After hearing so many glowing recommendations, this was a disappointing Father's Day brunch. My husband ordered the brisket and eggs breakfast and enjoyed it. The brisket was flavorful, the grits were good, and he substituted a biscuit for toast. Oddly, the biscuit was served completely plain. When I asked a staff member if it normally came with butter or jam, they looked genuinely confused by the question. I eventually just asked for jam, but it felt like a strange interaction. I ordered the Brisket Benedict and the Monte Cristo. The Benedict looked great when it arrived, but one poached egg was perfectly runny while the other was significantly overcooked with a mostly solid yolk. The brisket was dry, the collard greens underneath were dry, and there wasn't enough hollandaise to compensate. The breakfast potatoes were crispy and fine, but nothing memorable. The Monte Cristo was the biggest letdown. When I order a Monte Cristo, I expect something rich, savory, and indulgent. This version was made with bland white bread, the bacon was very soft, and the sandwich lacked the flavor and texture that make a Monte Cristo worth ordering. It looked better than it tasted. Service was pleasant, but no one checked on our table after the food arrived, despite the restaurant not being very busy. Had someone stopped by, I would have mentioned the overcooked egg. Overall, one good dish out of three isn't enough to make me want to return. Based on this visit, I'd give it 3 stars. read more

Hmmmm. I don't even know where to begin. We weren't even that hungry. But the hand crafted drinks. The sauces. The thought around different menu items (like White BBQ sauce) all being put together on one plate was too appealing to pass on by. My only complaint was the need to have Tums after the meal -- it was loaded as a meal could get, and worth every bite! To add - the service was fantastic. They exchanged a drink my hubby didn't like at all for another, and they really got it right the second time. We've been craving BBQ for a while, so we finally checked this place out -- and man, it was so good! The staff were awesome and super friendly. We got the brisket, pulled pork, and ribs, which came with collard greens, pickled onions, and pickled cucumbers. You get your choice of biscuit or Texas toast, and we added a side of mac n cheese (highly recommend). The meat was crazy tender and full of flavor. Brisket was decent with good sauce options including beef tallow. Sides were disappointing. Not traditional greens. They were pickled for some reason. Not pictured but also ordered macaroni and cheese which also for some reason came with chopped up pickles that were not on the menu. If you can tell, I don't like pickled things. We followed it up with their delicious shrimp and grits served with andouille, tomato gravy and added a fried egg on top. Superb! This was our second brunch stop of our weekend in Boise, and this was also a great choice. Gavin was our bartender, and he gave us perfect service, while Chris was the server on duty, and he helped out with food recommendations, city recommendation, and everything in between. I had the Naked Sunbather Brown beer, and wife had a French 75, and both were worthy starts to the Sunday. For food, Chris recommended the Brisket Benedict after I gave him my laundry list of possibilities and it didn't disappoint. One thing I will say. All of the ingredients tasted high quality, but the brisket itself was a game changer. Tasted like it was cooked with extreme care. Wife had the shrimp and grits and loved the dish. The atmosphere was nice and energetic. No TV on for sports, but that is not really the experience at this place. We sat at the bar, but the table experience looked quality too. I spaced on taking additional pics of the restaurant, so sorry about that, but have included two pics of our food. The restaurant is right on 8th, so you are in the heart of everything post-meal. The hush puppies were golden perfection, crispy outside, soft inside and not spicy at all even with the jalapeño pieces inside. But the star was the Gridiron Burger: brisket ground in-house, stacked with grilled onion, cheese, their house-made pickles and bacon jam. Juicy, savory, and totally unforgettable. Following up from my last review (which was focused more on brunch), I wanted to give an update here on how we liked their dinner menu. We went here for our anniversary dinner and had the mac and cheese with pulled pork, PBR plate, duck with spätzle, and brisket ends for the side. Overall, really enjoyed the food, especially the duck and brisket ends. The spätzle was okay, but that wasn't the star of the dish so it's fine. The brisket ends were delicious as always. The food was good overall but the prices were pretty high for the portion sizes. This rating is just for the food. The brisket had good sauces. The pickled vegetables were great to cut the fat because the pieces were very fatty. The Mac and cheese was a decent size overall. It was on the Guy Fieri show... diners and dives? The hush puppies are 5 starts all the way! The teenie craft cocktail was ... well... teeny. But tasty! I had the shrimp and grits which is very good, a little spicy, but they really need to pony up a little plate for the tails. Otherwise they end up back in the dish. You can smell this restaurant from a mile away, in the best way. The smoker out front smells incredible! They have an amazing menu with great upscale BBQ options. Finally had a chance to try this place out this past week for lunch. Walking up the first thing that gets you entranced and wanting come in is that beautiful smell of cooked meats out from on their massive smoker. Inside and out wide open seating and the wait staff here were awesome and super friendly. I shouldn't