I absolutely adore the ambience of this restaurant. It is an old home that has a lot of character and charm and the decor makes you feel like you're inside somebody's personal living room and I just love that. Unfortunately, the tables and chairs were all rather rickety, and we had to fuss around with a wooden wedge with our table to try and keep it balanced, and also a nail on one of the chairs was poking through. The food was fresh and very yummy , I personally do not eat a lot of Vietnamese food, so I was not aware that pho is a rather sweet broth. So, we used to go here precovid and this restaurant has changed since then. It used to be a full service restaurant with a cozy fire and great food, which now, it is none of those things unfortunately. I'm so sad, but you have to order at a counter and they bring your food to you. I think the menu is the same from years ago, (smaller portions) but think it's a different chef and it was only okay (4/10) . We are not coming back unless they make it into a full service restaurant and change chefs. I don't want this to be seen as a negative review, but as a way of saying things need to change to maintain repeat customers. While in Old Saybrook a few days ago, my friend and I were looking for a place to get lunch. We came across Saigon City, a Vietnamese restaurant. It looks like a house, and if the GPS didn't bring us here, we wouldn't know it's a restaurant. They have a little area for outdoor seating, and some front yard decor. We stepped inside and found it covered in faux plants everywhere. There was also a piano and a few motorcycles in their dining area. They have a large menu standing on the floor. They want you to order the food before you sit. This place is so backwards. So we ordered a Chicken Pad Thai to share. They also don't provide you with water, despite dining in. They sell a small bottle of water for $2.00. This was very strange. We sat at a table by the window. We were the only ones dining here. I noticed the dining room was very filthy. Tables were dirty, with finger marks and crumbs, there was thick dust on the windows. Spiderwebs and dust under the chairs. The funny thing was they had a sign "Please keep our dining room clean." Our Chicken Pad Thai arrived very quickly. It was hot, packaged in a to go container. Another turn off. We're obviously sitting down, why is our food packaged to go? We got styrofoam plates, and plastic silverware. The Chicken Pad Thai, was ok. I've certainly had better, and a more generous serving. The chicken was very tender, the peanut sauce was very light. I'd say the meal it's self was just fine. The presentation and everything else was absolutely awful. We went up to the counter to pay. I'm very confused by this place. Despite the Pad Thai being fine, I would absolutely never dine here again. The waitress, she might be the manager or owner, wasn't friendly or inviting. They don't provide water. Their space is very cluttered and very filthy. Order before you sit, puts you under pressure and I didn't like it. There are so many better places for dining in Old Saybrook. Ugly and creepy looking interior but the food was great. Ordered the chicken Pad Thai bento which came with white rice, sliced spring rolls, cucumber tomato salad and 3 slices of orange. The Pad Thai had perfect heat flavor except it was a teeny weeny bit sweet. I asked for a lime slice, squeezed the juice out and mixed it all together. That did the trick! Easily one of the top 5 Pad Thai's I've ever had. My nephew ordered a green Thai curry. I'm usually not a fan of Thai curries but this one surprised me, it actually had flavor! I'm a huge fan of Thai food for its signature zest. Tamarind, lemongrass, kaffir lime, coconut, hot curries, and sweet/spicy/salty combos really awaken the senses and make me feel alive. When this representation of Thai cuisine is misleading, it makes me sad. Saigon City is average, but hs the potential for improvement. I've been here twice, and both times I was bright eyed and bushy tailed over the excitement for Thai. Both times I thought I was going elsewhere and ended up here (by fate? who knows). Both times I left full, with a less than jazzed dining companion, and yearning for what I've come to know Thai food really is. First time I came with my husband, who ordered the Steak Pho, and I ordered the Curried stir fry. The pho was near inedible, over seasoned and noxiously reeking of star anise, and was so overwhelmingly flavorful that literally nothing in the soup was salvageable. It permeated the noodles, veggies, and beef alike, and made them all carpeted in this heavy flavor. My curry veggies had bell peppers, despite specifically asking for them to hold them back, but otherwise was decent but nothing special. On the return trip with my mom, we both ordered the Thai Bento boxes, which had chicken pad thai, fruit, fried spring rolls, a salad, and white rice. This was about $11/pp, which I think is ridiculous because the small portion of pad thai, although amazing was the only thing worth eating in the whole mess. The reason I give them two stars when this dining experience was very much a one star both times, is because I believe with a little tweak of the spice hand, and a little more lean on traditional flavors, this place could be fantastic. I know they also opened a gelato shop on site too with Thai Boba and other hot weather favorites, but in the meantime they should work on the product they already have, before expanding their enterprise. read more

