We can't speak to the authenticity, but we loved the platter for 2 from here. Every dish that came with it was delicious. I saved every last bit and licked the plate clean when I finished the leftovers. It was absolutely worth it and absolutely delicious. Perhaps it is altered for foreigners' tastes, but it worked on us. We will be going back here and it has also opened us up to explore more Ethiopian cuisine. Important to eat with your hands and use the injera bread to scoop up the flavourful dishes. We ate this during the pandemic so it was take-out. The pick up experience was pleasant. The lady running the place was very nice and we would love to dine in when restrictions are lifted as the restaurant itself looks nice, clean, and inviting. read more

What a cozy and relaxed restaurant. I love the ambience! Such a nice take on Ethiopian culture. I loved the veggie platter I ordered. Perfect for sharing for two people. Very lovely experience here. Great vegan options and delightful big portion sizes. If you're tired of eating the same vegan burgers and fries and vegan junk food, this is a good alternative and less processed than all the daiya, faux meat and faux this and that. Make sure to get there slightly early on the weekends as it is very busy. The food is authentic and nicely seasoned. Lots of variety and options to choose from and very comfortable. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. My family and I made friends with another family eating there. We had a great time! read more

The first time I spotted Selam was by total accident - my dining partner had just arrived from Seattle and was hungry, looking for late night vegan bites in Toronto. Unfortunately it was past 9pm at this point, so Selam's kitchen had already closed. We made a mental note to return one day though, and continued on with our journey that cool fall night. Fast forward to today, when we were again wandering the streets in search of food. We were in relatively near the restaurant and remembered not being able to make it, and so decided to stop by again as a second attempt. And oh boy am I glad that we decided to drop in again! Located in the basement of its sister restaurant, Pero, Selam was extremely quiet and I think overlooked, overshadowed by the trendy atmosphere of the above restaurant. We were greeted and seated immediately, with only one other table there, who were finishing up anyway. While my dining companion had been to Ethiopia and was familiar with all of the dishes, I was not, so we opted for the buffet that allowed us to taste a little bit of everything. At only $18 per person, this felt like a steal compared to the $16 4-dish combo that we would have ordered off of the menu! With so many types of food there, I couldn't keep track of which item I was eating, but I loved most of the items I picked up. The chickpea curry was especially tasty to me, while my partner enjoyed the lentils. We were thoroughly stuffed at the end of the meal. Despite this though, we wanted to try Ethiopian coffee and had ordered that to be served at the end of our meal. I LOVED this - not only the coffee, but the presentation of it all as well! They came down with the roasting pot and gave us a whiff of the roasted beans, and then served it with incense and popcorn, just like they do in Ethiopia (or so I'm told). The coffee was delicious, and was quite possibly the best way I could have ended this spontaneous lazy Sunday outing. I'm bummed that this restaurant has been so neglected, because I certainly fell in love with it today. It seems that it is relatively new though (based off of basic Google searches and reviews), so I am hoping it gains more traction soon! Until then though, I'll keep returning for coffee at the very least, and what seems to be a pretty happening bar upstairs at Pero, for as long as I can. read more

I came for the buffet and enjoyed flavourful dishes with lentils, okra, chickpeas and awaz sauce. On the side of your delicious meal are beautiful hung paintings, an easy to converse sound level, and gentle East African music and Jazz classics. I was introduced to the gregarious owner though a friend. So I'm slightly biased but was not paid for this review. This Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurant is new but their sister restaurant Pero is currently rated as the "#1 African Restaurant in Toronto" on TripAdvisor. read more

Superb is the first thing that comes to mind after my first bite !!! I'm a bit picky about my choice of food. Not a Food Snob but rather unsure to foods foreign to me but when I had the food here I was quite surprised how delicious and palatable it was. It tasted familiar but I thought I've never been to Ethiopia but then I realized it's the Home Cooked love that the food was prepared with that made it familiar as Mom carefully source her food and the detail she would give and love she adds to coax the natural umami from her ingredients , this is the food you get here. The food here is not cooked for consumption and sustenance rather it's prepared to celebrate the gathering of friends and of life . I will return with my friends and family . I had dinner here last night with friends, and really enjoyed it. We got two 6-item combos between 4 people, which allowed us to try nearly everything on the menu, and it was all so flavorful and delicious. I'm still craving the eggplant, sweet potato, and mushroom dishes! Our waitress was also very nice and attentive, and the ambience/music had a cozy and relaxing vibe.
