This was one of the better airport meals I have ever had! It was fate that brought me here, otherwise I would have never ingested this fine French Dip. Our flight from the day before was cancelled and when we got ready to board they called me and my buddies name to approach the desk. They needed to fly some pilots and other staff to my layover in Houston so they offered us a later direct flight to Memphis that put us getting home only 2 hours later. They offered us $45 meal vouchers and $1000 in flight credit. Hell yes! Sign me up!! That put us hanging out at the airport for about 6 hours before our flight. We walked the entire terminal and looked at every menu. This was the one we decided on. Good choice! It well decorated and half of the seating is inside and the other half is like an airport patio. We sat on the patio. You order through your phone and they bring it to you based on your seat. I thought it would be poor service, but I was wrong. We were actually well taken care of. All in all one of the best meals I have had in an airport. Bread was good, toasted well but not too crunchy the Au Jus could not handle. I expect to be ripped off when dining at the airport but this place was RIDICULOUS!! To their credit, the restaurant was clean but, that's the only good thing about it. I ordered the Chicken Paillard salad. The "chicken" was well seasoned BUT it was like a hard little hockey puck hiding under a huge mound of lettuce. My husband got a Niçoise salad for almost $34. He had a large portion of tuna but it was CANNED!!!! I'm a New Yorker so, I'm used to pricey restaurants. But, I have never gotten a Niçose salad with canned tuna!! HORRIBLE!! Also, I've gotten fresh seared tuna for the same price or for $1- $2 more. The one time in the past that I had gotten canned tuna was at a greasy spoon diner. I don't know who the manager of Saison is but, he or she should be ASHAMED of themselves. As for the service, no one came by to see if we wanted more of our $5.50 club soda. Saison is located in Terminal C of EWR Airport. I had a delicious breakfast here while I waited for my flight to Bermuda in April. Honestly, my expectations were low, because I had breakfast at one of the restaurants at JFK a couple of years ago, and it absolutely sucked, but this one was actually very impressive. The food was shockingly good for an airport terminal. Everything tasted fresh, arrived hot, and had excellent flavor. It completely outperformed the usual bland, overpriced airport fare. Astonishingly bad! The bartender was polite, quick, and made a good drink. The kitchen took forever to make a French Onion soup and a Steak Frittes. The first soup served was cold and was served with a teaspoon. I told the bartender honestly what was wrong, and she said "I try, but there's nothing I can do." She brought me a free second soup which was at least hot. The restaurant was empty. The kitchen was full of men visibly doing nothing, talking with one another and shuffling around. I worked in busy efficient commercial kitchens for years. This place is an absolute disaster. Everyone in the kitchen should be fired tomorrow, and the manager should go next. This level of catastrophic incompetence is a management failure, not a staff failure. Some fool hired people with no work ethic who can't cook, filled the kitchen with them, and then walked away. I assume this place pays nothing and so attracts the worst possible staff in the kitchen. Again, I worked in restaurants for years. I know. During a four hour layover at Newark airport I stopped in this airport French bistro when I saw it had a Croque Madame on the menu. Grabbed it to go to eat at a nearby lounge. The staff was so wonderfully friendly and kind it made a long travel day get off to a good start. The croque madame was wonderful. I was very surprised for an airport breakfast! The greens were super fresh with just a light lemon vinaigrette dressing and the egg on top of the sandwich was perfectly cooked. Had I not been eating out of a plastic to go container I would have thought I was at First Watch. Of course airport prices took one star away! If you're in terminal C at Newark look for Saison's! This is the only negative Yelp review I've ever written, and unfortunately Saison at Newark Airport earned it. The food itself wasn't bad. That's the only neutral thing I can say. The service, however, was genuinely horrendous. Incredibly slow, disorganized, and riddled with mistakes. Multiple items were brought out incorrectly, requests were missed, and there was no sense of urgency or accountability at any point. What makes it worse is the system: you're required to pay for your food and tip before a waiter even comes to your table. After experiencing the service, it's very clear why. Once payment and tip are secured upfront, the level of care drops off a cliff. I understand airport dining has limitations, but this wasn't about being busy. It was about a broken service model that leaves customers stuck after they've already paid. I don't write negative reviews lightly, but this experience was bad enough to warrant one. Unfortunately, you are able to capitalize off of unsuspecting tourists, who you ignore or talk to with disgust in your voice when they stop by for a bite to eat. Your staff should all be fired. This is a great place for breakfast. Much better than the average airport restaurant. Great menu and quick service, using the order-at-table, or from the friendly waitstaff. The food was great! This is the best food in Newark airport. I fly about once a month and always walk over from other areas of terminal C to eat here. Usually, I'll get a croque madame but today I tried the mussels and they were very good, in fact better than most non airport terminal mussels I've eaten. And the fries were crispy and very French. It's rare to find French restaurants from where I'm from, so I was super pleasantly surprised to find a super cute French cafe right by my gate playing French music and serving authentic French dishes. Here's what I tried: Salmon: this was oh so perfectly pan-fried, and the meat was tender while having the most crispy and thinly fried skin on top. However, for some reason, this dish was also paired with a bed of BBQ beans, which added a strange American touch to an otherwise perfect dish. Croque madame: I've always been a fan of this unique French breakfast item, and I was so excited to see that this was available during breakfast! The egg was perfectly fried, and I loved how it was paired with a perfectly toasted piece of bread, ham and cheese. Also comes with complimentary salad, as well as fresh fruit for an additional add on. Definitely a super cute place with high quality food that's worth stopping by if you have some time before your flight. My husband had the Cobb salad and said the lettuce seemed old. Daughter liked her big sandwich and the fries were crispy and seasoned well. I didn't take a pic because there's already one. I was hoping the reviews were an "airport 2.5" rather than an actual 2.5, but no. The food here was on the awful side of mediocre, unpleasant enough that I would rather not describe it. The drinks were only slightly better--my aperol spritz was remarkably not refreshing. The hostess and server were kind, but the server was not the most attentive--he brought us empty water glasses but no water until we asked. The environment is nice though, with charging stations at each booth, and relatively quiet, so if you need a place to camp for a minute this could be it. However, be prepared to pay for it with an outsized check. I think we spent around $150 on 2 drinks, a French dip sandwich, and a couple of sides. Tips if you decide to eat here anyway: - Order on 1 check using the QR code so your food has a chance of arriving at the same time - Order less than you think you want to eat (like maybe share a few appetizers or one entree) - Ask to sit in the back with a view of the planes; up front, the restaurant seemed pretty crowded, but it was quiet and pleasant in the back - If you want a drink, walk a couple hundred feet to the Proof Whiskey Oasis where you can just order a good whiskey without worrying about getting an unpleasant version of a cocktail It's interesting that this restaurant seems to share a kitchen with Classified, the United Airline's invite-only "speakeasy" (either Classified is not as desirable as advertised or they send the good food back that way instead of to Saison). We had United vouchers for a cancelled flight and were already not in a great space so we probably had chips on our shoulder but even with that the service was great for us. We were in very early in the morning so we idid not have the opportunity to eat anything and we were getting ready to board a plane for about 6 hours. We had to get something to eat.
