I've gone on about the good and bad of Chinese food in the area and have generally used the quality of the General Tso's chicken as a yardstick. It is surprising how many variations of this standard dish I have encountered in just the Beaver area, and how many of those aren't very good...but not all. Sakura wasn't even on my radar...it's a Japanese hibachi place, right? Yes but they also have booth seating and a menu filled with the classic Chinese favorites...and it is excellent. We had the garlic chicken, a great take on orange chicken, and, of course, General Tso's chicken. All were spot-on perfect. The chicken pieces in the garlic and General Tso's dishes were incredible...the cuts of chicken were prime and super fresh (many places have inconsistent quality), and the breading had a crisp, airy quality that you don't often find. The Sauces on all three dishes were excellent, the General Tso's having a perfect balance of sweet and heat. Oh, and they also do take-out. So who would have thought. A hibachi place is in my top two for Chinese food in the area along with China Sea in New Brighton. As for some of the reviews here, several seem to come from the same party who weren't permitted to have kitchen prepared food at the hibachi station. Not only are you skewing the numbers with duplicate reviews, but you are missing the point of the experience. The hibachi performance involves everyone seated at the station and depends on that participation to create the experience. Having half your party eating menu dishes and half doing hibachi ruins the experience and is harder for the chef. Next time you go to a movie theater as a group , why don't several of you bring laptops and watch other movies while the rest watch what's on the big screen? read more

I have been going here on and off for years and decided to give them one last chance. The service was never once top notch, this time surprised me on how bad their service has become. I politely asked several times for the mayo/siracha mix sauce to be squirted inside the roll several times. I know this can be done because I do it at home (when I make maki rolls myself) and other restaurants have no problem doing it because it is simple to do. I asked her "to make customer happy" and she still refused. I asked "as special customer request" and still refused. I even said "I will pay extra for special request". A request soooo simple that it would actually make the making of the roll a few seconds faster AAANNND,,,, she still outright refused to make a many time return customer happy. I am surprised that I put up t=with the service here for sol long. They are not the cheapest by far and the service thus time was ZERO notch in light of the outright refusal to make a customer happy even in the face of the customer offering to pay more. They even refuse to never have customer courtesy wifi. Will NEVER go back. They lost a return customer and by the looks of it, they need every customer they can get. I went to beaver where the service was top notch. I paid more over there but it was much more worth it with free wifi too! read more

Thank you for being open on Christmas (2025). You saved the day. Things did not go as planned and we needed dinner. The Japanese Hibachi and Sushi were delicious. The portions were abundant. Our order was for take out for 7 people with the items being delivered to 3 homes. Your staff packages each homes order separately. The orders were correct and each was tagged with name and receipt. Called for a last minute reservation, party of 9 including 3 children. The bathrooms are "out of order", with signs that seem they have been there for a while. 2 of our children needed to use the restroom. The staff giggled and stated no bathroom. We had not yet even been served drinks, so we decided it's best not to stay as the kids already needed the restroom which there wasn't one to use. We get up and start to walk out, we were questioned why, we told them since you have no bathrooms we can't stay. Then they ask, "oh do they need to pee or poop", we continued to walk out. Bad first impression, but I'm feeling we were not alone in our opinion as this is a fairly spacious place, and there was only one other table of customers. I'll keep this short... the 1 star is due to their reasonably priced lunch deals and the edible fried rice. But you get what you pay for. Maybe I should have went with the hibachi shrimp, but I opted for the shrimp lo mein. No bueno. I had a taste for Asian food for lunch and the restaurant I frequent was closed on this particular day. I should have just waited. The lo mein was greasy and the shrimp tasted rubbery. The fried rice that I opted to get with the lunch deal wasn't too bad. So glad we found this spot years ago. They are very consistent and the food is always delicious. We love trying all of the different menu items and haven't been disappointed yet. We have been