I love the Clarkston location of Sagano, but was out in Fenton with friends and decided to try this location. I was honestly disappointed in the quality of our service and the cleanliness of the restaurant. When we first arrived, we were the only people at the table and a couple of our friends went to the bathroom. Our server came and asked my other friend and I if our friends in the bathroom were okay, which came off strange to me. Then she politely told us she needed to put the order in now, and asked us to text our friends and see what they wanted. I get having to put the food in under a certain amount of time, but then they sat 6 more people at our table. I found this confusing and rude because our friends had not even looked at the menu and the people who had just arrived still had to look at the menu too, so I didn't understand why we were being rushed. Our chef was about to start cooking and dropped the spatula on the ground. He picked it up and instead of sanitizing it, wiped it with a rag and began to cook. The food was great, I ordered the steak and shrimp lunch. One of my friends finished her coke and asked for a new one. She had put a piece of lettuce that fell onto the table into the cup because it was empty, assuming she'd get be getting a new cup. Instead, the server brought her back the same cup with the lettuce piece floating on top. I thought it was unsanitary to not fill up a fresh cup. At the end of our dining experience, one of my friends had left the table and our server walked up and looked at her receipt and out loud in front of my other friend and I insulted her tip. She had tipped 15% and I felt it was unnecessary to say this out loud in front of the customer. I don't think I would come back to this location. read more

The food is fantastic, the chefs are funny, but don't expect any other service while you're having dinner The chef gave me somebody else's shrimp when I didnt order shrimp and am allergic. Our sauces were never refilled, had to ask before the chef tried to run out with his cart. Waitress never came back until the end of dinner. No refills on water When we were seated, the waitress asked if there were any birthdays, there was one birthday, and we said yes, and smiled. They brought out plantains at the end of dinner and on our bill was a $7.95 charge called "the birthday special" lol. I told her we never ordered this, she said well it says on the menu that when you tell the waitress it's somebody's birthday you get the birthday special and walked away snippy Regardless, she paid for it in her tip! Never had my water refilled. Didn't get asked if I wanted another drink. We waited so long to be seated and I understand the number of people in our party changed but that shouldn't have made that big of an impact. Then we were with someone in an electric wheel chair and the hosted seated us without space to actual be able to get to our table. Ableism in today's society is not ok. We've eaten at the hibachi tables here a few times, and generally been pleased with the food, service, and atmosphere. As is typical in a hibachi restaurant, the hibachi chef never fails to entertain, performing tricks with his spatula, often spinning egg on edge of spatula, igniting big flame on the cooking surface, constant banter while cooking the food in front of you, building a little volcano with the onion rings, etc. It's kind of like meal and entertainment all rolled up into a single package. I enjoy it when I go, but I don't go all that often. I suspect if you went often, the table show would get old. The hibachi meal comes with noodles, your choice of meat, salad with a tasty dressing, a delicious clear soup that includes some unusual-looking noodles or dumplings that almost resemble egg-drop soup, and rice. I recommend paying the extra $2 for the fried rice. To me, it's worth it for the extra entertainment, watching him prepare it, not to mention having the egg and chicken included with it. The chef gives everybody a little bowl of "yum yum sauce", which is pretty tasty, good to dip your meat in. He also offers a ginger sauce, which I also found quite tasty. They give you so much food, you may well want to take some of it home in a to-go container. They'll even give you little containers to bring the sauces home in as well. Our most recent visit was marred by a few mistakes, including being informed towards the very end of our meal that the sushi chef has already left, before preparing the sushi that several at our table had ordered. It was awkward because the rest of us had had generous sized portions in our hibachi meals, and finished eating, and then discovered some in our group effectively didn't get any food at all. They tried to make it up to us by striking the sushi off the bill (of course) and giving a little extra discount on top of that, but still left us with a bit of a bad impression. read more