Really disappointed with the changes and downgrade of this restaurant. On our way back to NJ, we stopped for a quick dinner expecting the same quality of service and food. The building is really starting to fall in disrepair and the restrooms were not up to our standards. Overall, the food was not up to par - so much so that we not only didn't finish our meals, but didn't even ask for a doggie bag. You would think our server or the owner would ask why we didn't eat or desire a take home container. Simply put, the food was not good. My number one favorite spring rolls! (My second favorite are from a Cambodian restaurant in Oakland, CA called Battambang) I ordered the saigon sizzling pancake, which is basically a stir fry in an omelet, but the omelet is more like a crepe (thin, crispy, delicious). It's always a sign of quality to me when the intestines have been properly/fully removed from shrimp! Overall, every bite was perfectly sweet and savory, even the side salad. I love this place, a hidden gem and one of the better restaurants and probably only Thai place within the shoreline. Inside and outside seating we love both. In the Winter the place is very cozy. They also will do takeout orders. Drinks: A full bar menu, I am from Boston and must say they have some of the greatest cocktail menus and each cocktail I have had here has been delicious, leading to a follow up beverage order after finishing my first every time. Appetizers: You cannot go wrong. I really enjoyed the calamari. The summer rolls and thai spring rolls are also fabulous. A lot of the soups your can order in half or appetizer portions and I liked them all. Dinner: Again there are so many options and I liked them all. Not great value for what you get. So the main issue for me was the price. I paid $45 for two pad thai of average size and two thai ice teas. The thai ice tea was decent. I've had way worse. They were small (~8oz or so?) but that's not that weird for thai ice tea, in my experience. The pad thai was okay and i ate it all, but it was nothing special and some of their ingredient choices were ???. In my shrimp pad thai i got egg, peanuts, pad thai sauce, noodles, onion, and tomato (??) lettuce (??? And was gross and hot and slimy) and pickled carrots (actually pretty tasty but not a pad thai ingredient) and cucumber (???). My friend got vegetarian pad thai which has much of the above with tofu and cauliflower (???). Overall it wasnt **bad** but it was really weird and we had to pick out the tomato, cucumber, and lettuce because what the f***. The value for cost is where it really loses points. If this was twenty bucks cheaper it'd have been a reasonable meal and would have rated higher. If you have to eat in old saybrook and really want asian food, this isn't going to be inedible, but it's really not great. read more

Asked owner for help carrying take out and no hesitation. Very friendly. Got the Saigon Spicy chicken and it was delicious; couldn't stop eating it. Also got coconut chicken soup; also delicious. Basil chicken and winter shrimp again; delicious ! Plenty of chicken and vegetables in both dishes. The only disappointing thing was the spring rolls. I tend to stay away from restaurants where it looks like the staff lives upstairs (bad experience with a long-gone Chinese restaurant in my home town that involved mice and the CDC) BUT . . . because of my affinity for Thai food and the rare occasion that I actually come across a Thai restaurant . . .I decided to give it a try. When you walk in the door it definitely feels like you are in some old lady's house and that she has a full bar and cashier in her living room. The decor is eclectic and unapologetic. The menu offers a lot - from beef and seafood dishes to chicken and duck. This past time I had an intense craving for Shrimp Pad Thai (extra spicy) and I was not disappointed. I even got to peek in the kitchen on my way to the bathroom and everything looks clean and on-point. So no worries here . . . just good Thai food. I will be back soon. read more

