Fun, specialty food market in Brooklyn. Prices can be a bit high, but you get to stock up on items rarely found outside international food markets. They have an impressive array of nuts, cheeses, olives, whole coffee beans, olive oils, Middle Eastern spices, etc arranged impressively around the store. Perhaps the best thing that makes them stand apart is the in-house made fresh food like their hummus, baba ganoush, and zaatar pita, which are delicious! A great place! My big tip is don't try to serve yourself certain bulk items or cheese. This is a typical beginner's mistake here, and it doesn't go over very well. Other than that, it's practically the happiest place on earth, with colorful and flavorful foods from around the world presented simply but artfully. To me, the best part is the deli counter. The 10-step program to be the hit of any pot luck: Step 1: Go to Sahadi's. Step 2: Grab a number in their bulk section. Step 3: When your number is called, order the falafel mix. Step 4: Bring it home and once home, spoon equal parts falafel mix with equal parts room temperature water and mix. Step 5: Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until thick like sand. Step 6: Spoon ball size shapes into a frying pan of pre-heated oil. Step 7: Lightly brown on one side, then turn and lightly brown on the other side. A taste of the middle east right here in Brooklyn. They have literally the best hummus in the world. Its better than what I had when I was actually in the Middle east. I also love their tahini that I have began incorporating into many of my meals! Meaning, you grab a number (preferably at the start of your visit) and are assigned a dude (my friend prefers 'Sahadi's boyfriend.') SBF then accompanies you around the store, helping to fill your basket with nuts and 1 pound bags of $4.75 French Roast. $4.75 A POUND?!! If only their idea of assisted shopping also included a sherpa. Note #1: check out the huge cans of San Marzano tomatoes for $2.75. It's one of the best deals going. Note #2: Don't let the odd placement of the tiramisu by the babaganoush stop you from trying one of the best cash-and-carry desserts in Brooklyn. Grab a number, stand around and order some olives from the olive bar (we're not talking black or green, instead there's gaeta, kalamata, niçoise, oil-cured, moroccan, french, italian, stuffed, spicy) , get some nuts (did you want cashews, peanuts, pistachio, walnuts, hazelnuts? roasted, raw, halved, honey-roasted, yogurt-covered, chocolate-covered?), some naughty snacks for work (gummy bears, jelly beans, chocolate, dried fruits, and so on). Just peruse the magical glass jars filled with goodies, and don't worry the prices are great and you can get as little as a 1/4 pound to try out a bunch of things. Don't forget your olive oil, cheeses, crackers, spices in plastic tubs, coffee by the pound and various breads. There's also a deli section of prepared foods including Middle Eastern favorites like falafel, the best hummus and baba ever, tabouli, pates, meat pies, and some damn good cauliflower (trust me, its bizarrely delish). I think its the best Zabars-esque store this side of the river. The owners recently renovated and rented out the space next door making the store especially spacious. My parents used to live in Brooklyn Heights right around the corner from this place. That was before my time. Way before. (Think at least a decade.) Now add 26 years to that. (you are talking almost 40 years now). But my dad still shops here, just as he did when he lived a few blocks away. This place has such a wonderful selection of ethnic and specialty food. Since I was in the immediate area I offered to my dad to do some shopping here. I was slightly rushed because they were in the process of closing up. But prices are descent. 10 years ago my food prejudices would have prevented me from coming in let alone browsing and picking out high quality food. I had to visit this place because it has so many rave reviews - seriously guys? Yes, it has a huge selection of "middle eastern" foods packed into a ridiculously small place. Yes, they have a very respectable selection of nuts and spices and olives and coffee, along with a host of pastries and food groups too numerous to mention. However, what is the most distinctive feature of this grocery store - that which sets it apart from many other such groceries in Brooklyn? Location and Customer base. The area and all of its surrounding neighborhoods has undergone significant gentrification in recent years, and people in these areas use Yelp. If you're a native Brooklynite, you know there are several way better groceries similar to this in Brooklyn - but those areas are still about 80% non-English speaking, and non-Yelp using. The negative here is the tiny space which makes it difficult to move, long lines, and fairly high prices. The meat selection here includes pork and little to no kosher or halal meats, so be forewarned if you're looking for that type of middle eastern grocery. If you'd like to experience authentic, ethnic Brooklyn groceries then try Kings Gourmet Food, next to the Kings Highway B train station, or Brighton Bazaar near the Brighton Beach B train station. I found the prices fairly reasonable (some on the pricier end, but their bulk pistachios for example were $14/lb which is cheaper than the Park Slope Food Coop). This will continue to be my favorite specialty food store in all of NYC. Located a short walk from Borough Hall/Court St/Jay St on Atlantic across from the Trader Joes, Sahadi's offers a solid bulk selection, artisanal cheese, plenty of dried goods, many local treats, and a homemade deli selection. They have the best hummus in Brooklyn. It's so creamy and nutty. I also love taking home a container of tahini. Their tzatziki, baba and labneh are also delicious. I always stock up on feta here because they offer many varieties (Bulgarian, Greek, French and more) with some as low as $4/lb. I don't love their falafel (too dry) but they have some great meat pies and spanakopita. I mostly go here for the dips and run next door to Damascus for the pita bread. read more

