I've been on a bit of a rainbow cookie kick as of late - as a caveat, up to this point Fortunato's is still my favorite in the city. But Sal's is bringing the rainbow cookie into the 2020s with all sorts of innovative variations, including a rainbow cookie coffee cake and a variety with canoli cream replacing a layer of jam. In the end, our favorite was still the classic version. Although I had the same complaint I frequently have, which is that the chocolate layer could have been a little more generous. read more

I have been wanted to try out this bakery for a very long time. I finally stopped by here after work one day, and ordered a bunch of different desserts to try out. Everything was delicious. My favorite item I ordered was the rainbow cookie crumb cake. This was spectacular. It was the perfect combination of crumb cake and rainbow cookie. I loved it. I went to Sal's for my 40th Birthday Cake. I wanted something special and also something good. I saw a cake in a picture frame hanging up in their store. A cake half "naked" with fresh flowers. I thought it was pretty and asked If she can recreate it. She said she would be able to make it. I also asked for vanilla cake, French cream and berries on the inside. The only thing I wasn't to thrilled about was the buttercream. That was the only thing she told me she was able to use to make this cake possible! I didn't think it would be to much of it since it wasn't fully creamed (half naked). When I went to pick it up I really liked how it was decorated. It had gold dust in the cream. It had a really pretty luster. It came out better then the picture! When we had the cake, there was a lot more butter cream then I had anticipated. There was very little French cream in the middle, Id say 60/40. I assumed since it was half naked The outside would be less but it was pretty much was the same as fully frosted cake. I'm not a big fan bc of the butter but this particular buttercream was super sweet and tbh not really edible! The vanilla cake was delicious soft, lightly sweetened, fresh really perfect! The French cream with berries wAs just was an amazing combo! If they put less buttercream it would have been maybe easier to eat the butter cream with the cake. I personally have made really good buttercream. This is unfortunately was not def not good buttercream. Overall, this was a beautiful cake, and had an amazing filling! I would def order again just get whip cream instead. read more

I I always had my cakes made up at Sal's bakery. Today when I went to order my cake, I was told they would not make up a cake for eight people only 10 to 15 people. I never had this issue. It is such a shame they will lose business and now I will have to find another bakery. I love their seasonal pastries and desserts, always make a point to stop by and see the creative stuff they come up with! The staff is pretty friendly. They have two separate prices for every items in the bakery, one price if you pay cash and one price if you pay with your CC. That's pretty neat! They were giving away samples of blueberry cheesecake crumb meltways. I enjoyed that very much. I feel this bakery will do very well if they focus more on crumb cakes, meltways, horseshoes, danishes, donuts, etc. That is the vibe I got when I first walked in. Their pastries and cakes run small. Don't get me wrong. I'm used to old fashioned bakeries where they make everything big and easy to share with family. Their donuts and danishes are bigger then their pastries. I ordered three pastries, one rainbow cookie (7 layers) cake and two different types of lobster tails. The rainbow cookie cake was very dry, my parents and I did not enjoy it. I hate to leave a negative review on a local business however I had such a bad experience. I ordered a custom cake over the phone and provided pictures. When I went to pick up the cake they could not find my order, that's when the front end staff went to the back to speak with the manager. They accidentally had the date incorrect and said it was scheduled for three days from now. They offered to have the cake made for tomorrow which would not have helped. I said ok well we have to have a cake so I'll take a standard cake from the case. All of a sudden they said they could work on the cake I would just have to give them 4 hours which I did. They did not offer delivery and I had to miss over 2 hours total of a party I was hosting to pick up the cake twice. The manager did not speak to us or offer any apology. Absolutely a great bakery, and they make cakes you can only imagine. I am so happy to have a bakery in Tottenville that sells such scrumptious cakes, cookies and donuts. They are so accommodating with making whatever cake you want. I was so impressed with the cannoli log for Christmas. The only drawback of this bakery is the hours of operation. I hope the owner is reading this. I cannot tell you how disappointing it is to come there after work and you are closed. Many people work until 6 o'clock. Maybe you could choose a late night or two until 7. Even if I get out at 5 o'clock it's difficult with traffic to get there. Please think about it. read more

