I hadn't given Sage Bistro much consideration, perhaps because the exterior of the restaurant is somewhat nondescript. After checking photos of the interior and the food, I changed my mind, and after dining there, I changed my opinion - for the better, much better. Dinner here was excellent, with perfect service. The decor is somewhat classic with just enough upbeat sights and sounds to keep it interesting. Even though we ordered cocktails, the wine list is a nice draw, with many reasonably priced wines by the bottle and glass. Our "small plate" of roasted brussels sprouts with bacon in a sriracha mayonnaise was large enough to be a meal for one person. Dinner salads come with both traditional and unique dressings, and after our salad plates were cleared, our dinners arrived less than 1 minute later. My Portuguese chicken had the right spices and was served with pomme frites (most other dinners will come with rice or pasta). Dessert options include gourmet flavored coffees in the $10-$12 range, plus some decadent sounding desserts (without prices listed). There is enough variety on the menu here, combined with specials, to savor flavors from numerous Mediterranean cuisines. read more

Our experience might have been unusual. We had lunch on a Saturday and were disappointed because there seemed to be excessive use of cooking oil. Perhaps due to our menu choices. I had the chicken pesto panini with fries. Partner had a gyro with onion rings. Ingredients were fresh and prep was good. Unfortunately the veggies in the panini were dripping with oil, as if the oil had been squirted on top while the veggies were pre-frying. Fries and rings were lightly crisped but shiny with oil. I can still taste it hour later. Gyro was good. Interesting local art work was on display, ceiling lighting alternated between bright white LED and dimmer yellow LED. Going all yellow might be a better choice. Service was friendly and efficient. Nice place to eat. Judging from the other reviews we might try it again. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Hummus was superb. But the best is their homemade non-dairy ice cream pistachio and chocolate. The server was courteous and provided detailed answers to our inquiries. My luncheon companion is vegan. I am not. And yet Sage provided meals to meet our respective tastes. Their list of cocktails is intriguing. My friend and I went to Sage Bistro for Dinner and as she promised, we had a great experience. I like the restaurant's warm, relaxed ambiance with tables and booths for diners. The decor is Mediterranean. Local artists sell their work here and donate the proceeds to various charities. One artist sells works to donate funds to California Fire Survivors. Our server, Olivia, reviewed the Menu and Specials with my friend and I. She selected Orzo and Vegetable Soup. The delicious Soup has LOTS of Orzo and Vegetables. The main course was the Mojo Steak from the Specials List. This Steak Dish gets its name from MoJo Spices (Lemon, Cumin, Bay Leaf, Oregano, Garlic) giving the meat a zestful herbed flavorings. The Side Salad came with her favorite Greek Cucumber Dressing. It is light and flavorful, with a hint of Lemon. My dinner included Creamed Asparagus Soup from the Specials List. The Soup is a great springtime choice. The Creamy Asparagus is bright, with a subtle grass flavor. The herbs and spices add complexity to the dish. This is my first experience with Eggplant Puttanesca over Linguini. The Grilled Eggplant, Sauteed Tomatoes, Onions, Olives, and Capers in Marinara Sauce combine to create a bold, savory dish served on a bed of Linguini. This is a visually appealing flavorful delight! I chose Balsamic Tarragon Dressing for my Size Salad. The sweet and tangy dressing has a light Licorice flavor adding zest to my Salad. The Chef came to our booth and asked us about our meal selections. My friend raved about the Mojo Steak Dish. I promised to order the Eggplant Puttanesca again. Olivia took marvelous care of us. We enjoyed our conversation with her and wish her the very best in her studies. I promised to bring my husband in for memorable meals. The four standouts were the waitstaff, humous with warm pita appetizers, the sea bisque soup and a cocktail my husband had. The decor was dingy and dated with weird draperies on some of the windows. I had the lemon chicken soup with kale and orzo. Chicken was dry. The broth overly salty with too much lemon that made it very bitter. For dinner I had the chicken kabobs. The chicken was rubbery and basically inedible. Our fellow diner felt the same way. My husband ordered the mussels , 6 of which were unopened and should not have been served . The GF pasta and sauce were too salty to eat. We left feeling surprised over the good reviews the restaurant had posted and somewhat annoyed to have been served a subpar meal and paying for it. Been here a few times. Last night we had the Calamari and it came perfectly fine. Light batter and cooked just right. Ordered the falafel panini which was so good. My husband and I went for lunch today. We were