We've been a few times now and always have a good experience. We've had the same server each time- a young woman who is attentive and helpful with our menu questions. We like that it's quiet and cozy. The interior does look dated, but it doesn't bother us. They have a big beautiful fireplace that is always going on a chilly night. I think if they remodeled they'd get more people in the door, but then the quaintness would be gone. My chicken pad Thai and pho are always delicious. My boyfriend gets something else that he can't get elsewhere. He loves it. The portions are great for the price and we frequently leave with leftovers. Came here at about 7:30 on a weeknight for first time. The dining room was dimly lit ... actually quite dark. When I approached the take out area they had a big sign with the menu on it and I asked if it was take out only. The guy said - no dining room service, you order here. Ok i said, so you MEAN only take out then?... because I'm travelling and want to eat in. Then he responds, you order here with me.. then if you want you can go sit down and he gestures to this weird sitting room set up when you first come in that looks like a living room.... but no tables. " well, you originally said NO dining room service so are you going to call me when it's ready??? Then a woman working but until now gabbing away with this other person there for take out says... no, no.. just sit down in there and I'll bring you your food. SO AWKWARD and CoNFUSING ! Okay so after the long Beach I wanted a bowl of pho, came here. At first this place looks like an old antique building selling nick nacks but I guess there was more to it. The interior or exterior didn't bother me if anything I wish they offered more seating outside. So whatever wait a long time for the bowl of pho which was weird because normally it takes 5-10 minutes for it to come out. Then when it came out I thought there was a mistake. It was the smallest large bowl of pho I've ever had. Pretty sure we paid like 10 dollars for maybe a 6 dollar bowl. Flavor and taste was amazing though I'll give them that! The first thing I noticed was how nice and cozy the inside of the 1710 house was. The fireplace was special to sit next to and eat. I also liked the way it was decorated so it was very inviting to be eating in a historical house like this. The food and service was pretty good. I did like the flavor of the Saigon Pho we had last night but the portions are a bit small for the price. The summer rolls were good but small compared other places I have been. The owner was very nice and we enjoyed her friendliness at our table. The one odd thing that I never experienced in CT in any restaurant is that I got charged a $2 service fee charge for using a Visa Debit/Credit card which I found out is illegal in the state of CT. When I asked them about it they said that many restaurants in the local area are now charging this fee that the credit card companies impose on business owners. But this is illegal. If they are reading this, they should look into the law and stop doing before they get in trouble. read more

Beef is thick and soup is salty. Bean sprouts did not come on a separate dish. My bf said pad Thai is mediocre. Waitress is very friendly and the service was good. My wife and I eat Vietnamese, Thai, and Cambodian all the time and have been to numerous restaurants. The fresh rolls are very small compared to many other restaurants we've been to. Also, the amount rice is tiny at $2.50 a pop. We get twice the amount for $1.50 at other restaurants. My wife's bubble tea was very watery with weak tea flavor. My wife's Panang Beef entrée was very small for the money, but tasty. However, my mixed seafood dish was good and the amount reasonable. My wife took a bite of a tomato that was spoiled. In terms of ambiance, they were playing Spanish guitar music, rather than traditional Vietnamese music. When we go out to eat, we want to get the whole experience of the culture of whose food we are enjoying. Finally, this place is pricey. read more

Inside is a very welcoming seating area but not something you'd find to be outwardly Asian in vibe. Oddly there was Mexican music playing. Overall the food was good but not great and somewhat overpriced for quality and amount. We ordered the marinated shrimp app which was ok but the shrimp didn't have any flavor of any marinade. Entree was beef and basil which was good with lots of veggies. Wife had the duck which the flavor was good however it was dry and the skin was like leather.
