    Goat lamb

A few weeks back I went to this Somalian restaurant in Scarborough. It was my first time trying African food and I was impressed! The portions were great for the price and all of the dishes were very different which made it more appealing. We tried their: Chicken stew Beef stew Goat ribs Beef steak Goat lamb My favourite was the goat ribs and the chicken stew. Loved both the dishes! All the items cane with salad and rice and we were also given lentils and mango juice before our main dishes. We got the Somalian milk cake for dessert - this was nothing fancy, just the regular milk cake that tasted really delicious. Would highly recommend to give this place a try if you're nearby!

A pleasant dining experience as my wife and I were craving some Somalian food. We have been without a place to go to since the closure of Hoyos. Located in Scarborough, the restaurant is in a busy plaza but it has ample parking. There are lots of tables inside but are close together. There's also a private room. The washrooms are located in the basement. We ordered the Chicken Stew and the Lamb dish. They all come with a choice of either rice, pasta or chapati (flatbread). We went with the rice. They also provides you with a lentil soup, salad and a mango juice drink. The chicken stew was the highlight as the lamb was a bit tough. The rice was flavorful and quite good. Service is minimal but efficient. Once you finish your food, you need to go up the front to pay. We still miss Hoyos but this place is a nice option to satisfy our Somalian food cravings...

Small lamb broth to start. Rich and flavorful.

This place gets consistently high praise for a reason. They are meticulous in their food preparation and Service. I grew up in Africa and this is food from my childhood. Lamb or goat, highly seasoned, fat free, with saffron rice pilaf (spicy with fal-fal), good Somali tea fragranced with cloves and cinnamon. You start off with a small broth (lamb) to get your appetite going and the rest is just paradise. Professional and poised Service, quiet and low-key ambiance. Always a great experience. Try their lamb or goat dishes. The salmon was lovely, perfectly flaked off the fork. Their chicken dishes are also fabulous. Spotlessly clean place. Chatted briefly with the chef; a man who takes pride in his product. Halal restaurant.

Delicious! I've never had Somalian food before Sagan but wow it was so flavourful. Super friendly service and massive portions. I got the Chicken Sukar with comes with lentil soup and juice. Everything was definitely made fresh! Would definitely come here again.

Lentil soup served with meals. Flavorful especially if you add a little of the green hot sauce.

Sahan is the perfect restaurant to try Somalian food. The hostess/waitress greeted us and sat us at a comfortable booth. She was very patient and explained the menu items to us. We decided on the T-bone steak for me and Goat Fal Fal for hubby. All meals come with juice, lentil soup, salad and tea. When the lentil soup arrived it looked very plain and unappealing but looks can surely be deceiving. The lentil soup was rich and flavorful and when we added a little bit of the green hot sauce that came with it, it was out of this world! Our dishes came out pretty quick and man did it look delicious. The Goat Fal Fal was a little gamey for me but hubby enjoyed it. The T-bone steak was fine, nothing spectacular. What I enjoyed the most was the fragrant rice that came with it. Everything went well together and the flavors were harmonious, I even enjoyed the cooked onions and tomatoes that topped my steak. After our meal we had the complimentary tea. Somalian tea has a number of different spices mixed in like cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and even black pepper but everyone has their own recipe. They make their own tea here and add in their own blend of spices; it was very aromatic and a delicious way to end our meal. Portions are large and I was more than happy to take home the left overs.

This was among my list of bookmarked restaurants and is one of the best places in the city for Somalian cuisine. Located at Warden and Lawrence this place has been here for years. Though inside the ambiance is far from fancy, it's the food, quality and portions that brings the crowd out. I decided to try their Beef stew (suqaar), season beef strips, served with vegetables and a heap of flavored rice. The meal comes with homemade comforting lentil soup, glass of juice and self served cardamom/cinnamon tea. I was able to try their Chicken suqaar with chapati (rather than rice) from Jen and it was just as flavorful. Food, portions, price and overall service was great. Parking is easy to find, ambiance is decent.

