This was my first time trying Ethiopian food. I enjoyed my experience overall, but I think it probably isn't to my personal taste. I shared the Vegetarian Bayaaynatu with a friend. It came with small servings of all the vegetarian dishes - I won't name them all since there were a lot! Of course, the dish was served with their injera (bread). I liked that the dish was made to be shared and I enjoyed the process of eating and breaking off the spongy injera to use it to scoop my food. Eating with my hands was a bit messy but fun! And the bread was fluffy and soft. Unfortunately, I wasn't very fond of the actual dishes. The texture was too mushy for my taste. Perhaps it was my palette that day but I also found it difficult to differentiate between the dishes because they seemed very similar in taste and texture. On a whim, partner and I came to Ethiopian House around noon and we were the first customers of the day. I got the veg+beef combo which consisted of: - Tibs (fried beef) - Tikil Gomon (Cabbage & Carrot) - Atakelt wot (String Beans & Potatoes) - cottage cheese which was all served with one injera. This plate is meant to be eaten with your hands so we did just that (they also have wet cloths to wash your hands at the table that I appreciated). We used injera which is this soft, spongy bread to pick up the sides into one delish bite. I enjoyed all the sides because they were all flavourful but my favourites were the tibs and atakelt wot. I felt the portion was actually perfect for me. More and warm injera would be the cherry on top! I did not see an option to order more injera on the menu. I love Ethiopian food but since covid I haven't made it to my favorite spots and it's not many of my friends first choice in cuisine but I finally found a friend to come with me here! The service here is great. The gentleman was a gentleman and was very polite and explained recommended dishes patiently. Don't be intimidated by weird food lol. The injera bread is pretty weird but you'll grow to enjoy it. I'm not seasoned in Ethiopian cuisine enough to be able to compare good and bad Ethiopian food but it's all good! If you want to try their coffee, order right when you sit down. It takes 20 mins to prepare. I didn't have it this time but saw many tables have presented to them a hot smoking kettle of coffee. The veggie special was amazing, featuring 8 different distinct aspects of their main dishes, while the meat special had two beef dishes and some cottage cheese and collard greens, both were fantastic in flavour. The injera was served cool / room temperature though and would have been a bit better if it was warmed up. The restaurant has a family run feel to it, outdated decor but delicious nonetheless. Back when life was normal, Ethiopian House had a small outdoor patio, on a side street just off the busyness of Yonge. I wanted to try something new. It's very different, eaten with your hands and served on an injera (thin, spongy bread/crepe). Indoors felt dirtier, think carpet everywhere retaining odours. I tried the Vegetarian Bayaaynatu which includes small servings of 8 different vegetarian dishes (Yekik Alicha, Kik Wot, Misir Alicha, Atakelt Wot ... basically mushed peas, lentils, mixed vegetables). Good choice if you want to try a variety of vegetables and spice levels. I also had a beef and vegetable Bayaaynatu. Same concept with ground beef. Overall I wasn't impressed with the quantity, not super filling, more like vegetable mush. If you want to try something different, this is very different, but that's it. read more

I love Ethiopian food! It's always a hit, and I've never had a bad experience! After Japanese and Mexican, I would have to say this is my favorite cuisine! This location is pretty remote. Without a map, I would have missed it! The guy working the front of house was very friendly! He offered me water before anything else! I had an idea of what I wanted. The Doro Wat is one of my go to's. It's basically a spiced chicken stew made of thigh meat. This location provides it with a small salad and a cottage cheese like side of cheese. Again, I can't stand soft cheeses like cottage, feta or ricotta, but I'm glad I tried this! Mixed with the Doro Wat it was really delicious! The Doro Wat was delicious! It was a bit spicy ( not hot, just spiced well), so I had to slow down a bit and drink extra water. You know a dish is good if you have to pause and reflect on the bite you just took! Having tried numerous Ethiopian restaurants, I'd say that this is one of my favourites. The place is a converted townhouse on a quiet street, and the interior decoration gave a really nice ambience. Food selection was typical of any other Ethiopian restaurant, but more tasty, not as spicy, and just the right portion. On the day