Sailors will be my new go to auto shop, special thank you to William, first mechanic I've had who wants to help me and not just rack up my bill. I was told by a euro shop my car needed a new engine and quoted me 15-20k, William told me he didn't see why they couldn't fix it and sure enough he was able to fix it himself and saved me a lot of money. I wanted to like this place because the reviews were good but that wasn't my experience. I brought my car in to be looked at for a rattling noise, and I was told that I needed to replace my starter. Since it was replaced 10 months prior, it was under warranty. Instead of paying what I was quoted at Sailors ($800) to replace it, I decided to take it to where it was still under warranty so I could get it fixed for free. When I informed Kipp that I would be doing that, he profusely tried to talk both me and my boyfriend out of it. When I sent my boyfriend to pick the car up from Kipp and pay for the service of looking at it, he tried to charge over double the price he'd originally told me. When my boyfriend told him that was not right, he simply dropped it back down to the original price with no explanation. And all of this is to say that there was nothing wrong with the starter all along. My engine needed to be replaced. I'd like to think that these were honest mistakes, but I cannot afford an $800 honest mistake, unfortunately. read more

I would highly suggest not taking your car here. Worst service in my life and charged a undisclosed ridiculous fee for just taking my car in to be looked at (nothing even was fixed). Came in just for my brakes to be looked at and they instead did a full inspection of the car and charged me $50 without telling me there was a fee before. I had the BEST experience at Sailors of any other car service center in KC Metro! They patiently listened about the issues I was having with my vehicle, troubleshooted, and came up with a solution of repairing the exhaust manifold instead of replacing it, saving me money and the part from the landfill-- Win Win! Look up "Above & Beyond" and you'll see Kip Sailor and Sailor's Automotive. Brought my auto in, seemingly good to go with my insurance company...alas NOT the case. It was Kip Sailor, NOT my insurance company, who patiently unknotted the mess and made sure I was 200% satisfied with everything. Still in awe of the whole experience, best I've had in auto repair. Normally it's a hassle at best with logistics, but Mr. Sailor went above and beyond adjusting their schedule to jibe with not only mine but my insurance company's timeline. All of the nice fellas at Sailor's were more than helpful/polite and downright kind. And my car is better than before!!! I will use no other auto repair shop in KC again. They helped me with my rusty license plate bolts (for no charge since it seemed that it was a very quick job), and went above and beyond, equipping me with new bolts and some spray that will keep them from rusting again. Saved me 800 dollars! I took my Honda in to have them check out the belt in the engine because the A/C had locked up the engine and my car would shut off while driving. (I'm trying to drive this Honda into the ground with paying as little as possible.) When I found out the cost is going to be 900+ to replace the A/C I start thinking of buying an used car instead of fixing this one. But while I'm pondering my options I get a call back from Kip at Sailors saying that even though there is no Honda part on the market, he was doing some research and measuring the dimensions of the engine and found a belt from a different company that would be able to bypass the A/C unit and forgoing the 900 dollar cost. He ordered the belt and placed it in my car for just over 100 dollars. Everything works awesome, except the AC that I didn't want to pay for! These guys are the real deal. read more

IF YOU WANT TO GET SCAMMED, you have come to the right place! That might sound like an exaggeration, but trust me when I tell you: if i didnt know any better, I would have been scammed so hard by these people. Let me start from the top: My vehicle had a coolant leak that was plainly obvious when you opened up the hood. It was near the thermostat housing: there was a bolt that was loose and coolant leaking from a hose connected to the housing. Now, I am by no means a mechanic, but I have done basic maintenance on my vehicle (oil changes, spark plugs, air filter, etc). I attempted to repair this leak, however I did not have the tools to do it. That is when i decided to contact Sailors Auto. I call them up, and I ask them if they have availability to look at my vehicle. I am a brand new customer to them, and so they just say "yep bring it tomorrow!". Red flag number 1. I follow up and ask them if they need to know what the vehicle is, what the problem is, what my name is??? Once I probe, then they start asking me those questions. Then I started to explain what the problem is and before I finished my sentence he was like "yea i already know whats wrong with your vehicle". Im thinking "ok cool, either this guy is the best freaking mechanic ever or he just BSed me." So, despite that, I come in and I meet I believe the owner, Kip. I perceived him to be a nice older gentleman, someone who I could trust. He was asking me about my background etc while taking down the important information that should have been collected on the phone call, but hey its ok, who needs to get to work at 9am? Not me apparently. So, I ask him a timeline, he says: "We will take a look at this morning and get back to you". I wait until 1pm, I call: no answer. 3pm, I call, no answer. 4pm. Finally someone answers me! Says hes checking with his technician and swore he would give me a call right back. Guess what? No call. Had to call again 15 minutes before they closed. Finally they gave the phone back to Kip, and this is where it gets good (not really): He says that I need a brand new thermostat housing, and then that plus some new bolts and the work involved would cost $500! Heres the funny thing though, I caught his BS a mile away, because 48 hours before I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW THERMOSTAT HOUSING AND PUT IT ON. Then once I call him out on his lie, he says "oh its new?" Well, then it will be $300. I still have to put a heli coil on the bolt hole, etc.". That is when right away I knew, this guy was a crook. Literally anyone can open up the hood of my car at the time and identify the issue, but this guy just thought I was too stupid to care (even though I told him exactly what was wrong) and he tried to take advantage of me. I immediately went back to the shop and collected my vehicle. Luckily, this has a good ending. I took my car to another nearby mechanic and they were professional, quick, resolved the issue in one day. Oh and, they charged $180 for the whole job and got it done in 3 hours. I knew they did because I knew what the issue was, and knew the costs involved. Please, please do not come to this auto mechanic. Honestly driving back from his shop I was saddened thinking of the hundreds of people he has ripped off who didnt know any better about their vehicles. If I didnt know any better, not only would I have paid hundreds more than I should have, the issue would not even have been fixed!! Please, just avoid this place at all costs. read more

Very honest and capable repair shop! Kip Sailor has been maintaining our vehicles for the past 12 years - all 5 of them including the cars our kids drive. He always discusses the repairs with us thoroughly before doing any of the work and is good at helping prioritize repairs if we can't afford everything at the time. He uses refurbished parts when it doesn't jeopardize performance or durability. They're very cost conscious and do what they can to save their customers from unnecessary expenses. They do work on a wide variety of cars - all makes. They always stand behind their work. read more

Lousy customer service. Poor communication. They took three days longer and charged $400 more than they originally quoted to replace my clutch. I dropped my car off on a Monday. Kipp quoted me $900 for a clutch and told me it would be done by end of day Tuesday. Tuesday he told me maybe Wednesday. Wednesday he told me probably Friday due to ordering a flywheel, which they initially said only needed refurbished. At no point did he mention that he'd be charging me $400 more until it came time to pay. Absolutely unreasonable considering the part was $266 and no extra charge for labor was needed as it's all a part of the same system. Will NOT do business there again. I can not recommend this shop when there are so many other honorable, hard working mechanics who don't swindle hundreds of dollars from their customers. Very disappointing experience. Paying for the flywheel is no problem, but had I known how much the price difference was to begin with I would have taken my car to any one of the several other shops that quoted me $300 less than Kipp charged me, including the flywheel. My only hope now is that the new squeal upon startup resolves itself. read more