say staff because it was only 1 guy that was there and he was doing it all. For food we started with the Louisiana dry rub wings served Alabama white sauce for dipping. These wings were perfectly executed and the white OMG delicious. You rarely see that on a menu out west so kuddos to you for bringing it out here. Burger was delicious! It had Bacon Jam, Grilled Onions, House Pickles, Special Sauce, Cheddar Cheese...my wife had the BLEU BRISKET Sandwich with Pickled Red Onions, Horseradish Gorgonzola Cream, Arugula. We both had fries and loved the hand cut homemade care that went into these. Plus the fry sauce was amazing! For those of you don't know this is an amazing compliment to dip your fries into as well as is great on burgers as well. Drinks were awesome and loved the selection of handmade craft cocktails. Great looking bbq in the photos, but came up underwhelming. Unfortunately going back through the photos everything seems to be 3 to 6 years old, and I'd say things have changed a bit. Starting off with Cocktails, nice selection of drinks and liquers. I got a bourbon based cocktail, can't remember what it was called, but was very good, nice big ice cube. Enjoyed this for sure. We got a Mac and cheese and wings to start. Wings were pretty good, nice crisp. Dry rub tasted like a basic Cajun seasoning of paprika, cayenne, some sugar etc. Not bad, but nothing special. The mac and cheese was alright but underwhelming. Cavatappi noodles with a sauce pretty reminiscent of easy mac, especially in texture and color. No real complexity to the cheese flavor like an aged cheddar or something along those lines. The pictures show a cast iron dish with a breadcrumb topping but neither of those are present today. Certainly have had worse mac and cheese, but this was just mediocre. Brisket sandwich was fairly disappointing. Came on a ciabatta like roll, soft good texture for brisket. Much better choice than a hard French type bread which I've had on a brisket sandwich in the past, so good move there. The amount of brisket was minimal, maybe 1/4 lb, but I'd be hard pressed to say it was really even that much. Texture was as expected with brisket, tender, well cooked. The worst part though was really the fake liquid smoke flavor. If you've ever used liquid smoke, it has a very distinct and particular flavor and that was very present on this brisket. I wish I took a close up photo on the brisket but there was no smoke ring on the meat like you see in a lot of the other photos, and I really would question whether this was ever smoked at all. It definitely looks like from old photos that at some point meat was smoked (years ago? Who knows?). There was a smoker outside with smoke going, wood stacked up. But it just didn't taste or look like this brisket was smoked unfortunately. Perhaps something was wrong the day I was there (Sunday 9/4). But the only other recent photo of brisket also looks like it's lacking a smoke ring and at least one other reviewer mentioned a liquid smoke taste. Other than that, the fries were great. The rest of the experience was fine. Good service. Good drinks. Brisket was certainly edible, but food was mostly mediocre overall. The question of smoke has me questioning if I'll ever return. If the owner posts some photos of actual brisket on the smoker and some information on their smoking process, I'll update and add a star back to my review. read more

We've been meaning to go here for awhile, but have put it off, mostly due to me. I eat meat, but it's not really my focus and this place is pretty meat focused. It's kind of their thing...smoked meat. My husband, on the other hand, definitely likes his meats, so there we were. I had the Cornbread Panzanella salad, which was so much better than I thought it would be! The flavors really came together for me in this salad, and would highly recommend it. My husband kept stealing bites off my plate, which says a lot. He, of course, ordered the dry-rubbed wings, which he thoroughly enjoyed, then we ordered the soup, which was "brisket chowder". Neither of us was a fan of this one, even though the brisket was good, it was sitting in a "soup" of what tasted and looked like a dark gravy. Nobody wants to eat that much gravy, but it wasn't just that, the flavor was just a bit off for us. Place was busy, as usual, and it's a nice place all around, and the servers were pleasant enough. It's a good place to hit once in awhile, but won't be a regular on our list, although I would like to try their shrimp and grits, or a taco, if they put that back on the menu...or on special? We barely made the time cut off for Saturday brunch and we were looking forward to trying the Monte Cristo after seeing it featured on Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives. We sat on the patio which was beautiful in the sunny spring weather, but after we got water and placed our order we never saw the waiter again. Our water was never refilled, and we weren't really "checked on" at all. A little disappointed, especially with the prices I expected better service. They were not super busy either, I have no idea why our server was doing. The brisket was GREAT, we ordered it as a side to try. A certain favorite food celebrity of mine did a show here recently and he's never lead me astray- EVER. The mayor of flavortown chose well and thank goodness this place now takes reservations. I don't know why this place isn't more busy on a Friday night- other than the fact that it's surrounded by all the other restaurants too. It's definitely the best one in that area that we've been too- and the only recent one we've already decided we will come back to and bring friends. Pictures are the poutine, the Dirty Bird Sandwich and The Ploughmans platter. All fantastic. I don't usually