we went, there was only one employee in the front working and he was very busy. We were seated and waited a bit to order and it took some more time to get our food. They gave us huge amounts of injera, which had a very interesting taste to it. It tasted a bit acidic which I did look up and it said that a small percentage of people could taste it whereas others couldn't (my company didn't taste it). Eating Ethiopian food has been on my bucket list for a while. It's surprising that it took me this long to try in spite of living in Toronto. My best friend and her husband were visiting Toronto and wanted to go out for dinner on a Saturday night. As my friend was the visitor, I gave her the choice of choosing where to eat. She was craving Ethiopian so she found Ethiopian House Restaurant on Yelp. When you walk in, it isn't much. The decor is a little outdated and the first floor is quite small. I ordered the Tibs Dish, which is (directly from their menu) pan fried beef sauteed with onions, garlic, green peppers, tomatoes and awaze with injera. Perfectly seasoned, I enjoyed the beef. Wrapping it in injera, I ate the entire dish without a problem. To finish our meal, we ordered the Ethiopian Coffee. The server brought out a beautiful pot along with melted butter that we could mix into the coffee. I can't wait to return as I found the food and my overall dining experience here great. Finally got to try Ethiopian House in February. It was an experience right as you walk in with the strong fragrance of incense and Ethiopian artwork all over the walls of this house converted into a restaurant. Our server, who might be the owner based on the business card I saw, was helpful and calming when he advised the coffee and popcorn was something that required time to enjoy after a meal. After a pleasant dining experience I had at Ethiopian House Restaurant, I can gladly say I will be returning in the near future. My friends and I weren't sure what to get, so the waitress recommended a platter for us to share, which includes veggie, meat, and chicken options. Along with a big platter of assorted colors and favours, we each also got two rolls of injera; which served as the perfect utensil to absorb and grab just the right amount of each dish in our platter. The portion was huge for three people, and it came out to ~$17 per person. If you're sitting on the fence about trying something new, you should definitely step out of your comfort zone and give this place a try. This was my first time trying any Ethiopian food so I have nothing to compare to, but it was definitely a great first experience! Went here on a Thursday night and they only had the first floor open and one waitress. This was fine at first but it actually got quite busy afterwards. As I've never tried any Ethiopian dishes before, I was completely lost with the menu and asked the waitress for some suggestions. Right away she recommended he house special, which to this day I'm don't know what it contained, but she assured us we would love it. The house special as I understand is a kind of like a sampler plate in which they adjust portion size depending on the amount of servings. The house special is served with a sort of pancake like bread, which I believe is called injera. It's sooo soft and surprisingly sour which actually goes well with a lot of the dishes served. When our main platter arrived it was HUGE! So much variety, and each item was very full of flavour. In the middle there was a chicken stew which was covered in a hot chilli oil, which actually closely resembles the type of hot chilli oil you get from northern Chinese restaurants. Eating with my hands was a bit difficult at first and definitely messy but please don't let that deter you from trying this delicious food! Overall, this first experience blew me away. My friend (a regular customer) took me for my first taste of Ethiopian food. I'm not sure if what she ordered was even on the menu. She asked for a tasting menu of beef and vegetables, but asked for no cottage cheese (I have a lactose allergy) and no tartare/rare meat (personal preference). We got a huge injera dotted with a number of different stews and curries: 1) beef tip stew 2) ground beef fried with spices like clove and maybe star anise? 3) stewed greens (collards, I think) 4) veggie stew with green beans, carrots, squash 5) light potato curry 6) 2 types of chick pea curry (one spicy, one mild) 7) 2 types of lentil curry (one spicy, one mild) 8) lightly dressed tomato and lettuce salad. We liked the beef tip stew so much that we ordered an extra side of it, which was added to the injera. The original dish came with 2 individual injeras on the side, and two more were brought when those were finished. It was a hearty meal, nothing spicier than a raw jalapeno with seeds and ribs intact. My friend enjoyed some pinot grigio with her meal; they no longer carry the Ethiopian beer she wanted - supply chain issues. We were too stuffed to go for dessert or coffee. Service from the brother-sister team of owners was fast and friendly. The venue has lovely pieces from Ethiopia, a nice rustic feel. I will definitely be back. read more

