What a great treat! Stopped by here with the family a few weeks back and had a great dining experience. So we decided to pop in again, and they didn't disappoint. The atmosphere is welcoming, they have a hibachi grill "Ting Ting Flip" room for parties, a sushi bar, and a nice dining area. It's all a great use of space for a restaurant that isn't necessarily huge, but also does not feel cramped. There's mild background music playing, so you never feel awkward between chats. And the lighting is just right, without being too dim or annoyingly bright. I started with Crab Rangoons and a California Roll. The rangoons were crispy and delicious. The California roll was fresh and hit the spot. But the Basil Chicken really blew me away tonight. It came with a mushroom broth soup which was yummy and a simple Japanese salad with a delicious sesame dressing ~ perfect for that umami craving. The main course Basil Chicken was packed with vegetables, perfectly cooked chicken, and although it was mild, had a nice kick to it. On display mushrooms, red and green peppers, onion, eggplant, broccoli, and asparagus. Really a full serving of all the good vegetables you need! The basil was not overpowering, and complimented the rest of the dish with that basil pop of flavor. Definitely will come back to order this one again! read more

One of the reasons I started leaving reviews to help others make a decisions on what to get a different places with photos. I'm sure the Bangkok chicken is a popular dish but if I had seen what it looked like before I wouldn't have tried it. I'm not a fan of half the veggies and not a braised meat person. I've been going here for years and have had many excellent meals. The people working here are very nice and the quality and price of the food is excellent. I usually have the 2 roll lunch that includes soup and salad. The rolls have plenty of fish and tasted great. They also have an extensive list of non-sushi food on the menu although, I like the sushi so much, I always get that. Last time I went, a friend had pad thai and liked it very much. Review for sushi - I've found it to be a dependable place to get takeout and one of the few restaurants to offer uni on a regular basis. Uni (sea urchin gonads...that's a tough sell) can be sublime or they can be horrendous. It doesn't hurt to ask when the restaurant receives its seafood deliveries. Sake Bon's aesthetic, vibe and online ordering system are typical of a regular sushi/hibachi restaurant. What seemed out of the ordinary was when an employee called me no less than 5 minutes after placing an online order to inform me they ran out of one specific item. They apologized for the inconvenience and asked if I wanted to either substitute the item or have the cost refunded to my credit card. Nice customer service. The takeout service is excellent. I just think that they need to give a little bit more portions. That's all just like they do in the restaurant when you're there if you're paying that price if you know what I mean because when you're there they give you quite amount of food. Very disappointing Long day and just wanted a little something to eat. Came in very loud. No one at desk Finally some one came from kitchen. Asked if i was a takeout ? We love picking up from sake bon. I would say I pick up a couple times a month. It's very reliable. I usually order some sort of sushi and my husband always gets a side of hibachi rice and hibachi chicken. The prices are pretty much what they are anywhere else in the Capital district. We've eaten hibachi at the restaurant a few times and it's been a good experience but for the most part we just pick up. It's always fast and the order is always ready. Parking is a bit annoying. But that's not the restaurant's fault. But sometimes you do have to do a couple laps if you want a closer spot. If I'm eating there I don't mind but it's a little frustrating if you're just picking up to have to park really far away or they're not to be any parking spots at all. I wish that they had a spot for pickup. But that is out of the restaurants control as it's in a strip mall. But the restaurant itself is great the front desk is always very nice. I usually order online but I do like that they have the option to call in an order because sometimes I like to pay in cash when I get there. Always a good and reliable experience with the food and the staff. I highly recommend this place if you are in Schenectady. My parents have eaten at their Clifton Park location and said it is also very good. They are always busy it does not matter what day of the week it is or what time it is which I think says a lot of positive about the restaurant. read more

