I get almond chicken at a lot of different places from Flint to Ann Arbor and prefer the brown gravy that comes with it over the red that is sometimes served. This place you needed to add a little salt (I know crazy!) on the rice. Otherwise it was a little flat but once it was nice and warmed up it had good flavor the chicken was really crispy and the batter wasn't too thick. The Rangoon could have used a little more crab but the wrapper was nice and thin and crispy. It'll definitely be a regular for me.

I am aware I need to adjust expectations, and I am. Cantonese Gourmet East touts itself as a takeout restaurant, but it does have the ability to dine in. There were quite a few people parked in random areas out front, so I chose to park next door at a business that was closed. It was a very short walk to the restaurant. Upon arriving it smelled overwhelming of lemon cleaning product. It was extremely clean in the dining area, so I chose to eat there. The lacquered tables were really cute and depicted different flowers and animals appropriate to the setting. I approached the ordering window. It was a very simple hole in the wall that could slide shut behind plastic. I asked if there was tofu. No tofu, so I ordered the curry shrimp, which came with white rice and I ordered wonton soup. I returned to my padded diner chair. I was not offered a drink and I completely forgot to order one. I saw there was a soda machine in the dining area, but I didn't take advantage of that. I tipped up front when I paid and said I would be eating inside. After about a 10 minute wait, I heard someone yell to me from the window "Come get your order." I was given a paper plate, plastic fork and spoon, 2 napkins, a fortune cookie, a paper bag, a plastic container of shrimp curry wrapped in plastic wrap, a baggie of fried wontons, a plastic container of wonton soup wrapped in plastic wrap, 4 soy sauce packets, and a paper container of white rice. I unwrapped my meal at the table. I don't use soy sauce. It changes the flavor for me. I will use it while I'm cooking beef, but other than that I don't use it. Why is this significant? The food was bland. It was good. It just desperately needed seasoning. I sat and read Yelp reviews while I ate. I read that they don't use MSG in their food. That's super nice for people with allergies. They still needed a little bit of something to bring out the natural flavors. Salt would have worked great. Maybe that's not a thing? It definitely needed something though. I liked the wonton soup better than the curry shrimp. I asked for chopsticks and proceeded to pull all of the green peppers out of my container of curry shrimp. It filled my plate and took my huge curry portion down to something I could easily eat. I could have told them no peppers, but I love the essence they impart. I just don't enjoy eating them directly. I finished my onions and shrimp in a very dark yet mild curry. It was good. I wouldn't order it again. It came out extremely hot and my shrimp continued to cook in the sauce. I saw them get smaller and smaller in real time. The wonton soup was minimal carrots, some pea pods, onion, bok choy, and mostly wontons. I dumped in my baggie of fried wontons. This was good. I feel like it gave the soup more flavor. I normally will drink the broth. It didn't have a lot of flavor, so I just focused on the solid offerings. It was good. Would I get it again? I think so. It just didn't have the vibrant broccoli I'm used to. That's ok. I'm adjusting expectations and I'm clear on the fact that I'm spoiled. I finished and packed everything back into my paper bag. I asked the lady at the window if she wanted me to use the small trash can in the dining area. She told me to give my bag of trash to her. I had a couple bites of rice, but that's not really what I was interested in. She asked me if I wanted to take it home. I passed. Would I come back? Not for dine in. That was not a great experience. The orange chicken was good but I've definitely had better orange chicken from other competitors. I can't place my finger on it but this orange chicken sauce was a little more tangy and sweet than what I'm normally used too--was still good though. Obviously, I've been missing out on some of the best Chinese food in the area until a few months ago and I have no idea why. Seriously, I've driven past this location a hundred times before and never once noticed what is arguably the best Chinese restaurant in town until recently. Boy, was I missing out! It is located in a relatively nondescript-looking strip mall, which I guess is why I simply never noticed it before. Stupid me for not knowing about this place before now. The egg drop soup was outstanding, possibly the best of its type that I've had anywhere. The texture, flavor and seasoning were all perfect, the way everything should be. Service was fantastic. The girl that waited on us was also the seating hostess. She seemed to know the menu backward and forward, much like the back of her hand. She knew what she was talking about, including potential accommodations to specific dishes, how everything was cooked, etc. She was a real help navigating the menu for both my husband and myself. On the menu, I noticed that they had more than a few vegetarian options from which to choose, so I was pleased. I ordered the stir fried assorted vegetables. It was delicious, well-seasoned with fresh veggies and some of the best rice I've ever had in a Chinese restaurant. My dish was not too salty, nor under seasoned and the rice wasn't super greasy and my vegetables were sauteed perfectly, not swathed in oil or bland. I appreciated the variety of vegetables in my dish, the seasoning and the texture of the rice. They don't serve spring rolls here (bummer), the vegetarian alternative to egg rolls, which contain shrimp, so our waitress charged only for the luncheon size, even though it was well past lunch (it was after 6 p.m.) and the order was the same size as the dinner portion, just sans the egg roll. I appreciated that. It was super cheap, too, but then again, both the lunch and dinner menu options are both really affordable here. I wish they served spring rolls, but that isn't a deal breaker or anything like that. My husband loved his dish. He ordered the Orange Chicken. He kept raving about great the rice and chicken were, how fresh it was and how the seasoning was "on the money." He especially loved the wonton soup. He said it was the best he's had in ages, too. Both of us enjoyed the hot tea as well (so good). The portions of both dishes were healthy-sized and affordably priced, not to mention were the best tasting Chinese food we've had in awhile.