like smoked beef I don't make- BUT- I really liked the beef nuggets on the poutine and it was as good as my own brisket - and if you've ever had my brisket- that's a big compliment. We are not unlike some of the other reviews posted here. Walked by here several times in the past, but never during the 'hungry' moments, even though the smell of the BBQ taking place right out side was oh so tempting. I, myself, am not a person who orders brisket, but my wife and I both opted to give it a try. What a mouth watering experience. The meat literally melted in the mouth it was so tender. I also loved the BBQ and Mustard sauces they gave as a side dipping option. Kudos to the person smoking this to perfection. The cornbread amused me. I kept calling it cornbread toast, as I have never seen it served in a shape that resembled a slice of toast. Dip it in the garlic butter they give you and, oh my, heavenly taste. If you like to partake of the spirits, I can attest that the Old Fashioned (something I never tried before), and the wife's choice of Devil in Mexico, were both very good 'strong' choices. Well made, and served with the large cube of ice to eliminate the water-down effect. Will definitely come back again, and if it's cooler, will love to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and the smell of the smokey bbq! read more

I love SLG, and I've been coming here for years. Usually, I will ask one of the servers to let the kitchen decide and I get surprised every time. 99% of the time I have a wonderful meal and wonderful service, but today was our 1%. I will be honest and say that 100% of this experience could have been improved if the service had been present, but ultimately the absence of a server at our table compounded the issue. My surprise dish, the monte cristo, arrived, and on my first bite I immediately recognized that the flavors did not work well together. My wife took a bite and also recognized it was a bit overcomplicated. Being as hungry as I was, I managed to get through half of the sandwich, but it was a firm stopping point when I realized that the cheeses were throwing the balance off significantly. I waited for the server to come back, but nothing. I was waiting for a natural opportunity to give feedback about how the meal was, but the server was nowhere. My wife ate her entire meal as my plate went untouched and got cold. After my wife had finished, we were starting to get impatient because the server wasn't even coming out for a check, and it had been 25 minutes at this point. My wife finally went in from the patio to ask for the check, and when the server finally came out, she never once asked if we enjoyed our meal. In a world where too many people go out of their way to be mean, I prefer when servers ask for feedback, because it provides an opportunity to objectively say those things in the moment. Unfortunately, if the opportunity is missed, then the next option is to write a review about how an opportunity could be improved. I will acknowledge that I'm gambling when I order like this, but like I said earlier, 99% of what I've ordered over dozens of trips over years of menu changes have been phenomenal. The kitchen is wonderful, but I don't think that being neglected from a server is a good way to improve upon a solid foundation. Next time I go, I will probably just order what I want and set myself for different expectations read more

This upscale BBQ joint has some of the best briskets in Boise! They smoke it right out front and you can smell the BBQ goodness from just walking by. The outdoor seating is great for brunch or lunch on warmer days with great views of the Capitol building. I love coming here for Brunch and getting their Brisket Benedict and a Mimosa carafe. Saint Lawerence is my go-to special occasion spot-- Valentines, Birthday Dinners, and family visiting; I just love bonding with friends and family over SLG's food and drinks. You have to get the brisket when you come here but other than that the poutine and seasonal salads are also really good! One thing that I used to always order that I don't think they offer anymore was their Bone marrow and toast that came with a shot of whiskey. It was so buttery and delicious plus that last bone marrow shot was such a show! The overall vibe of the place and the people who work there is what makes this a 5-star spot. As mentioned before, the outdoor seating has amazing views but also the inside decor is a curated dark modern-American style. The staff seems seasoned, most of them giving off that "I did my time. You know, I've been meaning to try this place for a long time (like years). Walk by all the time and it always smells amazing with the large smoker out front near the sidewalk. Finally coworker and I decided to pull the trigger and stop by for lunch one day. Soup of the day was brisket chili, ok now we are talkin. Soup and side salad was $10 which sounded like a good lunch deal. The hope was the chili would feature more than a couple chunks of brisket. Well turns out the chili was more like a bowl of brisket with a little chili sauce on top. It was amazing! Brisket was very tender and flavorful, well smoked. It was not busy and there were only 4 other tables full, but it took well over an hour before our two brunch entrées were prepared and because of that we were unable to dine in the restaurant and had to get our order to go. Brunch items typically don't travel well, and these did not. We ordered the Benedict and at $17 I had expected to be blown away, but was disappointed to find the biscuit was not homemade and the egg was hard boiled. The meat was good, but sparse. I seriously love this place. We were welcomed in on a late Monday night. SO FREAKING PLEASED to see they serve food until 10 during the week.
