The bartenders are consistently on point, which is important when you've been traveling long enough to consider a properly made cocktail a basic human right. The farm-to-table small plates are usually terrific too. Every now and then, a dish may wander off the culinary trail, but honestly, four out of five plates are the kind that make you look at each other and say, "Why don't we live here?" And then there's the rooftop view. At first, you may have to look past the sea of retail stores and parking lots--but once your eyes reach the mountains on the horizon, the view is downright spectacular. Great drinks, very good food, and mountain scenery that manages to rise above the shopping center below: that is a rooftop restaurant worth planning a road trip around.

I have found the front staff and the wait staff to be lacking in their consideration towards restaurant guests. It seems that they are picking and choosing whom they choose to grant a great experience to. Service: The front staff and waitress we had carried an air of attitude when dealing with me and my family. It seemed like they were not keen to accommodate a few of our basic requests which essentially boiled down to laziness. To be honest, they are very petty when it comes to getting a table on their rooftop...when my family (of 5) came in, they told us it was first come first serve and sat us inside. Another family came in with 3-4 adults and 2 kids after we were seated, to which they promptly moved them outside even though they were inside as well when a spot opened up. I'm not truly understanding the mentality of service here and frankly thought for a nice establishment there would be better decorum and attitude towards guests. Food: overall pretty good. I found the food and drink to be solid. In summary, the food is good here but doesn't surpass the service we received.

Every time we visit Harrisonburg, Montpelier at the Madison Hotel is a must-stop for us--and…read moretonight's dinner reminded us why. With a new chef at the helm, the menu still delivers the quality and care we've come to expect, but with an added touch of fresh creativity. We ordered the steak burger and the grilled salmon, and both dishes were outstanding. The presentation was elegant without being overdone, and the flavors were spot-on. The steak burger was juicy, perfectly cooked, and came with thoughtful accompaniments that elevated the classic. The salmon was beautifully grilled, flaky and flavorful, with sides that complemented it perfectly. Service was warm and attentive as always, and the ambiance strikes that great balance between upscale and comfortable. We're already looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a reliably excellent meal in Harrisonburg.

Lots of prom kids and college students filled the place. We were quickly seated in a nice booth and Nate our server helped us with some stout beers. We had a milk stout and a caramel macchiato stout the latter of which was the best. Looking at the menu I have to say it was not your standard ale house fair. It was definitely "elevated" in this regard. We asked to split a 2 soft shell entree with broccolini & seasoned mash, a bowl of crab bisque and a pierogi sampler. We also asked for an extra plate, to which Nate said he would take care of it. When the food arrived it was divided perfectly. Nate had split the bowl of soup into 2 small bowls and he divided the entree and sides onto 2 plates. The soft shell crabs were HUGE, the largest I had ever seen, and crisply fried to perfection. The sides were equally exquisite in their flavor and preparation. The crab bisque was loaded with fresh lump crabmeat and perfectly seasoned. The pirogies were also excellent in flavor and presentation. It was the most satisfying meal I'd had in a while (could be because I was craving soft shells) Needless to say we were very happy with the food in every way and were stuffed as we asked for the check. Nate/Nathaniel really made the experience as he was highly attentive, though caring for many tables, and was quick to take care of our every need. The place was really rocking with customers and everyone there was having a great time. We'll definitely be back and let everyone we know what a top notch establishment Capital Ale House in Harrisonburg is.

The rooftop seating is super cute, would definitely recommend sitting up there if weather permits. We started with chips n guac. I strongly believe the guacamole is store bought. Compared to Chipotle, it just lacked flavor. The rooftop experience was very nice, but not nearly worth the lower quality food, higher prices, and longer wait.
