A party of ten is always a bit of a challenge for any restaurant, but these guys excelled. Atmosphere for a hot Friday lunchtime was great with the sun glinting off the harbour. Perhaps I have just been spoiled lately and the bar has been set too high but this place was not as good as I had hoped. We ordered a few items to start to share and they were good but hard to screw up so no points for toasted focaccia, olives or oysters. The octopus was really good and the scallops were alright although the sauce was maybe a bit rich for scallops I thought. I asked for a wine menu at one stage and they brought one but forgot to come back to take my order, so after quite a while my date got up and asked someone to come over. They gave me the wine on the house which was nice and the wine was delicious. It was Mt. Difficulty Pinot Gris. Then my main came and it was sooooo salty. I like salt but it really was kind of ruined. Apparently they are supposed to put a dash of salt on top which they thought maybe the chef had put too much but the whole thing tasted salty and I got it with the chat potatoes which had bacon and kale so that was also salty which just meant it was a pretty overly salted underwhelming dish. I wasn't super hungry after the starters so I wouldn't have said anything but since I had barely finished my main they did ask if everything was alright with the food which I was impressed with and servers in Australia are often quite complacent. They offered me a desert on the house and to be honest it was medium. It was a dark chocolate assiete AKA 3 chocolate deserts. Two of the items were fine but not amazing, the mousse was pretty delicious though. I found the ambiance to be quite loud and no real decor. The tables were just placed all over and you felt kind of in the way, a server even bumped into our table and moved it quite a bit. You couldn't really see the water but the flames outside were quite nice. There were also cameras into the kitchen on display on a number of big TVs which I also thought was weird. I assume chefs are doing their job, I do not need to spy in on them. I appreciated that the servers were concerned about the wine delay and the overly salty fish. We had about 4 servers over the course of the meal though which was sort of confusing. I wouldn't go back but everyone else seems to love this place so maybe it was just a few bad things at once. Once I got over my disappointment for not getting to have the Tasmanian oysters I thoroughly enjoyed my vesper martini with soft shell crab nori roll. I then ordered the south Australian mussels in chorizo olive pepper sauce cooked in wood fired bowl all with a nice NZ Chardonnay. About 6 of the mussels did not open. Finished with steamed coconut pudding and some great coffee. Service was great on a busy Thursday night. the view if the harbor at nigh was nice and i was close to the window...get a window seat. Great food. Tried the scallop entree, the calamari and the spinach goat cheese salad. All were delicious. My party had the salmon, prawns and John Dory. All were good. The only reason it didn't score a five is that it took a very long time to get our food. read more

What a delight! Went for an early dinner on a Saturday night, and my group of 4 all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great selection of seafood, cocktails, and lovely ambiance to boot. We called ahead to reserve a table were seated at a nice table with a partial view of the harbor. Service great however the food left a lot to be desired. We were a table of 4 and not one of us thought our meal was of a high standard and would not return to this restaurant. This used to be one of our favourite restaurants but sadly, like a few restaurants in Manly (Whitewater being one) has become very tourist. Before you sit at the bar area which gets very crowded quickly, you feel squashed and cann't hear they give you a red token with a number on it - very RSL. Then, when you ask to be taken to your table - it isn't ready! OK, picky I admit but then I ordered the 400g 'cape grim' black angus grain fed rib eye cutlet (GF) which when presented look great until you had your first bite. Fatty and tasteless. It tasted as if it had been frozen and then defrosted before cooking. My partner had a bite and literally took it out of her mouth. She made a good point - how could you sell a 400g Angus for just $44! We called the manager who was wonderful who agreed they had issues with the supplier so I ordered the saffron linguine and again, the linguine was fatty and the seafood tasted as if had been frozen. At a party last night we asked if anyone else had the same experience and interestingly a few said they had the same issues with Garfish Kirribilli.... shame.... read more