Okay, I read all the other reviews about how great this place was but I still wasn't prepared for how awesome it was. When you go, make sure you're focused so you don't end up buying things you don't necessarily need (you need everything because it's that great) and so you don't spend 2 hours in there like I did drooling over the spinach pies in the deli. The prices were phenomenal. I mean all types of cheeses that would have cost me at least 10-12 dollars at Whole Foods or Trader Joes were 4 dollars here. There were so many spices, I settled for the all spice because A. I'm out and B. I was broke so I needed something multi-functional. Tomato couscous, chocolate bar chunks in white chocolate, bitter sweet, and milk chocolate. I mean nice looking chunks. The best part as mentioned before is the hummus. I am not a fan of hummus, in any flavor, consistency, whatever. I don't like it. I gave the spicy hummus here a try and I'll be going back for pint and dried fruit tomorrow. It's that good. I would give this place 5 stars except for two things. This chick at the register was a total *****. The complaints about the cashiers are true. Annddd the Baklava came prepackaged or something. This was seriously the best picnic food I could ask for! Fresh and delicious! There are no preservatives so they don't last long in the fridge after purchasing like a store-bought ones. This place is magical. Their cheese selection is incredible and affordable, they have an amazing (AMAZING) spice selection which is actually cheap, and they have a profusion of imported and fun pantry items from interesting teas to locally made bitters. Yum. Their prepared food is good, although I've never tried anything but "traditional" middle eastern things like their excellent kibbeh and delicious, mostly-tahini-but-that's-how-I-like-it hummus. They also sell, like, eggplant Parmesan and other standard foods, which are probably very tasty. Overall, Sahadi's is a reason to live in Brooklyn. Let's just say I had to start avoiding this place recently, because I am finding most of my grocery and caloric budget has been blown at Sahadi's! I have lived in the neighborhood for almost four years, but for some reason I never made it into Sahadi's until the last year. Good for the waistline I guess. They have everything I could ever want! I always start by the hitting up the bulk candy/nut/dried fruit/olive bar. Sometimes I have to grab a number and roam around cause the line is so long. They have the best stuff, Wasabi peas for $2.50 a pound (a steal!), yogurt pretzels and raisins (MMMmm), mixed nuts and dried fruit.... and amazing olives. The guys are so nice, they taught me ablout the different kinds of olives and even helped me pick out my new favorite. I don't know what theyre called but they are the bright green ones. After here, I head to the prepared food section. So many awesome choices. My go to choices are the lebne with zataar, eggplant with pine nuts and lamb and beet salad. I've tried a few other things; I wasn't happy with the babaganouj, it wasn't smokey enough. The fried kibee is great tho. Oh, and I always grab a whole wheat zataar bread for later. The first time I came here was about three years ago. I admit that I didn't know about taking a ticket, but I was gracefully reprimanded and rewarded (I thought) with some chocolate. Turns out the staff is always that generous; they often give you samples of things when they are helping you. I am not exaggerating when I say this place could not be any better. It has everything you could possibly want: coffee, grains, nuts, seeds, candies, dried fruits, olives, cheese. The staff is nice and the hours are reasonable (9am-7pm). They are closed on Sundays, which made me sad once, but weekends are too crowded anyway, and so it's easy not to make that mistake twice. Things to try: Whatever tickles your fancy. And go ahead and try something new. They get everything in bulk, and, as a result, keep their prices low. I used to get my sugar-coated chickpeas and labne from the place across the street, but both items are SOOO much cheaper at Sahadis (and I trust the refrigerator temperatures here a lot more than at some of the other joints on the block). Definitely get some olives and French Feta. Yum! Oh, and their halvah is hand cut. You can get that at the register; the girls will cut it for you; I think it's $5/lb. Skip the pita here and go next door to Damascus Bread Bakery. Just trust me on this. Not that it's bad at Sahadis, but it is that much better at DBB. read more

Why do I shop Sahadis 1-2/wk let me count the ways? The fresh & prepared food selection is the best anywhere, it turns out 90% of my meals are from here. Locally made yogurt in the cheese section, the vast cheeses at great price. Bulk section: tremendous selection, most of the people who serve you are either kind, funny and/or helpful. Freshest nuts, 4 kinds of malted milk balls, real licorice, dark, milk & bittersweet choc, Walkers shortbread cookies, best price anywhere. Deli section: homemade humus, baba ganoush, Feta & Sun dried Filo wraps are my fav, always get 6, spanakopita, I'm hooked on MAC & Cheese, Im waiting for my Moussaka to heat up now. Sweet holy Khodayeh Man*!! I friggin love this place. Sahadis' is literally love in a market. The Persian in me screams out in sheer joy every time I enter this place, as it reminds me of the markets out on Long Island (the Persian ones) which are rarer finds out here, where there are fewer markets of its kind. Sahadi's sells more along the Arabic lines, although it carries lots of Persian staples too. Just listing the stuff makes my mouth water, stuff like sour cherry syrup, halva, tahini, turkish bread, doogh (yogurt drink...not generally for the western palate), dried nuts, berries, lovely olives, other breads, cheeses, yum yum yum. These guys rule so hard. I love them. This is because of 2 reasons: I love cheese and I love olives and Sahadi's has a lot of both of those things, at a good price. I highly recommend the breakfast olives, but probably shouldn't because they already seem to sell out pretty regularly. But they are really good and a nice switch from your normal olive choices. I've never had anything from the deli counter, but they do have a really good rosemary bread, and decent coffee at a really nice price. I try to come here every few weeks to stock up. read more

Sahadi's is so cool that when I went to visit friends who live abroad, in countries where a lot of the stuff Sahadi's comes from is the native cuisine, EVEN THEN they all said the one thing they miss about New York is Sahadi's. I feel so grown up, for some reason, handing over my olive/nut/spice/etc. orders to the guy behind the counter. I don't know why, but I do. Maybe because I know the difference between a picholine and a kalamata, or because I am now officially enough of an adult to need pine nuts and cloves on a regular basis.
