Located on MacDougal street in the West Village, it's a place you can't miss since there's usually a line during peak times. *FOOD* The restaurant offers classic Viet staples such as banh mi sandwiches, pho, vermicelli and rice dishes. As for what I ordered: -- Sautéed shrimp and fried spring roll vermicelli dish ($14.95); this dish was light and tasty. The entree came with cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, daikon and a Viet chili sauce. I do wish they gave more of the chili sauce to make the dish more flavorful. The spring rolls were very crunchy and there were a decent amount of shrimps that were included. *AMBIANCE* This place is very cramped, so get cozy with your neighbors! In warmer weather, they do offer outdoor seating. They do not take reservations and we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table on a Saturday evening. *SERVICE* Service was ok. Food came out quickly after ordering. They were also flooded with a bunch of takeout orders so it's a bit tough to expect good service and we found ourselves constantly asking for things. Saigon shack seems to always have a line, and to be honest I can't really understand why when there are better Vietnamese places around. Their pho is pretty standard and it's flavorful but there's just something in the broth that tasted off. I came here with a friend and we ate so much food for a really affordable price $25/each including tips. We ordered a chicken pho, a mango salad, a Thai tea that we replaced whole milk with almond milk (the staff were nice about that!), and some spring rolls. The food was really fulfilling. We shared everything but we almost couldn't finish it. The process was so easy because we were paying by credit card, we ordered through an app and paid the meal and tips by the app as well. The restaurant is tucked on an NYU street do it does get really packed and busy with students and locals at the same time. It's noisy but in a good way. We already have a perfectly perfect pho place that shall remain nameless, but my husband thought we should branch out more when it comes to Vietnamese food. He was definitely wrong, based on my experience at Saigon Shack. We got right in at 6pm on a Thursday without wait, although the restaurant had a decent crowd. No alcohol, despite bar seating. The service felt rushed and distracted, serving tables that sat down after us. The broth lacked flavor so don't be shy when it comes to lime, sriracha and hoisin sauce. Their lemongrass chicken pho was very memorable to me, as the broth tasted especially flavorful. I picked up fish sauce and rock sugar, neither of which I've had before in other chicken pho dishes I've ordered back in the Bay Area. You'd have to cover it in Sriracha or hoisin (the only sauces they provide) in order to give it something. It's also small for the price. When did pho become fancy? Spicy Short Rib Pho: 7/10 The spice in this pho is what saved it. Otherwise it would have been bland like the regular. Great spot for authentic Vietnamese food. This place is cash only though so be prepared, we had to walk a couple blocks to get to the nearest Chase. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and did not have to wait on a rainy Saturday for lunch. We had the spring rolls and bánh mì for appetizers and the pho for mains. Everything was reminiscent of my mom's home cooking. The spring rolls were crispy and paired well with the sauce. This place is smack dab in the center of MacDougal St. It is pretty small and cramped inside, so my friend and I chose to dine outdoors. For my drink, I just had to get the Coconut Vietnamese Iced Coffee. When I first tried it, I couldn't really discern the coconut and overall, the drink wasn't very sweet. I mentioned it to our server, and he was quick to offer a solution by bringing me extra coconut milk, as well as condensed milk. This helped to create the creamy, silky smooth, coconut-y, sweet flavor profile I truly wanted. I decided to order Grilled Pork Chops, Shrimps, and Fried Spring Rolls with Vermicelli noodles. The dish came with cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, daikon, and Vietnamese chili sauce. The vegetables were fresh and light. All this came in a pretty large bowl and a decent amount of pork chop and shrimp. The noodles were a bit plain, so I added both chili sauce and hoisin sauce, which was a wonderful combination. The pork chops had char marks on them, and were tender and well seasoned. The shrimps were juicy and succulent. After waiting some time, Christie (apologies about the name bc I did not write it down as I usually do, but kiddo was there so I was distracted) came