This is close to the perfect meal, in my opinion. The dressing on the salad is my favorite salad dressing ever. It's light but a little sweet and the flavor tastes like peanuts to me. The clear soup is so simple but it's the best. The hibachi chef did a great job and everything came out perfect. I mix my vegetables and rice with yum yum sauce and it's the best! Trust me. So we stood outside awaiting their opening time of 3pm on a Sunday. We could see people being seated inside. The door was still locked. Not being from the area, I did not know there was a rear door. After about 15 minutes and seeing customers being seated, we made the trek around back. Walking in, we saw the sign to go to the hostess station by the front entrance. The hosted was a little embarrassed that they forgot to unlock the door. We were seated immediately and waited on. We did not sit on the hibachi side. The waitress was great. The kitchen does need to work on delivery of the order of the meal to get better grouping. I ordered an appetizer and an entree. My wife ordered an entree and a sushi roll. I watched her eat her sushi roll while awaiting my appetizer. Mine finally came. Then my entree arrived and she watched me eat. Hers arrived as I was finishing. Overall, food was good. The lettuce in the salad was so wilted & soggy. I will say the sushi was decent. The menu doesn't have the same choices the other restaurant had & the menu itself is super small & hard to read. Our waitress never said her name, looked like she hated her job, barely came back to the table to check on things & wasn't in a good mood at all. We watched the chef clean the grill after cooking & it was still disgustingly dirty. It was not cleaned very well at all. The other tables were also very dirty. So... it was Fenton Mi. site that we have gone to a few times. Small cant accomodate many folks at once. That said we always try to go at a time where the flow of folks is less busy. That said it was my Birthday this recently passed New Years eve. My gal wanted to do something special for me and called the day before to inquire about resevations and was informed that they do not take them. She then specifically inquired as to what time they opened. She was told 5pm. All that said we fiqured wed get there early enough to be in line when they opened. Guess what? We got there at 4;30 and they were already open!. They opened at noon on that day. Needless to say the wait was an hour and a half. Oh well birthday and plans for New Years were blown and we had to go somewhere else. Question I have is why would anyone at this place answer the phone and give wrong info. This place and our experience was HORRIBLE!! Not only was their food bad, but the staff was so rude and did not care what so ever about how we felt. Every appetizer we ordered was gross and had either poor flavor or not much flavor at all. It felt like they unwrapped it from a frozen bag and heated it up.. The service was fine up until when we finally said something about the food. We got through 3 appetizers, all of which we did not enjoy and left a lot of. We were looking forward to the sushi and then when it finally came out it looked like a pile of vomit. Not only was the appearance bad but the flavor was horrible too! We decided to address this with our server because at this point we had eaten 5 items that we did not enjoy but this sushi roll was the worst of them all. When we politely addressed our concern with her, her response was short and unaccommodating and she walked away leaving us with our unpaid bill on the table. She spent the next 15 minutes walking by our table and avoiding us since we had not put our cards down yet to pay instead of asking us what was wrong. We finally had to get up and ask for a manger just to pay our bill. BUT WAIT, it gets better. Once the manager came over we explained to him our issue with the sushi roll and how we had not seen our server since we voiced our concern. His response "This is how it comes. This is what it's supposed to look like and this is how we serve it." And walked away!! In all of my years of dining I have NEVER had a manager speak to me so rudely and I have NEVER seen this before. If someone hates your food and chooses not to eat it because it's so bad, you do not make them pay for that. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I am usually not one to complain but after 5 terrible dishes, something had to be said about this pile of slop we were served. My empathy goes out to the server a bit. Though she handled it extremely poorly, her manager was so rude that he definitely contributed to her lack of tip. Pro tip of advice from a former server: your customer is ALWAYS right! Even if your manager is an asshole. And you can't be afraid to address their concerns, sending your coworker to collect their bill is NOT how you end up without the blame in this scenario. We felt bad for you because he was such an asshole until YOU chose to avoid us and avoid the situation. That is what cost you compensation for this meal. All in al, I have never felt so invalidated during a dining experience and I don't think the way any of this was handled is worth ever setting foot in this restaurant again. read more