very disappointed. The restaurant was very pleasant and clean and our waiter was very good but My husband got the Lamb burger and he was chewing and chewing and couldn't even eat it, there was so much grizzle! After a couple bites, we told the waiter and had him take it back. My husband decided not to get anything else. When we got the bill, they didn't even take it off! They just subtracted $10. Had gift cards that I've been waiting to use and visited Sage when out of town guests came to visit. Service was good, no complaints on any of our meals, except for the tartufo that was freezer burned, but our waitress was happy to replace it with a delicious slice of chocolate cake! Gave my Gift Cards to the waitress who returned feeling very badly that the Gift Cards could not be accepted due to new ownership 5 years ago, (I've had the gift cards for a few years , but wasn't aware of the change of hands). Most gift cards these days do not have an expiration and these cards are clearly "Sage Bistro" gift cards with NO expiration on them, so that was a little disappointing. 2 appetizers, 2 soft drinks, 3 dinners and 2 desserts totaled $125.00 before tip. Many years ago we had tried this restaurant and were disappointed. We learned that it had changed hands so we decided to give it a try. There is not a lot of ambiance but that is not to say that there is anything negative. We sat up front in the bar area as it was very light being near the large front windows. Deeper in this rather long restaurant looked to be fairly dark. The service was very friendly. The bartender doubles as the waitress for the front area. The food was very good. I ordered a regular hamburger and my wife ordered a veggie burger. Both were very large and cooked perfectly. We also ordered fries and they were hot and tasty as well. It did take a while for the food to arrive which was a bit surprising since the restaurant was not busy. A nearby diner ordered a salad and we noticed how large it was and they commented that it was quite good. In short, we will be visiting again. Worth a try if you are in the area. read more

Doing a project in Guilderland just west of Albany. Thought what the heck and did a search for vegan friendly restaurants and this was 5 minutes away. What a great surprise it was. Not a lot of vegan options but the waitress was amazing and made a suggestion for serving the falafel with hummus as a gyro. Fantastic, lovely garlic bite to it. For you meat eaters, she also noted that they use real lamb and not your typical mystery meat. Highly recommend you stop by, even if it is out of your way. read more

After reading several good reviews about Sage Bistro we decided to have dinner here with a friend who was from out of town. She is still talking about how much she enjoyed her meal. From the minute you walk in the door to when you leave you can expect to be treated well with service and good food. The restaurant has a charming feel with plenty of space to accommodate diners on a busy Friday evening. The three of us ordered a couple of appetizers to share and by the time we finished those and the salad served with our mains we were too full to really finish our meals. Portion sizes are generous and the food is well prepared with lots of flavor. Our server Carlos was attentive and took great care of us even though he seemed to be taking care of a lot of tables. We didn't feel rushed at all and took our time catching up without interruption. Truly a lovely experience and will be returning. read more

Just looking for something quick we could get on the way home, and my wife remembered a recommendation from a friend on the Greek Salad with chicken. I ordered the basil chicken panini. The chicken was charred perfectly (on both the sandwich and the salad) and the blending of flavors was great. The cucumber dressing on the salad was refreshing and delicious. I have to say the short wait for the gorgonzola sauce on the filet was amazing!! The hummus and fresh pitas were melt in your mouth creaminess!! I found it VERY rude to intentionally alter there regular menu which consisted of traditional favorite dishes such as chicken/lamb kebab, and replaced them with the more expensive dishes on there "special Valentine's Day menu" --- This was an obvious cash grab by the management 2. We waited one hour and forty five mins for our meal 3. My vegetable jambalaya did not even taste like jambalaya ... yuck horrible. This place is in a strip mall and really doesn't seem like much. When you walk in it's also pretty unassuming. The staff is very nice and since we came on a Tuesday at 6 it was pretty dead, but did pick up. The chicken kabob I ordered was delicious. Like really really well seasoned and a perfectly sized portion. The salad beforehand had delicious dressing. The complementary pita with hummus at the start of the meal was a nice touch and came out slightly warm. I also liked the 20% off my bill at the end. I'd recommend and I'd return. Five of us sat at a table in the back for lunch. We were comfortable. It wasn't busy and our waiter was