My DH and I spent the afternoon at Maybee Farms in Rotterdam Junction for an enjoyable afternoon of music. Looking through my Yelp app to see what restaurant was close by and open for an early dinner. I found Sake Bon which was highly recommended on Yelp and by my hairdresser. The restaurant is located in a small mini-mall in Schenectady. On the outside you wouldn't expect such a pretty place. It was only 5:30 in the afternoon so it was not busy at all. Inside were 3 very nicely decorated rooms one with hibachi tables one with sushi tables and bar area and one with regular dinner tables. We walked in and were greeted by a very nice server who asked us if we wanted a hibachi table where they cook right in front of you or a regular table. We chose a regular table as we were not with a larger group and the hibachi tables held seating for eight. Will definitely have to try that when we go with a group. Would be great fun when they cook right in front of you... Went to a place in Disney Epcot, Japan that did the same thing. I ordered a Mango Margarita which was quite potent and delicious and my DH ordered Tsingtao Beer which he enjoys every time we go to an Asian restaurant. As we were ready to eat our server took our order for dinner. I ordered Thai Mango Chicken $16 which was deliciously sweet with ripe mangos and tender chicken and also included Miso soup, salad dressed with creamy dressing and white rice. DH had Stir Fried Pad Thai $13, rice noodles stir-fried with egg, ground peanut, bean sprouts and scallions and chicken. It was a large portion so he got to take some home for lunch. His meal didnot include soup and salad I shared mine. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family for a gathering or just a romantic evening. This restaurant, located in a nondescript strip mall next to a tattoo parlor, tries and mostly succeeds in elevating cuisine in Rotterdam. Some things, such as TV sports in the background, the overly loud music or the fork at each setting, tells me that they are catering to their local clientele. Others, such as the chefs and the food, make me believe they are going to force that clientele to have good sushi, whether they want it or not. The server was attentive without being overbearing, and the very personable chefs presented each patron with a small complimentary amuse bouche, created individually as we sat at the bar. I received small maki created with sirimi salad and rolled in avocado strips. The woman next to me was treated to a small plate of sashimi arranged as flowers. The bar itself is half sushi bar with display cooler (photo) and half alcohol bar. The menu's sushi listings are not that extensive, but seem to be a little on the expensive side (for Rotterdam). The soup and salad were pleasant enough. I also ordered a couple of quick maki and a couple of nigiri. The plating was simple enough, if a bit haphazard (photo). The only complaint about the sushi was the tamago was an egg custard instead of grilled egg, but the taste was not bad. One minor irk: the wasabi was piped from a pastry bag. Others may find this design ornamental, but it just reminds me how far we are from fresh wasabi grated on a shark skin oroshigane. Remember, we're in Rotterdam. The one in New York. We were invited to a birthday dinner with some friends. We got there and the place was packed but in a good way. The hostess was very friendly knew the name of our reservation even though our friends weren't there yet and directed us to the bar. The place isn't huge but it's inviting and they were really good on the service aspect of the night all night long. We had a couple beers at the bar. I like the Japanese and Chinese beers which they have all the usuals. I had one of each lol. We had some sushi which was really good and the wasabi was delicious! Sorry no pics I forgot my phone trying to get there in time lol. And we had hibachi. I'm allergic to shellfish (I know I'm that guy ) and the chef was great there were no issues or even a chance there would be. All the food was spot on and the show was adequate. In his defense we were a loud group and talked the entire time so he did his best. I caught the zucchini first try too! Oh and the sake was flowing! I would definitely go again. After placing order I called to confirm the order. Everything seemed fine. I get to restaurant on time according to the app. I was told 5 more mins. I was patient I sat in my van and waited. I went back in at 7 mins what's going on‍ now their blaming the sushi guy like wtf. 5 more mins. Kool I went back in my van and 5 more mins. No food on table. Moving up here last year we are still finding out new places to eat. Sake Bon has great Sushi, the fish was fresh, as were the vegetables and the seasonings were very tasty. We opted for appetizers and sushi rolls. We had the Calamari (sadly a little chewy) Crab Rangoons, Gyoza and Thai Crab rolls. Highly recommend the Gyoza and Thai Crab Rolls. We also tried the Sake Bon roll, Rainbow Roll and Dragon Roll. All of them were delicious. We will be returning. If you haven't tried the Sushi here you should. read more

It's been almost 12 years since I found the need midway through dinner to jump online and warn people but tonight is one of those nights. I ordered the chicken satay, and let me say it is horrendous. Overcooked, dry, and stale, it was like something out of a thai prison movie. A thai chicken noodle soup was all oil. Not some oil, ALL OIL It was gross and disgusting and if health departments do their job this place should have a F rating and disclaimers at the door saying "enter at your own risk." I'd like to think of myself as an expert in Asian food, just from eating so much of it, so often . I have dined at dozens of Asian restaurants, specifically, sushi and hibachi when out of town or when I am too far from Sake Bon. However, in my opinion, nothing stacks up to Sake Bon. Everything we order from the edamame to the sushi and hibachi is always seasoned and prepared perfectly. Items are always fresh and cooked properly. The restaurant staff are incredibly attentive and kind. Susan, who is a humble, appreciative, gracious owner, is always around, working side by side with her team. We always receive a warm welcome and many times a kind gesture with a courtesy drink or dessert for our kids . I can't say enough about this establishment because they always make every dining experience a perfect one. Hats off to Susan for having one of the best restaurants around. BTW - if you like oysters they are a must here!! Incredible flavor, dressed with the perfect combination of sauces and toppings (a dab of seaweed and fish roe/tobiko on each). My first time here with my girl friend but this was her go to place. At first driving here I was like I barely drive to schenecrady but taking a chance it was a very well experienced. The owner was very friendly she chat with us because my friend is a regular here. Went the other night for hibachi with a party of 5 plus my 11 month old. The food was fantastic and the service was good. I always tip service people unless the service was atrocious, but while looking at the menu I noticed it clearly stated at the bottom of the page under the hibachi dinner section that 10% gratuity was included for party's of 2 or more. When the check came ($156) one person in my party asked how we should handle the tip and I remembered it saying that on the menu about it being included so I mentioned it and we all thought everything was covered. I went to change my infants diaper in the bathroom and met my party outside. They informed me that while I was in the bathroom a server had chased them down outside and yelled at them about not leaving a tip. My poor grandmother was mortified and told them it said in the menu it was included. The server called her a liar and demanded a 10% tip. We gave the tip and left but doubt we will be back again. I also work in the service industry as a hairdresser and have been stuffed a tip many times, I would never DREAM of chasing a client for a tip, let alone demand a certain percent! I have never been to a more fun Hibachi ever! I walked in on a busy Friday night, no reservations, and was told at first I could eat at the restaurant. But hibachi was booked. I was disappointed. But totally okay with it. The about two minutes later someone cancelled, and the hostess came right up and asked me if I wanted to go right now. They offer noodles and rice. Excellent food, the sushi was delicious and the rock shrimp was perfectly cooked. I had the General Tso's chicken and it was amazing without being too spicy (probably a bit spicier than your average take out option but not overpowering. Watch out for those red peppers though!).
