Coffee is simply awful. Tastes burnt and watered down; not an easy task. The food isn't bad, but not quite worth the hefty price tag it comes with. Unfortunately you'll find few other options as it regards the charges in an airport. Recommend ordering tea; it's hard to muck up boiled water. First time seeing and dining at one of these United themed restaurants. Overall it was a good experience. The burger was juicy although a bit overcooked. French fries solid. The menu looked very interesting for airport food but didn't get anything extravagant as those items were 25$+, many being over $30. The stand out for me was the service. The staff here was excellent and made me feel good. In an airport setting after a long week this was a relief. If you only care about the food, get a sandwich somewhere else cheaper. If you can expense it, it may be worth the splurge for the service. read more

OK, so it's an airport restaurant (United Terminal). The fancy shmancy iPad ordering device didn't work. The tap got stuck before me while the bartender was elsewhere and flooded the bar. My prime hamburger disintegrated in my hands because the bun was dry. The bartenders could not have been more inattentive had they been working in Times Square during the tourist season. First of all, everything in the Newark airport costs too much. With the exchange rate it was awful to be a Canadian in that airport. Now, I admit, I could have gone a smidge cheaper than Saison, but not by much. Someone who worked at the bar told me that the same guy owns everything, which would explain a lot! I got macaroni and cheese, which was pretty good. It had better flavour than some, but more bland than what I make at home. (From scratch, obvi!) Anyhow, it was the only thing I felt like getting that was under $20. The coffee was decent. Strong enough for me, which is something. The service was appallingly slow at the bar, though. They were only moderately busy. Maybe it was the cranky lady next to me? Did they want to avoid her? Perhaps. I mean she *really* was cranky. Hey.. not their fault that she's grumpy, but I wanted cream and got milk. I wanted sugar and got... none. After I asked *twice*. I know I was a low-dollar ticket, but come on, people. :( So this place gets a two because of the totally substandard service, particularly egregious at those prices. Terrible service. I ordered on the iPad on the table, and was brought a drink promptly but it took 35 minutes for someone to come and tell me that the didn't have what I ordered, by which time I was getting anxious to leave for the gate. I substituted a salad which still took another 5-10 mins and I was leaving as it arrived. I very quickly ate it and the food actually wasn't bad, but can't recommend this place unless you have a couple of hours to kill and aren't hungry when you go in! Had the steak and eggs and surprisingly it was delicious! It was tender, cooked to order (rare) and served quickly. Probably some of the best red meat I've had in a long while. If this was in my neighborhood, I'd come often. Whenever I needed a human, they were prompt and courteous. I'm not a fan of the iPad ordering, but it was a nice mirror as I sat alone at the bar. Could order as soon as I wanted because of the iPads. I liked that. Paid for the food in advance like a fast food joint which I found odd for a nice sit down place. The part I thought was wrong was it suggests/includes tip before you receive any service. I just put it at zero and tipped in cash. I had the hanger steak which looked just like the image from the iPad. It was prepared well and quite tasty. It appears Yelp is becoming more and more unreliable. It's a pretty safe assumption that it is becoming a sell out.. Money and corruption is driving positive vs negative reviews. With that said, I have NO IDEA how Saison has such a low score. Maybe jet lag, maybe a bad day for patrons, maybe a bad day for staff. Regardless, I can honestly tell you my experience was outstanding. I had the rueben burger and it was absolutely OUTSTANDING. Good enough to stain my shirt and not care. Hot, fresh, tasty and big! My waiter Raul was also fantastic, taking the time to assist, answer questions and make really honest recommendations that did not disappoint. Like most people at the airport you just wanna grab some decent food but most importantly have that food quickly. Saison did this well. I ordered deviled eggs, shrimp cocktail and raw clams. The food was OK at best and that's why I give it a 3 only. The deviled eggs were plain with a splash of mustard in the yolk. I'd compare it to a hard boiled egg with a side of mustard. The shrimp cocktail made it up due to colossal size and the excellent cocktail sauce. These were good. Don't get the clams. Period. read more

Although the prices are expensive - I paid $16-18 I believe for an egg, cheese and bacon on a brioche bun with fries and salad side. This was the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had in my 6 years in nyc. Thick cut bacon and chipotle mayo made the sandwich stand out and the portion was huge, atleast 2x the average deli egg on a roll. Would recommend this place atleast for breakfast. read more

After I spent $50 on a burger (which I asked for medium and came out well done) & beer, they told my fiancée she couldn't order a beer & standalone side of fries without getting an entree. Ricky our server was very helpful and warm offering extra assistance and running our drink orders to the bar prior to us completing our food order. Excellent food, mediocre service. So I had a few hours to kill and decided their menu looked enticing. I ordered the French onion soup, dry aged bone in ribeye with marrow butter and sautéed mushrooms. The French onion soup was outstanding. Expertly browned cheese, delicious bread, wonderful beef stock and hearty onions. A true embodiment of the essence of French onion soup. The ribeye was excellent, as good as I've had at Flemings or capital grill. Not the absolute top tier but amazing considering I was sitting in an airport. Oh and it was so tender my plastic fake knife sliced it like butter. It came with a watercress salad (ok) and basil pesto pine nuts that I skipped. I had sautéed mushrooms with it as a side and there were tons of shiitake and oyster to round out the buttons. Very nice mix of mushrooms. The service on the other hand was inferior. Really it was unacceptable for the meal. I ordered on the iPad and swiped at the default 18%, I should have reduced it. The tea took forever. I was well into my soup when it came. My water and tea went empty twice in the meal and the second time it took so long I almost got up to get my own refill. The service was what I would expect at ihop where young servers go to train, not somewhere that's serving dry aged beef. Next time I'll eat at the bar so I can penetrate the bartenders soul with my eyes if my glass runs empty. read more