by and took over our table and I was grateful for this. She could see where I needed help and assisted gracefully. We ordered drinks and she made sure that babes had everything she needed to be comfortable in a grown-up style restaurant. GRUB RUNDOWN: Summer Rolls - as good as any I have had. These were jam packed with shrimp, vermicelli, cukes, carrots and lettuce. They were served with a nice peanut sauce and we both enjoyed them. Sautéed Broccoli - soooo good! Definitely a must add to your meal. It's garlicky and cooked perfectly. The florets were crunchy and flavorful. Lemongrass Chicken Pho - I ordered this for babes. She loves a good soup just like me, no matter the temperature. Even in the summer, we'll be sweating and slurping and she enjoyed every bite. Christie gave us an extra bowl to make my kid's dining experience a better one. Crab Cake Bahn Mi - I ordered this because I wanted something different. It's definitely not your traditional crab cake. It looks like they bake large crab cakes and cut them out for the sandos, although I could be mistaken. It did taste good but because I expected something else, it was a bit of a let down. I would have liked a lore substantial crab cake inside, something flakier and larger in size, not so flat. Brisket Bahn Mi - I ordered this to-go for my son and husband. Hubby had it as is and my son asked for egg, extra meat and sauce. It traveled well and both enjoyed their food. On the way out I also got myself a Vietnamese iced coffee for the road and it was really good, not as sweet as they usually have been in my opinion. I liked this one best. It's a small space with tables placed more or less as close to each other as possible, but the food makes up for the slightly claustrophobic atmosphere. My vegetarian pho was delicious. Flavorful broth that wasn't overly salty, a good variety of veggies, plenty of sprouts and basil on the side, and really tasty soy protein that helped make this a filling meal. My friend was visiting NYC for 3 days, had gotten ubereats from Saigon Shack with another friend, and loved it so much she insisted we come in person. For food, I got the Classic Beef Pho. The only downside was that the beef was served already in the soup. It was rare to begin with, but as it stewed in the soup it cooked quick. After reading some reviews, I saw that this place was cash only..... which is just somewhat true. One of the weird things about eating here was that the service was so strange. We were seated, scanned the QR code to see the menu, someone came around to give us water, and then... nothing. RADIO silence. I thought maybe we had to order online from the QR code since there was an option to put your table number on the order, but in order to do so we had to make a ChowNow account which neither of us wanted to do. We ended up calling a waiter over who told us that we could order with the QR code if we had to pay with credit card but we could order with them if we could pay with cash. I wanted a banh mi. Saigon Shack sounded like a promising place to pick one up to eat in the park, and I'd heard good things about it. Of course this means that the banh mi is $12. But I was in the mood, so I came. I ordered myself a grilled pork sandwich to go (cash only), and sat down to wait at one of the tables when I realized I was just in the way standing there like an idiot. After waiting a few minutes, I realized I wasn't going to make it to the park, as I was entirely too hungry, so I asked if I could just eat at the table. The pickled veggies are piled high, and quality. The juicy pork chops are pounded thin, and taste like they were cooked to order, as they should be (sometimes you might get some sad, microwaved meat at the wrong spot). Came here with my sister and her boyfriend on a sunday afternoon for lunch. Firstly, it was above 80 degrees and really humid that day. Please turn your AC on harder. We were seated near the window and we were hot. The patrons directly under the AC are fine but we were not. As for the food, I ordered a spicy bahn mi and it was soggy and not even spicy. It was very underwhelming. I tried my sister's pho broth and it was good but nothing i haven't had in New Jersey. The pork chops my sister's boyfriend ordered was delicious and well seasoned. Incredible pho place! The vegetarian broth here was so satisfying, and I almost drank the whole bowl, which I don't usually do, especially with vegetarian pho. Food came out super fast. We were in a bit of a rush, so we came in 6:15 and left 6:52. That's how fast their food came out. The servers here are amazing. Their ability to juggle so many customers stood out to me.
