This has happened to me twice. The first time I thought it was a mistake then today the same thing happened. I ordered Salmon, Avocado, Jalapeño peppers sushi. Twice they put sweet peppers thinking that I don't know what is Jalapeño peppers. Finally got that chance on Labor Day-my usual go to place Mitoushi just down a few streets was closed so my husband and I decided to finally try out this place. We ordered the baby tako appetizer, a la carte sushi (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, mackerel, scallop, sweet shrimp) and the 3 roll combo. The baby tako dish is comprised of 3 layers - lettuce salad, seaweed salad, and the baby tako. There was a long piece of hair in the salad so we sent it back - and I'm pretty sure they just took it out and replated it, added some more seaweed salad. Not much else was said between us and the waitress. Then came the rest of our order-they got the sweet shrimp wrong and gave us regular shrimp instead. When we told them it was wrong they insisted it was correct and then later told us they were out of sweet shrimp. Other than that everything else was okay-honestly it was good but the way that things unfolded just kind of put a damper on the entire meal. The specialty rolls (vary from $10-12) are different from the usual that you can find everywhere and the sashimi are generous pieces and taste as fresh as they can get in NYC. This restaurant was given an A by the health department, but read the actual violation and it says "Live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas." which confirms much of the coments here by reviewers mentioning the sushi chef picking his nose and people finding hair in their food -- these folks aren't clean. I also can't understand these ratings from the health department because to me, roaches, rodents, filth flies, etc. equals an automatic FAIL not an "A." To start w the chicken katsu itself is actually really good. The katsu had flavor and it is quite crispy. The miso soup that came w it taste like seafood miso soup but I like it. The salad I wish they can pack the salad sauce individually bc the sauce ain't enough. The shumei is delicious. The California roll the roll itself is big. For delivery, it is actually really fast despite it was raining. It took them like 15-25 mins to get here which is a plus. Overall, I do recommend to come here to get the lunch box. Came here on Christmas night with the fam and the food is fresh and superb! Price is decent. The rolls are definitely bigger and better than Tomo's in Elmhurst. I highly recommend their grilled squid for appetizer and they're more than happy to customize your roll/hand roll. My brother requested for eel and kani hand roll and the portion is beyond generous! And ofcourse, don't forget about the price. Even though it was $5 per hand roll, it was definitely worth it! My new go to spot when I'm craving Japanese food! Minus one star since they did not serve us complimentary hot saki. This 1 star review is not for the food. We all know this "chain" of Japanese restaurants is not the best in quality but certainly is a viable choice. This review is for the rudeness of the staff. I placed an order for almost $60 for pick up on a Wednesday night. Two of the items were Bento boxes with California rolls. We requested that the California rolls be replaced with another roll (inexpensive) since we didn't eat fake crab and avocado. All the other Sakura's and many other Japanese restaurants substitute with a minor up charge. I explained that I don't mind paying so long as we were able to eat it. The nasty woman told me that they so not substitute under any circumstances. When I got there to pick up my food I asked her to show me where it was posted in the menu or at the establishment. It wasn't!! She said that this is what the manager decided. I explained that things do not work that way. I really try to be considerate during Covid and tip far above what I would have tipped otherwise but I expect the same consideration in return. She finally agreed to change them for $6.00!!! That was the same or more than what a roll cost individually. I ended up with 3 California rolls (1 free because my order was over $30) that went to the garbage. What a waste and above all very disheartened. They also would not give me a receipt. Shady business practices. read more