Food was good but must say service sucked!! First of all you are somewhat obligated to put in a "tip" as you place your order! No cash option afterwards- so now like I did, gave a 20% tip (so nobody spits in my food while they prepare it) then get horrible service where I have to ask for a refill on water 2x's and still nothing, making me get up and serve myself!! There are 4, yes FOUR FRN PPL eating next to the two of us. Ridiculous how they operate. If they worked for a tip I'm sure it would be better! The croque madame was on good bread and the bechamel was really tasty. It was a little heavy, so I would highly recommend the salad over the fries. Context is essential. Much the same a well done French cafe would seem that much better in lower Manhattan as compared to on the Champs Élysées, so too would you be even more surprised to find that in one of our busiest airports (and one that I frequent often). Saison is in terminal C in the space that had been Gallagher's steak house for many years, and a wine cellar replies the sides of beef that were dry agog for display. The quick take - food was excellent, concept could be good but needs refinement, and as a result service could improve. Outside the airport I'd give this three stars with the 4th coming as a sort of 'hazardous duty award' anywhere you have to serve your patrons nice steaks with plastic knives. Fortunately the steak I had - the 16 oz NY strip cooked perfectly warm and rare with nice seasoning and char - was tender enough that I only snapped one knife. (No charge for another!). I had a side salad and excellent table bread for the meal. Simple, all nicely prepared. The beer selection was very good. Some interesting draughts including Omegang Witte, but the real charm (and alas cost) is in the Belgian beer bottle list. I had one each of Cuvee de Jacobins Rouge (an unusual favorite of mine - a Flemish sour beer) and a St Augustinus ABT quad abbey ale. How could one go wrong? So, the drawback... It is actually a by product of a good idea. iPad menus are on each table. You can see everything, have great descriptions, place your order yourself once you figure out a few tricks, and even pay right then. Then they will bring you meal, drinks and recipe all at once. A boon for someone wanting to get a great meal before a grueling 14 hour economy class ride to India (just an example;) ). The downside is that the staff has not figured out how to use it well yet. (From reading past reviews it seems things have improved a bit, but 6 months in you'd expect more!). They still have what seems to be just as many servers. So they should follow a standard plan - come help you with you menu at first, make sure your order is placed promptly and delivered quickly, and follow up to see if you want anything else. All I. All, I will be coming back. Not cheap, not perfect, but the food and beer was really good! Summary - 4 star food, 2 star service but in an airport so better than a lot of other options. Management - please pay attention and figure out how to improve the service! We need good airport options.... read more

The food here is excellent so the two stars are for the terrible customer service. Like all of the restaurants at Newark airport you must order through the iPad. OK, I have no problem with that, but the waiters are nothing more than food runners. If you have any special requests or some extra whatever, there is no way to communicate that on the app. And good luck trying to flag down the wait staff. You can't even get a water refill. I don't expect fawning Service but for an $80 tab for just one person, I do expect the basics. read more

Sitting in the restaurant right now. Table top iPad - BOLTED to the middle of the table - are an awful idea. iPads replace your menu and serve as a Square-like credit card payment system. They take up table space and just sit there obnoxiously after you order. You've got to complete and pay for your order (and tip!) before they'll even bring you a pre-dinner beer or drink! So don't even think about ordering a drink while you continue to browse the menu. No sir. At least my glass of Cabernet is good. Entree isn't out yet but at this point I could care less how the overpriced food tastes.... I'm not coming back. Food came. I just raised my ranking from one stars to two. Chicken dish with steamed carrots was very good. Side dish of mashed potatoes was bland. Overall, iPad concept bad, food hit and miss, prices high, wine good, waiter good. Poor service and bland, overpriced food. I know you can't expect much from an airport restaurant in terms of prices, but damn was my bagel impossible to bite through and my potatoes oddly tasted sweet. I originally sat at the bar. After 5 minutes of sitting there the bartender finally stopped talking to his co workers (no one was in the restaurant besides myself at that point) to come tell me no one is allowed to sit at the bar until after 6am. I've never been to this airport so I had no idea you ordered food off the iPad at the table; it appeared to just be something for games to pass the time. I would expect to be greeted by a server and be instructed as to how food ordering works at the restaurant. $20 for a soda, breakfast sandwich (which weirdly had a bunch of raw greens without any dressing), and potatoes. Most food in airports will be expensive, but try to find one with tastier food and better service! read more

But really, you're trapped in Newark and all you have starring back is a sea of iPads (50% of which at our table didn't work).