able to get takeout during covid which has been really great. We can still get some of our favorites to enjoy at home and they package everything very well! We have been here before and had pleasant experiences. However, today was so bad that we will not return. First, we a party of four sit down at the hibachi table and two of the four (the children) ordered hibachi. They said they prefer if we went to a booth since not everyone was getting hibachi. That is no problem I can understand that. So now at the new table... sitting there for a while and wondering if they will come back to us. Someone shows up and asks how the hibachi for the children should be cooked. We answer and they are about to walk away when I ask for a menu so we can order the rest of the food. Well 20 min later and no menu. The children's food is delivered and I ask the waitress who delivered it if we can get a menu. She does not say a word or make eye contact. Just turns and leaves. Eventually someone comes. We get a menu. She immediately asks what we want. I say can we have a moment to look. I can order a beer and by the time you come back we will be ready. She brings the beer, sets it down and walks away. 15 minutes later she makes her way over to take our order. By now the children already finished their meal. We ask about the love boat and what roll comes with it. We were told it will be one of the speciality rolls but the chef decides. I specifically ask to clarify. This is a speciality roll not just a simple California one. The waitress confirms that. So they bring out the boat and there is a California roll. So i can not ask about it because after they delivered the food they never came back to check on us. So when I desperately wanted to leave and pay my Bill we got their attention. Asked about the roll and she was like. That was what the chef picked. And I reminded her of our conversation earlier. They rolled their eyes and argued with us and walked away. Lots of fun for groups. Sakura is a very interesting place. From the menu, it is clear that it is a Japanese + Chinese restaurant, and the location reflects that. The outside and the inside of the restaurant look like a typical Chinese palace style joint yet the name and the inclusion of a sushi bar and Teppanyaki tables indicates things are not as they seem. The Teppan griddles are referred to as Hibachi (typically open grate grill) at the restaurant. The food the I had was not bad, and they serve you a ridiculous amount. It is not going to blow you away and it might be overly sweet or overly saucy. From what I tried the 'hibachi' combo was perhaps the best, and again, the quantity was enough for two people. The sushi roll I tried was not too bad. The rice was not perfect, but the fish seemed fresh. The gyoza were definitely disappointing. Deep fried instead of the advertised Japanese pan-fried style and not very juicy, and the sauce was not quite right. I do think, however, that you should come to Sakura not strictly for the food, but for the flair. The Teppan chefs here are legit. Fancy spatula spins, egg juggling, perfectly aimed food throws, and even sake squirting straight into your mouth at a distance. Everyone was having a really fun time. Ordered 2 kung pao chicken with no veggies and Lo mein no veggies. Well the kung pao chicken was breaded which isn't normal for kung pao chicken, the peanuts were stale, and there was barely any chicken or sauce. Also the Lo mein had veggies. i used to like this place until my experience today. i asked for well done steak & my steak was red & bloody. I was also told that i couldn't have my food cooked in front of me but when the next customers walked in they were able to sit them right away. Wishing I could leave 0 stars! My husband and I were in the mood for hibachi but didn't want to make the drive to Cranberry or Pittsburgh and thought we'd give this place a try, total MISTAKE! We spent $90 total on two dinners the chicken and shrimp were both over cooked, he ordered filet rare which was sirloin and well done! Really good sushi. Very friendly staff. The soup was a surprise as it was made with fish stock and seaweed but was quite tasty with little bits of tofu. I sat at the sushi bar so I can't comment on the hibachi but the sushi was fresh and the portions good. I will be back there soon read more