Sals was recommended to me for my mother's birthday cake. The initial call to put an order in was pleasant with Maria however few things didn't sit well with me about my 1st experience. I had set the pick up time for 12pm but I didn't realize how far out in Staten Island this place was and I am coming from south BK. It's basically the last stop before Jersey so I called at 8am and they told me the earliest I could pick up was 10. I said np but was wondering how wasn't the cake ready? I placed the order about a week before. Ok so I go to pick up the cake at 9:45am... it's not ready! I order some pastries and a coffee to kill time but I was just uneasy with the fact that they made the cake the day of. And I know it was made within those few hours because the girl who handed it told me to be careful because the cake was fresh and was starting to topple .. keep it straight. Listen I like fresh and I would never not keep a cake straight in the car but really. Anyway the cake was beautiful, my mom loved it and the cake itself was good but here is the main sour in my stomach about this place. The cake was cannoli filling. There was literally an inch worth of cannoli filling and then rest was drops of butter cream. Who enjoys eating more buttercream than cannoli? I kinda got the concept of why, maybe for security of the layers but at the same time no... because it's supposed to be a cannoli filled cake not a butter cream and cannoli filled cake. If they left butter cream on top that's one thing but they used it as the main filling of the cake. I wasn't thrilled with the overall experience ... next time I will just stick to one of the bakeries I frequent in Brooklyn like Michaels or Elegante. read more

There was no cake in the funfetti cake. It had 1.5 inches of icing in the middle. Not a fling but hard white icing. The kind you buy in the supermarket. And then outside coated with thick icing and sprinkles. The layers of cake were 1/2 inches thick, so there was virtually no cake in the cake. My company made fun of it saying have a little cake with your icing? It was expensive and a rip off. Go buy a box of Duncan Hines and you'll actually have a cake! This was for a birthday and even the kids thought it was disgusting . People were making sculptures in their plates out of the icing. We were recommended to this place and it had good reviews. The donuts were fine. The cookies were good but the cake or lack of cake in the cake ruined the party. ! read more

Just reopened today, April 21st. My first time coming here (wear mask and one person at a time). I ordered store made cookies and an iced crumb bun. Wow, they were better than I expected. There used to be a bakery on Richmond Rd called Auer's ages ago, and they were excellent. I've been searching for a place that was as good as they were, and I think I've found it. I bought a cake here and it came out beautiful but I place a last minute order yesterday and the lady I spoke to on the phone told me I had to leave half a deposit but I didn't have the card on me and I told her I would call her back in an hour . I had already told the girl I was on the phone that I'm picking up a cake I previously order. So regardless I had to come in and get my cake. I was running around doing a lot of stuff yesterday and it would of been appreciated if the lady told me if you don't put half a deposit you will not proceed your order. I come today thinking that it wasn't a big deal since I was already picking up my cake so the lady Sophia (very kind and great with customer service) helped me out in so many ways. I asked for 5$ off since I couldn't get exactly the theme I wanted and the lady Christina started bugging out on me, calling me a liar basically saying how do I know she didn't inform you about the deposit. Which she didn't I don't need to lie and get someone in trouble. And I was extremely grateful for them doing it last minute. humiliated me in front every customer that was there and told me I'm not making the cupcakes and went in the back. ok this was my first time there.. i was looking forward to it as i drove from jersey and usually go to alfonso's which is amazing.. i waited about 15 minutes to get in [ no big deal ] but boy was i disappointed once i got in.. the selection is tiny as far as pastries and assorted items.. no Easter decorated cakes as they weren't out yet ? tomorrow is Easter .. selection of mini pastries was about six and about the same for large. to many assorted cookies should downsize that and offer more variety .. next time will drive the extra 10- 15 minutes and go to Alfonsos its worth the trip ...!!!!! read more