confidently low key and accurately attentive. We appreciated being able to hear one another talk. I had the best veggie burger I've ever had, by far. We all had different meals and each of us noted that the food was quite good. A very disappointing experience. Obviously, the restaurant is suffering from a severe shortage of staff. It took ten minutes before a server appeared at our table. Another 20 to get a drink - and then I discovered that the server made it himself. Actually, both servers were making drinks, waiting on table, and manning the bar area. The sad salad showed up about 45 minutes in. Our entrees appeared about an hour and 10 minutes after we got there. My lemon chicken had no discernable lemon flavor. My husband's farfalle with smoked gouda was made with elbow macaroni, and just looked like a glob of mac n' cheese. Not the servers' fault at all. But sad that they spent much of the time apologizing to people sitting at empty tables looking hungry and grumpy. And then the food was uninspiring, at best. I really liked this place! I was visiting on business and found this because of the yelp reviews. They had house wine for $7 (I believe) a glass so I got the Chardonnay. For dinner I had the salmon. It came with white rice and veggies. Let be tell you about these veggies! They were the star. Sautéed yet crisp sugar snap peas, carrots and green beans with pesto. For the first time ever, I ate my veggies first! The salmon itself was just ok, hence the 4. The skin was very crispy and it was a little dry. The service was good; my waiter was very present and friendly. I had to end the night with salted caramel gelato to take back to my hotel room. Recently ordered takeout and was very pleased with the crab cake and the salmon burger. The crab cake was moist, delightfully seasoned with a generous mix of crab meat and what I assumed was panko crumbs. The salmon burger didn't disappoint either. I had a craving for it and this burger clearly hit the spot. Served on what resembled a brioche bun, it was nicely seasoned and packed with spicy goodness. Sage is located in a small strip mall, and thee entrance is unassuming. However the inside ambiance is quite romantic. More importantly, the food is excellent! We had potstickers with a sweet chili sauce, warm pita bread with tzatziki sauce, and chicken kebabs. The salad dressings are homemade and delicious. All of the food was delicious! This place was cool. We went with a party of 10 people in celebration of my cousin's graduation from UAlbany. All around very good food, no complaints. The mussels were awesome, the hummus/babaganush was great and my pasta dish was really delicious. I ate the spicy sausage, chicken and shrimp over linguini, it was really well done. We ordered the lobster mac n' cheese to share for the table - it was SO rich and heavy.. personally I loved it but a lot of people couldn't handle how rich it was. It must've been a 3 pound caserole dish - dangerous to order for your entree... great idea to split amongst a big table for sampling. We got a monster triple layer German chocolate cake for desert, custom made by the chef and it was incredible. I can't comment on the standard desert menu because we didn't try anything from there, but I imagine they're great, just like this cake. This romantic date night spot is tucked away in a strip mall which is why I was so surprised by how good the meal was. The hostess podium is awkwardly placed midway into the restaurant, but once we were seated we were on the way to Mediterranean goodness. The warm pita bread served with hummus (drizzled with oil = legit) was excellent. The bread warm and soft. The hummus just enough garlic and salt, creamy chickpea goodness. I ordered the chicken kabob salad. The salad itself was wasn't anything too exciting. I would have preferred the cucumber and tomato be chopped up smaller, for aesthetics and convenience. It was also served with a cucumber vinaigrette, except that it tasted like a tomatillo cilantro dressing which was ok but bitter for my taste and would have been much better with a tzatziki dressing or their homemade balsamic dressing which was excellent when I stole a couple bites of my husband's salad. The chicken was excellent, though grilled on the skewer, it was juicy and bursting with flavor. The best chicken kabob I've had in the area! My husband ordered the Portuguese chicken and chorizo with a side of julienned vegetables which he loved. The chorizo was a little more sausage a little less chorizo by my standards but the chicken was juicy and tender. Service was ok, it seemed they were a little understaffed. Ambiance is romantic, dark, and intimate. Service was fast! We closed the meal with gelato which we couldn't pass up after seeing all the options when we walked in. We ordered pumpkin and rocky road. Honestly it wasn't as smooth and delicate and I would have liked. After reading all the rave reviews about this place I think we will give it another try sometime in the future because I'd like to try some of the other items on their menu. read more