This was my very first experience with Somalian food and it was great! The service was fantastic and very welcoming even though we stuck out like a sore thumb hahaha! I thought it was great how supportive of muslims they were as I noticed the water in the washrooms for cleansing, as well as women eating in a private area, no wonder I felt like I was the only girl in the entire restaurant besides the server! I had the chicken suqaar with chapati, and my friends had beef suqaar with rice, and chicken suqaar with rice. To our surprise it came with salad, soup and fruit juice, what a bargain because the portions were huge! The soup was garlic loaded but also complex with nice flavour, it tasted amazing when you add a bit of the hot sauce to enhance the soup's flavours! Yum! Salad had a creamy dressing with lemon which was new to me but also good. My friend said that his beef suqaar was not tender and actually a bit tough, but my chicken was good. He said he would not order beef suqaar again and instead stick to chicken suqaar in the future. I tasted the cinnamon in the suqaar seasoning and I love cinnamon! The plate was definitely two meals for me, I had to take half home! They also had unlimited tea that had a nice cardamom taste. If I realized they had the canteen there earlier I would have grabbed more before I was too full from my entree! I realized after talking to my Somali friend that we never received bananas to eat with our rice! Bummer! Is it because I have to specifically ask? Is it because I'm not Somali? I will return, but I WILL be asking for bananas :-) My boyfriend loved this place and has already returned since!

I had the Combo 2 consisting of beef & chicken suya with jolof rice. The price was a little pricy at over $20, but I would say it was well worth it. There were a lot of food portions in the order that I was able to take some of the food to-go for eating later at home. The taste of suya was not too much different from other grilled food; however, suya still has its own distinct character. The combination of the grilled meat with the salad or coleslaw with the plantain and jolof rice was exquisite. The spice mix use was also just a little different to make suya distinct. My friend had all praises for his order of the suya wrap. The food item was very filling with generous portions of protein included in it. My only complaint was their transition into the new menu pricing and with their online order was not very smooth at all. They had a card with a QR code that should direct you to the online site for ordering, but the code was not quick to register. There was also no place on the online site to enter the discount code to get 10% off your order. The operators should have been better trained and familiar with the whole online order process and the expected interface that customers will run into.

The Party Jallof was delicious, with a nice smokiness to the rice and the chicken seasoned spectacularly. It was my first time trying fufu & egusi, and for the most part it was exactly what I expected! The stew was tasty, and the fufu had such a unique and lovely texture. Similar to Ethiopian food where you use the injera to pick up the meat/veggie stews, you use the fufu to scoop up the egusi. However, since fish bones are used in the stock, I found several fish bones in my dish that ruined the experience of it. It is a little on the pricier side with these dishes at $26+. The portion of rice could have been bigger, but tastewise everything was great. I would definitely come back to try other dishes and to have their jallof again!

We've never had Eest African food, only Ethiopian, so we were excited to order multiple menu items. We ordered a side of fried plantains, a pack of 3 meat pies, small Jolof rice with a fried chicken drumstick, and banku with okro stew. The plantains were great and reminded me of trips to the carribean with a mild sweetness and fried flavor. The meat pies were heavy with a very flaky crust and spicy meat filling. I love meat pies in general, and these were pretty good. I liked the shape of them, but the dough was a bit thick. I didn't mind it at all, but I think it needed something to dip it into. Maybe a soup would've been good with it. The banko and okro stew is definitely an acquired taste, or maybe I should say "texture". I love okra, but man, this stew was slimy. I love the taste of the spinach and okra stew and banku (cassava/corn meal dumpling), but I just couldn't get over the look and feel. If you've ever cut fresh okra, you know what I mean. I loved the jolof rice with its spicy sauce and meat of your choice. We had the fried chicken, which came as a drumstick. It was all very flavorful and probably my favorite of what we ordered. I may attempt to make it at home. I recommend this place if you want traditional West African or are looking for a new place to try out.