20150207 Updated review: Brought a party of 6; sat at a hibachi table. From 5:45 until 8 the place was truly packed. For awhile nearly 10 (yes...) people were waiting on tables. Hibichi event areas very popular. Gyoza again fine; the shrimp and lobster hibachi prep event fun, and the food turned out well. A large sushi role (shrimp) enjoyed by another couple was excellent. Again, a nice moment. Don't forget to ring the gong on the way out. Keith was our waiter and he did a stellar job balancing so many people. Hibachi area can get rather loud (but that is part of the ambience). For quiet, try to old bank vault (now a small banquet room). The place did warm up by about 6:30 -- so again, we will be back. A nice gem in downtown Monaca. wifi hot spot available as well. f8 and be there -------------------------------------------- One visit only. This place is across the street from the fire station in downtown Monaca, and in building that used to be a bank. Seating in the "vault" for parties should be fun. Clean, spacious, tastefully decorated, adequate staff. Food was excellent. Gyoza much better than most places in the region. Sushi was crisp and fresh. (Many places have rather dated sushi -- you can tell by the feel on the tongue). Service was amazing, much much better than the place we went to last week in Wexford. Manager came over to speak with us and we had a nice conversation. So many places are trying to run without adequate staffing that it affects the perception of everything. No so here. Place now open 2 months and doing okay. Take out is possible. Large Japanese and Chinese menu available at the check in site. Wait station layout is very good indeed. Backroom sounds are simply non-existent in the front of the house. Sapporo large beer ... is .. large. Wine was $4 per glass -- most places are pushing $6 per glass now. The hibachi performances for the families (with kids) was just a lot of fun. The staff went out of their way to entertain. We will be back, and I am adding them to my "on the way home take out" venue. Note I did my UG degree (and some other things) in Japan. The first two times we went to Sakura, we really enjoyed it. Large portions, great food, and fast service. The last two times, however, were sub-par at best. The last time we were there will be our last time ever. The soup tasted stale- like it had been sitting for days. Two different people in our party found long black hairs in two separate dishes (salad and soup). Service was slow and almost nonexistent. All of us were sick after dinner. We just had Sunday lunch, arrived at 12:45 just after opening. We were immediately seated and given drinks. Our order was taken quickly, and we received our appetizers in less than 10 minutes. I ordered the Hot & Sour soup, excellent combination of traditional flavors. We both ordered Edamame, cooked expertly. Our entrées arrived about 5 minutes later. I had Sashimi, beautiful presentation, and every morsel was top quality. My husband had the Sesame Shrimp, the chef is a genius with vegetable art. The shrimp were big, juicy, battered and delicious, and the wonderful sauce was succulent. We are going back tomorrow with mom for Memorial Day Lunch. Now about the décor, the booths are roomy and comfortable. Pleasing color palette, and comfortably lit for a relaxed dining experience. This was my second time coming here the food was very good and they put on a nice show for you if you sit at the hibachi grill. My sister told them it was my birthday so at the end of the meal they played happy birthday on the speakers and the waitress brought out fried ice cream with a candle in it for free it was a nice touch. I had a very enjoyable time when I first visited this restaurant. The prices were very reasonable and the hibachi experience was quite fun! The thing that stood out to be most was how accommodating they were to my unique food allergy. I've got a very uncommon allergy to mushrooms. I told the staff about this when I arrived, and they made special arrangements for me. They basically cooked my hibachi separately from the others at the table to ensure that nothing I was going to eat came in contact with mushrooms. I honestly don't know why I keep trying to like this place, but I do. There's never anyone here at lunchtime which is why we like it, but I guess should also be a hint for us as well. I got the three roll special that came with soup or salad. I got two spicy California rolls with cream cheese and an avocado roll. The salad was fine besides the big hunk of hard middle part of a lettuce head in it. My rolls were brought out and there was probably a whole cube of cream cheese in them combined. That's all I tasted. They are normally equally made so I didn't think I had to ask for them to go light. I asked nicely if they could remake with less cream cheese and the waitress argued with me that that is what I asked for. I tried to explain it was too much but she kept arguing with me. So she goes and gets her manager and she ALSO argues with me, while rolling her eyes at me mind you. Finally after arguing with me about what I ordered she asked if I wanted them remade. I had enough. I said no. She again rolled her eyes at me and smirked and walked away. They still charged me for the salad! Lol. Whatever, fine. I am very friendly to servers and anyone in that profession. Beings I used to bartend I know how it is. This is the first time in my 37 years I did not leave a tip. No wonder they are never busy.
