazing seafood. read more

I'm a fussy eater (read passionate foodie) and choose my restaurant experience carefully. These guys really "get it". The views, the service and the food is all done to perfection. I have been back here many times as my 'go to' restaurant of choice. It is a little noisy near the kitchen, so if you're looking for a romantic dinner, I'd suggest booking away from the there. All I can say is amazing food and great memories have been at Garfish. Anything I have ordered from the menu has never failed to disappoint. BYO is a major attraction, but they also have a variety of cocktails listed in the wine menu. The mussels were simply divine and the dessert menu very tempting! If you prefer fish, you can select from a variety of fish and choose the way you wish it to be cooked. If you're with a group, you might like the try one of the seafood platters they have available. The dishes may be a little expensive- you're probably paying for the amazing view more than anything. With so many people dining at Garfish it can also get a little noisy. It can be difficult to get the attention of waiters. However, the restaurant's atmosphere is appealing and along with the food, it makes for a good night out. read more

I'm a big fan of Garfish having been here a number of times over the years. They serve an excellent range of beautifully cooked seafood. The venue is across the road from Manly Wharf so has lovely views over the harbour. This is especially the case having dinner in summer as the sun sets over the water. Along with a selection of staples such as a shared seafood platter and a lovely fish pie, ordering at Garfish involves selecting a fish which will be cooked in a specific way, an accompanying sauce along with a side. This range of fish changes depending on what is available and the more popular will sell out during the night so be warned that you may need to call on your second choice. This is hardly an issue as I am usually struggling to choose between two or three options. There are non-seafood options for those who are not fans of what the sea has to offer. Let's be frank here and say that if it's your choice where to eat and you don't like seafood then although I am sure that these other menu choices are perfectly nice, it is the seafood that you come here for so there are probably better options nearby for you. The service is attentive and friendly with staff more than happy to explain the different options available. My only gripe would be one that all restaurants should heed. Diners understand and appreciate that you need to start cleaning up before they have left and this is absolutely fine....to a point. Don't start cleaning floors and stacking chairs around them when it's Friday night only about 10 PM and there are still quite a few tables that you are still serving. It makes it uncomfortable. If you need everyone to be out that early then stop taking tables much earlier. read more