Finally upon arrival the ambiance is beautifully decorated with Ethiopian influence. Their menu features a lot of choices along with daily lunch specials that provide you plenty of selections. For starters our entourage of 3 decided to try their stuffed veggie spicy green peppers. Nothing over the top but nonetheless it was flavorful and spicy. For main entree I opted to try their daily lunch special- meat platter dish which featured a colorful melody/sample of meats prepared. Each sample was specially prepared with its own distinctive spice exhibiting the flavors of Ethiopia. Each portion had its own distinctive taste but overall average in my books. The food is quite flavourful and reasonably priced. We got a platter of veggies, lentils and beef. Each item on the platter has its own unique flavour. The platter is accompany with injera (Ethiopian spongy bread). You use the injera to pick up the food. You eat with your hands as cutlery is not available (make sure you wash your hands). This has really become my go-to place for the occasional Ethiopian craving! I usually come for the lunch specials but after convincing another couple to give Ethiopian a try, we came in on a Saturday evening. Mohammed is so welcoming and even though the restaurant is quite understaffed, he has away of making you welcome. He even stopped us from ordering to much. We got a large platter with all the veggies and lentils, kitfo, tibs and the weekend only doro wat (or chicken stew). All the food couples with the injera was absolutely delicious and each type had its own unique flavor. If you haven't had Ethiopian before, think of it like - the flavours of Indian cuisine without the spicy heat and the overbearing abundance of spices. This is not to say anything bad about Indian food because I love it but it's just to highlight what you may expect. Most importantly - there isn't any cutlery here so get over having to eat with your hands. Huge disappointment! Saw the great reviews and wanted to try something new so came by for a dinner on a weekday night. It was very empty, my dining companion and I were the only two in the restaurant. I was pretty surprised since it was around dinner time. There were a variety of meat, veggie and bean based dips. The injera (what you use to scoop the meat/veggie/beans what have you) tasted very sour. Not sure if that's the way it is or if it's gone bad. Regardless, it wasn't for me. The service was horrid. I had to get out of my seat and find the waitress in their little nooks to get any type of service. I'm sorry but I when I go to a sit down restaurant I don't expect to have to get out of my seat to be served. Is that too much to ask? When I wanted to pay, the waitress punched in some numbers on the register and told me how much I owed without even presenting a bill (also had to walk up to the register to pay btw). Yep. We've coming to this restaurant( on/off) for years and this time it was for a birthday celebration. It felt like a complete disaster and an embarrassment this time and it has left us feeling like we never want to come back again (there are so much other places to try!!) We came on a busy Saturday evening with reservations- no waiting, however there's 1 waitress for the main floor and 1 waiter on the first floor. FYI- it is not a kid friendly (food-wise) or elder friendly (a full flight of stairs to access toilet). It took our waitress almost 10 mins to come get our order and that too she rushed while we were ordering our drinks as she went to sit other people in middle of taking our order. We asked for spoons and she was sooo reluctant to give us any and repeatedly said that we don't have spoons...yes, I'm aware of your culture and trust me we know that better coming from Indian background, however we don't impose that in a restaurant!!!! And not to mention we have been there before several times and got spoons every time we asked for. By this time, we were already not impressed by the whole experience. 20-25 mins into us being there, my husband wanted place an order for their "special coffee" however he got brushed off and was told that the kitchen is too busy and it will take them an hour. He was discouraged by the waitress and waiter right away...well then do a better job in waitressing and perhaps let people know earlier on or put in your menu that it would be an hour (btw- menu says 30 mins!!).
