Up on Exhibition Street near Trunk, Sally's Kitchen is an unassuming cafe catering mainly for the office crowd in the area. However, even if you don't work in the surrounding office blocks Sally's is still worth a visit - the food, service and wine are all excellent. I have the occasional breakfast at Sally's and it never disappoints. My standard order is the eggs with asparagus, hollandaise and prosciutto - freakin' amazing, and guilt-free with organic free range eggs. Usually I knock it back with a coffee, but a couple of weeks ago I went for a birthday breakfast with my housemate and we got stuck into the wine- there's a decent selection by the glass, and a lot of Sally's wines are sourced from the Heathcote region in Victoria, which is known for its shriaz, but I really rate their Italian varietals including sangiovese. Sally's Kitchen also does catering and functions - see the website.

Open early, standard choices for breakfast, but... food was cold when served ;( There's newspapers and latest magazines in the shop :)

Yes yes yes! This place is so out of place here on Exhibition St, and that's why I love it so much! It completely stands out in an area where, let's face it, other than Trunk, MissChu and League of Honest Coffee, there's nothing good around for aaaages!!! So I was SO delighted to walk into Sally's Kitchen (why had it taken me so long to go in??). It feels very New York to me! But with great coffee!! I even got my take-away toast in a brown paper bag, totally New York style!! Can't wait to try their always interesting looking breakky menu!

Walked 15 minutes to have breakfast, but they were not serving anyone because of a private work function.

The name suggests a connection to the street or bridge in NYC. Am I correct? Located in the alley between Flinders and Collins, parallel to Russell, it was a bit unexpected to find this eatery here. With plenty of tables on the patio and inside, the atmosphere was inviting. Being alone, I didn't want to occupy a larger table, so I decided to grab my order to go. After glancing over the menu, my eyes locked on the 'Reuben,' thinking 'this can't go wrong.' The staff were kind and friendly. Despite not dining in, they allowed me to sit and wait at a table. After a few minutes, I received my order and rushed back to the hotel because I couldn't wait! Excitement led me to open the box like a treasure chest, revealing a huge sandwich - the portion I had been searching for. In Japan, where I live, the general trend is to reduce portions to maintain prices rather than increase prices to keep portions consistent in the face of inflation. Now you understand how crucial this is. Another crucial aspect - the taste was on point. With a generous portion of meat, it dominated the experience along with the sourness from the pickled cabbage. It was a bit too sour for my taste, but I assume that's how a Reuben usually tastes. Overall, I was really pleased with this place and would love to come back again.

So finding the perfect breakfast, well let's face it, is reality easy in a city such as Melbourne. So many cafes and restaurants offering their take on poached eggs, smashed avocado sprinkled with the latest super food grain and freshly juiced kale and ginger juice makes it a smorgasbord of choices for today's customer. Hotel restaurants around the world have been offering up a breakfast buffet since the dawn of time, with a large degree of failure. The biggest challenge being keeping the offering hot and serving up a variety that keeps them a step a head of their competition. Collins Kitchen in the Grand Hyatt Melbourne offers up this time honoured tradition and where others have missed the mark the Hyatt have not only exceeded the mark but have set the barre to new heights. Firstly this is a grand restaurant overlooking the plain trees of Russell Street, with warm and inviting furniture that lets you know you're in a five star dining room in a world renowned hotel, a perfect place for the perfect breakfast. The major difference here is how they offer you the food, there is not a trestle table or Bain marie in sight, instead they have four show kitchens, each with a dedicated chef, either cooking to order your choice of eggs, be it poached or a wonderful fluffy omelette, or continually cooking crispy bacon, sauté mushrooms or an array of dim sum. Fresh fruit, an assortment of freshly baked bread and a chef offering to squeeze you a super juice, is awaiting you in another kitchen. There's a deli with smoked salmon, turkey and ham on offer with a great selection of cheese and crackers. If that doesn't fill you up then you'll need to head over to what one can only describe as heavens kitchen. Freshly made waffles and pancakes with fruit compotes and cream. Pastries and cakes galore will give anyone with a slight sugar addiction the fix they need. The only way to make this experience better would be to offer ice cream for the waffles, but that's just me being slightly greedy. This is not a place for a quick breakfast, to get the full experience you need to spend a couple of hours here and for $42 is certainly value for money.

Amongst the hustle and bustled, there is Roule Gallete, hidden in plain sight and snug in Scott Alley. A bit of navigating needed, but I promise... Wander inside and you will be rewarded with something that will pamper your palate and senses. I ventured for their Riviera ($12) - home made salted caramel, almond and vanilla ice cream. The feather-light crepes just melts in the mouth and the salted caramel had a good balance of sweet and savory. Altogether it was just fantastically rich in flavor. Definitely one of the best crepes I've ever had! Just like many quintessential French cafe, it has traditional intimate interior and outdoor sidewalk seating (best way to enjoy the ambiance). And to complete the experience, they got French music playing in the background and French staff, speaking with a strong French accent... OH La la!! In all, I had a lovely dining experience at Roule Gallette! The French crepe is simply divine! And even though the cafe is perfectly petite, it carries such a character that puts a smile on my face :).