We chose the hibachi side and as a result had to wait about 10 minutes for enough people to show up to fill a table as there were only two in our party. No big deal. We were seated and our waitstaff got our drink order almost immediately. After some time, orders were taken. Good news is, you can still order sushi (what I wanted) while seated in the hibachi area. After a little more time, soups came out. More waiting, salads. More waiting, and finally our hibachi chef shows up. We were close enough to other tables to feel the heat from the initial blaze to draw the "ooohs and ahhhs" and saw some really fun tricks. Unfortunately, our chef seemed to be having a bad night. A few tricks, tossing small pieces of chicken into peoples mouths, and then on to cooking. I've never been to a hibachi grill, but I gather the idea is to be wowed by the chefs and not really notice they're just cooking your food right in front of you. I might as well have been watching my dad on the grill. That fine and all, but I was happy my sushi came out early. The food itself was very good, hence the four stars. I had an Alaskan and Rainbow roll and both were excellent. My wife has steak hibachi and it was great too. Despite the good food, I'm not sure the whole hibachi thing is for me. Sagano does a nice job with it for the most part. Prices were decent for sushi, and while the portions were generous for the hibachi, it wasn't really any different than going to your local Chinese restaurant, other than it costing 20-30% more. The food is great and the prices are worth the amount of food you'll get. I have had good experiences with the service and the show is fun to watch. If you're not into the crowds, going at opening for lunch or takeout are great options. You're wait depends on how fast your table fills up. You'll wait longer at lunch rather than dinner, though I haven't had to wait longer than 15-20 doing lunch. The servers are very attentive and always seem friendly, so that's a plus. Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and it was fairly full with people waiting for hibachi tables. We sat right down at the sushi bar and ordered hot tea, miso soup, and three rolls (AAC, Black Dragon, and one with plum and cucumber). All delicious and served up quickly! Our waitress was also very attentive and polite. Lastly, they give you a free little "dessert" of a cut up orange! So simple but it's chilled and so refreshing! This place was my first qnd my last ti.e going there. It was horrible! Tables are only for sushi orders and hibachi tables are only for hibachi.... my children and i only sat at the sushi table. They give you a sheet of paper and you take your orders on the sheet of paper... with another menu where you order with the waitress... doesnt make any sense. This place have such POOR service also! Took the waitress forever to come by to check on us. When i got my Food, it did not wven taste like sushi. I LOVE SUSHI. i know sushi. The TNT was not spicy and at! There were bugs flyi g every where and even got on my food! Totally lost my appetite. Told the waitress and she said she will tell the manager and the MANAGER DID NOTHING ABOUT IT!!! didnt even come talk to me, didnt even apologize! And i have to pay full price for the meal! Through a series of visits here, there have been good visits and there have been great visits. Tonight's was an example of a great visit. Rolls can be inconsistent but we've found that the simpler rolls are executed well. We've tried the tuna roll, rainbow roll, dragon roll, and the tuna roll and rainbow roll are very good. Nice cool temperature in the fish without being too warm or cold and you can taste the flavor of the fish. That is always a plus in my book. The rolls are also tight, thus not falling apart when you pick them up. Tempura udon is better than nabeyaki udon, and at $8.95, it's a great affordable option that will fill your stomach. I only wished they would offer more garnishes like onions, chopped scallions, and other vegetable tempura to fill out the bowl. It's nice that they offer the two shrimp tempura though. They are breaded and fried nicely, and a great size too. Tonkatsu was delicious and at $12.95 a good value. Two 8oz. pieces of pork cutlet were plenty for both Husband and me. It was pounded thin and breaded and fried well. The meat had great flavor and it wasn't rubbery. Our waitress was nice enough to split two bowls of rice, and the small side garnishes of sliced cucumber, red cabbage and tomato was a nice finish to the meal. We've had a mixture of wait staff and I would have to say they have all been good. The flow of the restaurant is a bit awkward, but with the hibachi being their main feature, it's understandable. They have a back door that you can enter, but it's a little cumbersome to have to walk all the way up front to just come back to be seated. I would suggest that they have some signage near the sushi bar that could indicate seating at the bar or table. Overall, I would come back and get the tonkatsu and udon. If you're feeling adventurous, grab a seat at the bar and let the sushi chefs craft you a personal menu. read more
